"index.xml" missing in Pages document

I had made some changes to a Pages file, as chose "Save As..." to keep the original document intact. I got the spinning beachball and after waiting for several minutes had to Force Quit. Now when I try to open the new document it tells me the file is invalid and the index.xml file is missing. Looking at the package contents I can only see the audio, video, and images from the document. Is there anyway to recover my text changes?

The file may not be gone, but you may have lost links to the images.
To recover the file:
REMOVE THE PAGES "WRAPPER"
Press the [control] key and click on the hosed file.
Scroll to Get Info and select it
In the Name & Extenstion box, delete the ".pages" extension so that "myfilename.pages" reads "myfilename" and press [Enter].
Don't worry about the "will open in another application" warning. We'll put the extension back when we're done. Click [Okay] at the confirmation dialog.
The file is now displayed as what it is, a folder containing multiple files.
CORRECT THE PROBLEM
Next open the folder "myfilename" and browse to the index.xml file.
In my case, the offending issue was that the index file had been renamed to "index(xxxxx).xml.gz" by my syncing software. The icon identified the file as a gzip archive, so I simply edited the filename to read: "index.xml.gz" (without quotation marks).
Presuming the author of the previous post is correct and your file is no longer gzipped, you'll need to get a archive utility. Stuffit Standard has a 30-day free trial and is available at
http://www.stuffit.com/cgi-bin/stuffit_loginpage.cgi?standardmac
Other utilities, freeware, shareware and commercial, are available as well. Download one and Gzip the file and delete (or move) the unarchived "index.xml" file out of the "myfilename" folder. (Note that there are MANY different achive formats. I don't know if any will work other than the gzip that I found mine in.)
PUT THE FOLDER BACK IN THE "WRAPPER"
Back in the File Info dialog, click in the Name & Extenstion box, add the ".pages" extension after the last letter of "myfilename" so that it reads "myfilename.pages" and press [Enter].
Double-click you reconstructed Pages document. If you get a warning your only option at this point is to click [Continue]. At least you still have the text and layout. The only thing I've lost in the past is the images. You can relink them to their boxes.
Hope this works!

  • "index.xml missing" • Do I laugh, cry, or scream?

After a variety of hardware problems with my iBook (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1523536&tstart=0), I have a new software-related problem.
Some of my Pages files are acting up on me. When I try to open said files from Finder or from inside Pages I get the "index.xml missing" message (I'm using the iWork '08 demo version I downloaded today--I can't access the multiple licensed copy of iWork on the install disk from my IT guy until tomorrow).
When I open the package contents of the problem files, sure enough--there's serious data missing. How could this have happened to some of my files by not all of them? (Hierarchy/where the files are located within my Documents folder doesn't make a difference. All the files were created by the most recent version of Pages too....)
Am I totally screwed?!? Please tell me there's some way to salvage my files.

    Hello
I met this kind of behavior when I tried to use from account B a document created in account A.
As I am most often playing safety, I had a backup but I know than even if we repeat million times "computers are not perfect so, always keep backups", users will continue to miss this rule … until they loose some important data.
I don't know which kind of code removes the Index.xml.gz files so I'm not sure that a file recovery tool would be able to revive them.
You may try to use one of them but I can't guarantee the result.

  • Can't Open iBook Author File - index.xml "missing"

I've been working on a new book for about two weeks now. I've opened, closed, saved and changed it many times. I went to open the book today in iBook Author to continue adding content and I got this error message:
"'Book Name' couldn't be opened. The required index.xml file is missing."
I've tried re-installing iBooks, accessing the the file under a different user name, but everytime I'm getting the same error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've already spent about 40 hours with this book and I'd hate to loose all my work.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

I know this is a few weeks old, but I just had this happen and here is how I fixed it:
Duplicate the .iba file (the iBooks Author project) to your desktop or wherever you'd like.
Next, delete the .iba extension and make it .zip and click "Use .zip" when the dialog box pops up.
Then, double-click your newly created ZIP file. It will extract to a folder in the same directory.
Now, add the .iba extension to this folder. It will pop up another dialog box asking if you want to do this, click "Use .iba".
    Your file should work now.

  • Cannot open pages documents "index.xml file is missing"

Working on an iMac Mountain lion and using pages 3.0.3.  Just today, none of my pages documents will open.  I haven't stored anything in the cloud, I haven't changes anything, just working on the pages documents  simple text.
The last thing I did with it was to print the file, as I have so often before.  I have a MacBook with the same pages app, but running on Yosemite -- bought a new version of pages.
The MacBook will open .pages files stored on that hard drive, but files taken from the iMac will not open on the MacBook.
I'm in a tight.  I have a vast number of documents as I've been using pages for years.

By default, Pages v5.5.2 on Yosemite saves out a Single File format document, which is a compressed renamed zip folder that the Finder allows us to believe is a document. When you attempt to open that document from within Pages '08, or Pages '09, you get the following dialog:
The Pages v5 generation documents do not use an internal index.xml file. Pages v5.5.2 also allows one to change that single file format document into a package file format document, which is not a compressed, renamed folder. When you open one of these package format documents in the older Pages applications, you now get a different dialog message. The index.xml file is still missing, but…
If you are using Pages '08 v3.0.3, or Pages '09 v4.3, there are no newer versions of these applications available. This is an Apple attempt to steer users to a Yosemite update, and then downgrade to the latest Pages applications that now require Yosemite. They could have just said, “we made a document format that is incompatible with older Pages applications.”

  • The dreaded "The required index.xml file is missing." message...

Using Pages '09 on a 10.6.8 iMac. My file is about 3.6MB in size, have been editing it for a few months now. All of a sudden I get:
    "JournalManuscriptV12.pages" couldn't be opened.
The required index.xml file is missing.
So I uncompress the .pages file, and yes index.xml is there, along with Preview.pdf (which opens and has all my updates). I uncompress an older working version of my .pages file and get its index.xml file and stick it into the current one, recompress it and rename it to .pages, but it results in the same error in Pages. Ditto with the Preview.pdf file.
Is there any way to "sanitize" the index.xml file so Pages will accept it? I'm looking at potentially a week's worth of work down the drain as I just discovered my TM backup drive is toast.

    * * * * *   S O L U T I O N   * * * * *
Here's how I just repaired my .pages document for which Pages '09 proclaimed:
The required index.xml file is missing
    1. Rename MyDocument.pages to MyDocument.zip
    2. Uncompress MyDocument.zip by double-clicking it in the Finder
    3. This results in a folder named MyDocument with NO extension
    4. Add the .pages extension onto the folder filename: MyDocument.pages
    5. Double-click MyDocument.pages in the Finder. It opens!
Not sure what's going on here, but it looks like Pages sometimes chokes on the auto-uncompress of the file into a folder when opening it. This has been an ongoing problem with Pages since its inception.
Hope this helps others stuck in this situation. Just saved myself a week of work! ;-)

  • "The required index.xml file is missing."

    Hello everyone !
I created a pages files a couple of days ago.
I modified it successfully yesterday, by adding some jpeg files in it.
But, now i can't open it.
The massage is "The required index.xml file is missing."
Although I still can have a "quick look" at my file.
This is the first and only time I've had this.
    What can I do ?
    Thank you for your concern.

    speckel wrote:
I tried using the .zip trick, but it doesn't work...
May you explain what means "it doesn't work".
I know what means "it works" : we get a package in which we may find the Index.xml file
"It doesn't work" may means :
    (1) double click the zip file can't expand the file
    (2) it expands it but there is no index.xml file in the resulting package
    (3) it expands, there is an index.xml file but Pages can't use it
It's a bit odd but we get the same error message in the three cases
In case 1, your unique help is the pdf displayed in Preview.
In case 2 & 3, you may retrieve your picture files if you inserted some of them.
In case 3, sometimes, we may extract the text contents when a preview.pdf isn't available but for you, it's unneeded as the preview is available. So, you may extract the text component with a Copy/Paste action.
CAUTION : I hope that this stupid accident will help you to understand that computers aren't perfect tools. When we use them, the main rule is *_keep incremental (chronological) backups_*. This will give you the ability to retrieve an usable document among a set of consecutive copies.
You may achieve this goal with :
    (1) my free autosave script (dedicated to iWork)
    (2) the application ForeverSave which apply to every applications but is not free (to get incremental backups).

  • Anyone having a problem with the latest number software. Docs do not open Invalid. The index .xml file is missing?

I have been having problems since updating to the latest version of Numbers.
When I try to open files I am getting an error.
"The document “'13 Tax Prep .numbers” is invalid.
    The index.xml file is missing."
Anyone else getting this message? Anyone know how to fix the issue?

    Jeff Shenk wrote:
Numbers 3.1 can recognize both the new files without the index.xml file and the old ones with it, which it imports to the new format.
Agreed on that part.  But take it a step further.  If Numbers 3.1 is asked to open an old document that is still in the old Numbers 2 format that relies on an index.xml file but Numbers 3.1 can't find the index.xml file (perhaps the document is corrupted) then how can Numbers 3.1 open the document and interpret it in order to convert it to the new format? My guess is that this a possible trigger for the 'index.xml missing' error message.
Interesting link here on the new document format.

  • Why can't I open Pages documents transferred from iPad?

I am unable to open Pages 09 documents transferred via iTunes and USB cable to my iMac (OS 10.6.8), error indicates  "index.xml" missing. Where does that come from?

Pages 2 on the iPad uses Pages 5 file format, but even that can vary as Pages 5 and Pages 5.01 on the Mac can't open Pages 5.1 files.
Yes you are right, the whole thing is one ginormous mess, thanks be to Apple.
Far from getting painless round transfer between iOS, OSX and PCs we are getting in practice very limited compatibility even between Macs and iOS devices and reports of files that abruptly refuse to open anywhere and can not be rescued because they are in an overly complicated file format.
Go to the iTunes Store and the App Store and rate/review the latest Pages.

  • Custom icon reverts to standard Pages document icon...

I'm having trouble with permanently assigning custom icons to Pages '08 documents.
Say I've got a document, I'll create an icon, set the icon via the info panel, everything is fine. The next time I click on the document with the new icon, the document opens and the custom icon disappears, reverting to the stock Pages icon.
This doesn't seem to be a problem with any other documents or folders from other programs, just Pages '08.
But I'm thinking this is more likely an OS issue than a Pages issue.
    Thanks

For some reason, the custom icon is deleted. (Bet that comes as a shock.) I have an old version but it is apparently no different. Essentially a Pages document is a folder that Finder treats like a single file:
    ls -a test.pages/
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict index.xml.gz
    ../ Contents/ thumbs/
When you add a custom icon, a file is added to the folder:
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict Icon? thumbs/
    ../ Contents/ index.xml.gz
When Pages backs up the document it includes the custom icon in the document:
    ls -a Backup\ of\ test.pages/
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict Icon? thumbs/
    ../ Contents/ index.xml.gz
But it disappears from the original:
    ls -a test.pages/
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict index.xml.gz
    ../ Contents/ thumbs/
(So next time, it disappears from the backup, too.)
It almost looks as though Pages renames the original document to create the backup and then creates a new "original" but this isn't correct because the filenode numbers stay the same on the original. So I don't know what causes it but it seems to be something peculiar to Pages so I'm not sure how it could be avoided except by not using Pages or not giving Pages documents custom icons.

  • Lost iCloud Pages Document because of xml index missing- finally resolved!

This morning I opened a Pages document in the cloud and started making changes to it the same as I have a hundred times in the past.  The dreaded spinning ball appeared and I force quit Pages.  Upon trying to open the same document I got the dreaded "xml index is missing".  I callled tech support and was told by the first person that there is no way to recover the document.  I also asked if Time Machine would have backed it up and he said NO, there is no way of recovering it if I didn't make a copy of it.  I called Apple Support again and this time talked to a lady who at least tried to help me, but we weren't making any progress.  I then found an article online (after searching earlier for the xml issue) that said Time Machine DOES backup Mobile Documents under the ~Library/Mobile Documents unless you specifically tell it not to.  Luckily this person insisted that it backs up mobile documents because I was able to recover the document from a Time Machine backup.  Thank you to the person who posted about the Time Machine backup!  Now Apple needs to let their Tech Support people know about this!

    Hank,
You were wise to search for answers here. There's no doubt that there is more collective wisdom in these discussions than you would expect to encounter in one first-echelon phone support person. You are also wise to be using TimeMachine so you have that recovery option available to you.

  • HT202879 How do I fix "the required index.xml file is missing?" when opening Pages documents?

I can't open any documents from my son's iPad.  Error message: the required index.xml file is missing.  How do I fix this error so that I can open his Pages documents?  Before I ran the latest update as prompted when I opened Pages, I WAS able to open and view the document.
I did try restoring Pages using my Time Machine, but it still won't open the Pages document.
I have a brand new iMac that I just set up last week.
Son uses iPad at school, so we update when the school asks him to update.  Will doublecheck his version of Pages but it should be pretty recent.
In general I don't like using Pages because it lacks a lot of the backwards / forwards compatibilty of Microsoft Word.
However, it is what my son uses with the iPad.
Most of the time I have to export his files as WORD files because we never seem to have compatible versions of Pages between the iPad and the desktop iMacs.
Where can I recommend that Apple improve its compatibility issues with Pages?
This week I am going to receive a new iPad at my school (I am a teacher) but I am 100% certain that it will not be compatible with the older version of Pages on my classroom iMac.  I also avoid using Keynote for the same reason.  I have 15 year old Power Points that I can still open, but I am hesitant to switch over to Keynote because I want to be able to open my files any time, any where.
    Please advise.

Not sure what v5 is. Someone helped me and opened it through Pages 5.2, through the program, rather than the Finder. Thanks for making a suggestion!

When attempting to open a file that was created prior to up-grading to the new "pages" it says "cannot open file the index.xml file is missing??"  What can I do to fix this??

Reopen these documents with the correct version (5) of Pages. Only Pages '09 documents contain an index.xml, and when you try to open a Pages v5 document in Pages '09, you get that dialog box.

I have “hundreds” of pages documents that were created with pre Pages 09 that will not open now that I have upgraded to Pages 09. In every case I get the error “The required index.xml file is missing“.
I need a way to fix this or it will cost me many dollars since these files constitute legal backup for earlier federal jobs.
Anyone out there that can help rather than telling me to open (which I can’t) and save in Pages 08 format!

If a Pages '08 document doesn't open in Pages '09, the problem is not Pages '09, it's that the document is corrupted.
