Indexed color and transparency in PNGs

I'm working with a software developer who is revising his subtitle rendering application to meet my company's specifications. The renderer produces an image sequence, and we agreed on using PNGs with a transparent background as the format for the image sequence. The renderer is producing PNGs in Indexed Color mode, so Photoshop and Windows Photo Viewer recognize the transparent background, but Premiere Pro CS5.5 and CS6 don't. I can re-save one of the PNGs after switching it to RGB mode in Photoshop, and then Premiere Pro recognizes the transparency. I'm not surprised by any of that. What I am surprised by is that the software developer says he can import the same PNGs, without switching to RGB mode, into his copy of Premiere Pro CS3, and Premiere recognizes the transparency.
Is there anything I can do besides batch processing in Photoshop to get Premiere Pro CS5.5 or 6 to recognize the transparency in an Indexed Color PNG? Has something changed since CS3? I did look under Modify>Interpret Footage to make sure that my Ignore Alpha Channel box is unchecked for the PNGs, but I can't find another relevant setting to check, and I can't figure out why CS3 would be able to recognize an Indexed Color PNG.

PNG's need to be RGB.
CS3 was a long time ago..
You can however import gif in indexed color with transparancy.

Spot Colors and Transparency

In posters, brochures etc. designed with gradients,(AI10) when saving, I always get the "when spot colors are used w/transparency, changing them to process colors outside of illustrator can generate unexpected results."
My printer wants spot colors and that's what he gets. I use grays a lot 'cause client can't afford colors. He prepares the plates with the required dot intensities which go to another printer who prints all. So far, things have worked out OK. However, I worry when clients want photos included, and I'm not sure what I'm doing is just luck, or the way to go.
I open a .jpg in PS7,duplicate it as grayscale .psd,adjust and drag it on to a 150 or 300 ppi transparent background and save it. It's then "placed" in AI where it's needed and finished there.
With only 1 previous experience working in this manner, the brochure worked fine. So, just what exactly is that darn warning above telling me?
Do I continue to ignore it as I did the first time? Any suggestions for working with photos? I'd like to be more than just "lucky" and not have a failed work as a final product....thanks much...........m

It's telling you that if you are printing full process CMYK, then the spot colors will be converted to CMYK and it's not guaranteed that the spot color will look the same. There is always a shift in color gamut when converting to CMYK. As you are only printing to spot colors or grey, the warning doesn't apply.

Spot colors and Transparency causing Overprint knock-out

Whenever I create a PDF from InDesign (CS3) I get missing artefacts/items on print production.
It is caused by a transparent PSD file being laid over a spot color.
I print a /ps file and then Distill to Press Quality.
Overprint preview in ACrobat Pro shows what I need by overprint off I lose info - this causes immense problems at all the pre-pre studios I use.
Any pointers to a cure/reason?

For one, please do not go through PostScript , rather export to PDF directly. When doing so, you may want to do the transparency flattening either during PDF export (i.e. in Indesign) or later on in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Going through PostScript/distilling adds extra potential for issues.
Next, any print service provider who is not in a position to deal reliably with overprints, does not deserve a contract from a high profile client. Rather, find print service providers who are up to the task. A decent print service provider should produce a result that is visually very very close to what you see in Adobe Acrobat Pro having turned on Overprint Simulation and Output Preview. If the output from a print service provider suffers from missing portions or other artifacts (as those that can be seen when Overprint simulation and Overprint Preview are turned off in Acrobat Pro) then that print service provider is simply failing.
Finally - as pointed out by Jon, the best approach is to keep the transparency in your PDFs alive and find print service providers that can deal with it (because for example they have a workflow based on the Adobe PDF Print Engine).

Special color and transparency

Just recently I encounter one problem in Illustrator. Text in special pantone color applied on the background and used drop shadow. After I converted to PDF using print ps and distilled. But in the PDF, i saw some white parts came out on the text instead of pantone. So I tried another method using export PDF. The result looked fine but it came out again after went trough the RIP. (We used Fuji celebral workflow).
Anybody can help?

Pantone spot colour and transparency don't work together

Using indesign CS5, I make a pantone solid spot colour background.
I import two of the same photos: one a greyscale circular pshop file with transparency surrounding the circle ( the file is not flattened).
The other is the same photo, but I make a clipping path around the circle and then flatten the file and save as a jpg.
Both photos are put on top of the pantone solid color background in Indesign.
I export the indesign file as pdfx 1a using pdf-presets under the file menu.
If I open the pdf in Acrobat and open the "output preview" panel and turn off the "simulate overprinting" box, the pshop photo disappears, but the jpg with the clipping path is fine. They print as they appear: one disappears (Pshop file) and one is OK: the jpg.
If you import the pdfx 1a pdf back into Indesign, you will see that the pshop image has disappeared.
I understand this happens to others not just me. is there a fix?
Does it work with all a spot colours and transparency?
If I save as a higher version of acrobat (say 7). The pdf looks fine and imports back into indesign fine.
And if I send to the RIP the RIP seems to handle it fine. But if I take that Acrobat 7 file and put on a page and export as pdx-1a, I get the same problem

Spot colors and Transparency do not play well together, but can be used together if you follow some rules.
jpg does not support transparency. If you're working within InDesign, you can, and should save as and use psd or tiff. Tiff supports transparency if toggled during the Save As dialog.
x1/a pdf does not support transparency, hence it was lost. In my environment, Press Quality PDF has never failed me, but High Quality and x4 have added benefits of Color Management.

The following line tells me that this is not a template file, but a document created from a template called index.dwt

This means that you saved a child document as a template file at some stage.
If you go to Modify->Templates->Detach from Template, you can remove the template structure from your document. All you then need to do is to re-save the document as a template.

After fixing z-index layers lost container color and footer

I fixed the layers, but lost the container background and footer. The editable text box within the footer for credits shows up at the top. You realize that the code you show below is for a Template page, not a child page, right? And you also realize that your layout method is going to be just a big problem for you because of your use of absolute positioning as a primary layout method, right? I'm just trying to make sure that you want to push ahead with what I consider a badly flawed approach....

Edit a png file... change colors and text and then export to gif?

First I want to state that I am VERY new to Fireworks and I am trying to figure out how this works! I typically use Photoshop.
I was sent a PNG file (from a friend). The file has many buttons on it that I believe are somehow saved or exported out as gif images to be buttons on her website. All of the buttons are basic rectangles that are gray with black text. She was told she could edit all of the buttons quickly in Fireworks (change their color, font color, etc) and it would change them all together. Then save them all out so we would have the individual gif files for the buttons to save to the directory.
So... I am able to open the png file in Fireworks and I can select each button or all of them, but I cannot see how to change their color and font, etc. I know this must be very simple! Can someone help me?

Have a look in the ocument Library panel to see if the buttons are Symbols. If yes, then double click on one of the buttons to open it in the symbol editor where you can easily make changes in all of them at once.

Saving Color and Depth data as png to filestream

I try to save both color and depth data to separate files as PNGs using PngBitmapEncoder but I get much less depth frames saved than color.
If I save color as Jpeg with JpegBitmapEncoder and depth as PNG using PngBitmapEncoder I get the same amount of frames from both streams.
Can anyone explain me why?

performance of the write operations and the operations of the system at the time you are calling them. You need to ensure your functions are returning and releasing(disposing) of the frames faster than the callback times. When you hold onto data to
long, that just prevents your application from getting new data.
Have a look at the coordinate mapping sample from the toolkit for a way to copy both the depth and color at the same time. From there you need to create a new thread to save that data since write speeds are very slow.

Watermark, color space, and transparency problem

I'm having a problem with inserting a watermark image into my pdfs.
I created the watermark image in Photoshop. It is 8-bit gray with a transparent background. I saved it as a pdf (pdf 1.4 to allow transparency).
The main pdfs (to be watermarked) are created through a seperate process (they are scans of old book pages). The pdfs are produced from 8-bit gray tiff images, but I cannot determine what color space the these pdfs are.
To the problem: in Acrobat 9, when I insert the watermark above, all of the blacks on the page shift to grey, as if the opacity was shifted lower. The opacity is set to 100%, so this should not be a problem! The watermark does have a transparent background, though.
Since this seems to be a color space conflict, if I save the watermark PDF in CYMK or RGB, it does not cause the tonal shift (blacks remain true), but the watermark now has an opaque background. I need it to be transparent, as the background of the files to be watermarked are not tonally consistent (old discolored paper).
I guess these are my questions:
(1) Is there any way to determine the color space of a PDF? File->Properties does not list color space.
(2) Why does the watermark PDF, saved in CYMK or RGB, not allow a transparent background? Is this an Acrobat issue or color space?
(3) Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this? :)

First, I have 2 questions: 1) How do the color and watermark background look when you have Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview open? 2) What version of Acrobat are you working in?
The most common reason that people see an almost "washed out" appearance (or looking as though additional opacity is applied) is due to a bug in Acrobat 8. This was fixed in the 8.1 dot release. One way to determine if this is what you are running into is to view the file with the Output Preview dialog open. If it views correctly then, make sure you have the update installed.
I don't work with watermarks, but understanding the general concept of watermarks it seems like a reasonable guess that they would use overprinting. I'm wonder if this is what is affecting the display of them (non-transparent background) since Acrobat needs Overprint Preview ON to accurately display objects with overprint flags . As with above, turning on Output Preview will help you deduce if that's what is happening since Output Preview automatically enables Overprint Preview (which is off by default).
BTW, Preflight will let you know what color spaces are in PDF file. Run any Profile. In the results panel, drop down the "Overview" section. There you will find a color spaces section listing the color spaces of the document.

Why can't I change the transparent color and font color in IOS 7?

Who thought all this WHITE AND TRANSPARENT color looks appealing?
Why can't I change the color of the folders and text?
I already tried inverting the colors and then it washes out the photos I use as my wallpaper.
I love everything, so far, except this transparent issue.

That's very sad those colors can't be changed. They really look ugly.

Export Flash image to Illustrator : bad colors and no transparency

I've tried to export my vector work from Flash to
Illustrator.
The result is bad : colors have faded and transparent colors
became opaque.
It is a shame that Flash doesn't provide a correct export
function to
Illustrator now that Flash and Illustrator are both Adobe's
softwares.
Does somebody know a better way or software to export
Flash/SWF vector
images to Illustrator or PDF?

FEATURE REQUESTS: Border Panel and Transparency slider for bg color

Some points:
1) "Color" by itself is a dubious panel name. Color of what? Please use the existing CSS property names wherever possible, and separate out background color and border color.
2) Transparency sliders need to be enabled for all color pickers everywhere in the UI. RGBA everywhere, always. No hex colors, ever, please. There's just no reason anymore.
2) Border sides need to be separately tweenable in the UI. I've posted about this before. Here's a bit more detail: Use a 1-to-4 toggle button at the top of the Borders Panel to go back and forth between a simplified and a four-separate-borders interface. Something similar to what you've done in the Corners Panel. I've mocked up the panel UI below.
4) Hire me as junior interface designer on this program.

You're right about selecting opacity in the color picker. That's probably cleaner. But it doesn't bother me in the slightest that a border with an alpha is rendered over the background-color. That's CSS. (Just use a bg color of "none" if that's what you need.)
In response:
1) Please don't use CSS "outline" for any heavy lifting in Edge. The interoperability problems are currently massive. For one thing, Firefox draws outlines outside of any box-shadow, contrary to the spec. This bug has festered for three years now, and shows no sign of ever being fixed:

The other big limitation is that outline edges are always square, and can't be rounded. To create what you're calling an "external" border just use a box shadow with no blur. This is a standard practice, and renders well. Whatever you do, please don't make a panel called "borders" that actually creates box-shadows. The answer is education and evangelism, not mislabelling things.
2) Borders don't change the external dimensions of an element if you use border-box globally. Positioning doesn't get the least bit "out of whack." There shouldn't be any trepidation there. This is probably how Edge should work across the board, for all elements, especially if the math of box-sizing is getting you and your engineering team down For folks who aren't hip to this yet, see this fiddle:

Any ideas on how to make it work?

You are not supposed to connect a pair of speakers(as in left and right in a stereo pair)to two separate out jacks on the sound card.the place on the card where headphones/speakers with the mini jack goes is the right place.
