Index Bookmarks
When I generate an index and include the bookmark feature in the PDF, the bookmark link in the PDF always goes to the last page of the page range rather than the first page of the range. How can I get it to go to the first page in the range?
I am using CS4
You could try manually making/editing the bookmark rather than using the one automatically created.

Index bookmarks not appearing in correct place in PDF
This has happened to me on Frame 6, Frame 7, Frame 8, and Frame 9. It's happened with Acrobat 7, 9, and 10.
Occasionally, when I print a book in FrameMaker, the Index bookmarks are out of sequence in the generated PDF. They appear as subheadings in the file BEFORE the index, and the Index bookmark itself has no subheadings.
For example, the bookmarks look like this:
Title
Table of Contents
1 Introduction
2 Basics
(other chapters)
Symbols
Numerics
A
B
Z
Index
In this book, the bookmarks from "Symbols" through "Z" are in the Index file. But, they don't appear in the correct sequence in the PDF.
Note: To create PDFs, I use the Acrobat PDF printer driver, distilling the book to a ps file, then running Distiller to create the PDF. When this problem arises, I move the bookmarks to where they should go
This is a great puzzlement. Can anyone tell me why this happens?Hi mcloudy,
Make sure the Mac Mini has all available software updates as suggested here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1333 . Just click the Apple in the top left corner of the screen> Software Update, and install all available software updates.
Also, make sure the iPhone is updated to iPhone software 2.2 http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

PDFMaker 9 adding bookmarks to Word index markers
Hi folks,
I recently updated to Acrobat 9.5.1 and am seeing an odd, annoying problem. I use Microsoft Word 2007 to create a document with a non-standard heading style called "Message Bar." When I make my PDF, I ask PDFMaker to create a Level 3 bookmark for this style. This has worked well, without a hitch for several years.
In recent document updates, however, PDFMaker appears to be picking up the index marker that sits next to the Message Bar heading and creating a separate bookmark. Curiously enough, it also adds consecutive numbering at the front of the bookmark, so that the first "index bookmark" is 1b<Message>, the second is 2b<DifferentMessage> and so on, through the document (and there are close to 1000 of these messages). After doing that, the normal bookmarks for this style are also listed. Both bookmarks point to the same (correct) location in the PDF doc.
In the PDF preferences, the only headings/styles checked for bookmarks are Heading 1, Heading 2 and Message Bar.
As a quick workaround, I deleted all the "index bookmarks" in Acrobat Pro and moved the standard bookmarks (with no extraneous numbering) into the proper place. As we update the doc and PDF every couple of months, I hope I won't have to do this forever. Nor am I keen to move my index markers to another line (or style).
Is this a bug? Has anyone else seen something like this? Google didn't turn anything up. Appreciate any advice. Thanks Bill, yes I've created an index in Word but the links don't convert as they do for a table of contents.
In PDFmaker, enabling Create Bookmarks, Add Links, Convert cross-references, Convert footnotes, Enable advanced tagging, and all options on the Bookmarks tab doesn't have any effect.
Word doesn't build an index in quite the same way as a ToC (in Word itself the index entries aren't bookmarked) so I'm a bit pessimistic about this feature being in PDFMaker but it'd be nice if someone could confirm this. I've only tested in Word 2003 but I doubt 2007 works differently. -
Adding a note to object (rectangle) in JS
Is it possible to add a note (part of the attributes) to a currently selected object from a JS script?
I need to "tag" a rectangle.
Thanks franKFull help is available from within the ESTK Editor, under the Help Menu.
To me, it's quite cumbersome to find what you need, so I first re-made it into a HTML version, and from that a compiled Windows Help file. If you're on Windows, you can read (search, index, bookmark et caetera) it right away; on Mac OS X you'll need a Windows Help compatible viewer (and Jongware's personal recommendation is Robin Lu's excellent feature packed iCHM viewer -- a link is in the first "Questions, anyone" remark on the page I'm about to announce).
You can download the Illustrator CS4 and CS5 Help files from my site: http://www.jongware.com/idjshelp.html. You also might want to download the Javascript Core Classes (File, Folder, Math, Date, and more) and ScriptUI Classes (windows, panels, dialogs, dropdowns, textedits, and more) for easy reference. (One of these days I'll integrate these into the Illy CS Help file ...)
Ah -- the "note" property. Well, that's a property of PageItem (and, aside, of TextPath as well) and a PageItem is a superclass of (breaths in) CompoundPathItem, GraphItem, GroupItem, LegacyTextItem, MeshItem, NonNativeItem, PathItem, PlacedItem, PluginItem, RasterItem, SymbolItem, and TextFrameItem (breaths out). So that covers just about all, I guess. Except for TextPath -- I wonder why. -
How can I avoid having "XE index" entries in the pdf bookmarks frame?
Hi,
I try to use RH9 to create a pdf file, but the contents (= bookmarks) frame looks like this:
1 Heading 1
2 XE "Index word 1" /* MERGEFORMAT Heading 2
3 XE "Index word 2" /* MERGEFORMAT XE "Index word 3" /* MERGEFORMAT XE "Index word 4" /* MERGEFORMAT Heading 3
4 XE "Index word 5" /* MERGEFORMAT Heading 5
Apart from the apalling look, these bookmarks jump somewhere, but not to the given topic.
I know I could create a Word document instead and fix the headings there, but I am trying to delete this step from my workflow, because it is to time-consuming.
Thank you for any suggestions!
IrinaOn second look, no: The same .dot - now hiding all formatting and special characters - results in a pdf-bookmarks (=TOC) frame
a) without index entries, if the ssl hasn't checked the option "Keep HTML Heading levels" and
b) with index entries, if the ssl has checked the option "Keep HTML Heading levels"
a) b)
1) Any ideas, why setting this option results in a frame showing things which are hidden in the .dot file?
2) Would an update to RH9 help? (I am very much hesitating this step since I've tried RH9 and found it corrupts all my conditional tags.)
Thanx in advance,

Bookmark File external to pdf but indexing into it?
We have a large book on pdf (an industry reference book), 906 pages. It is in a shared folder and marked Read-only at the OS level. Because of this, adding bookmarks is disabled.
Here is my question:
Is there any way to have a separate bookmark file (read/write) that indexes into a read-only pdf file? If this is possible, I can have my own bookmarks and not have to make the content file (the pdf file) read/write. Also, I can have my preferred bookmarks and my coworker can have her own, slightly different bookmarks.
TIA.

P.S. After two days and about 35 views, I see there are no responses. I take this silence to mean, "Adobe does not have this capability," which is fine. Now I know.

Bookmarks and Search Engine Indexing
How do you allow a user to bookmark a page or a search engine to index a page?
I am new to JSF and I am trying to decide whether to go forward with it. The company I am doing work for is requiring that their site can be bookmarked and search engines can index it. I think that most every site would want this. I understand that there are certain pages you do not want bookmarked, like a shopping cart or a muti page form, but item pages, article pages and so on should be allowed to be bookmarked. I think I understand how JSF handles URLs and understand how the first request of a page is handled. With this, I do not see anyway a particular page can be bookmarked or indexed.
For instance, this page in JSF would not be able to be bookmarked or indexed. I have seen many other posts regarding this, but I have not seen any solutions.
I did see an idea about placing query strings in a URL:
 /article.jsp?article=383276
would be something like
 /article-383276/article.jsf
but there looks like there would be issues creating an ArticleBean on the first request and then accessing it.
I am also not sure how you would map /article-383276/article.jsf to /article.jsp, being that you would have many different URLs and then getting the URL in the address bar to reflect which article you were at.
/article-383276/article.jsf
/article-245621/article.jsf
/article-145845/article.jsf
and so on
I have also seen there are issues regarding the use of redirect.
I would sure like to use JSF on this project, but this limitation may make it impossible.
Thanks,

The Index page will not show the title with Bookmarking and the Facebook "like" or "share"
When you utilize the Facebook Like button on your Muse created web pages, it carries the title over (from the Page Properties) and works fine, except for the Index. This also applies to bookmarking pages. When the Facebook like is used (and the sub window for Facebook opens) it is titled “Home” that’s it. When the index page is bookmarked it also says “Home”. Why won’t the whole title be used? Is there any way to correct this?
Hi,
Could you please provide the url of the site and let me take a look to your current settings, -
I'm trying to link an index entry to a bookmark which I have
placed in the middle of a topic. When a user clicks the index
entry, I would like the text that starts at the bookmark to display
at the top of the page or at least be highlighted. I don't seem to
be able to do this.Welcome to our community, ndldn
It won't be possible to highlight. But to coax it to the top
of the page, you need to place the cursor at the bottom of the page
(Ctrl+End does this nicely) and press Enter lots of times to add
"White Space" at the bottom of the topic.
Note that if your user decides to print said topic, the
additional white space will likely cause an extra sheet or maybe
two of paper to be "printed". Not really much of an easy way around
that. It will also possibly cause an unwanted gap if you create
printed docs. But for those, you might apply a conditional build
tag to the white space so that it's removed when you generate
printed docs.

ICloud Bookmark Sync breaks Windows Indexing for Bookmarks
When iCloud syncs Bookmarks to my PC (Windows 7 64-bit), it clears the "Allow this file to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" attribute on the files. This breaks Windows Indexing, preventing things like Windows Search and web browser auto-completion from finding the bookmarks to use for navigation suggestions.

Once I've moved a bookmark in the sidebar, the entire list will freeze up for sometimes a minute before anything works again.
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Firefox 29 is no longer automatically creating bookmarks backups.
I hate to be posting another question having finally (I believe) finding a work around for the "Firefox 29 fails to exit properly and remains running in task manager" problem.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997670
However, in Firefox 28 FF would automatically create a new bookmarks backup upon first opening of each day and the number of bookmark backups could be set in about:config setting:
browser.bookmarks.max_backups
Since installing Firefox 29 this functionality does not appear to be working. Is this by design or another "issue"? Has anyone else noticed this issue?
Please don't ask me to "reset to default state", "run in safe mode", etc. I just went through all that with the above "Failing to exit properly" thread. I know I can manually backup bookmarks. I would like to know whether this is by design, if other people have noticed this, or I am the only one experiencing this.

Kind Regards,
AxisThis is a bit of a "bump" with some new things I have tried. I have run the Places Maintenance add-on (again) and places.sqlite integrity seems absolutely fine.
Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
I have re-installed FF 29.
I am able to create manually, and restore, bookmark backups without a hitch.
I did delete places.sqlite and restarted FF 29. The only thing I lost was all my bookmark Icons. So I re-added the former places.sqlite. Of course, I would have to wait until tomorrow morning to know for sure, but since the Places Maintenance add-on indicated no problems, and since I can manually create them, I am quite sure it is not a corrupted places.sqlite file.
I tried what may be a dubious add-on, BackupFox, and it failed to create a new backup but left a temp file in the main profile folder.
Logic tells me that if I can manually create and restore bookmark backups, then something in the engine(?) may be responsible but I do not know enough to go further with that. Permissions must be O.K. or I wouldn't be able to make (manually) a backup.
I did not have this problem at all with FF 28. Rather, I was asking cor-el how to limit the number of backups, which he showed me. What makes this difficult to test is that I would have to wait until the first opening of FF each day to tell.
I can't tell if this problem is "only me" or affecting others, however, (no insult intended) I can paste into the support.mozilla.org page search box the exact title of this thread and not find it. I shows up number 1 on Google doing similar search. People who aren't checking their profile folder each day might not even be noticing this.
cor-el, or anybody, have you found auto backups have stopped in FF 29 for you? Anyone who reads this please let me know if your bookmark auto-backup is working. Just peak in your profile and see if you have a new one each day.
Does anyone know just what .dll or .exe or what actually is triggered how that causes the auto-backup to occur? Is it the maintenance service?
What I have not tried is creating another profile because this one seems just fine and I has always worked before 29, and still does work, as far as profiles go. I need to know what "triggers" auto bookmark backup and I doubt it is my profile.
Regards again,

Context sensitive help not opening to bookmark (tough one)
I have a Robohelp 9 HTML project with multiple topics. Each topic has multiple bookmarks. I have created a map file with mappings from a map id to a bookmark within a topic.
An example of a map id is Change_SSN, the map # is 70, and this is mapped to a book mark.
The .ali entry is <alias name="Change_SSN" link="Change_SSN\TCRS_Concord_Project_-_Change_SSN_User_Guide-FINAL.htm#3_Change_SSN">,
BCCSDefault.h has this entry: #define Change_SSN 70
whcsddata has this entry: SetCsh(15,"Change_SSN",70,"Change_SSN/TCRS_Concord_Project_-_Change_SSN_User_Guide-FINAL. htm#3_Change_SSN");
I am using the standard RoboHelp_CSH.js file in my web application. Within that web application I call to RH_ShowHelp(0, <path to the index.htm file>,HH_HELP_CONTEXT,70). The help file will be displayed but it does not go directly to the book mark within the topic, instead the default topic is displayed. I have multiple topics and when the help file is displayed all topics are displayed in the TOC, the correct topic is not even opened let alone the bookmark within the appropriate topic.
If I just open my browser and enter path/index.html#<id=70 again the help file is displayed but to the default topic. This leads me to believe there is not an issue with the coding of my web application but something odd with the help file.
I have tried everything and I can not figure out why this is not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Hi,
Is your help always opening the default topic regardless of whether you call a link to a bookmark or does it go to the default topic for every CSH call?
Are you using local help or is it placed on a server?
What browsers have you tried?
If you enter the entire path with two pound signs in the address bar, do you then see the correct topic/bookmark location? (example: http://example.com/index.htm#Change_SSN/TCRS_Concord_Project_-_Change_S SN_User_Guide-FINAL.htm#3_Change_SSN)
My first guess would be that you have to enable all map files for your output. But you seem to have done that as whcshdata contains information. *For anyone reading this thread: To enable CSH in WebHelp: Open your SSL, expand Content Categories, select the category and check the map files you want to use under Map files.
Please answer the questions and we’ll dive some deeper.

Willam
