"index.xml missing" • Do I laugh, cry, or scream?

After a variety of hardware problems with my iBook (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1523536&tstart=0), I have a new software-related problem.
Some of my Pages files are acting up on me. When I try to open said files from Finder or from inside Pages I get the "index.xml missing" message (I'm using the iWork '08 demo version I downloaded today--I can't access the multiple licensed copy of iWork on the install disk from my IT guy until tomorrow).
When I open the package contents of the problem files, sure enough--there's serious data missing. How could this have happened to some of my files by not all of them? (Hierarchy/where the files are located within my Documents folder doesn't make a difference. All the files were created by the most recent version of Pages too....)
Am I totally screwed?!? Please tell me there's some way to salvage my files.

Hello
I met this kind of behavior when I tried to use from account B a document created in account A.
As I am most often playing safety, I had a backup but I know than even if we repeat million times "computers are not perfect so, always keep backups", users will continue to miss this rule … until they loose some important data.
I don't know which kind of code removes the Index.xml.gz files so I'm not sure that a file recovery tool would be able to revive them.
You may try to use one of them but I can't guarantee the result.

  • "index.xml" missing in Pages document

I had made some changes to a Pages file, as chose "Save As..." to keep the original document intact. I got the spinning beachball and after waiting for several minutes had to Force Quit. Now when I try to open the new document it tells me the file is invalid and the index.xml file is missing. Looking at the package contents I can only see the audio, video, and images from the document. Is there anyway to recover my text changes?

The file may not be gone, but you may have lost links to the images.
    To recover the file:
    REMOVE THE PAGES "WRAPPER"
Press the [control] key and click on the hosed file.
Scroll to Get Info and select it
In the Name & Extenstion box, delete the ".pages" extension so that "myfilename.pages" reads "myfilename" and press [Enter].
Don't worry about the "will open in another application" warning. We'll put the extension back when we're done. Click [Okay] at the confirmation dialog.
The file is now displayed as what it is, a folder containing multiple files.
    CORRECT THE PROBLEM
Next open the folder "myfilename" and browse to the index.xml file.
In my case, the offending issue was that the index file had been renamed to "index(xxxxx).xml.gz" by my syncing software. The icon identified the file as a gzip archive, so I simply edited the filename to read: "index.xml.gz" (without quotation marks).
Presuming the author of the previous post is correct and your file is no longer gzipped, you'll need to get a archive utility. Stuffit Standard has a 30-day free trial and is available at
    http://www.stuffit.com/cgi-bin/stuffit_loginpage.cgi?standardmac
Other utilities, freeware, shareware and commercial, are available as well. Download one and Gzip the file and delete (or move) the unarchived "index.xml" file out of the "myfilename" folder. (Note that there are MANY different achive formats. I don't know if any will work other than the gzip that I found mine in.)
PUT THE FOLDER BACK IN THE "WRAPPER"
Back in the File Info dialog, click in the Name & Extenstion box, add the ".pages" extension after the last letter of "myfilename" so that it reads "myfilename.pages" and press [Enter].
Double-click you reconstructed Pages document. If you get a warning your only option at this point is to click [Continue]. At least you still have the text and layout. The only thing I've lost in the past is the images. You can relink them to their boxes.
    Hope this works!

  • Can't Open iBook Author File - index.xml "missing"

I've been working on a new book for about two weeks now. I've opened, closed, saved and changed it many times. I went to open the book today in iBook Author to continue adding content and I got this error message:
"'Book Name' couldn't be opened. The required index.xml file is missing."
I've tried re-installing iBooks, accessing the the file under a different user name, but everytime I'm getting the same error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've already spent about 40 hours with this book and I'd hate to loose all my work.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

I know this is a few weeks old, but I just had this happen and here is how I fixed it:
Duplicate the .iba file (the iBooks Author project) to your desktop or wherever you'd like.
Next, delete the .iba extension and make it .zip and click "Use .zip" when the dialog box pops up.
Then, double-click your newly created ZIP file. It will extract to a folder in the same directory.
Now, add the .iba extension to this folder. It will pop up another dialog box asking if you want to do this, click "Use .iba".
    Your file should work now.

  • Anyone having a problem with the latest number software. Docs do not open Invalid. The index .xml file is missing?

I have been having problems since updating to the latest version of Numbers.
When I try to open files I am getting an error.
"The document “'13 Tax Prep .numbers” is invalid.
    The index.xml file is missing."
Anyone else getting this message? Anyone know how to fix the issue?

    Jeff Shenk wrote:
Numbers 3.1 can recognize both the new files without the index.xml file and the old ones with it, which it imports to the new format.
Agreed on that part.  But take it a step further.  If Numbers 3.1 is asked to open an old document that is still in the old Numbers 2 format that relies on an index.xml file but Numbers 3.1 can't find the index.xml file (perhaps the document is corrupted) then how can Numbers 3.1 open the document and interpret it in order to convert it to the new format? My guess is that this a possible trigger for the 'index.xml missing' error message.
Interesting link here on the new document format.

  • I can't open pages files from USB and iCloud due to : "The necessary file index.xml is missing".

I can't open pages files from USB and iCloud due to : "The necessary file index.xml is missing". Original file is written on iMac (2014) and saved to an USB stick and then transferred till macBook Pro (2009, Yosemite) for editing. Then I shared the files by iCloud but I am not able to open them on iMac again. Niether can I use the USB stick to transfer the edited files back. I'm running Pages '09 4,1 (923) on the macBook and Pges 5.5.2 (2120) on the iMac.

Pages 5.5.2 is extremely incompatible with even other Macs let alone the vast majority of PC and MsWord users out there, so not a good idea to leap into the fire with both eyes shut.
After having done that to the first Pages 5 files, Apple has repeatedly done it to even the most minor point updates. Apple can't even anticipate its own erratic changes let alone what everyone else needs doing.

  • I saved docs from a iMac to a flashdrive but when I plug the flashdrive into an iBookG4 and try to open the docs on the flashdrive, I get this message: Doc 2 cannot be opened. The required index.xml file is missing.

I saved docs from a iMac to a flashdrive but when I plug the flashdrive into an iBookG4 and try to open the docs on the flashdrive, I get this message: Doc 2 cannot be opened. The required index.xml file is missing. Does this mean that I can't use the info on the flashdrive with the iBookG4 or can I do something to get the required index.xml file?

It appears if you write the document with newer version Pages and try to open it older version Pages.

Are you sure you haven't upgraded Pages on your Mac to Pages 5?
Check your Applications folder and the Applications/iWork folder. You may have 2 versions on your Mac.

  • Pages can´t open a file due to index.xml is missing

After writing 138 pages of my PhD-Thesis and I have only 7 days left I got the error message can´t open file - index.xml is missing - shocking! So I called the support because I thought it can´t be lost due to the fully active preview - only pages did not want to open the file.
But I found a solution by surfing in different forum discussions and I want here to summarize, what to do.
    1. A pages document is an archive - unfortunately in the latest version (iwork09) it is not signed as such anymore, what made older forum discussions quite irritating - but the tric is to rename the file to.zip and unpack the zip file.
    2. Then it is possible to see if the index.xml is there (in my case) or if it is renamed to index-new.xml
in my case it was just possible to open this index file in textedit and save it again - if it has been renamed to index-new - simply save it after opening as index.xml.
the rename the whole folder back to a pages document with the ending .pages and open it in pages like usual by double click.
just as small aid for all other users with important document
please post herer if there were more problem or other solutions with this index.xml file
    Regards!

I changed the file to .pages.zip and it still will not open up or unzip .. what do i do ?

  • Numbers 09 not working - I can open the program but only a few files are available, missing blank, checklist and many others. e.g  when I click on a file I get this error: The document "nmbtemplate is invalid. The index.xml file is missing. help.

Please let me know what I can do to get my Numbers (iWork 09) working properly again.
Here is what is going on:
Numbers in iWork 09 not working can't access Blank, Checklist and many other files within Numbers.   I can open the program but only a few files are available. When I click on the file (which also has no icon just the name of the file) this warning appears:
The document "Blank.nmbtemplate" is invalid.  The index.xml file is missing.
I recently had to get a new hard drive installed and had the system upgraded and more memory put in by a Mac certified specialist recommended to me from the Apple store in Northbrook because this was the 3rd time my drive went bad but this time it was to old (I got the IMAC- in 2007) and the Apple store could no longer work on it this time so they recommended a few places that had certified Mac specialists.  Since then Numbers is not working right.
I'm sure it's something simple to fix, but I've tried re installing it and that didn't work.  Appreciate any help.
    Thanks

There is one way its getting fixed. Once I update my Adobe Illustrator CC to Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 it is further allowing me to go into the system folder and allocate the font to the file so that it can replace it. My only concern now is that our MAC partners who will receive these files back from us have Adobe CS6. We will down save it to CS6 but I hope they won't experience any font issues because of us using CC 2014? Any light you can shed on this?

  • HT202879 How do I fix "the required index.xml file is missing?" when opening Pages documents?

I can't open any documents from my son's iPad.  Error message: the required index.xml file is missing.  How do I fix this error so that I can open his Pages documents?  Before I ran the latest update as prompted when I opened Pages, I WAS able to open and view the document.
I did try restoring Pages using my Time Machine, but it still won't open the Pages document.
I have a brand new iMac that I just set up last week.
Son uses iPad at school, so we update when the school asks him to update.  Will doublecheck his version of Pages but it should be pretty recent.
In general I don't like using Pages because it lacks a lot of the backwards / forwards compatibilty of Microsoft Word.
However, it is what my son uses with the iPad.
Most of the time I have to export his files as WORD files because we never seem to have compatible versions of Pages between the iPad and the desktop iMacs.
Where can I recommend that Apple improve its compatibility issues with Pages?
This week I am going to receive a new iPad at my school (I am a teacher) but I am 100% certain that it will not be compatible with the older version of Pages on my classroom iMac.  I also avoid using Keynote for the same reason.  I have 15 year old Power Points that I can still open, but I am hesitant to switch over to Keynote because I want to be able to open my files any time, any where.
    Please advise.

Not sure what v5 is. Someone helped me and opened it through Pages 5.2, through the program, rather than the Finder. Thanks for making a suggestion!

  • Index.xml file is missing...can't open document I created awhile back

I created a document before Christmas on Numbers, saved it, and now cannot open it. It is telling me that the index.xml file is missing every time I try to open it. I opened the contents of the package, and there is no index.xml file there.
I haven't done anything with the file other than converting it to a .pdf to email. It has a lot of important info on it, and my time machine can't recover it....any ideas?

    Hello
I don't know which tool you used to search the Index.xml.gz files.
There is one of them in every document created by an iWork's application.
Don't exchange them between two documents. They ARE the document. In fact they are the description of everything which is needed to build what you get on the screen.
Remember, a file generated by an iWork's component is a package which is a speacial kind of folder.
press ctrl when selection the icon of one of them.
    A contextual menu will appear.
Select the item :"Show package's contents" to get what you see on the screenshot.
I really don't know what failed.
To get rid of that, use the preference I described in my late message.
Don't forget that when we use a computer, the most important word is BACKUP (I'm not shouting but I'm not far from doing so).

  • "Document name invalid.  The index.xml file is missing"

I have OSX Yosemite 10.10 and am having a problem just today in Numbers.  A file that I have saved to my desktop and opened daily to input data since the first of November won't open.  It gives me a message that the file is invalid, the "index.xml file is missing"   Running Numbers '09 version 2.3   Have been run ing Yosemite 10.10 for quite some time.  How can I open/retrieve the file?

I am having the same problem.  I am also running Yosemite 10.10.  The last I accessed the file was on November 13, 2014. I have been noticing that the layout /view of the file with the program has been a little different for about a week before then.  I have not upgraded to the newer version although it is constantly asking to upgrade. Still running Number '09, Version 2.3. I am very concerned as the file I am accessing contains critical records that go back for several years. I am not having problems opening .numbers files that are a couple of years old. Thanks for any help.

An original Numbers ’09 v2.3 document will save as a compressed zip archive that has its extension renamed .numbers. It contains an index.xml file. If you double-click this Numbers ’09 document, it will open in Numbers ’09 v2.3. This is contrary to how Pages v5.5.1 handles Pages ’09 documents.
You have to explicitly open a Numbers ’09 v2.3 document in Numbers v3.5. When you make a change, Numbers v3.5 will drop a sheet dialog that is very clear in its portent:
Would you like to upgrade this Numbers '09 spreadsheet?
    Edit a Copy
    Cancel
    Upgrade
When you choose either the Edit a Copy, or Upgrade — and save your changes, the resulting document is now in the new document architecture whose structure no longer uses the index.xml file. Double-clicking this new document format will now default to Numbers v3.5 on open, not Numbers '09 v2.3. You have to explicitly choose Open with Numbers (2.3) from the contextual menu to get the pop-op below because Pages v5.5.1, Numbers v3.5, and Keynote 6.5 documents are not backwards compatible.

  • Iweb 1.1.2 won't open, error message, index.xml file is missing

    i am using version 1.1.2
i opened iweb and made a very very minor correction.
i went into 'inspector' and saw that 'make all links inactive'
was checked so i unchecked. i published and when i opened it again
it was checked. so i made an extremely minor change on one of my pages....
changed the angle of a drop shadow 1 degree....then published again.
now iweb will not open. i get an error message that says
'index.xml file is missing. none of my copies of the domain file will
open. none. including old copies that i copied to a disc. all domain files
whether on the hd or exterior drives get the same error message.
i'm guessing that some how that file got corrupted.
how do i install iweb again and if so how do i retrieve all my work?

I't not iWeb that got damaged but the domain file. The index.xml file is inside the domain.sites file that's located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Do you have a backup of that file you can revert to?  If so then do it.  Otherwise a long shot but try the following:
    close iWeb.
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • Index.xml file is missing

I am routinely experiencing problems with both .numbers and .pages since I upgraded to the "free" Mavericks OS.  For some of the files, the posts within this forum have been helpful, but for one file (.numbers) I haven't found a solution.  I am running OS X Mavericks (10.9.1) on an iMac (late 2009 model) with Numbers 3.0.1.
When I double-click on the file, I get the "the index.xml file is missing".  When I try "Open With" command, I get 2 choices: Numbers (default) (3.0.1) and Numbers 2.1.  Clicking on the (3.0.1) prompt results in the following message "You need a newer version of the Numbers to open this spreadsheet".  Clicking on the (2.1) prompt just gets me the same "index.xml" error message.
I have used "Show Package Contents" which indicates that I have an index.xml.zip file, but uncompressing the .zip file doesn't seem to provide any further solution options.
    Thanks.
    Ty

right click on the icon, choose open with, click the default and it will open.. not sure why this works instead of double clicking
also double check to make sure the file is not trying to open in the wrong version of the application
