INeedhelp - frozen iPod

I've read through all the similar posts and Support articles that I could find, however, none have addressed my issue directly.
I plugged my iPod color into my machine via USB (as normal) to sync a few new songs from iTunes. while in iTunes I accepted the update to newer version, 7 I believe. After downloading the new version my iPod was no longer recognized by iTunes or my computer.
The iPod displayed a few images... the first (all black & white) image was that of the iPod-to-power adapter that shows it being plugged in directly to the wall. My iPod was near full battery when I had it plugged in before the update. I read an article about resetting the iPod by flipping the Hold button then holding select and menu buttons until Apple icon appears. I did this, I got the Apple icon then it gave me the battery icon with the lightning bolt and just rotates the 2 images every time I try to reset it via menu & select buttons.
I have current Windows updates.
I reset my machine, iTunes and iPod in various combinations.
Nothing I do will get my machine to recognize the iPod or get my iPod working again.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I have a flight in 9 hours... hope I can resolve this issue before then.
Thanks in advance,
-Chip Masterson

You need to connect your iPod with an ac charger to complete the Restore process.
Buy one or borrow from friend, or if you have one of the following and have a charge with those
1. iPod car charger
2. iPod speaker dock system e.g. Bose Sounddock iPod HiFi or JBL Soundstage

  • Possible Solution to Frozen iPod, iTunes not responding and sad folder

There may be hope for frozen iPods, unresponsive iTunes and sad folders. This solution is totally anecdotal at this point as it only has worked on my iPod. However, try it you got nothing to lose. Our iPods broken right? It's a $300 paper weight right?
    History
My iPod 4G 20GB started skipping songs then rebooted and gave me the sad folder. I reset and everything went downhill from there. I would:
    - not be recognized in My Computer
-when I did get a drive on My Computer it would lock up My Computer
-reboot and either give me sad folder or Menu with no songs
    -refuse to be updated
-be seen in Device Manager as ipod both with Firewire and USB connections
I read through the many threads here and tried all Apple's Solutions to no avail. I even called and they told me, very nicely and free of charge, that I would have to send it in and because the repair price was such to "look at the new models to see which one I wold like". I was totally bummed. I went and bought an new Nano 4GB (with warranty this time) swearing I would never buy another with a HDD again until they became more reliable. I even tried the smack it to get the disk head unstuck method. I figure my iPod was a paper weight at this point so what the ****.(Oddly this method works rather well with all sorts of broken electronics)
    Solution
Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.

My ipod only gets the sad logo and whenever I try to start it up I can hear the hard drive trying to start and then failing and it does so like 3 or 4 times. After I read your post I wanted to try that diagnostic thing but I can't get it into that mode. How long should I have to hold select and back? After I reset the ipod, it goes to the sad face, the hard drive seems to fail a few times and then the screen goes blank and stays like that for as long as I hold those buttons. I'm so sick and tired of dealing with a broken ipod but I really want to get this thing working again so I can never buy another Apple product again. Thanks.

  • Frozen Ipod/ Ipod keeps rebooting at black apple logo screen (on loop)

Frozen Ipod/ Ipod keeps rebooting at black apple logo screen (on loop)
-I've already replaced my old 60 GB Ipod in exchange for an 80GB, I bring it home, sync it up with Itunes v7.02 and everything works fine for a while. Not even 24 hours later I go down into my artist/song directory to play a song, and it freezes again. I do the menu center key soft reboot a few times to bypass it and it works for awhile. I've tried looking for current updates for software on it, Restoring it, Resyncing and now It gets to the point everytime I unplug the ipod from charging I get back to the menu and try to play a song or video and it does nothing, it freezes everytime.
There has to be an explanation as to why my first one did it and why my new 80GB is doing it.
I've already ran a diagnosis on all the files in the ipod all of them come back clean.
    Help me out.

My ipod is having a similar problem. The black apple logo has been the only thing I see on my ipod. I went a step farther and held the select and play/pause button to get it into disk mode. Once I am here I cannot proceed. I do not have computer that I hook it up to and have transferred the desired songs from an ex-girlfriends computer which I do not have access. What can I do once I have it in disk mode if I do not have a computer available?

  • How to fix a frozen ipod touch, it only shows the apple logo?

How do you fix  a frozen ipod touch, it only shows the apple logo?

    Hello,
I have same broken iPod Touch 4G, I'm stuck on the Apple logo and only what I can do is just restart. If I connect iPod turns on but that's all. I checked a lot of tricks how to restart/reboot device and how to get DFU but I have only the logo. iTunes on my mac can't recognize the device.
And in Apple retail store the guy told me: sorry it's dead. We can fix for about £200. After 1 month when my waranty is finished. Funny isn't it? I can't believe that my lovely iPod is dead after 13 months. Where is the "for quality you have to pay." Is it conspiracy if you don't buy extra waranty we will send you killing signal into your iDevice?
    Many thanks for help

  • Frozen ipod that is no longer recognized by computer

Help! My I-pod nano is frozen. It has been frozen before, so I did what Apple.com said to do. It is still frozen! So I decided to plug it in to the computer to charge .. and the I-pod is no longer recognized by my computer!
I've tried a million times to unfreeze it, doing what Apple said, but nothing is working! And why is Itunes not recognizing my I-pod?

    Hi caitt,
I don't know if "what Apple said to do" means that you tried the 5 R's, but that's a good start:
    The 5 R's
    From there, try this:
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows
    And this...
    iPod won't turn on
    Good luck,

  • How to get Windows 7 to see frozen iPod Nano

    Hi,
After installing Windows 7 on my PC, I installed and updated iTunes then tried to sync to my iPod Nano (5th generation).  I got an error code while doing this, which unfortunately I did not record but is probably irrelevant now anyway.  I then tried to restore the device.  This process also stopped with an error code and now my iPod is frozen.
If I apply power to it, I get a message flashing on every few seconds telling me to restore with iTunes, but the device is not even visible in iTunes.  It is not visible in Wndows Explorer either (not sure if it should be or not).  I have tried reinstalling iTunes with no effect.  If I hard reset the nano (toggle Hold then hold down centre and menu buttons), the following happens: I get a flash of the Apple logo on the nano and iTunes says 'iTunes must check the iPod software update server to identify this device'; I click 'Check'; iTunes says 'iTunes needs to prepare your iPod for recovery.  Please leave your iPod connected.'; I click 'Continue'; iTunes displays 'Preparing iPod for recovery'; this then disappears and nothing else happens on either the iPod or iTunes and the device does not appear.
I have even tried all of the above on a different PC with a fresh install of Windows XP, so it is hard to see how the fault can lie in Windows.  It really does seem that the initial crash while restoring the iPod has left it in a permanently-frozen state.
This was a wedding present and I can't afford to replace it because I am currently unable to work because of health reasons.  Which is a way of saying I am pretty desperate.  So if anyone can help with this, I really would be most grateful.
    Kind wishes, Patrick

    Thank you for the answer.
I tried resetting the iPod with no luck.  I tried reloading the system software from iTunes but this too froze.  I passed the unit on to a friend with a much more modern PC and - even after contacting Apple Technical Support - they could not get it working.  Apple said that the unit needed to be sent into them at a cost of ninety-odd quid.  Needless to say, I was not impressed.
I now have a Sony Walkman hooked up to Media Monkey and am much happier.  Okay, the unit is not quite so flashy, but I never used half the stuff on the nano anyway.  The Walkman has a solid, reliable feel about it, and was a lot cheaper than a new nano.
    Kind wishes, Patrick

  • How to reset/restore frozen ipod touch?

My 3 week old Ipod is now frozen with a white screen and some vertical lines.  I've tried resetting it many times by holding the on/off button and home button at the same time for various lengths of time.  When I plug it into my PC to restore it, itunes doesn't even recognize it's plugged in.  Help?

That does not always works. Here is Apple's complete instructions:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

  • HT201406 i have a frozen ipod touch the screen has multicolored vertical lines and is non responsive any ideas?

i have an i pod touch which appears to be frozen it has multicoloured vertical lines on the screen and is non responsive has anyone had the same probs

    If that does not work:
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Frozen Ipod WITH Hold Button Enhanced

my ipod froze with the HOLD SETTING IN PLACE. basically, it froze as if the hold button was pushed to the left in place. No matter if I toggle to button, it remains frozen. any suggestions???

    problem solved!!!!!
I have tried everything but really everything with
the same problem. I went to Appel store in Germany
and they told me they have to send it to Appel and
    will charge me about 100 € ( $120): I did the
following an d in a second it stat to work.
I can't believe it. The Heather advice, noted by many
others worked for me! Felt carefully around the
silver back where it joins the white plastic front
and realized there was a miniscule shift in the
position from one side to the other. Barely
noticeable. Pushed hard on the silver back to put it
back in position and with a loud click, the hold
button moved a fraction of a millimeter and unlocked.
Thank you! Problem must have been caused by banging
the ipod accidently and displacing the back from the
front. Saved me lots of $$. It's really a piece of
    junk.
where did you press again?? where on the back?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try resetting your iPod using the steps listed here...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
It may take several attempts. That article also has tips if your iPod won't reset.
If you can't get it to reset after several attempts, then you may need to just disconnect the iPod and wait for the battery to drain.
