Index within PDF

I can't seem to find any info on creating a PDF file that has
been previously indexed and subjects cataloged for quick reference
and searching. The reason I ask is I received a PDF file of 350MB
containing 65,000 pages. If I try to search a topic then it takes
too long to go through the entire file. Is there a way to pre-index
the words/topics/subjects and save the PDF so that future searches
don't require an entire search of the PDF file?

select prv_value from ctx_user_preference_values where prv_attribute='PATH'
and prv_preference='MY_PREFERENCE_NAME'
But note that you'll need to rebuild the index before this will take effect.

  • HELP: I need to link a PDF within PDF and be able to open and return to original PDF

    I have a master PDF and have attached 7 supplemental PDF documents. I created "click here" icons and used the steps below so that the linked document would open. The problem is, once I open the supplemental PDF, it closes the original master. I would like to close the linked document and return to the master view. Is there a way to do this?
    Or is there a way to do this from InDesign? I created master file in InDesign and exported as an Interactive PDF.  I created the buttons and linked them to external files. This works great as long as the master PDF and the links are all in one file, but that is a pain to send to a viewer. Ideally, I want to be able to send the master PDF to a viewer and not have to send a links folder. Is there a way to embed the supplemental PDFs into the master so that they are all combined into one file AND have the ability to use buttons to call up one of the attachments, close, and return to the original?
    Thanks in advance!!

    I want to do the same thing that the original poster of this question wants to do. I haven't worked extensively with Acrobat so am finding by trial and error the several ways PDFs within PDFs can be accomplished. I'm using a trial version of Acrobat Pro X and have experimented with three options.
    1 - I've created a Portfolio and am impressed with what that can do, though I think it may be "overkill" for the current size of my project.
    2 - I've also tried creating this project as an index but discovered that the links I'd created in the original docs didn't work when I moved the index and its contents (keeping the file structure the same). I presume this means the links are absolute? I also don't understand how it is that users search a .pdx file, or how to present what I want to be the original opening PDF of indexed docs.
    3 - I've also thought to create one PDF with attached PDFs, so I'd like to have you expand on your comment about creating a master document and attaching documents to it.
    The specifics of my project are these: I have created a master directory that contains approximately 120 links. Most of the links are repeated three times (users can find in the directory the item they need in three different ways: alphabetically, by application, or by module; hence each item listed once in each of three categories). I want to make that directory the "master" PDF that users open first, and then locate within that PDF the 5-8 PDF documents that contain all of the places to which the directory links. I want the "master" directory to be self-contained and completely "portable" as far as all of the documents and links are concerned so that when I make the PDF available from our website users can open the master from there or copy it and have all of the docs they need with all of the links intact. I think I prefer that all docs open in new windows, since returning to the original doesn't seem very user friendly in Acrobat (I like the tabs feature in FoxIt when multiple PDFs are open...).
    I'd like an opinion about the best way to accomplish what I need to do, and am also wondering whether there are other options I am unaware of. BTW, the reason we've decided to document this whole project in PDFs rather than HTML is because this project contains a big number of tables, which do not look consistent across various browsers (i.e., most of our tables look fine in IE and Firefox, but awful in Google Chrome...). In researching my issue on the Acrobat Windows forum I see that rendering tables in Acrobat is also an issue that seems to be unresolved.
    Thank you!

  • Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms does not index my PDF files in SQL server database

    hi all
    I need your help
    i have this asp.net site which works with sql server
    it searches a specific word in the database with full text search
    in my database i have a column of type image that holds a PDF file
    i want my SP to search for given word in my file
    so i installed the Adobe Ifilter
    configured it and every thing worked fine
    but after i moved to production Server and installed every thing the same way ...it did not create the index for the pdf files
    i can search for doc and docx and even for xml but not pdf
    i know i installed it correctly since it is working great in the testing environment
    i used this link for the configuration
    http://www.adobe.com/special/acrobat/configuring_pdf_ifilter_for_ms_sql_server_2005.pdf
    the only difference i see between my Testing environment and my Production environment  is that
    my testing has
    windows sever 2003 sp2 with Sql server 2005 64 bit std sp2   -- works fine
    my production  has
    windows sever 2003 R2sp2 with Sql server 2005 64 bit ent sp3  --does not work, does not index my pdf files
    can you tell me if there are problems with some environments ?
    are there any known problems with this Ifilter ?
    what should i do ..

    Thank you

  • URL to open an inner PDF within PDF portfolio

    Can we open specific inner PDF within PDF portfolio by using URL, like http://www.myserver.com/files/myPDFportfolio.pdf?inner=adc.pdf ?
    Imagine a PDF portfolio that includes following multiples files in it.
    mytest.pdf
    abc.pdf
    test.xls
    test2.doc
    What I want to do is i) click the URL, ii) then open abc.pdf (reside in the PDF portfolio).
    Also this URL can be dynamic so that I can create multiple URLs to open each inner files.
    Any thoughts?
    Thx,
    Keishichi

    You can't specify embedded files via URL.  There are PDF actions of type GoToE that can open embedded files, however.  So inside the PDF you can do this.

  • Embedding Full-text Index into PDF File

    Hello Everyone,
    I've tried to create and embed full-text index into PDF file, but with no luck. I've followed steps described at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WSC28D4DBB-6A78-4027-9E04-F50FE411CFB9.w. html - there can be seen progress of collecting of data and at the end the button Update index is enabled. This is signal for me that Index was created. After clicking on Ok button, saving document as new one and then reopening "new created" document, there is info that no Index is embedded in the Manage Embedded Index dialog. Is there any other step necessary to do? Or is it bug? Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.1 on Windows Vista 32bit is used.
    Jan
    PS: Interesting is also comment at the bottom of above mentioned help page...

    Thanks for the response. It is true that if I make changes and look at the embedded index status, it shows that it needs updating
    However the problem I can't get around after extensive testing is that sometimes for no apparent reason the index is dropped on save. This can happen if I check the status of the index to make sure it is valid, save the file, and reopen it.
    I've concluded that this must be a bug and am using other indexing options for the time being.

  • Problem with indexing a PDF file

    Hi all,
    We can most of the time successfully index PDF files, but sometimes it simply fails to do so. Nothing wrong with the code, but it looks to me that some PDF files are not accepted. Is there some sort of a list from Oracle which tells me what version of PDF is accepted or how they should be made so that Oracle can index the content?

    Hi,
    Reproduced.
    I indexed 5 pdf's downloaded from the internet and yours. Your one pdf is the only one not indexed. All are version 1.4 (right-click | properties | pdf) which is fully supported (see http://www.verity.com/cms/groups/public/documents/collateral/mk0459.pdf for a list of supported formats for the keyview filter, referred to as auto_filter in 10g).
    The differences between the files are:
    Works:
    ============
    Application PScript5.dll Version 5.2
    PDF Producer: Acrobat Distiller 5.0.5 (Windows)
    Fast Web View: No
    Doesn't
    ============
    Application: Adobe InDesign CS2(4.0)
    PDF Producer: Adobe PDF Library 7.0
    Fast Web View: Yes
    I checked to see that the pdf was not simply a scanned image and it wasn't. No errors in CTX_USER_INDEX_ERRORS and the pending record disappears post index sync. No records in the $I table.
    A few possible things to check with support:
    1) If custom fonts are used check with Oracle support on the filter's ability to extract using the custom font.
    2) Are there any known issues with PDF docs generated using InDesign CS2 or with docs created for Fast Web View?
    See bug 3814696 and reference it with your service request. The outcome is not published so I don't know how/if they resolved it. You may want to mention this with your TAR since the scenario is similar, and toss in the differences between the "works" and "doesn't" scenarios that I mention above.
    Hope it helps,
    -Ron

  • TREX doesn't index some PDF documents ...

    Hello all,
    we have installed EP'04s and TREX ver. 7.00.42.00. It works well except one thing. TREX is not able to index some PDF documents. Most of them is indexed correctly but some documents not. Actually the problematic PDF documents are indexed but their content is not. In search result is displayed message "No document excerpt available" for the documents.
    I found SAP Note 622419 that could relate with that but I don't know how can I check:
    1. What encoding was used in particular PDF form.
    2. What fonts or what font types were used in particular PDF form.
    Do you have any idea how to find out these information about a document? Or do you know where could be problem when TREX are able to index content of just some PDF documents?
    Regards,
    Zbynek

    Thank you, that was what I needed.
    So now I know the test PDF document use only TrueType fonts. That means its content should be indexable for TREX but it isn't. There is just message "No document excerpt available" for this document in search results.
    Could someone look at the document and try to index it? It can be downloaded from http://www.volny.cz/kabrtz/TREX/indexing_test.pdf

  • BPM xpath issue with last-index-within-string

    Hey all,
    I have a script task in BPM that updates a field by using multiple xpath functions. I have narrowed the issue down to the oraext:last-index-within-string function.
    If I do something like oraext:last-index-within-string('ora/in/ok/d', '/').....I get 9 like expected.
    But if I base it off the request data like so:
    oraext:last-index-within-string(bpmn:getDataObject('Request')/ns:document/ns1:dDocAccount, '/')........when I go to em I have an internal xpath error.
    I'm assuming it has something to do with using bpmn:getDataObject as a parameter. But I'm not sure what. If I use the getDataObject as a parameter in substring like so:
    substring(bpmn:getDataObject('Request')/ns:document/ns1:dDocAccount, 8)....it works as expected.
    What is it about the combination with last-index-within-string that is giving me an issue??
    Thanks
    John

    Got it. Apparently, sometimes with xpath, you have to concatenate the variable with an empty string to change it into a string....sometimes, but not all the time...yay.... I'm guessing the xpath inbuilt functions already know to convert the variable passed in into a string, whereas the oraext functions don't. I could be completely wrong on that though...:-P . Anyway, this works:
    oraext:last-index-within-string(concat(bpmn:getDataObject('Result')/ns:document/ns1:dDocAccount, ''), '/')
    Thanks,
    John

    I created following Indexes within the XML,
    CREATE INDEX "OCA_DEV"."OCA_STATUS_CODE_INDEX" ON "OCA_DEV"."DOCUMENT_STATUS_XML" (EXTRACTVALUE('/ocaStatus/status/statusCode'));
    CREATE INDEX "OCA_DEV"."OCA_STATUS_DATE_INDEX" ON "OCA_DEV"."DOCUMENT_STATUS_XML" (EXTRACTVALUE('/ocaStatus/status/statusDate'));
    However the problem is that I will be having multiple status within each XML which violates the Indexing.
    Is there any way I can still create the Indexes allowing multiple status values in each XML?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    You may want to store your document as a schema-based, object-relational XMLType to achieve that.
    Then you'll be able to create indexes on the nested table used to store each "status" element.
    Here's an example based on your sample document.
    1) First, create and register a schema. The following is basic but sufficient here, let's call it "ocastatus.xsd" :
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <xsd:schema
    targetNamespace="http://xmlbeans.apache.org/ocastatus"
    xmlns="http://xmlbeans.apache.org/ocastatus"
    elementFormDefault="qualified"
    xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
    xmlns:xdb="http://xmlns.oracle.com/xdb">
    <xsd:element name="ocaStatus" type="OCASTATUS_TYPEType"/>
    <xsd:complexType name="OCASTATUS_TYPEType" xdb:SQLType="OCASTATUS_TYPE">
      <xsd:sequence>
       <xsd:element name="status" type="STATUS_TYPEType" xdb:SQLName="status" maxOccurs="unbounded" xdb:SQLCollType="STATUS_V"/>
      </xsd:sequence>
    </xsd:complexType>
    <xsd:complexType name="STATUS_TYPEType" xdb:SQLType="STATUS_TYPE">
      <xsd:sequence>
       <xsd:element name="statusCode" type="xsd:double" xdb:SQLName="statusCode" xdb:SQLType="NUMBER"/>
       <xsd:element name="statusDate" xdb:SQLName="statusDate" xdb:SQLType="VARCHAR2">

  • Adobe Reader X and searching within PDFs in Outlook 2007

    Hello,
    Is it possible to search within pdfs attached to emails in Outlook 2007 via the search box in Outlook?  I currently have Adobe Acrobat Reader X installed and Outlook 2007.  Is there an iFilter available for this functionality within Reader X or would I need to either go back to Reader 9 or upgrade to a newer version to have this capability?
    Thanks.

    This may help a few of you here.
    I'm running IE 8 and Adobe Reader X on a WIN64Bit  system.
    Reader X wouldn't open an embedded  PDF with IE8 64BIT. AR X seems to like an older version of IE.
    Go to your START menu and you should see "Internet Explorer" and "Internet Explore (64-bit)".
    Open a window with the "Internet Explorer", not the (64-bit).
    In the IE8 window you'll see a "?" on the tool bar. Open it and click on "About Internet Explorer".
    You should NOT SEE "64-bit Edition".
    If you don't see "64-Bit Edition", go and try to view the PDF again.
    It works for me and it seems I'll have to live with it until there's a patch for 64-Bit.

  • Index-within-string

    I have an xml string and there's a tag called </ErrorDescription>, I want to find where in the string does this tag begins. I used
    oraext:index-within-string(<inputstring>,'</ErrorDescription>') but I got the xpath error. I think it's because of the slash character (/).
    How do I escape it please?

    Hi,
    First try getting the xml as string using ora:getContentAsString and then use above function.

    It appears that filtering  and selecting from #XML_Hold  is TIME taking .

  • Link to page within PDF file.

    Hi all,
    We have some large PDFs that we currently store on an apache server. Because of the number of pages (over 33,000) we created sort of an index page using html that users could quickly search in and then select a name that is a link to the correct page in the PDF. This worked like a charm. We are working to move the old website that was on the apache server into Vibe. I haven't been able to get the setup we have for the large PDFs to transfer into Vibe as the PDF will open using the permalink, but the PDF just opens to its first page. Following is an example of the link from the apache server.
    http://www/Notices/2012/MVCTax201205....PDF#page=1905
    We just took the permalink and added the #page=1905 to it. As indicated, it opens the PDF, but only to the first page.
    Does anyone know of some way to make this work, or is it likely to be impossible within the constraints of Vibe? I would really like to just be able to search the PDF using Vibe's indexing, but it appears either size or format is an issue. Any other thoughts on how this could be accomplished would be appreciated as well.
    Thanks, Don.

    Thanks for your response Erik. I think I had already increased these, but I need to confirm as I may have missed something.

    I can't help you at the moment regarding your "PDF#page" problem.
    But increasing the max size of a document's index and the number of
    words and terms to be indexed per document is well documented. You just
    have to find the section in the docs ;-)
    Here we are: '4.12.4 Increasing the Number of Words That Are Indexed
    for Each Document'
    (http://www.novell.com/documentation/...c.html#bxirext)
    You should adapt your settings for lucene.max.fieldlength,
    doc.conversion.size.threshold and
    doc.max.text.extraction.size.threshold. I can't tell which settings
    might fit in your case as you are using extraordinary large documents.
    Just give it a try ;-)
    HTH
    Cheers

  • How can I allow visitors to my website to search within pdf documents created with Acrobat?

    I honestly had no idea where to place this question. If I should move it to another forum area please just let me know. I have about 200-300 pdf documents on my website and people are able to search by the title of the file but not for items in the body of the document. Is there a way that is possible?

    Are the documents encrypted? If they are not, the common search engines (Google, etc) will normally index all the text in a PDF, the same as if it was a regular Web page. They don't index non-text media within a PDF (images, attachments, etc.) nor will they handle PDF Portfolios.
