INDS CS3 - equivalent to PS "rotate canvas"?

Hi everybody,
I am pretty new to InDesign and I suspect this is a boneheaded question, but I would really appreciate your help ...
Is there an InDesign command equivalent to the Photoshop "rotate canvas" feature? I am making the layout for a cardboard "digipak" CD case. The construction works like a homemade Christmas card, basically: fold a square in half then fold that in half again. Thus, I need the top/bottom halves of my layout to be oriented 180° against each other (bottom half right side up, top half upside down, as it were).
Having now placed all the graphics to my satisfaction and done the texts of the bottom half, I am desperately searching for a way to rotate my layout 180° so I can work on it comfortably without turning my monitor upside down! The layout is full of a complex set of fold, cut and bleed guides, so I am hoping for an 'in document' solution rather than building another page, flipping it and importing it ...
Thanks in advance for your time!
- HC

So ... thank for the tip.
I did as you suggested though I am not entirely certain that it worked yet. I imported the new document I made and rotated it into place on my template, but it looks rough as all get out (like the rough graphics placeholders in the workspace do) - this includes the writing: not all vector-perfect, ugly and non-editable. Perhaps I imported it incorrectly?
This work-around still bothers me for a couple of reasons:
- Photoshop has had a "rotate canvas" feature for year and years so why doesn't InDesign offer that, too?
- My eye can't handle setting balance and layout upside down even if I find the command to turn the writing over (I presume that isn't so tricky)
- I also have to place a spine text at 90° to the other text and might want to add text on the back cover also at 90° to the rest.
I would be thrilled to hear some analysis of my importing problem and any other possibilities you see for me!
Cheers,
- HC

  • IND CS3 and Acrobat 9 Pro

I am working in IND CS3 version 5.0.4 and Acrobat 9 Pro version 9.0.0
Computer: Windows XP Pro, Ver.2002, SP 3
    Dell Optiplex GX 620, Pent. D 3GHZ, 3.50GB RAM
    Question:
I am new to the PC environment and have noticed that everytime I double-click an IND CS3 document to open it my computer freezes and then opens it in Acrobat 9 Pro as a PDF. Also noticed that I can't drag a PDF to the shortcut on desktop for Acrobat to open PDFs.
Anyone know why these things happen?
    Thanks for any help.

Check your file associations - they are in two places. Windows Folders and in Bridge. In Windows go to Control Panel. Find Folder Options. Go to File Type. Find indd and make sure it defaults to Indesign.exe. With PDF find Acrobat*.exe

  • Hiding IND CS3 with Leopard 10.5.4 (still disappearing when hidden)

    Hello all...
I updated Leopard to 10.5.4 as I was told it would resolve the "disappearing act" IND CS3 does when you hide the program and then come back to it... It seemed all good for the last couple of days until I just noticed the disappearing act again just now. I'd try and bring the program to the foreground, the icon says it's there, Apple+Tab says it's there and the first program opened, but I don't see anything, despite hitting the tab key (to toggle tool boxes & palettes) or launching documents outside of the program's Open command...
    anyone else?

Oh yes, happens to me too - I'm pretty sure this is Apple related as a lot of other people have had the same thing happen with other apps. I sometimes get the same thing happening with Bryce.
In my extremely-non-expert-but-completely-by-educated-guesswork opinion, it's something to do with memory.

  • Conversion problem from PM7 Win to InD CS3

My client sent 400 CAD images to a design company in India to have them converted into PM7 sheets to for printed here in the US!!!!
I just received the PM files-I do have a copy of PM 7 on an XP Win PC.
The printer also happens to have PM7 but is having difficulty converting the files to .PDF for printing.  My solution, I think, is to open the .PMD (PM7) on my Mac using InD CS3, making page order changes, and converting to .PDF for printing.  Seems there is distortion when I open in CS3.  I understand there is a FREE Plug-in for Pagemaker 7 that is available.  I have never configured a Plug in-only used native ones.  Can anyone advise or does anyone have another fix?
    Many thanks
    Gail B

OH YEAH!  IDIOTIC from my point of view.
They brought the files into PM& (because this is what they have and
this company does not want to spend $ on upgrading-which if fine if
they were only working in house-a manufacturer) that's why they sent
it India-thought they could save $  NOT!  I could have done it right
in the first place.)  They needed borders and text and logos etc place
on the final pages.  The India firm mis-placed certain pages-this is a
double side print and they neglected to take into consideration that T
of C and others are single sided print- and so on.   So do you think I
have to stay in PM7 .  I thought the reason the distortion was
happening was because they DID NOT embed the CAD images.
Thanks for any help on this lovely Sunday morning in NJ

  • InD CS3 on i7 MacBook Pro?

I'm transitioning from a Core Duo MacBook to this newer i7 processor and need to install InD CS3.
Apparently I must deactivate it on the old Mac before I can install it on the new one.  This is making me really uncomfortable because I'm not certain it will work.
I do have Rosetta, am running Snow Leopard.  Do have an activated license for InD CS3.
Is this really going to be OK?  What do I do if it isn't and then I can't activate it back on the old computer?
adobe support refuses to grant me any time to make sure it will be OK before I deactivate on the old Mac.  Already spent 45 minutes on the phone with them the other day.
Need reassurance and a heads up for any possible problems I might encounter.
    Thanks.

It might be possible that your Snow Leopard running under Rosetta ID CS3 is the problem.
You could try calling support again. Demand to escalate the call to a supervisor or manager, because of previous unsatisfactory assistance on this issue. If you have a case number, that will help move things along. If not, get a case number before demanding escalation. Give the case number to the supervisor, so they can review the issue. The core of the issue is "Is ID CS3 supported on Snow Leopard?" If "yes," the follow-up is "What i Snow Leopard is frunning under Rosetta that's running under my new computer's current operating system, which is <name of the OS>?"
It helps to always get the agent's name, as well as a case number. It also helps to say, "I don't mean to be rude, but I don't want to waste your time or mine. I don't think you have been trained to handle this problem, so please escalate me to someone who does have the proper training and experience. Thanks."
If the first manager can't or won't help, demand escalation to that person's manager, and repeat the escalation until you get a definitive result.
You can also try searching Google with terms like "InDesign CS3 rosetta <what operating system rosetta is running under>"

  • Rotate canvis unintuitive, hot key limitations, new adjustment layer features? Brush size slider bad

I've been using photoshop for a while, as well as a number of 3D  applications. Speed and efficiency have always been very important, and I  usually customize my software a lot to make it work for me. These are  some of the things photoshop could do better in comparison to the user  interfaces in some 3D programs.
    Rotate canvas unintuitive:
While having a center pivot seems more intuitive at first, it actually  causes me nothing but trouble having to always figure out where the  center is, and then deciding how close i am (which will change speed of  rotation). I would like at least an option to simply drag left and drag  right for clockwise and counterclockwise at a specific speed.
    Hot Key Limitations:
alt R and control R and shift R cannot be assigned to different things. I would prefer it if i could customize all of these.
    new adjustment layer features:
often when painting in photoshop, i create an adjustment layer over all  the layers. If i like how it looks, and want to continue painting, i  have to either turn it off while i work and switch it on at the end  again, flatten the entire painting loosing the layer separations, or  duplicate the adjustment layer and setting it next to each pre-existing  layer and then merging each set of 2 layers(the original + the  duplicated adjustment layer).
It would be really wonderful if the process of duplicating the  adjustment layers and flattening each set of 2 could be automated. a  sort of Flatten to all individually button.
    Brush Size Slider:
Zbrush has a very wonderful brush size change. I never appreciated it  until trying photoshops. (previously to this i used another piece of  hardware with a scroll wheel to change brush size. and still do. why the  heck is the first brush size jump 10 units!?! simply a linear brush  size change would have been awesome. although including a brush size  slider is already pretty awesome
These things have been bothering me for a long time, and i always assume  these problems that are obvious to me are probably obvious to everybody  else and therefore will be fixed without my small intervention, but i  figure this cant hurt. Thanks for all the hard work and the wonderful  product!

This is a poorly explained reason about why is so important having a loupe in Photoshop. I've not also, used the best example, but I will. This belongs to the ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Loupe/Magnificator View:. Also, I will try to make my english clrearer, but here it goes:

  • File spooling but not printing - InD CS3

I am at a loss as to why InD CS3 (and Acrobat and Reader) will not print to a shared printer. Illustrator CS3 and Photoshop CS3 will print to this shared printer. Why not InD CS3? This has been ongoing since CS3 came out.
The file spools, all images and fonts are downloaded but the file never appears in the print queue. Not on the originating machine or the sharing machine. It just vanishes.
CS3 Pro versions Loaded on Mac G5 dual 2gig (non-intel) running Tiger. Three other machines have the same issue. All various machine configs (G4 single/Tiger, G5 dual 1.8/Tiger, and an Intel iMac/Leopard).
    - Printer is shared through a networked G3 running Jaguar (yeah, yeah, working on it).
    - The printer is an Epson SP1400
    - All drivers updated on all machines.
    - All CS3 patches done.
    - Permissions done.
    - OnyX system maintenance done.
    - Preferences trashed. Machines restarted (printer and macs).
    - The InD CS3 file can be printed from CS3 to a networked Panasonic postscript printer. So it's not the file.
    - The InD file can be saved down using Interchange to CS2 and that will print to the shared printer.
    - The InD CS3 file will print to this printer if the printer is connected directly to the machine it is printing from.
Apple and Epson have pointed out that because other CS3 apps do print to the printer, there is something going on with InD, Acrobat and Reader and the sharing function. Is it the G3 and Jag? Or something to do with CUPS or .local or a sharing protocol? Please help me out with this.

Anything interesting in the logs on the printing machine or the sharing machine?
In the Print button in the Adobe Print dialog, click the popup to Error Handling and tell it to cough up an error page if it fails to print. Maybe the printer will give you feedback about why it's failing then.
If that does nothing, then what if you print the file to postscript and drop the PS file onto the printer icon in the Dock? That would at least guarantee you were getting a file and let you experiment with why it isn't making it all the way through the process.
A final thought is to raster it completely [make a Transparency Flattener set to 100% raster @ whatever DPI] and see if just a bitmap will print correctly. That tells you if it's something weird with the postscript at least.
It's all guesses, really. But at least it might give you something new to play with... Best of luck!

  • InD CS3 Won't Quit

Am unable to quit InD CS3 without force-quitting. Repaired permissions, etc. Dumped prefs too.
Running 10.5.2 on new Mac Pro 3.2 twin quad cores; 16 gig ram.

Did the s+c+o_c thing... it quits now but takes about a minute of pizza-wheel spinning to fully shut down.
Also tried quitting from "new user" account; same thing; pizza wheel spinning, then shutting down after about a minute or so.

  • Fluid rotate canvas

Hi, I'm trying PS CS4 for the first time. I was curious about the new fluid rotate canvas, I thought it would be very useful, but I had to change my mind very soon.
If I alt-click with the Clone Stamp Tool, then slightly rotate the canvas, and then clone, it will clone at the original angle, which is totally useless. The same behavior with not-round brushes.
    Am I missing something?

    > it will clone at the original angle, which is totally useless.
The idea of the rotate canvas feature is that you can continue to work in way you could not before and can align the brush in a way as not to have to rotate your wrist. I find it saves me a lot of time.
You will find that it does as well. Also keep in mind with this you also get a preview of the stamps source so this will also save a lot of time as well.
"Totally useless" I would say you misunderstand what the tool does, however what you suggest is not a bad feature request. The option to also rotate the brush and the canvas but maintain the sources orientation to the image.
Keep in mind someone will come along and say well I also want to be able for the source to rotate as well and then someone will come along with some other request.
But totally useless is extreme and not at all true. you might wan to try the trial for a while and you will realize hey, this really is great even if the brush does not rotate.
I think you mean it was not what I you expected. Because I can tell you from my experience it is a time saver and sometimes a life saver and it is a great improvement to the physical demands on my hands.
I do a lot of complex retouching it cuts the time down by more then half. So it is quite useful.

  • InD CS3, Mac OS 10.5.6, getting old bug

    Hey folks --
Over the last week I've been getting InDesign crashes (once or twicer daily) with the message "The network connection was lost for the file [filename] or the file was modified by another process." I suspect that it's occurring during autosaves, because there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it.
The network connection is NOT being lost.
I've seen this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/323292 and it appears to have been an issue that was apparently solved in the past.
Our "server" is a ReadyNAS Duo using a drive formatted as EXT3, shared over AFP.
I realize this doesn't appear to be a common occurrance for any others out there, but... anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you all. Unfortunately, I AM our IT department.
I was sort of press-ganged into it. <rolleyes>
So, that answers some of the questions raised -- next, I know the connection's not being dropped because nothing else is raising holy heck about it (typically, in my experience, the finder is the first to yell).
Next, I have decent evidence that it isn't the network generally that's to blame -- three other users, no issues (all running CS3 -- albeit on different machines). I have to suspect that it's some combination of 10.5.6, the brand-new Intel Xeon desktop (mine), our network, and CS3.
Most likely, it may not even be an issue in CS4 -- unfortunately, I can't upgrade because as a design & advertising studio, we all need to be on the same version.
Sandee, I realize that there's no "autosave" per se, but surely InD must do some kind of magic behind the scenes, otherwise it wouldn't be able to restore files after a crash, correct?
Lastly, I just have to ask because it stuns me... What's the point of having a server if you don't work with the files on it? I'm supposed to copy the file onto my hard drive, work on it, and then copy it back when I'm done? What kind of efficiency is that? Really, I'm just curious -- if slightly incredulous.
(also, I'm going to leave this question open because who knows, maybe someone else will come along -- thanks again tho)

  • Photoshop CS3 will not auto-rotate images...

After loading CS3 on my new MacBook Pro (3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo), Photoshop does not auto rotate images?
The finder rotates them...Bridge rotates them...Expression Media2 rotates them.....Photoshop does not
Obviously the camera, Nikon D2x, is set to tag vertical images for rotation. What gives? I can't find any sort of setting in PS for auto rotate.
It worked on my old laptop and on an old EMac.

Thanks! I appreciated the help. But I did that also.
It is a waste of my time to have to do this after every photo shoot. Photoshop and many other programs do this automatically. There has to be a reason for it not working on my new laptop. I even uninstalled and reinstalled CS3.
I was hoping for a solution not a work around....I guess I need to contact the Adobe support team. Do they frequent these forums or is it just us?

  • Word 2003 to InD CS3

I've seen a few posts regarding Word styles not coming in quite right to InD. I'm not seeing quite the wacky things some people are seeing but there is one thing that keeps coming up.
When imported the main text style has a paragraph override of no tab stops. Even though in Word they clearly have the tab stops that match the Word style. In fact the tabs are set the same in Word and InDesign as the Word template is designed to mimic the setting in InDesign.
I've tried reapplying the style in Word to ensure that the paragraph is exactally like the style, but nothing I do seems to fix it. I've also tried saving as RTF, but get the same result.
Until now we've had extensive macros that run on the Word files and create InDesign tagged text files. This ensure that nothing "stray" will come in from Word but were hoping to avoid all that crunching and code writing when coming from the new Word template.
Any idea why just the tabs are coming in as overridden?
    Many thanks,
    Ken

Been banging this around a bit and think I found a decent solution.
The scenario is that we have Word files that have the same style name as our InDesign file, but we were getting overrides coming in from Word even though the styles in the two programs were nearly identical. We are currently still in CS3 with this particular series but CS5 had similar issues. I think at least part of the problem are the so called "default" tabs in the Word doc.
In InDesign, instead of telling the Word import filter to use the InDesign styles we told it to automatically rename. This puts "_wrd_#" at the end of the incoming style name where the "#" increments as a number. If you then delete those incoming styles and equate them to the corresponding InDesign style it works fantabulously. It keeps the overrides that were done in Word without any extra overrides on the other paragraphs.
Hoping this might help someone else.
    All the Best,
    Ken

  • CS3 equivalent to PSE?

What program or programs in CS3 would be the equivalent to PSE?
Specifically, what CS3 program(s) would I use to create slideshows like PSE can do - with pan/zoom and transitions, etc? Also, which CS3 app does the picture tagging and organizing like PSE?
Any reason I would need PSE if I purchase CS3 Master Collection?
    Thanks
    Kevin

    > What program or programs in CS3 would be the equivalent to PSE?
    >
PSE has an image editor and Organizer. CS3 has an image editor and Bridge.
The two image editors are similar but the CS3 editor is the Pro version and
has significantly greater functionality. Organizer and Bridge are similar
but not equivalent. Bridge doesn't have the consumer level "creations" that
Organizer provides, for example. FYI, PSE 5 for Mac uses a trimmed down
version of Bridge instead of Organizer (which never was available for Mac).
    > Specifically, what CS3 program(s) would I use to create slideshows like
    > PSE can do - with pan/zoom and transitions, etc? Also, which CS3 app does
    > the picture tagging and organizing like PSE?
    >
You do tagging and filtering with Bridge. If you wish to migrate to Bridge
from Organizer you can embed your Organizer tags in the image file metadata
and Bridge will be able to use them. But don't expect the exact same
functionality. Bridge, by the way, has scripting and far superior batch
capability if that's important to you.
CS3 can create a PDF slideshow. And, Bridge has a slideshow for viewing
within Bridge but does not produce a slide show file. If you're expecting a
PSE type slideshow, you're going to be disapointed. PSE is intended to work
with Premiere Elements to produce the full range of Slideshow/DVD
presentations. If you purchase the Master Collection or the Creative Suite
Production Studio, you will get Premiere and you can use that to create
decent slide shows. But that's a very expensive way to go. Frankly, if
slideshows are a big concern, you may be better off with the inexpensive
    "ProShow Gold" product (http://www.photodex.com/).
    > Any reason I would need PSE if I purchase CS3 Master Collection?
    >
It comes down to how much do you want the PSE Creations and Organizer.
Frankly, you probably don't need PSE if you just get the Photoshop CS3 stand
alone product. Let alone one of the Creative Suites. Do you really need
    the Master Collection?
The Master Collection does not include all of Adobe's products. It's pro
oriented and doesn't contain the consumer products. And, also omits
    Lightroom and some other products.

  • Reinstalling InD CS3 (Mac)

Are there any tricks to reinstalling CS3 InD? Reason I ask is that I've a number of CS3-created InDesign files that CS4 refuses to open... just quit/crashes. I've tried several timez to reinstall CS3 InD but repeatedly fail under both SL & 10.5.8. I can only get Bridge & Acrobat CS3 to reinstall... all other components fail.
I've got good CDs of both CS3 and CS4 Design Standard.
Any clues? Is there any link to where I might be able to download the Adobe CS3 demo so that I can install off of this and then access the CS3 files?
    Thanks.

I am also no authority on this but have heard and experienced it frequently enough.
On the other hand, in comparison to Windows it is a no-brainer to take any el-cheapo external disk, install a pure OSX ( no genuine activation hassles ) and continue with the CS3 installer disk. It should give you a demo license for the next 30 days unless you decide to activate.

  • Rotate Canvas

I accidentally shot a short clip vertically.
When I import the shot into Final Cut, it shows the canvas going vertical. You'd have to turn your monitor on its side to be able to view the video properly.
When I go into the motion tab and try to rotate the shot so that it appears horizontally, the canvas still remains horizontal.
Is there any way to change the orientation of the canvas?
    Cheers!

The Canvas aspect is defined by its frame size (pixel width by pixel height, also bearing in mind pixel aspect ratio) ... if you want a "portrait" style frame then you'll need to change the frame size accordingly in the Sequence Settings. Keep in mind how your viewers will see the finished piece tho, if its going to be seen on TV then you'll want to stick to a standard frame aspect and rotate/resize/reframe the content instead.
    Hope it helps
