Individual HDD options?

Is there any way I can manage the way my system shuts down hard drives on an individual basis? I have several external firewire hard drives that I would like to be spun down at certain times of the day. Is there any way I could spin down these drives at a designated time? Does anyone out there know of any software that would allow me to do this?
MacBook, 2.0 GHz ICD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 GB of DDR2

If unmounting an external HD's mounted volume, spins it down, then you could write an Applescript to do that with calls to the Terminal command diskutil. Details are left as an exercise.

  • Best Firewire 800 HDD Options for mid-2010 iMac?

    Hi all,
I've run out of space on my internal HDD and I understand that upgrading the internal HDD is rather difficult.  I started looking around at external HDD's and it appears that both WD and Seagate have rolled off support in their mainline products for Firewire 800.  You can still get a previous model WD Studio that has Firewire 800, but it is almost twice the price of the latest model.  What are my best options for an external hard drive?  Any recommendations?

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/Final Cut user, both have their own  individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

  • Network HDD Options

Hi I am hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I have purchased an AE all up and running. I have my printer wich is not wireless, attached to the AE via usb works fine. What i am looking for is an easy way to connect cheaper external HDD to the AE. The primary reason for the external HDD is to move my apeture photo library and itunes library off my MBP. The only external HDD with ethernet connections (printer is using the usb port on the AE) seem to be expensive NAS options. Will AE recognise a HDD if it is attached to a usb adapter?? or ethernet to usb/thunderbolt/firewire adapter???? Or is there a simple solution and im just missing it.
    Thanks
    Nat

I can advice you buy any cheap USB hub (you can see my hub on the picture bellow). So then you connect 2 or more devices to your AE.

  • Best External HDD Option

I am looking for some advice on the best external setup, speed, and capacity wise, its also important to keep in mind this is for a portable setup so I do need to be able to carry it around with me.
As far as I know the best option would be for me to buy a large capacity 10,000 RPM SATA HDD, and then purchase an Express32 Card that supports eSATA.
    Is this a viable option?
I have heard that eSATA is the fastest option for data transfer, because I could always get an external enclosure that supports FireWire 800...
But as far as I know, FireWire and SATA arn't compatable, so I would have to buy a IDE hard drive, and then I'm not sure that you can even get 10,000 RPM IDE drives.
    oh, the drama!
I really have my heart set on a 10,000RPM Drive.
Any advice would be most appreciated!!
    -Chris

    I would go for a 750GB ATA HD @ 7,200 rpm with a
    firewire 800 enclosure.
As far as I know the is a compatability issue between
the SATA and Firewire Technologies.. Which basically
means you cannot get an enclosure that is firewire,
    and supports SATA drives.
Mac Sales have them. I have a 2.5" 100GB SATA 7200RPM drive I've been thinking of putting in a FireWire external enclosure of theirs.

  • Where's the Delete from HDD option?

iTunes used to ask if I wanted to delete the files from my HDD when deleting from iTunes but it doesn't do that anymore and I don't even see the options in preferences anymore. Has this feature been removed or am I missing something?
    TIA

Is all your music in the default iTunes folder? If it isn't, iTunes will only delete the entry from the database but won't touch the original file. Also, be sure your deleting from the library, not from a playlist.
If the problem is you're simply not getting the warning box anymore, that can be fixed by deleting the prefs file for iTunes (com.apple.itunes.plist which you'll find in the ~/Library/Preferences folder).

  • Whats the speed of the 100GB Hdd Option upgrade

    Hello
Im looking getting a second mini & passing my one onto a pest "family member". The apple site had the option of a 100G hdd. What would the speed of this drive be.

"If the system were being used for video (as an example) then rotational speed of the drive is barely relevent to system performance as long as the drive is capable of sustaining the necessary data stream (a 4200rpm drive can typically manage 30fps DV)."
Maybe in iMovie, but ask any FCP user, and they will say 7200 makes all the difference in the world. I have only a 700 MHz processor, and that has nothing to do with whether or not I can capture and output video. However, if my drive has a bump in it, all **** breaks loose. The only time I ever wish for a faster processor is when I start a render... and then I go to bed.
But try scrubbing video on a 4200 RPM drive. Then try a 5400, then a 7200, the a couple of 7200s in a RAID. Then three, then four, then five...
Rotation speed makes a HUGE difference in video. Most of my time is spent editing, scrubbing, audio scanning and doing things that really work the drives. Bay 3 at work feels a heck of a lot slower to me than Bay 1 or 2. Bay 3 has two 7200 RPM drives in a RAID, and Bays 1 and 2 each have a set of 5 drives in a RAID. Yet Bay 3 has the fastest processor in our building.

  • Performance guidelines for individual HDD/SSDs?

I really appreciate all the great computer building and system guideline information here in the hardware forum, but I've not found a thread which explains desirable individual hard drive and SSD performance characteristics, and how they pertain to video editing needs.
For example, people seem to talk mostly about sequential read/write performance...but is that the only data we really need to consider when shopping for drives? CrystalDiskMark tests sequential, 512K, 4K, and 4KQD32. Does stellar 4k performance matter? If a drive manufacturer breathlessly proclaims 50,000 IOPS performance, what's that going to do for me?  In short, it would be great to know which benchmarks are useful for us, and why.
It would also be helpful to understand optimal task assignment based on performance information. I thought I had read one should use the fastest individual drive for previews...or was it for scratch disc? And I assumed the recommendation pertained to drives other than C:, but I hate to assume. And what type of "fastest" are we talking about?
Note: I asked this question in the generic disk setup guidelines thread and was advised to start a new thread for it.

These are all valid questions, but OTOH it may be you are oversearching in your quest for information. However to start with a site that delivers or better said, that used to deliver very valuable information about all kinds of disks, look here: http://www.storagereview.com/
Lately their performance database seems to be rather out of date and very few new entries in the last year or so, but still very informative.
The much touted IOPS for some SSD's are irrelevant for video editors. They are mainly useful if you have high transaction websites that need to access high volumes of very small files. Examples are news sites, webshops, etc.
What is relevant for video editors? Generally it is about storing and accessing large files, even when one shoots short clips in the range of 3 or 4 seconds, but especially if one shoots longer clips, say interviews, wildlife, sceneries, live performances, etc. So for video editors sequential transfer rates are far more important than IOPS.
Once the clips are ingested, they need to be easily accessible for sequential reading, but to add to that are the much smaller indexed, conformed and peak files that are stored in the media cache with pointer files in the media cache database and for these files random access times are more important than sequential transfer rates.
However, people tend to forget that even more important than benchmark scores in various tests, fill rates can completely undo any advantage of a marginally faster disk. A disk that shows better benchmark performance than any other disk will in practice be slower than many other disks if its fill rate increases more than other disks. Say you have a disk that is a top performer with a capacity of 750 GB and you have a mediocre performing disk with a capacity of 2000 GB. In practice when you have 400+ GB stored on both disks, the smaller one is already showing performance degradation and the larger one is still going strong.
The best way to improve performance on an editing rig is to increase the number of disks, to lower the fill rates and to expand raids to more disks. Expanding raids (notice the R, so I do not suggest this for aid0 because of the lack of redundancy) means that the performance of the raid controller will get more impact on the system and may be of bigger importance than the choice of the hard disk.
If I were to build a new system today, I would have a serious look at the Hitachi 7K3000 series of disks, for instance the 2 or 3 TB models. Price/GB is very attractive, around € 0.045 per GB, performance is great and their reliability is reputed to be great and no longer deserve the 'Deathstar' name. With those disk sizes, you will keep fill rates low and not suffer performance degradation, even with large amounts of data stored. Imagine a 16 disk raid30/50 with two hot-spares and a net storage capacity of 24 TB (using 2 TB models) or 36 TB (using 3 TB models) and you will be hard pressed to fill that to notice any performance degradation and you will easily have a sustained transfer rate of more than 1000 MB/s if you have a good controller.

  • Time machine backup of individual hdd?

Can I do a backup from Time Machine of only a certain hdd?
My system, 10.10.3, has an OS drive and a data drive where I keep my photo and docs. The data drive went bad and I'll be purchasing a new one.
I see instructions for recovering a whole system but I don't need that. I just need to place, from Time Machine, the contents of my now defunct data hdd.
    How do I do that?
    Thanks!!

Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.

  • Which HP notebook comes with a dual-HDD option and USB 3.0

the question is simple and I wonder why HP does not give a filtering mechanism on their webpages. I want a notebook that has an empty bay for a 2nd hard-disk and also includes a USB3.0 port. Do I need to go for a 17"option? Does it have to be a dv series (bad experiences in the past, cover replaced battery broken after a year and overheating issues)? It needs to create movies, and don't tell me I need to buy a Macbook instead....

USB3.0 is a pretty new technology and I have noticed that the new chipset Cougar Point supports it (Sandy Bridge laptops). You can also add an express card at any time to have bth 3.0 in a laptop..

There won't be many non 17" laptops with 2 hard drive bay so eSATA might be a possible solution..

  • Photostream individual delete option missing?

If this feature really is missing this not only very bad. It is probably illegal, as it pulls away my power of control over my photographs on the servers. Apple, please - what's going on here? This is just a bug, isn't it?

  • Tgere must b option to set password on individual app optional...

Activation LockWith iOS 7 or later, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is turned on automatically when you set up Find My iPhone.  Activation Lock makes it harder for anyone to use or sell your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it’s ever lost or stolen. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password are required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
Sign out of iCloud on your device
    Erase and reactivate your device
Important: Make sure to remember your Apple ID and password, and that your password is unique and secure—someone else shouldn’t be able to guess it.  For more information, see the Apple Support article Security and your Apple ID.
Before giving away or selling your device, be sure to erase your content and settings (go to Settings > General > Reset). When you erase your content, Find My iPhone and Activation Lock are also turned off. If you no longer have the device, follow the instructions to remove a device you no longer have.

    Hi,
    Halt your machine.
    Boot with fail-safe mode.
format and list out the disks. (You can get the root & mirror disk (c#t#d#) details from /etc/lvm/md.tab of your root or mirror disk. Earlier explorer output may help)
Mount the root disk and remove the password entry in /etc/shadow
    umount it.
Mount the mirror disk and remove the password entry in /etc/shadow
    umount it.
    reboot the server.
    Hope this helps!

  • Cannot select multiple airplay options

I itunes I can see and send audio to any individual airplay option ( I have 3 including the imac) , however when I choose to send to multiple, I only get the option of one airplay device & my computer, the other airplay device does not appear in the list to tick for multiple airplay devices.
I can see and play to them all using airfoil though, so I am stumped.
    Any ideas guys?
i have rebooted to no avail.

I don't know if you resolved this yet... but I had the same problem. Eventually I realized that you have to TAB - SPACE BAR on the quiz slides. With the drop downs for filling in the blanks, it is TAB to, SPACE BAR, UP DOWN ARROW KEYS, ENTER. I am having to put instructions on the slide. Also, I'm having a nightmare with the tabbing on quiz slides, because for some reason it tabs on EVERYTHING on the slide, not just the interactive options. It even tabs the slide itself. I can't fix it... I've tried everything. I have it all perfect on everything but the quiz slides, then it loses focus. Also, for the fill in the blank quiz slides, it tabs to the selections all over the place. First it goes to question 1, then 6 then 3, then 2... and so on. As these don't show up in the tabable order feature, I can't fix that either.
Sorry I just probably made it worse for you... but if you know of a fix for these other tabbing issues with quiz slides, please let me know.

  • Mobo Support for booting from USB hdd

    Hi,
    I have a K8N Diamond.
How can I check whether my mobo can support booting from USB hdd?

  • Re: Satellite L350-16U - How to recover HDD password?

I forget my massword of HDD and I can't restart my system.
How can I recover my password HDD in my notebook L350-16U?
    Thanks

    hi foued,
    hi all,
i'll try to bring some light in this discussion....
    first of all
? what is hdd password and how it works:
the password is stored on the hdd and crypts the content to protect it from unauthorized access.
lost password means: all data lost!
but there is hope: some data recovery companies maybe are able to reset this password, search for "kroll ontrack"
?new hdd required: no - only if you dont need your data,
there is an option to initialize your hdd (option in bios) *but* you will loose all data!
how it works?:the bios calls a routine in the hdd controller that formats the hdd, after that you have a blank hdd - data cant be recovered from this point!
but you got the hdd in a fresh state!
there are some "cool" scripts/methods/tools around in the internet... i wouldnt try this....
this leads you to an unusable hdd and you will not be able to recover...
sorry but the only way to get your data back is to send some money or
forget your data and install the system again after unlocking the hdd (delete whole disk data by controller)...
this is a cool security hardware stuff - no way to break!
