Inexpensive IP managed switch/hub/whatever ?

Hello,
We have some very small unmanned remote sites with control type equipment, and they currently have unmanaged hubs for the site 'network'. We have occasionally had problems and wished for a hub or switch that has some management capabilities, minimally to reply to echo requests, perhaps up to an SNMP managed device. The boss says that the 2950 is a bit too expensive, and I say these remote sites are too small for them anyway (some are just electrical enclosures at the side of the road). Anybody got any good ideas for me ? A small 8 port managed hub or switch that you like ? Please let me know what products you would consider for this, I'll buy you a coffee next time you're in Saskatoon !
I've looked through the Linksys line, and at 3COM but their managed devices seem to start at 16 ports of rackmounted interfaces. Ideally we can find a 5 or 8 port standalone device.
Best Regards, and Thanks for ANY suggestions,
Dave

Hi Dave,
I think the Catalyst Express 500 fits the bill. See:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6545/products_qanda_item0900aecd80322b09.shtml
However, as they have a 1RU size, it may be too big, although cheap.
The 2940 switches are the smallest managed switch we sell. They may be of interest as well.

  • Should I go for a managed switch?

    Hi all,
It's a SBS2K3 network with 2 servers (SBS and LOB) and 65 computers. The SBS2003 will be migrated to SBS2011 soon.
two main switches: Dlink 2x24port, unmanaged. I am thinking to replace them with 1x48port. I am wondering if I should get a managed switch or not. Would a managed switch help troubleshoot network slowness? If so, this can be the reason that convinces
    me.
    Any thoughts?
    Jack

I think a question is how is your LAN configured. One client has 30 workstations and another 20 mobile scanners with Access points. The complex is three building big so we use fiber from server site to each of the two other buildings. From that smart switch
we have 100ft runs to where most of the workstations are.
L2 switches provide easy way to find bad performing mobiles and cable issues.
Other client is all one floor one building and the not-smart 48 port switch is perfect as all new set runs, proper wall mounts and standard length cat6 set runs.
I do like smart switches, more options if you need them, great at start of upgrade and rather have options and not use them that to go back to owner for more money a year from now.

  • Recommendations for an HDMI switch/hub for Apple TV 2012

This seems to be a sticky issue - and probably made worse by the release of the new Apple TV (March 2012) edition with 1080p.
I want to buy an HDMI switch/hub so I can plug three devices (Laptop/XBox 360/AppleTV) into my one free HDMI port - so I don't have to keep unplugging/re-plugging cables in.
I did some searching, and found a number of highly recommended HDMI switches/hubs including the Portta 3to1 switch (990 4+ star reviews), the Kinivo 5 port switch (267 4.5+ star reviews) and more.
However the naysayers in the reviews frequently comment on incompatibility / 'always on' behavior with Apple TV.
Having looked around the community here - it looks like the MonoPrice 5x1 switch used to be the favorite recommendation - but unless I'm reading the manufacturers specifications wrong - it doesn't support 1080p.
All I want is a decent quality switch that won't keep auto-switching to the wrong device.  I'm completely happy (and maybe, if the always on stories are true) if the switch has NO auto-switch capability and just has a remote or physical button.
    Thanks
    Adam

Thanks for the quick response Jon.  Hmm.  Your right, I tracked down the newest version of the device on monoprice.com and it does support 1080p and 3D.   I read several reviews that suggested otherwise - but must have been referring to an old model.  (One was on cnet.com)   There were other people in the community talking about 1080p issues as well.  Looks like the new model is called MonoPrice 5x1 Enhanced.

I'll order one and see how it goes.

  • SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch

I've forgotten username & password of SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch. Is there any to recover them? but I don't want to lose configurations.

    Hi Anton,
You can access boot menu and choose password recovery but this option is only accessible via serial console and after you see Cisco logo hit ESC button once.
Once you choose password recovery current password will be ignored during this current session only so the first thing you need to do is to change and save new password. You can use CLI for this:
    switch(config)#username cisco password cisco
    switch(config)#exit
    switch#wr
and you should be ready to go :-)

  • Your opinion's on managed switches? I need one

I'm looking at getting possibly a couple managed switches for our office. We have the need for multiple VLAN's and quite a few features now available in them as we grow! I've dealt with Netgear for a long time and find them to be pretty reliable especially with their ProSafe producs having a lifetime warranty.
Which is the best buy for a reasonable price?
    http://www.netgear.com/Products/Switches/AdvancedSmartSwitches/GS748TR.aspx
this is what I was looking at, any other suggestions or opinions? thanks

I have bought 3Com, HP and LinkSys switches. Both managed and unmanaged. A couple of unmanaged HP switches have breaked down over the years, but haven't caused major trouble. The next switch I will buy will be a Cisco model. It has a configuration file in plain text, which is easy to compare to previous editions. It has all the features I can ask for. Maybe it does not have a fancy web based interface, but the command line is full featured. Linksys switches for example have only a limited set of instructions available over command line. Cisco has a separate console port, which again gives the admin full access to the setup. This is important when you have screwed up the configuration and cannot access the switch over the network.

  • SG500-52P 52-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch Stack

Have created a stack with a SG500-52P 52-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch and a SG500-28P 28-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch.
All seems fine, but my query is the SG500-52P 52-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch is showing has Master and the SG500-28P 28-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch is showing as a Backup, should this be a Slave?  Have a got the link cable wrong?

    Nope. You're all good.
In an SG500 stack, there are three roles: master, backup and slave. The master currently holds the management role of the stack. The backup is the switch that will take over the management role if the master fails. Slaves are remaining stack members. As long as the master is active, the backup will essentially function as a slave.
If you only have two switches, there will be a master and a backup with no slaves at all.

  • 8-12 Port Redundant PSU Managed Switch

Im looking to purchase a cisco managed switch (CLI with SSH Support).
It has to have dual power supplies, and no more than 8-12 ports.
Anyone got an idea for what model? I don't want to spend more than $1k or so.
    Thanks....

    Gigabit please.
PoE is really not necessary. This will be used as a redundant internet connection between my firewalls, so 8 ports would really be great (I really just need 4), but it MUST have Dual PSUs and Managed CLI with SSH Switch, along with Vlan Support and static routing (prefer OSPF is possible, but NOT necessary).
We running all our equipment via Cisco Routers and Switches, but I dont want to waste one of my Cisco 3750x switches for this purpose.
    Thanks...

  • SG 300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch -Lan connectivity issues

    Hello,
Our office lan running on 2 * SG 300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch.
    PID VID:SRW2024-K9 V01
    Firmware Version (Active Image):1.0.0.27
The users are seeing there connection to fileservers(mapped network drives) slowing down over the period.
We have to re-boot the offending switch to get the normal traffic back.
I have raised a ticket with cisco small business people and they said to upgrade the firmware to latest version.
But I am wondering why I need to upgrade this switch as the other switch which also brought at the same time with the same spec have no such issues.
Even if I decided to upgrade the firmware, they have recommended that I need to reset the switch to factory settings and try to put the previous configuration manually which is a worry for me.
I have logged on to the web console and I have found out, I can use TFTP or HTTP to backup the config, how do I use those services and what parameters i need to pass those to work, does using that functionality can rollback the switch to previous running configuration?
PS: Both the switch have connected together using a FC trunk with link aggregation eanbled. So how do I get all those settings back if I upgrade/rollback?
I just have to come up with some solution as it is affecting the business, so any help would be much appreciated.
Please see the attachment and let me know if any other info needed?
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards
    Suji

    Hi,
Please see the difference between the connected switches configuration.
Maybe the vlan 10 and 30 has been created wrongly.
Please see the config for both the switches and give me some advice/suggestions.

  • Plug and Play for Cisco Small Business 300 Series Managed Switch

    Good day
what are the Auto-Install options available for the Cisco Small Business 300 Series Managed Switch ?
It would appear there are none, the operating system is not the standard IOS I'm used to.
Would like to use it with Cisco Prime Infrastructure's PnP Gateway capability.
    Regards
    Pierre

Prime Infrastructure uses and assumes a CNS (Cisco Network Services) agent on the other side when enabling "plug & play". 300/500 Series do not run IOS and does not include a CNS agent, but there is a way to enable auto-configuration. The switches support DHCP Autoconfiguration (using DHCP options 66, 67, and others) whereby they automatically download their config from a TFTP server at boot time. This allows an administrator to put the configs for all the switches on a TFTP server and simply boot a factory-defaulted switch in order to get its config.
Attached is a document showing how this is done.
Hope the information would be of assistance.

Hi Ram, yes the MIB can be used. The switches are essentially the same in many regards (especially on a software level).
I do not know the OID for bandwidth. If you're looking for a particular OID may be this tool helps you

  • SG 300-52 52-Port Gigabit Managed Switch

    Hi Gentlemen,
We have recently purchased SG 300-52Port Cisco Switch to support our Network but they constantly having some bizarre issues or I assume bugs, i.e. we cannot Telnet nor SSH to the switch now, whereas we were able to SSH before, we have set them up for Remote Log Services to get some syslogs and reports but no report have been generated nor logs,
I have done some testing through Wireshark and there are absolutely no reports / logs.
We have some real issues with this switch and it’s hard to believe that this is a Cisco Product,
SG 300-52 Port Gigabit Managed Switch
    Firmware Version (Active Image ) : 1.1.1.8
    Firmware Version (Non-active ) : 1.1.0.73
    Boot Version : 1.0.0.4
It would be appreciated if someone could shed some light so that we could fix these issues.
    Thanks.

Yes, i am able to log into Web GUI,
I have had some serious issues before with set up/add different VLANs but we somehow make it work even though i am not optimistic...
Other problem that is now pending is setup Remote Log Services to get some syslogs.. it doesn’t generate anything no logs no reports ...
I am going to backup it up / reset /update the firmware again and see how it works.
Let me know if you have any suggestion.
    Thanks.

  • W520 "dismounts" monitor on DisplayPort when power management switches it off

    My setup:
    W520
    Mini Dock Plus Series 3
    External 1080p display on DVI
External 1440p display on DisplayPort (primary display)
The problem I'm experiencing is that the external display on the DisplayPort gets dismounted (I can hear the Windows "hardware disconnected" sound when this occurs) when the power management triggers the screens to switch off.  I can also trigger it by locking the screen (WinKey+L) and manually powering off the displays (FN+F3).
This is extremely annoying as it causes all of the Windows I have open to lose their size and position, and force into the primary display.  Windows also needs to regenerate the Aero previews (their just blank boxes until I focus the program window).
This did not occur previously when I had two external displays connected using the DVI ports.  But, I can't connect the 1440p display to DVI because DVI cannot drive a resolution that high.
For now, I've worked around it by disabling the display timeouts in power management, but I would like to have the screens switch off after a few minutes to conserve power and lifespan.
From what I can tell, this problem isn't limited to W520's and may be a larger issue with the DisplayPort standard or particular implementation.  What can I do about this?

    Update your NVIDIA drivers?
    Does this workaround help?
