'Indexed on' colour

Morning everyone,
I'm encountering a repetitive problem that is proving near impossible to solve. I'm trying to edit some four-colour black images to mono, using the Acrobat 'Edit Image' tool to edit with Photoshop, however on PDFs created through pretty much any means, however generically through Distiller, there is a colour setting that is completely un-recognised by Photoshop and simply cannot be editted to fix the four-colour elements of the image.
We're using Enfocus Pitstop 8 with Acrobat Professional 9 and Distiller 9, and the setting reads on Pitstop as 'Indexed on' colour. For example 'Indexed on CMYK' 'Indexed on RGB' and even 'Indexed on ICC profile' etc.
I need to be able to edit these images, but Photoshop doesn't recognise this strange colour-space, and thows it out.
Now, using Pitstop you can change the colour from RGB to CMYK to LAB to ICC Profile, anything you like, but you cannot remove that prefix 'Indexed on' and as far as I know that's what's causing all my woes. After speaking with Enfocus for a few weeks now, we can't solve this with their software, no way no how, so I have come to seek answers from the Adobe experts instead.
Does anybody else have knowledge of, experience of dealing with, or possibly a solution to this problem?
My thanks in advance.
Dominic.

Thanks for your help guys, but unfortunately for everybody here who's time I've wasted, the answer didn't come from Adobe or Enfocus; It was our network!
I can't explain this very well, but there's a problem with Thursby Dave Networking version 7.1.2 This update causes a loss of all type and creator files when accessed actross a network to a FAT file system (or similar, such as a NetApp Filer). As far as I understand it, when accessing the PDF in question across the network I was completely unable to extract the images to Photoshop because it lost all the data in the process of transferring it to the machine in question.
The reason it wasn't happening with other images was simply because the colour space information for basic CMYK, RGB, etc. was recognised regardless of the transfer-induced data loss, however because the colour space 'Indexed on' isn't a default type, it caused an error.
So believe it or not, the error was not in the software, the mac configuration or the file setup, just with the network configuration we work with.
(For anybody else getting a problem with their OSX10.5 machines across a network with Dave Networking 7.1.2, try the short-term fix that worked for us: uninstall Dave and re-install the basic 7.1 package and the problem is fixed.)
Thankyou everyone for your time and effort, and I apologise for wasting it.
PS; Thanks Glenn, Andy say's Hi, we're at the Shaftesbury branch. If you want to drop him a line look up the Blackmore official number on our site (won't put it in text here) and amend the last three digits to 149.

  • CCM TREX indexing error

    To CCM gurus,
    Once in a while, I'd get indexing errors while trying to publish a procurement catalog. The errors would say something like:
    1. Error when deleting TREX metadata for catalog ABC...
    2. Error when creating the index for catalog XYZ...
    3. Error in search index update; discarding existing changes
    And then the catalog update is terminated. What we normally do is restarting the TREX server and then we can publish again.
    My question is...can we resolve this without having to restart TREX each time? Is there a way to re-index TREX without restarting it?
    Regards,
    SN

    Hi SN,
    You can check the 'health' of the TREX indexes specific to CCM by use of report /CCM/CHECK_TREX (you need at least CCM 2.0 SP4 for this). In this report, if the index is either orange or red, it is not usable, if it is green it is fine. If the index is coloured red or orange, drill into this index and there will be some short text indicating what the problem with the index is. Once inside this index it can be deleted using the delete (trashcan) icon - in this case, a full publication is required to regenerate the index from fresh.
    It may also be possible to use report /CCM/RECREATE_INDEX providing the index is still valid on the trex server.

  • Photoshop CC saves PNG files bigger than some PNG-specific tools

    Hey,
    as a web-developer i'm working with PNG files alot. Since the release of Photoshop CC i always need to go back to CS6 for saving what i did in CC. I thought maybe it's just an early bug which will be fixed soon but still nothing and annoying. Maybe i missed something and there is a benefit in this bigger files? So here is a short discription...
    When saving a PNG file
    ( file > save as > PNG > Compression: Smallest/Slow and Interlaced: None )
    the files saved in Photoshop CC are about 17kb bigger compared to the saving in Photoshop CS6
    A former 0,3kb PNG file gets saved with 17kb in Photoshop CC.
    I use the English Windows 64bit Version of Photoshop CS6 and CC.
    A fix would be very appreciated.
    Screenshot of both files:
    Thanks,
    Bye!

    Chris and Idothings:
    Here's a quick example that explains what I am talking about:
    Download this 32bit png, and open in Photoshop:
    http://www.estructor.biz/testje/heading.psd
    In Photoshop, the only options in the save for web dialog I have for png are these:
    and
    Since I require the alpha channel to remain intact, I am forced to export to a 32bit png (png-24 with transparency checked). Png-8 would be a much better choice, since this image could be optimized with a limited colour palette, but Photoshop does not allow a full alpha channel to be included in that case. In short, a pixel's transparency is either on or off in 8bit png mode.
    In Photoline I can choose a png with 32768 colours and full alpha transparency. This reduces the file size while I retain full visual quality.
    Fireworks offers us an additional option:
    Png 8 bit with Alpha Transparency. This gives us the power of full transparency and a limited index-based colour pallette. It also results in a much reduced file size.
    Unfortunately, Fireworks' colour reduction algoritms are quite old, and you cannot really choose 128 colours: it wrecks the quality (in this case, at least). With manual colour choices this could be improved, but the time this would take kinda defeats the purpose of having a web optimization tool.
    One other disadvantage to Fireworks: no further development. Adobe killed it.
    Often 256 indexed colours are not enough. Color Quantize goes one step further, and allows for a limited colour palette of 512, 1024, 2048 and 4096:
    This gives a web front end developer an incredible control over a limited colour palette, and yields the best balance between file size and visual quality, while retaining a full alpha channel. Color Quantizer also includes a very simple quality mask brush tool to paint over areas that must remain identical in quality.  The colour reduction algoritms are top-notch, so with the sample image even 128 colours are visually quite acceptable.
    Final results:
    Photoshop: full 32bit png - 254kb
    Photoline: 32768 colours 32bit png - 207kb
    Photoline: 256 colours 32bit png - 170kb
    Fireworks: 256 colour 8bit png + 8bit alpha channel - 54kb
    Color Quantizer: 256 colour 8bit png + 8bit alpha channel: 50kb
    Color Quantizer: 128 colour 8bit png+ 8bit alpha channel: 41kb
    Do I really have to explain any further? You'd have to be mad as a hatter to continue to use Photoshop for png optimization once you start to realize how limited its png output options are. Luckily, Color Quantizer (and ImageAlpha for mac) is completely free: so export to a 32bit png, and optimize in those.It will save a LOT of bandwidth.
    Chris, you are correct in stating the png export options have not changed since v5.5 - it shows. Photoshop is stuck in the nineties as far as web export is concerned.
    Oh, and one more thing: Photoline, Color Quantizer and ImageAlpha offer a wealth of dithering algoritms. While Photoshop users are limited to diffusion, pattern and noise, in Color Quantizer I have six different options plus other options to control the final colour reduction.
    PS I could not check ImageAlpha for the mac, since I work on a WIndows machine at home. In my classes I do demonstrate ImageAlpha to the students, and it gives comparable results to Color Quantizer (since both use, I believe, the same colour reduction algoritms) at a low 128 colours. I recall a file size of around 46kb.

  • Changes, or loss of quality when changing from Indexed Colour to RGB or Gray Scale?

    I am using a canon scanner 700 to scan old photographs and plans/maps for high resolution publication. The plans and photographs are both in colour and in bl/wh and grayscale. I usually scan in gray scale unless its an important, coloured plan.
    I am unable to scan through c5 for some reason. Its a 64 bit dell M4400, W7. All legal, all working fine.
    I use the program canon supplies (Canon MP Navigator EX 2.1) and choose grayscale, 1200 dpi. No problem so far. Output seems great when I open in photoshop.
    However, the files open in Indexed Colour mode, and not grey scale as I scanned them in.
    My questions are :
    a) why does it open in indexed colour mode?
    b) is there any loss of information if I simply change them into grey scale?
    I need the files in high res for professional publication in large format, but also for analysis of dimensions. So I cannot afford ANY transformation or loss of info.
    Hope somebody can help me out!

    Why have all the white colours in my GIF files look grey? It is only apparant once published, and can change from browser to browser? (firefox tends to work, but not chrome)
    They should have white backgrounds. I have played with just about every setting when exporting the GIF in photoshop. And seems to work fine.
    But when published through muse it's grey??

  • Change the colour of my submenu in spry-UI-1.7

    hello,
    as the title says, how do i change the background colour of my submenu (the one that collapses)  and the hover action background.
    i created it with the widget browser, but found out this colour doesnt work so well.
    in my spry-UI-1.7>css>Menu>basic i have two .css files
    SpryMenuBasic.css
    this is the css:
    @charset "UTF-8";
    /* SpryMenuBasic.css - version 0.5 - Spry Pre-Release 1.7 */

    /* This is the css for a basic Spry 2 MenuBar.
    * The first section is basic layout, and should in general not need to be  modified.
    * The final section of this file specifies images to use for arrows for the menu. These
    * are either down or right-pointing as required by horizonatal or vertical layouts. You
    * can either replace the referenced images with your own, or you can modify these rules to
    * point to your won images.
    * These rules are supplemented by those specified in the OAM file for inclusion in the html document,
    * or alternatively, the file SpryMenuBarBasicSkin.css which is included with this widget. */

    /* SpryMenuBasicSkin.css - version 0.5 - Spry Pre-Release 1.7 */
    /* Copyright (c) 2010. Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved. */
    /* This is the skinning css for a basic Spry 2 MenuBar.
    * You can use this CSS as a starting point for skinning an instance of the SpryMenuBar widget */
    /* The rules in this file  assume the following widget classes for menu layout:
    MenuBar - Applies to all menubars - default is horizontal bar, all submenus are vertical. 2nd level subs
      and beyond are pull-right.
    MenuBarVertical - vertical main bar; all submenus are pull-right.
    These should be set as the 'WidgetClass' in the widget constructor. If the menu is to be vertical, pass both names,
    space-delimited. For example: WidgetClass: "MenuBar MenuBarVertical".
    You can also pass in extra classnames to set your desired top level menu bar layout. They only apply to horizontal menu bars:
    MenuBarLeftShrink - The menu bar will be horizontally 'shrinkwrapped' to be just large enough to hold its items, and left aligned
    MenuBarRightShrink - Just like MenuBarLeftShrink, but right aligned
    MenuBarFixedLeft - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedLeft', and left aligned.
    MenuBarFixedCentered -  - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedCentered',
    and centered in its parent container.
    MenuBarFullwidth - Grows to fill its parent container width.
    eg: WidgetClass: "MenuBar MenuBarLeftShrink"
    .MenuBar  {
    background-color:#cccccc;
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; /* Specify fonts on on MenuBar and subMenu MenuItemContainer, so MenuItemContainer,
    MenuItem, and MenuItemLabel

    100% on submenu fonts. */

    /* IE6 rules - you can delete these if you do not want to support IE6 */
    /* A note about multiple classes in IE6.
    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element for selection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu" (MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in a selector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6 ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets the specificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs as significant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lot of these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes for modern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for
    * the selector is high enough to beat the single-class rule in the "both classes match" case. We place the IE6 rule at the end of the
    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these, as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js script.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by  the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser is Internet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditional comments for these rules.
    .SpryIsIE6 .MenuBar .MenuBarView .MenuItemWithSubMenuHover .MenuItemLabel /* IE6 selector  */{
    background-color: #999999; /* consider exposing this prop separately*/
    color: #000000;
    .SpryIsIE6 .MenuBar .MenuBarView .SubMenu .MenuItemWithSubMenuHover .MenuItemLabel/* IE6 selector  */{
    background-color: #cccccc; /* consider exposing this prop separately*/
    color: #333333;
    .SpryIsIE6 .MenuBar .SubMenu .SubMenu  /* IE6 selector  */{
    margin-left: -0px; /* Compensates for at least part of an IE6 "double padding" version of the "double margin" bug */
    what is the rule i nedd to change? i think the background colour of the submenu is lightgray #CCCCCC right now, and the hover one is a darker colour.
    thanks!

    I am sorry to have to point out to you that you have changed SpryMenuBasicSkin.css so much that it is impossible to render any assistance.
    To start with, the menubar has an ID of MenuBar, yet in the CSS I only see this referenced as a CLASS as in
    .MenuBar  {
    background-color:#cccccc;
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; /* Specify fonts on on MenuBar and subMenu MenuItemContainer, so MenuItemContainer,
    MenuItem, and MenuItemLabel
    at a given level all use same definition for ems.
    Note that this means the size is also inherited to child submenus,
    so use caution in using relative sizes other than
    100% on submenu fonts. */
    font-weight: normal;
    font-size: 16px;
    font-style: normal;
    padding:0;
    border-color: #ffffff #ffffff #ffffff #ffffff;
    border-width:0px;
    border-style: none none none none;
    I would suggest to start again.
    Once you have done that, supply a link to your site and we will assist you further.

  • How can I make my program run faster ? (changing colour indicators quicker)

    Hi everyone, I have a program with 100 indicator colour backgrounds that change according to 100 temperatures. A case structure (with 100 cases) sets the background colours one after the other and runs in a while loop with no timing (as fast as possible). The temperatures are loaded up from an array that is initialized at the beginning of the program. The idea is to have an overall view of the change of temperatures (just by looking at the change of colours). Everything works fine except that it doesn’t run fast enough... The change of colours is not smooth at all ... you can really see the increments. It works fine with 20 temperatures for instance. 1) Would anybody have a solution to improve this? I was wondering if Labview perhaps actualises all of the values each time one changes (just like with the excel cells: an option that you can desactivate and make things run quicker when you use a macro) which would make a big loss of time....
    There is no data saving this is just a post treatment program. So My my program isn't doing anything else.
     2) I have attached a screen print of a problem a faced when making up the VI I attached. Why can’t I wire directly to the Index Array that is in the For Loop in my VI… I had to go throw a shift register to make up the example. When going back to my original program I couldn’t use the index array a second time (screen shot). Thanks a lot for any help, Regards, User

  • Weird colour shift on TV through HDMI

    Hi,
    I'm using my TV with XBMC to watch videos on my computer more comfortably, but even since I changed my computer the image get those weird shifts where it goes black for about a second, comes back on looking weird, then about 20 seconds later it's one second of black and then back on as normal again. But if I change channel on my TV when it happens, and then switch back to the HDMI channel corresponding to my computer, the image is fixed. I've tried timing this issue, and it seems to appear roughly every 20 minutes, but it can appear twice in 5 minutes, or not at all in 40...
    Because an image is worth a hundred words, I took a picture with my phone during one of these colour shifts, here's what it looks like: http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3284/imag0063gc.jpg . As you can see by the xbmc menu looking weird too, this is not the video's fault.
    I've also tried switching the cable, but the issue remains. I've been using this setup for a while, but as I said, I changed computer recently, and part of this change was going from a nVidia card to an ATI one, more specifically a radeon HD 7870, and I'm using the official AMD driver (which is kind of required, since the free driver apparently doesn't support sound over HDMI for my card yet).
    It's probably worth mentioning that my primary display, which is plugged in VGA, does not have this issue. Also, I have a Windows dual-boot, but I have yet to test if this issue also appears on Windows (which is kind of a pain to do, due to the randomness of my issue...).
    I've tried googling this for days and have yet to find anyone reporting the same issue, but seeing how English isn't my native language, I might not have used the right keywords...
    Because I guess this is relevant, here is my xorg.conf on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/2eWPKnt2 . This was generated using amdcccle, so it should be legit (though I do miss nvidia-settings, amd got some work to do on their GUI tool). Not sure if this is relevant, but just in case : to launch the computer on my TV, I use this xorg.conf (named xorg.conf.TV in my system), and start X with the following command (through an alias, of course):
    xinit .xinitrcTV -- /usr/bin/X :1 -config xorg.conf.TV
    And my .xinitrcTV containing the following:
    setxkbmap fr
    xbmc
    xterm
    So here I am, and I don't really have any idea what I could do to fix this problem... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I can't change the colour of linked text?

    I have a black background on the side of my web page containing the menu bars which requires the link text to be white so it can be
    seen. I also have it set to change to yellow when you hover over it.
    The problem is that this setting seems universal throughout the website and I cannot get the links in general text (such as 'contact
    us' links, etc) on each page to change colour - they default to white which doesn't show up as the background is also white.
    i have tried creating a CSS rule for links in the body of a page but to no avail.
    Can I change the colour of links on different parts of the website?
    I am relatively new to dreamweaver with little knowledge of CSS, etc but I'm sure this must be possible.

    Yes it is possible to have differen coloured links..
    You need to look at Pseudo-classes / descendant selectors:

  • Advice on best office grade A3 graphics colour printer/copier

    Currently we lease a Canon iR2200 (which is black & white) via IKON in the UK:
    http://www.canon-europe.com/ForWork/Products/Office_Print_Copy_Solutions/Digital_IRSeries/iR2200/index.asp?ComponentID=25508&SourcePageID=26027
    http://www.uk.ikon.com/
    But we're looking for a colour machine (we're an architects office). We've been offered the Canon CLC3220 by IKON, with a EFI Fiery Printer Controller (most features of which is a Windows only as I can work out).
    The thing is IKON only supply Canon and Ricoh machines, and they warned me off Xerox, I can't remember his reasons. In any case I'm wondering if there's a printer/copier of this sort of grade with better support for Mac OS X? For instance, the DocuColor 240/250 has a fully Mac OS X version of the EFI Fiery Printer Controller (but is probably out of our price range):
    http://www.office.xerox.com/color-multifunction/docucolor-240-250/spec-enus.html
    I guess the question is, can anyone recommend other printer/copier lease companies in the UK, who are graphics and mac-centric.

    At first they didn't like it. We were using a CLC1180 with a Fiery Z800, but it was needing to be serviced regularly (jams and colour drop-out). So we updated to the iR C3220 and the first thing the folks noticed was that the prints were flat compared to the glossy output from the CLC. The reason was explained to them about the different toner used on the new printer and therefore there was no longer a need for additional silicone in the fuser. However, it took some time before they accepted the new look.
    From a network/functionality perspective the machine was fine. We had few issues, apart from Quark and the now documented Fiery cups filter error. What the users liked the most was the ability to proof on heavy stocks (200gsm) and print on SRA3.
    But now we have the 5180, everyone is using the new toy rather than playing with the 3220 which is still connected as a backup.

    Paul

  • Anyone know how to make an "Index Transparent" gif

    I have successfully made transparent PNGs and GIFusing an Alpha transparency but now I need to make images which would be the same as ueing fireworks / Photoshop to make a colour transparent. i.e. indexed transparency.
    Does anyone know how to do this.
    My code is as follows :
    // configure all of the parameters
    String text = "ABC abc XYZ xyz ["+ new Date()+"]";
    String font_file = "./tst/Maiandb.TTF";
    font_file = request.getRealPath(font_file);

    Color background = Color.white;
    Color color = Color.black;
    Font font = Font.createFont(Font.TRUETYPE_FONT, new FileInputStream(font_file));
    font = font.deriveFont(size);
    buffer = new java.awt.image.BufferedImage(1,1,java.awt.image.BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);

    java.awt.geom.Rectangle2D bounds = font.getStringBounds(text,fc);
    // calculate the size of the text
    width = (int) bounds.getWidth();
    height = (int) bounds.getHeight();
    // prepare some output
    buffer = new java.awt.image.BufferedImage(width, height, java.awt.image.BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);

    g2.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_ALPHA_INTERPOLATION, RenderingHints.VALUE_ALPHA_INTERPOLATION_QUALITY);
    g2.setFont(font);
    // actually do the drawing
    Color transparent = new Color(0, 0, 0, 0);
    g2.setColor(transparent);

  • Drop Down by Index in Table

    Hi
    I wish to have a drop down by index field in my table but only in certain cells in one particular row.
    Once the value has been chosen I wish to then colour the two cells above the drop down.
    Is this possible?
    Regards
    Ian

    Hello Ian,
    if the coloring was you only requirement, then there won't be a different between the ALV and the standard table in terms of coding. So this requirement should make the difference. Using ALV vs. standard table is usually decided on additional factors, like if users would like to use the additional options provided by ALV.
    Best regards,
    Thomas

  • Colour Range Tool not Working in CC as it did in CS6.

    Hi,  I'm currently trying out Ps CC and have realised that the Colour Range tool is not working as it did in CS6. Rather than selecting the solid colour sampled by the eye dropper (in this case pink from a blue and pink design) it is selecting fragments of both colours. No amount of playing with the sliders is improving the selection clarity. Does anybody have a solution? Thanks Kayle.
