Indexing back for 12 hours +

Hi,
First, I have tried all the tips I could from the sticky tips etc from the top of this forum. No dice.
I am trying to start a time machine backup from fresh
- completely empty 1tb Lacie USB2 drive
- was used for time machine backups for 1-2 years previously
- was working until I had to swap out my 'new' 640gig WD drive (see other forums about why)
Now running a 500gb 7200rpm Hitachi Travelstar. Everything is good except Time Machine wont backup.
I have checked the disk for faults, erased it several times, renamed it, repaired it with Disk Warrior, used a Lacie D2 500gb firewire drive.
I have also followed the tips of deleting the preferences, disabling Time Machine, turning off the disks, restarting, all in the correct order.
All result in the same error.
Time Machine Buddy reports
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/ericTimeMachine/Backups.backupdb
Backup content size: 371.1 GB excluded items size: 80.5 GB for volume Macintosh HD
No pre-backup thinning needed: 348.71 GB requested (including padding), 930.57 GB available
This backup started at 09:13 this morning, using the Lacie 1tb USB2 drive. In my time zone its now 18:42.
Any idea anyone, as I am having to resort to Carbon Copy Cloner, and whilst this is a great tool, I would rather Time Machine did it for me.
The USB drive is connected to the rear of my 24" cinema display, with the Macbook Pro plugged into that. To test the function of this drive I copied an 18gig folder to the disk and then deleted. All ok.
The firewire drive was directly connected to the MBP.
Cheers
Eric

Did that show any errors?
Try it with the drive connected directly to your Mac -- no hubs, no daisy-chaining, etc.
Also try a combination of ports and cables -- a plug that works fine in one port may not make full contact in another.
But if you're getting exactly the same condition with both a USB drive and a F/W drive, and in both cases the drive was empty, formatted properly, and connected directly to your Mac, then there may be something corrupted in your installation of OSX.
If so, I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate (If you're not on 10.5.8, either use this to upgrade, or change the "8" to whatever's appropriate.) Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
But don't delete the update yet; if that doesn't help, your next step will be to do an "Archive and Install" of Leopard, followed by the "combo" again. See the *Archive & Install* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for instructions.

  • TS4006 I was able to get a location on my stolen MBP but I didn't get the email notification in time to log into to iCloud to view the location, it is only viewable for 24 hours. Does anybody know how to get that info back? I've been on the phone w/Apple

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to get in touch with iCloud support directly? All iCloud support roads lead to CPU tech support. My stolen MBP finally came online and gave a location but I didn't check my email for a couple days, was sick, and iCloud only displays location map for 24 hours. Desperatly trying to regain the location info. I live in a small town so location info might actually lead to the recovery of my baby.

    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers

    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My iPhone 4S is dark, this is the second time.  The first time i was able to get it back on by plugging in into my PC.  However this time i have had it plugged in for an hour or so and nothing.  I have done the Start/sleep buttons

My iPhone 4s is dark, this is the second time.  The first time I was able to get it back up and running by plugging it into my PC.  However this time it has been plugged in for an hour or more and nothing. There was still at least 70% charge left on it when it went dead.  I have pressed the sleep and start button separately and together.  It said that I did not have much space left this morning so I deleted Apps and photos but there was still space.  Just two days ago it was losing power even though it still 55% charge left so I plugged it in and it seemed to gain power.  Any suggestions on the problem?

Sounds like faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take to Apple for quick (minutes) free battery diagnostic testing. If you have Warranty or AppleCare the problem will be covered.

  • My iPad has been syncing for 18   hours since I am trying to do the iCloud thing.  What happens if I stop the back up process? Getting tired of waiting for it to get done.  Could this be caused by the fact that I have 5gb of photos on the iPad ?

My  iPad has been syncing for 18 hours / back up process since I tried to work with the iCloud.  Some items ie., contacts are synced to my new iPhone 4si and also books from the app store and also kindle stuff is okay.  No photos yet.  iPad has 5 gb of photos on it.  What happens if I stop the back up/sync process before it completes? Does it mess up my iPad??? Thanks

If it won't start by conventional means and the battery is charged take it back.

I called verizon suspended my service and they said if the person tried to sell it back, or put their number on it, it will get flagged. I was just wondering if i should reinstate my service and try and wait for it to turn back on and then go get it because you need internet for it to track and with the suspended service, it can only track if connected to wifi, but they wont get past my password.

  • My iPod has been backing up for an hour

My iTunes has been acting up a lot lately, and not letting my iPod connect. Now that it's conecting the backing up process has taken an hour, and it isn't done yet. It's been on step 2 of 7 for an hour now and I don't know how to speed it up, or what to do about it. It's never taken this long before, and I haven't dowloaded a bunch of new apps, and I haven't downloaded any new songs, since the last time it was backed up. Any help?

It shouldn't take this long.  Stop the sync.
    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes, Sync and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • HT5429 I have recently returned from a holiday in New Zealand and transited for 6 hours in China. Since returning to the UK my maps app on Iphone 5 will not show my surroundings in hybrid or satellite. How can i get this back?

I have recently returned from a holiday in New Zealand and transited for 6 hours in China. Since returning to the UK my maps app on Iphone 5 will not show my surroundings in hybrid or satellite. I have also noticed that the data from section that usually displays data from TOM TOM and others now just says others. Has anyone encountered this before or know how to get the Satellite function on maps back?

Your phone is "stuck" in the Chinese version of maps. This also happened to me once I got back from China recently. I believe I solved the problem by logging out of iCloud and reloging in.
BTW the App Store app was also stuck in China. It only displayed Chinese characters and I had to log out and relogin.
    Hope this helps.

  • "iTunes backing up iPad" for 6 hours. Nothing telling about when will finish.

    Hi
I'm an iPad 2 user with iTunes 10.5 Windows and when I want to update my iDevice, iTunes says backing up...  I'm npt at home for 6 hours but still saying backing up.

I USED to be able to get a playlist or two, I had gotten 5 GB of music back on it by putting 1-2 playlists on, ejecting, plugging back in, rinse, repeat. Now iTunes locked up AGAIN, checked the iPod, NO MUSIC. Really glad I bought this ******* piece of **** two years ago! Totally worth my money!
Now, on top of all this, I find this in the help section.
    Symptoms
You may notice the following symptoms on your Windows PC after installing the iCloud Control Panel, iTunes 10.5 or later, or Safari 5.1 or later:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
    iTunes is slow to respond.
    Windows is slow to respond.
iTunes stops responding when backing up or syncing with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Oh, so you mean that since you guys released 10.5, (and its now up to 10.6.??) people have had this issue of their iTunes not responding? What the ****. So basically since 10.5 people have had their iTunes not working correctly? Fix this crap.
I already did the LSP check thing, only one besides the apple one are two windows ones that are up to date and should be there. There is no other help to be had. What a joke.

  • My iPhone 4 died and won't turn back on. It's been on the charger for 17 hours.

Last night my phone went completely dead while I was doing something for school. I put it on the charger as soon as I got into the car, maybe 30 minutes after it went dead. It's been charging for 17 hours and still shows an empty battery with a flash underneath.
I've tried everything. I've attempted a hard reset multiple times, the screen goes black for maybe two seconds and then the empty battery comes back. Tried restarting my computer while my phone was plugged into it. Tried pressing the home button while plugging it into my computer. My computer isn't recognizing it when I plug the phone in.
I am desperate. I don't have the money to buy a new phone. Please help.
It hasn't been dropped. No water damage. I've never broken an iPhone before.

Your only chance is connecting in recovery mode, as explained in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
iTunes has to tell you that it found an iPhone in recovery mode, otherwise you can't be sure that you put it into recovery mode.
