Index issue - dont understand the cost

Hello
I have a 112mil row table that I have copied to a new tablespace, which worked fine
I'm then adding indexes to the copied table, but gets huge costs in the plans when trying to do a query using the new index, compared to quirying the original table/indexes
To begin with I tired changing my main index to another tablespace and bigger initial extend, but even if I remove all this, and put it in the same tablespace as the original index and created the same way, I get the same huge difference.
In most om my system queries this will cause that the CBO doesn't use the index, and the queries get very slow. If I do a simple select and the index is actually chosen, even though the cost is huge, the actual query time is the same as the origibal table/query. I cant get the index cost to change by trying different dbms_stats.gather_index_stats settings
Can anybody tell me why this new index comes up with such a huge cost, and what I can do to bring the cost down, so that the index actually gets chosen?
Here are the basic information:
It's on Oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.4) EE
The simplyfied create statement for both the original and the new index:
CREATE INDEX IDX_POS_DATE ON FMC_POS
("UTC_DATE" DESC, FMC_LOGVES_ID)
CREATE INDEX IDX_POS_DATE_P2 ON FMC_POS_p2
("UTC_DATE" DESC, FMC_LOGVES_ID)

You are exactly right. The plan for the original table is to good to be true when searching for recent dates, because the statistics are outdated. If I do searches for older data, I get the same cost for both selects
The funny part is that the outdated to good to be true statistics gives me the better performance for the more complex selects in the system, because the index always gets chosen. I guess I will have to use hints in my complex selects
It's possible that the clustering_factor of the index is not a good model of how well the data really is clustered. The method the optimizer uses to calculate this figure is very naive and can easily be much too high if the data has even a fairly small degree of scatter (relative to the index). You may find that modifying the clustering_factor in a realistic way will solve the problem. Since the optimizer is also pessimistic about branch block caching in nested loops and in-list iterators you could also consider reducing the blevel by 1 or 2 to encourage it to use a good index.
There's a note on my blog about adjusting index stats: http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2010/01/06/copy-stats/

  • Understanding the COST column of an explain plan

    Hello,
    I executed the following query, and obtained the corresponding explain plan:
    select * from isis.clas_rost where cour_off_# = 28
    Description COST Cardinality Bytes
    SELECT STATEMENT, GOAL = FIRST_ROWS               2     10     1540
    TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID     ISIS     CLAS_ROST     2     10     1540
    INDEX RANGE SCAN     ISIS     CLAS_ROST_N2     1 10
    I don't understand how these cost values add up. What is the significance of the cost in each row of the explain plan output?
    By comparison, here is another plan output for the following query:
    select * from isis.clas_rost where clas_rost_# = 28
    Description COST Cardinality Bytes
    SELECT STATEMENT, GOAL = FIRST_ROWS               1     1     154
    TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID     ISIS     CLAS_ROST     1     1     154
    INDEX UNIQUE SCAN     ISIS     CLAS_ROST_U1     1 1
    Thanks!

    For the most part, you probably want to ignore the cost column. The cardinality column is generally what you want to pay attention to.
    Ideally, the cost column is Oracle's estimate of the amount of work that will be required to execute a query. It is a unitless value that attempts to combine the cost of I/O and CPU (depending on the Oracle version and whether CPU costing is enabled) and to scale physical and logical I/O appropriately). As a unitless number, it doesn't really relate to something "real" like the expected number of buffer gets. It is also determined in part by initialization parameters,session settings, system statistics, etc. that may artificially increase or decrease the cost of certain operations.
    Beyond that, however, cost is problematic because it is only as accurate as the optimizer's estimates. If the optimizer's estimates are accurate, that implies that the cost is reasonably representative (in the sense that a query with a cost of 200 will run in less time than a query with a cost of 20000). But if you're looking at a query plan, it's generally because you believe there may be a problem which means that you are inherently suspicious that some of the optimizer's estimates are incorrect. If that's the case, you should generally distrust the cost.

  • Work flow issue related with the cost center

    Hi ,
    I received a strange requirement from my client.
    Right now we are working work flow concept for my client.
    1) Sales Order type should be linked and managed by the cost center.
    2) Each cost center should allow a maximum of 10 pieces for the free of charge order. (Order type FD)
    3) There  must be one-to-one relationship between cost center and reviewer. (Reviewer seem like a authorized person, who approve the free of charge order to the respective customer)
    Please guide me on this regard.
    It will be great help to  me.

    AFAIK, this is a problem with the JRE runtime. Your application/jdk uses some dll's which are either not present in the right directory or are corrupt because you may have installed other jvm on top of the original one.

    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I noticed that you are getting the error, "Device is not listed," while installing the software for your HP Officejet Pro 6230. I am happy to help!
    Some questions for you, if you do not mind:
    How is your printer connected? Wireless, Ethernet, or USB?
    Do you see any blinking lights on the printer?
    Are you able to print a status report? (To print a status report: Load plain white paper into the input tray, and then pull out the tray extender on the output tray. Press and hold the Cancel button for five seconds, and then release it. The test page prints.)
    In the meantime, I would recommend to go through this guide, 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Mac OS X.

  • I dont understand the file.encoding parameter

    Im running Windows Vista and using Intellij Jetbrans.
    I have a file with the name divisionǿ (In case not displayed this is unicode charcter \u01ff) the filename displays fine on In Windows Explorer, and fine within my programs gui, but on StandardOut File.getName() returns it as division?
    Why does it show the question mark, when it can display it ok in a Jtable within the program.
    Also, jetbrains runs with -Dfile.encoding=windows-1252, ( i didnt set this myself). What does this option actually refer to:
    The format that java text files files are encoded in
    The format filenames are encoded in
    or something else
    This isnt just an academic question, it is causing a problem when creating a file and trying to create a script, because it is putting the line with the ? rather than the real charcter in it.
    thanks for any help Paul

    paultaylor wrote:
    The format that java text files files are encoded inThat's the one, but it's much more than that. Any time your program converts bytes to chars or vice versa, it will use the system default encoding unless you specify something else.
    The default encoding on a Windows machine is windows-1252 (or 125-something else, for other locales), and it doesn't support the ǿ character. If you really want to use that character, you should either use Unicode escapes (e.g., \u01ff), or save your source files as UTF-8. If you do save it as UTF-8, you'll also have to specify the encoding when you compile your code.
    However, you still won't be able to display that character on the command line, because its default encoding (cp437 on my machine) doesn't support that character either, and you don't have the option of switching to UTF-8.

    Okay, This subject was just covered in a mag I was reading today..MacWorld. Startup in safe-mode [hold the shift key down when you hear the tone and release it when you see the Apple logo]. One you are booted up open MacintoshHD>System>Library>Extentions. In that folder look for the bt broadband or whatever the update was. It will have .kext on it. Throw it in the trash and restart.
    If you are not sure which it is you could open the Update you installed with Pacifist and search the files of the installer.
    Pacifist can be found at:

  • Dont understand the DefaultComboBoxModel class

    Hi guys... can someone please explain what the lines are doing??
    thanx
    import javax.swing.DefaultComboBoxModel;
    import java.util.Vector;
    public class MyComboModel extends DefaultComboBoxModel{
              public MyComboModel(Vector cars){
                   for (int k=0; k<cars.size(); k++) {
                        String car = (String)cars.elementAt(k);
                        addElement( car);
              public void updateData(Vector cars){
                   removeAllElements();
                   for (int k=0; k<cars.size(); k++) {
                                            String car = (String)cars.elementAt(k);
                                            addElement( car);
                        fireContentsChanged(this,0,cars.size()-1);

    import javax.swing.DefaultComboBoxModel;
    import java.util.Vector;
    public class MyComboModel extends DefaultComboBoxModel{
       /** Constructor of the combo box model with a Vector of data
        * Technically, this constructor is unnecessary because DefaultComboBoxModel
        * already has a constructor for Vectors
       public MyComboModel(Vector cars){
          for (int k=0; k<cars.size(); k++) {
             String car = (String)cars.elementAt(k);
             addElement( car);
       /** Updates the combo box model with a new Vector of data */
       public void updateData(Vector cars){
          removeAllElements();
          for (int k=0; k<cars.size(); k++) {
             String car = (String)cars.elementAt(k);
             addElement( car);
          fireContentsChanged(this,0,cars.size()-1);
    }As it is, this class doesn't seem of great use, because constructor is redundant, and updating
    the model can be done with combobox.setModel(new DefaultComboBoxModel(newVector)).

  • Dont understand the sound bloo bloob bloo, what is that for?

    While I use my mac air it makes weird sound like "bloo bloob bloo" randomly, I cant find any reason and its not in system sounds

    The only way to figure this out is by a process of elimination.
    Log out and log back in. Don't launch any applications. If you get the sound, it's probably caused by one of your login items. Eliminate them until you find the culprit. Less likely, it might be an alert sound caused by a LaunchAgent or some system-level process, but I doubt that.
    If you don't get the sound right after logging in, it's caused by one of the applications you launch yourself.

  • Dont Understand The Yellow Marked SM Bus Cotroller Problem...Why its Yellow Marked

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    It will take a while for the picture to pass the censors....can you give us the model number and a bit of history? Have you recently reloaded Windows? The SMBus Controller is part of the main chipset and you have to make sure that driver is installed. The procedure varies a bit depending on the model.

  • I dont understand the manual

    Hi,
    I was wondering if the Scanclk,extstrobe,pfi0 and many more excluding DI0 to DI7 is consider as a digital signal since it has a reference to DGND in Ni6013 User Manual pg 4-3.
    If it is yes,considering that it has a output, can I config it as a 1 or 0 like Di0.For example I need PF10 to be 1 to activate to a output digital hardware.
    From what I read, TRIG 1 is used to activate with a high transition and if this true, am I able to use it as 1 or 0.
    Question:
    How do I have Labview to read my analog input from PCI-6013?
    Goal: To have a analog input to the labview and show a waveform in the labview.
    Tried: I try using DAQ wizard solution but I cant find my hardware except PCM-something.
    I create a virtual channel
    in the MAX and call it 555 timer.
    Do you have any link to a tutorial that I access concerning this. There are tons of tutorial here and I wondering if u know any exact ones.
    Thanks,

    Halif,
    The PFI lines on the board, when used as outputs, can't be controlled like the board's DIO lines. You are unable to set their logic levels in software. Each PFI line has a specific internal signal that it is able to output (start trigger, scan clock, etc.).
    With regards to a tutorial, I would suggest that you examine the follow document:
    LabVIEW Measurements Manual
    I would also suggest that you examine the examples available in LabVIEW. You should begin with the following analog input example:
    Examples >> Hardware Input & Output >> Traditional DAQ >> Analog Input >> General >> Cont Acq&Chart (buffered).vi
    Good luck wit
    h your application.

    That's what i had thought at first but i'm like nearly 3 miles from the exchange and as you said, i wouldn't of been able to get fibre if i were.
    Do cabinets that support Option 3 with fibre have to of been upgraded?
    Like, is the option 3 with fibre if you're too far from your cabinet? I'm not even sure which cabinet i'm on, but i know there is only one enabled within 2 miles from my house according to fasterbroadbandni.
    I don't see how else i could be getting this package if i'm not connected to that cabinet close to me if this is the case.
    I guess i'll see when the guy comes to install it.
