Index on two columns

Hi
I have a table like
create table tab1(tb1 number, tb2 varchar2(30), tb3 varchar2(30))
I have created two function indexes upper(tb2) and upper(tb3) on the table tab1
I have a select query like
select tb1 from tab1
where upper(tb2) like upper('%test%')
or upper (tb3) like upper('%test%')
Now the problem is it is not using the indexes. If I use union like
select tb1 from tab1
where upper(tb2) like upper('%test%')
union
select tb1 from tab1
where upper (tb3) like upper('%test%')
, it is using both indexes.
Is there any other way to make use of both the indexes

No explain plan created using DBMS_XPLAN.
No help is possible.
Using an index is not necessarily a good thing ... it is just a thing.
Why does it matter? What is the underlying issue?

Looking for a two-column CSS layout

I am looking for a two-column CSS layout that is centered
with blank space
on the sides, so the layout does not expand across the entire
screen, but
instead uses a portion of it (such as 75%). The left column
would be for
navigation and I haven't decided if I want it to be liquid or
fixed, but the
right column for content would be liquid. There would also be
a heading div
and navigation div across the top and a footer across the
bottom.
While looking for sample sites I keep finding ones that use
three columns,
and I'm worried that if I remove the third column that the
layout will break
at some point, even if I don't see it in my test browsers.
I'm also
discovering that some of the sample pages out there don't
respond well when
I resize the browser window. The columns don't have a minimum
width or they
stack on top of each other at some point.
There are so many different techniques to use when designing
a layout with
CSS, some better than others, that I thought maybe some
people here may
already know what's tried and true and what should be
avoided. Are any
layouts robust enough to allow a third column to be added at
a future date
if needed? I also like the idea of putting the content div
first in the
code, to improve search engine indexing and also to aid those
who may be
using a screen reader, but if that feature makes the coding
much more
complex then I could see why I might avoid it for now.

Two-column text

This is driving me nuts. It's not that often that I import text into InDesign. I've got two column page formats set up for an index. I'm placing the index text, which is an RTF file, into this two-column format. And, it just boringly splats itself right across the whole page, damn the two columns. What's this about? Why can't imported text adhere to the columns that are set up?

Yeh, I fixed it, finally. Yes, I had to click, click, click in the text frame and make sure I saw a blinking cursor in there. I actually typed in some text and verified that it was wrapping in the first column, not spanning. Then, I placed my file. And, it finally came in right. I guess you just have to be totally sure that your cursor's there in the 2-column textbox. Sometimes when I brought in the text, it literally create another single-column text frame, on top of the two-column one!

Two column text box with header

I have a text box that is set to flow as two columns. The beginning of the text box has a header then a list of bulleted items. My problem is that when the text flows to the second column, it is set at the top (in-line with the header). What I would like is to do something like set a top margin just for the second column so it will line up with the body text from the first column. Is there an easy way to do this or should I just use two text boxes and position the second box where I want it?

Simplest is to use two text boxes.
Dave Saunders has a script (http://pdsassoc.com/index.php?Nav=downs&Ban=Downloads&Info=downloads.html) that can do it with one text box by putting your head in a one-column table that intrudes into the second column. I've never used his script, and I see his website says CS and CS2, so I'm not sure if it would work with your version.
You could probably achieve what you want (because I see you don't actually need the head to straddle, just the texts to top align with each other) by forcing a huge leading on one character in a frame that's set to First Baseline Offset by Leading.

How do I count the unique value pairs in two columns of a table?

I have a table (Table 2) that is populated with data from an imported .csv file. On table 1 I need to count the unique value pairs in two columns of Table 2.
Here's what I have:

7/10/2011                         A

7/12/2011                         X
7/12/2011                         X
7/12/2011                         X
7/12/2011                         Z
7/14/2011                         Z
7/15/2011                 X
7/16/2011                         Z
I'm focusing on person "X" and can easily count how many days that person shows up but what I want is to see on how many unique days that person shows up.
Here's the result I'm looking for (Person "X" shows up on 2 different days - 3 times on 7/12/2011 and once on 7/15/2011):

I can't seem to find a function that allows me to do that. I also am not allowed to modify Table 2 so that leaves me to come up with a solution on Table 1.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Not being allowed to modify Table 2 is a minor inconvenience. Just copy (using a formula) the necessary two columns onto Table 1.
Yellow columns may be hidden. The procedure progresses from left to right. All formulas are entered into row 2 then filled down that column to the end of the table. The table must be as long as the list in column A of Table 2.
A2: =Table 2::A
Fill right to column B.
Fill both columns down as far as needed.
I've used actual Date and Time values in column A, formatted to show only the Date part, but the technique will work with text in these cells, provided all cells representing the same 'date' have exactly the same content.
C2: =A&B
This concatenates the contents of each row of columns A and B into a single text string.
D2: =COUNTIF($C$2:C2,C)
This counts the number of occurrences of the Date&Name string on the current row from the first regular cell in column C (C2) to the current cell.
E2: =IF(COUNTIF($B$2:B2,B)=1,MAX($E$1:E1)+1,"")
This constructs the index of first occurrences of each name, in the order they first occur. The index is used by LOOKUP in column F.
F2: =IF(ROW()-1>MAX(E),"",LOOKUP(ROW()-1,$E,$B))
This uses the index value created in E as a search-for value to extract a single copy of the names in column B. The result is a list of all distinct names in the list. Note that spelling differences will be counted as distinct names.The IF statement stops the listing when the last distinct name is extracted.
G2: =IF(LEN(F)>0,COUNTIFS($B,"="&F,$D,"=1"),"")
This counts the number of 'first occurrences of distinct Date & Name strings for each name on the list (ie. the number of distinct dates on which each name appears in the original list).

Is there a way to find out how to get the index of a column?

I want to know the index of a column for example the column at the first position in a jtable is 0 so how can i get this index?
for example: the column called "surname" is index 0 but the user can move the column. So the name stays the same but the index of the column changed. I search for a method like
table.getColumnIndex("surname");

I think it really depends on what the OP is trying to do. I think the program

Using Auto Adjustable Fluid Grid Layout Divs to balance two columns

I have a header band, two columns and then a footer band in the layout that I'm working on.I have Div on each side that is set to "Auto" for height so that the two column lengths appear to be the same size when they get to the footer band. That is how I envisioned it, in practice, "Auto" only seems to adjust to the text inside the respective divs.
Something that"hould" be soesy has gotten me banging my head for four days. I thught I had a solution, using "nesting tags" but saw that was not supported.
Any ideas?

How to compare index names and columns from different user?

I am using below query to compare two indexes from 2 different users but even though index name and columns are same... result shows me they are different.. what I am doing wrong? Thanks

but Actually if you check below they are same After when I run this query:

So index_owner is 'USER1' in one case, and 'USER2' in the other; right?
A string that starts with 'USER1' will be distinct from a string that starts with 'USER2', no matter what the rest of the string contains. Maybe you don't want to compare the owners, or maybe you meant to use some other column (such as table_name) instead of index_owner).

If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE, CREATE INDEX and CONNECT statements), and also post the results you want from that data.
Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
Always say which version of Oracle you're using (e.g., 11.2.0.2.0).

Gallery Display Thumbnails in Two Columns

Thanks to Mr. Booth for his excellent tutorial on setting up
a web gallery. This really gave me a great foundation.
My question has to do with controlling how thumbnail images
are displayed on the page. I would like to display two (or three)
columns ot thumbs along with a text title for each. If I were
programming this in C++, I would setup a "for loop" and simply
display the first column with an index of i/2, and the second
column with an index of i/2 + 1, but I can't seem to figure out how
to achieve a similar effect within the confines of HTML.
Here is my code snippet. What I get is two columns of
identical thumbs. How would you change this to make thumbs 1,3,5...
appear in column one, and thumbs 2,4,6... appear in column two? It
seemed to me that using a table was a good way to set this up, but
I'm very new to web programming.

No! It's not possible, but you can try to create an your own heading in TOP-OF-PAGE to write the first heading line, the second one will be the std line .

Two column display

Greetings all,
I had a MovableType blog hosted by Yahoo and I decided to move the files to my Network Solutions account where the domain is registered.
All files were transferred and the DNS changed to point to the new location (http://theargonauts.info/index.html). But the blog, which used to display in two columns, now only displays in one. Previously when I've had this problem it was because there were too many or too few </div> tags at the end of the post where the break is supposed to occur, around line 100 in my Dreamweaver editor. But Dreamweaver doesn't show any unfinished <div> statements and adding or deleting them makes no difference, it still displays in one column. I thought there might be something in the .css but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is.
This is driving me crazy and any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Best way to have an image span two columns in a CSS layout?

My homepage is a typical fixed width three column layout. For the inside, content pages, I basically need the same layout except I need to have an image that spans the left and center columns at the top. Below the image, the left and center columns should continue on. The right column should not change at all m
My first thought is to start with a two column layout where the left column would contain the image. Then, I would divide the left column into two columns that would start below the image, using a top margin or perhaps another appropriate positioning attribute.
But before I create a completely new layout for these pages, I thought I'd check and see if there may be an easier or better way to do this. any ideas?

In either case, I would have needed a second layout but this way was a much simpler modification to the three column index page. I did try it both ways as I'm still a-learning. I'm finally getting to the point where when I set or change a setting - especially positioning attributes like margins, the outcome is what I expect. I have also experimented enough where I see there is often more than one way to produce the desired result. However, I'm afraid that in many of these cases I can't explain why one method might be better, or preferred over another. Or if in some instances it simply doesn't matter, unless the final issue is arriving at the most efficient and lightest amount of code required to do the job (that's what I call the Holy Grail in programming and scripting).
As an audio engineer as well, I'm reminded of certain discussions on how to achieve the best sound for this or that, and after going round and round about effects, the science of acoustics, which plug in works best and for what, often the only thing ever really settled upon is "just go by what sounds the best to you". I digress.
So using the AP div in this case, what, if anything is the downside? Does it matter that its content as well as the rest of the page will be dynamic? I wouldn't think so. Might there be issues with older browsers or mobile browsers? The former is not a concern, but the latter is. Might I be tempted to use an AP div at another time because it's so easy to implement, but then may not be an appropriate use? I think I can properly evaluate that if and when the time comes.
Am I just over-thinking all this? : )

Every column have main term, now i want if the main term of subterm not ending the last column then main term and continued word appear at top of every column.

Error in Word when creating two columns

Hi, first of all, please excuse my bad English, it is not my primary language.
I have a document and I need to "transform" a long passage to 2 columns to save some space. When I do this, something happens with the page count, also in the Index showing page numbers automaticly.
The page that starts with the two columns get page number 1 instead of 5 or 6, and all the following pages with the two columns have this number and the first page after the two columns end gets number 2. I can not reproduce this error in Another document,
But I do not understand why I get it in this.

Looks like splitting the passage has created a new section at the page and it has its own page numbering. Try this:
1. Click anywhere in the wrong-numbered pages.
2. Click the Insert->Page Numbers menu item.
3. Click the Format Page Number… button.
4. Select Continue from previous section radio button.
5. Click OK.

Afaik, it's not possible using only classes provided in java.swing/java.awt packages.
One possible solution is to use custom renderer. By default JList and JComboBox are rendered using single JLabel. Our renderes should use several labels put on panel as rendereing component. Radio Button of two columns to be grouped

Dear Experts,
I have a table with columns like SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE which are wdy_boolean data type and displaying as radio buttons.
The problem is both columns are displaying as selected and want to make these two columns as group so only one can be selected.
I mapped cell variant with other column but its not hit.
Please suggest.

To achieve this functionality do the following
1. Create one context attribute by name 'selectedValue' ( type string) under the context node of the table
2. create two columns in the table with name SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE (as you did already). let the cell editor be RadioButton. Cell variants are not required
3. Now for the SUBSCRIBE radio button, bind the 'selectedKey' property to 'selectedValue' context attribute. And maintain the 'KeyToSelect' property as 'SUBSCRIBE'
4. for the UNSUBSCRIBE radio button, bind the 'selectedKey' property to 'selectedValue' context attribute. And maintain the 'KeyToSelect' property as 'UNSUBSCRIBE'
so whenever the user selects a radiobutton, corresondinf values SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE will be stored in the selectedValue context attribute.
