Index in .chm file is incorrect

Hi,
I'm using RoboHelp X5 with Windows XP SP3. I have an index that is correct in RoboHelp but not in the .chm file. In RoboHelp, I have General Ledger as a keyword and several sub-keywords. However, in the .chm file, the sub-keywords show up under General Ledger Journal instead of General Ledger. I've attached screen shots of both at the bottom of this post, and I've pasted the applicable section of the project's .hhk file. (The .hhk file is really long, so I didn't want to insert the whole thing.)
While troubleshooting this issue, my coworker changed the keyword from General Ledger to General edger, and that fixed the problem, but obviously we can't keep it that way.
I tried the following:
Compared that section of the HHK file to others. I may have missed something, but it looked OK to me.
Started the project, deleted the HHK file, and then saved a change to the index so RH regenerated the HHK file.
Deleted the .cpd file.
Deleted and reentered all of the keywords.
When the issue first started, the General Ledger subkeywords appeared under Future Periods instead of General Ledger Journal - I'm not sure what I did to change that, but I think it was when I deleted and then reentered the Future Periods keyword.
Unfortunately, none of these worked.I saw another thread with a similar issue where the solution was to create a second index and copy the keywords to it, but I don't think X5 allows a second index.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
Are you using any Build Tags along with a Build Expression to control the output?
I ask because the screen capture of the CHM seems to intimate that General Ledger is absent from the list. If it was linked to a topic and the topic was removed from the build, it would seem to make sense.
Cheers... Rick

  • No Index in the Chm file

    Hi All:
I'm working with RH8 to make a chm file.
After i generate the chm file, there is no "Index" showing in the book, although i check the tab already in the "Window Properties"  -> Tri-pane Tabs and Windows - > "TOC & Index". And I have index file in the project. Is this the right place to check this item?
         Thanks a lot for help.

Hi, thank you for your help.
But there are quite a  lot of index keywords in the Index file. Each topic has several  keywords. More information about this project:
    1. This is a merged help. I checked in the "Project Settings" -> Index, i chose "Add New Keywords to Index File (HHK)".
    2.  I set "Microsoft HTML Help" as Primary Layout, in the "Properties"  window, i select all TOC, Index as default ones. In "Additional  Options", i select "Apply to all Topics -> CSS (catalog.css)".  Weirdly, the"Next" button on this window is not highlighted, thus i  cannot go to the next page.
    3. I check the first keyword in the  index, and it belongs to this topic which is shown in the TOC. So the  topic containing the first index keyword is not missing.
    4. The project was a X5 project, since i took over, i've been using RH8. The index now in the project is different from the original generated  chm's index. Some of the keywords are missing in the current project. I see some people in the forum having problems with the Index by updating the project to RH8.
    Wow, amazing find out!
I create this new index named  "New", "drag and drop" some of the keywords from the original index to  this "new" index, just three of them. Because i only want to check if  the new index will show in the generated chm file or not. And also i set  this "New" index as default.
It turned out that not only the index shows up in the  chm file, but also shows all the keywords in the old project. i mean the  same as the old generated chm file. Weird no? I thought by using the  "New" index, only those three keywords would show up. But everything  shows up, even more than the ones in the project.
Although it gives exact the index i want, i still want the explanations to these. In which way does this "New" index help?
    Thanks for all your help.

  • How can I create a link from a CHM file to a webhelp file?

How can I create a link from a CHM file to a webhelp file?
The CHM output (accreditation.chm) is stored in a parent directory, and the webhelp output (index.htm) is stored in a child directory.

Open the usual Link dialog and enter the relative path from where the CHM will be installed to where the webhelp will be installed.

  • RoboHelp HTML 9 - CHM file Different color shown for text of dropdown hotspot.

    Dear all,
In Design view of Robohelp, I see all dropdown hotspot text are green.  But when I preview or genereate the topic to CHM file, all dropdown hotspot text are blue like color of hyperlinks.
I don't understand why it behaves like that. Please tell me.

I recreated your index keywords and have identified what is going on.
When you click on CTV, Accept it opens the correct topic.
Now notice what happens when you start typing app after CTV. The highlighting goes to Enable so when you press Enter, Rh opens the highlighted topic. The highlighting will go to the last sub keyword. Try adding Zulu.
I will see if I can create something similar tomorrow using another authoring tool.

  • I cannot get firefox to read a .chm file. Old Netscape does, explorer does, chrome does. How can I get Firefox to read a .chm file?

In Firefox 24.0 -> Tools -> Options -> Applications, I cannot choose a program (hh.exe) to read .chm files. When I choose to open a *.chm file I have only the option of saving it, not to open it. Other browsers like Explorer, chrome, even old netscape 7.2 allow me to open it and the program finds I presume the hh.exe file and away you go. I cannot find a way to get Firefox (my favorite browser) to read chm files.

''As I recall, Netscape 7.2 was a hybrid version made long after AOL shut-down their Mozilla programming operations, and that version incorporated some Trident code used by IE - which might explain the CHM compatibility.''
''Not sure why Chrome handles it, though.''
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Compiled_HTML_Help <br />
Microsoft Compiled HTML Help is a '''Microsoft proprietary''' online help format, consisting of a collection of HTML pages, an index and other navigation tools. The files are compressed and deployed in a binary format with the extension .CHM, for Compiled HTML. The format is often used for software documentation.
    There used to be a CHM Reader Add-on for Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chm-reader/ - but it hasn't been updated since June, 2008 / Firefox 3.6. <br />
Sorry, Mozilla doesn't support "proprietary" formats such as that.

  • "No Topics Found" RoboHelp8 (CHM File)

Using the "Search" feature in my .CHM file has begun to return a "No Topics Found" error.
For a little history, we have been using this same project for several years, long before I took over. Until this latest build, searching worked fine. Beginning last week, searching returns a "No Topics Found" result. I can find and access topics using the index, so I know that they are there but no luck using general search. I've tried manually adding keywords to several topics (under the general tab) with no luck. I've also restored backups of the project (from compressed .RAR files) and generated a .CHM with the same results.
The cause of this seems like it would have to do with some kind of setting that's been changed but I have no idea what. The only changes that I have made have been to the .CSS files we use (font type, size, and color changes), the addition of a few new topics/pages, and the use of J-Query witin those new topics.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I found this thread where Rick Stone has suggested a possible cause.

  • CHM File Compatibility with 64-bit Applications

Does anyone have any experience developing HTML Help (CHM)
for 64-bit applications? Are the 32-bit CHM files created with
RoboHelp compatible on the 64-bit platform? Thanks for your
    help!

    Hi,
I happened to notice this post and thought, "Yikes, we run
our CHM files on 64-bit systems all the time and we've never
    checked whether they're working properly."
So I did a systematic check of the following on a 64-bit
system (Windows 2003 Server). Fortunately, everything worked
exactly as it does on 32-bit versions. Phew!
Context sensitive help works (pressing F1 in the application).
All links worked, including popup links.
All expanding and dropdown hotspots worked.
Both Index and Contents worked fine. Contents updated
automatically when I move between topics (as is specified in our
    project).
Search functionality worked fine. Search options, too.
Favorites worked fine. These reappeared even when I closed the
help and reopened it (as they should).
All of the above also worked when I opened the CHM file from
Windows Explorer (rather than from inside the application).
    Regards,
    Eileen
P.S. I should add that the help was compiled using RH7.

  • Robohelp 7- .chm file

    Hello,
I am currently working on Robo Help 7 to generate a .chm help
file. I am trying to change the image of TOC book and Toc topic, i
have a image of our own and want to replace. i am unable to find an

    Hi Sriharsha.
You can do this with an icon strip. Rick Stone's
    tips
n tricks file describes how to do this. Just look for "Icon
    Strip" in the index.

  • Compiled CHM File Does Not Reflect New Project Name

I have read many of the experts' responses to posts and found them extremely helpful. However, I have not seen one that addresses my issue.
I have RH HTML Version RH8. I renamed a project via 1) File - Rename Project and 2) Single Source Layouts - Primary Layout - Properties - Output Folder and File Name.
Two problems are: 1) The Project Folder name still reflects the old project name and 2) The CHM file still reflects the old project name.
As a result, the output Help that the user sees still has the old project name in the title bar.
All generated files as well as the RoboHelpHTML Project File were changed to the new project name, just as the RENAME PROJECTS Help says it should. However, the CHM file does not reflect the new project name as it says it should.
    1) Can I change the Folder name that was created when I compiled the Help file to the correct name?
    2) Can I change the FILENAME in the SELECT OUTPUT FOLDER AND FILENAME  window?
    3) Can I / should I rename the TOC and Index filenames from the old project name to the new project name? (Help says that changing the project name does not change these file names and it didn't.)
Will any of these actions correct the problem? I appreciate any help you can give.

    Welcome to our community
    Try File > Project Settings.
And if that doesn't get it, try the Project Set-up pod, windows and change the Window Caption.

  • How to add search tab in the .chm file

    Hi All,
All these days, I was using RH -5 to create the .chm file. Today, I moved onto RH -9. The chm file had the Search option enabled automatically in RH-5. But in RH-9, Glossary option alone is available and I am not able to add Search tab adjacent to the Index tab. Please refer to the screenshot for more clarification.
Please help me to solve this as the client would expect Search tab for sure.
    Regards,
    Lata

    Hi Lata
What you are showing in your image is a mismatch. The tab says Glossary but the contents of the tab show Search.
I think in this case I would suggest attempting to define a new window with the attributes you need. Then configure that window as the default for the layout you are using.
    You define the window by:
    1. Ensure Microsoft HTML Help is the default layout.
    2. Click View > Pods > Project Set-up and you should see the windows there.

  • Help: External Links not coming properly in generated chm file

    Hi
I am a new user of RoboHelp for Word/HTML. I am currently
having Robohelp 6. But I have also used evaluation version of
Robohelp 7.0. I am trying to convert .HLP files into .chm files.
I would like to give an example for explaining things:
Say I have two .HLP files say AHelp.hlp and BHelp.hlp. Now
AHelp contains a link to some page (say VA_X.htm) in BHelp. And
this link works correctly. When I generate CHM files from these HLP
files, then though the link is correctly highlighted in AHelp. But
it points to some incorrect page like BHelp.chm::/VA_X..htm.
Whereas in BHelp.chm the name VA_X.htm has changed into say
    BHelp_Voltage_Amplifier_X.htm.
So what can I do to correct this problem so that the links
    are generated correctly?
    Plz help!!
    Thanks
    Regards
    TheIlliterate

Hi. Sorry for the slow response. We "gurus" (ha!) are
employees like you and have to balance responding against our
workload. We do try to answer what we can when we can.
As to your specific problem, the way interhelp file links are
handled between HLP and CHM files is different. I have to admit to
not converting HLP files that had inter-help links so I may be off
the mark here. That said, I suspect your course of action will be
to go into each inter help file link and re-add it. You can do this
by double clicking on the link, clicking on the "Remote Topic"
option and selecting the CHM file to link to. You'll be asked to
copy the CHM into the project directory and then you can select the
    correct topic.
I'm happy for someone else to chip in here if there is an
    easier way.

  • Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a .chm file work intermittently.

    SUMMARY
Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a
.chm file (and the Baggage Files) only work intermittently. The
only solution appears to be deleting the Temporary Internet Files.
    PROBLEM
    1. I place the XLS, DOC, or PDF file in the Windows
sub-directory that corresponds to the RoboHelp project sub-folder
where the topic in which I’ll place the hyperlink exists.
    2. I open the help project in RoboHelp HTML.
    3. I right-click on the project’s Baggage Files
sub-folder that corresponds to the Windows sub-directory in which I
placed the XLS, DOC, or PDF file (in step 1).
    4. I import the XLS, DOC, or PDF file.
    5. I open the topic in which I’m going to place the
    hyperlink in the WYSIWYG editor.
    6. I “drag and drop” the Baggage File into the
topic (in the WYSIWYG editor) to create a link to it.
    7. I save the changes and then generate HTML (.chm) help.
    8. I open the .chm file and click the hyperlink. The XLS,
DOC, or PDF file may or may not open.
    9. When the hyperlink works correctly, for DOC and XLS files,
a “File Download – Security Warning” dialog box
appears asking, “Do you want to open or save this
file?”. The buttons that are available are
    “Open”, “Save”, and “Cancel”.
These buttons work then as one would expect. (When the hyperlink
works correctly for a PDF file, it simply opens the PDF file in a
new window; there’s no prompt to save, open, or cancel.)
    10. When a hyperlink does NOT work, for DOC, XLS, and PDF
files, no dialog box or other visual message is displayed. Instead,
the sound that is associated with the “Exclamation”
program event is played (the “Windows XP
Exclamation.wav” file is the WinXP default).
    Other Notes:
    - The hyperlinks ALWAYS work when I view a topic using the
“View Selected Item” function (Ctrl+W) in the RoboHelp
    HTML project.
    - Once a hyperlink stops working, it will not start working
again until I delete all the Temporary Internet Files.
    - A hyperlink will stop working even if Internet Explorer
(iexplore.exe) is closed the entire time.
    WORKAROUND
Through trial and error, I have discovered that if a
hyperlink stops working, I can get it to work again using the
    following steps:
    1. Leave the .chm file open.
    2. Open Internet Explorer.
    3. Click Tools>Internet Options….
    4. From the “Internet Options” dialog box, select
    the “General” tab.
    5. Under the “Temporary Internet Files” section,
    click the “Delete Files…” button.
    6. From the “Delete Files” dialog box, select
“Delete all offline content” and then click
“OK”. The files are deleted and the “Delete
    Files” dialog box closes.
    7. Click “OK” to close the “Internet
    Options” dialog box.
    8. Without closing Internet Explorer and without re-starting
the .chm file, all the hyperlinks that didn’t work before
    will now work.

hyperlink and then click either “Open” or
“Save” from the “File Download – Security

    - A file will appear here even if I click “Save”

    - When a file does appear in the Temporary Internet Files

    “ms-its:C:\PrimaryProjectFolder\ProjectName.chm::/SubFolderName/FileName.xls”
    “View Objects…”
Here’s a list of all the program files that appear:
    - “Microsoft Office Template and Media Control”
    (Last Accessed 12/13/06) (Version 12,0,6024,0)
    - “Shockwave ActiveX Control” (Last Accessed

    - “Shockwave Flash Object” (Last Accessed
    12/18/06) (Version 9,0,28,0)
    - “Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool”
    (Last Accessed 12/14/06) (Version 1,5,722,0)
    - “WUWebControl Class” (Last Accessed 12/13/06)
    (Version 5,8,0,2469)
Today is 12/18/06 so the only program file that is listed as
having been “Last Accessed” today is the
    “Shockwave Flash Object”.
    REQUEST FOR HELP
I really want to include certain PDF, DOC, and XLS files in
their native format in a .chm file. However, I need a better
solution to my problem than the one I discovered. What I really
want is to avoid the entire problem altogether.
Have anyone seen this before or have any suggestions?

You wont be able to do that. The embedded objects would appear as images only.

This could be a Launch Services issue. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
    4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.
BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.

  • Link to a pdf page on web from a chm file

    Hello,
I'm using RoboHelp 9.0.2.  I'm trying to create a link in a chm file to a specific pdf page using a URL.  The link I am using is http://www.actuarialstandardsboard.org/pdf/exposure/ASOP_No27_second%20exposure_2011.pdf#p age=41
I put the above line in my chm file.  It appears correctly in the URL project list and shows correctly when I choose Show.  It also apeears to be correct in the HTML code of the page.
However when I create the chm clicking on the link just brings me the start of the pdf file.  After clicking on the link in the chm file and explorer opens, the URL in explorer does not show #page=41.  It ends at.pdf.
Am I missing something or does anyone kno whys this is not working?
    Thanks
    John

    Hi there
That link doesn't even work for me when I paste it into the address bar of my Firefox browser. It does work in IE, but not in Firefox. In Firefox it opens the PDF generically.
I tested in a CHM and it did try and link, but it presents a black page. Looks like the correct page, but it's blacked out.
CHM files rely upon elements of Internet Explorer to display their content. So perhaps it's something specific to a certain version of Internet Explorer as well as a certain version of the Acrobat Reader.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How can I remove the Location column from the search results in a .chm file?

How can I remove the Location column from the search results in a .chm file?
I generated the file in Robohelp HTML 9.
As far as I know it's used when you've combined more than one source into the final help file. It is possible (though I don't remember doing it) that I did that once a couple of years ago but now I'm only using one source - the project that's generating the .chm.
Can anyone tell me how I can remove it?
    Thanks
    Tom

In Project Setup look at the Window properties. I think you will find Advanced Search is ticked.
