Inexperienced 24p editor w/ FCE

Hey, hopefully someone can help me with my problem:
I shot a project using the Panasonic DVX100B at 24p (not advanced 24p). My cinematographer tells me I need to import using a camera that can at least shoot 24p if not the exact model. Trouble is, I don't have access to one at this current moment in time, and I have found that I can import using a camera that shoots regular video instead of 24p.
Basically, I have no idea how I should go about capturing my footage. Sometimes my FCE's capture program doesn't work right and I have had to import using iMovie. This hasn't been an issue before since I was shooting on regular video.
So... do I really have to import using a 24p camera, or can I import using another camera and change the settings while I'm editing?
I've read numerous discussions on the "editing 24p" subject, and they have not helped me understand it better as of yet, and I can't find any useful information in the manual.
Can a young lad get some help? Thanks!

I read this thread earlier today trying to find a solution to a similar problem, and learned some information I hadn't known. If you have shot the footage in 24fps, you can import it at 24fps, and then when you export to DVD, you can keep it at 24fps, and when played back on NTSC, the DVD player and TV will convert it back to 30fps. In my experience, this looks the best. I'd do a quick test with one clip, and actually burn a test DVD with 24fps to make sure it looks good.
That being said, when I was using the AG-DVX100a, importing at 30fps, exporting 30fps, and burning 30fps was a much easier workflow. It's completely native to everything, and you never have any synch issues, and it still looks like 24P.

  • FCE HD(Preferably 3.5), how do you like, and is it worth buying?

    Hi Everyone. I am seriously thinking about buying a Macbook and Final Cut Express 3.5, but I need some insider's opinions before I seal the deal. How do you like FCE? Do you feel like your getting as much Bang for your Buck as possible? Or is it simply just a reasonably priced software package? How do you like the selection of transitions, filters, and LiveType Options? Do you feel that there are enough choices of transitions, filters, LT Options? Are there enough custimizable options to give your project a personal touch? Overall, how do you like FCE as a whole? Also, please feel free to elaborate or further explain yourself in any way, shape, or form. I would especially appreciate it if someone would give there personal opinion of the selection of Transitions, Filters, and LiveType options(as you can see the amount of transitions, filters, etc. are a major concern to me, as I feel that I can edit alot better with a large range of choices).
    Please Reply, and every word you type will be carefully read over and consider by me. Once again, your Support is **GREATLY** Appreciated. Thank you so much!

    Final Cut Express HD 3.5(Universal)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I've used the gamut - iMovie HD, FCE 3.5, and now FCP 5.2.
    I originally just used iMovie HD. Say what you want about it, for quick edits and even professional looking basic videos (even in HD), it does a pretty good job. It's an amazingly powerful little editor for the price.
    But there isn't too much tweaking you can do to the built in effects, and there's nothing like LiveType with it... so I then moved to FCE 3.5.
    FCE 3.5 is almost identical to FCP 5 - the difference are small but to some, substantial. Paraphrased from GeniusDV.com: "FCE only supports the HDV format. HDV is a compressed format which uses mpg2 for its video compression scheme. HDV is starting with a 25Mbit signal with 4:2:0 color space. Final Cut Pro on the other hand can be configured to support ALL major formats of HD, including DVCPro HD. DVCPro HD is 100Mbit at 4:2:2. Unless you are a broadcast technician, don't let the numbers scare you. HDV still looks VERY good."
    They're right about HDV, and I shoot in it exclusively. A critical feature to add is that FCE does not do "native HDV"; all the HDV footage must be recompressed into the Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. (iMovie HD does this too). This results in one more compress-recompress cycle and also causes footage to take up at least 3X the storage on your hard drive. It works though. Native HDV support in FCP was one of the main reasons I switched.
    "FCE has many of the standard effects found in Final Cut Pro, with the following exceptions. There is no three-way color corrector, which means the ability to control the blacks, whites and greys of an image independently.... FCE does not support time-remapping. You may also have heard the term time-warp. This basically refers to the ability to speed up and slow down video over a fixed amount of time. And finally, no After Effects plug-in architecture is supported for FCE."
    "Other feature differences
    No customizable mapping of the keyboard, No support for third party capture cards. No ability to batch record No 24P support."
    FCE does come with Soundtrack (a less-featured version of Soundtrack Pro), 4GB of nice Apple Loops, 4GB of LiveType fonts and effects, and a training DVD. LiveType is, to me, like "Motion Lite" and some cool title work can be done with it.
    The addition of Soundtrack Pro isn't that significant over Garageband's integration with iMovie HD, but the addition of the loops and LiveType is. You can create significantly nicer titles in LiveType that go beyond Apple's iMovie templates. If you want to stick with the templates though (which afford a small amount of customization options), iMovie still works ok for basic edits.
    Final Cut Studio also offers very good integration with Motion, Shake, DVD Studio Pro, and Soundtrack Pro that are not present at all/difficult to integrate in FCE. And of course, you get all those programs as well (except shake) with tens of GB of effects and templates, as well as pounds of books and training materials.
    That's what prompted me to upgrade to FCS, once it went Universal so I can use it fast on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.
    Bottom line - if it wasn't for my need of native HDV and the want to play with Motion, I would have stayed with FCE. It's a very, very full-featured editor for the price.
    And iMovie HD? I still use it today to produce quick edits when I have very limited time or need to tweak.
    It's all about what you need to do.

  • Globally Replacing a Noisy Media File with a Cleaned Up File in FCE

    I'm working on a project where I have found that one of my master clips has an audio issue. I've used subclips from this master clip in many places in my video. I'd like to know if thee is a way to process the audio of this master clip and have FCE pickup the cleaned up version of the media automatically for all the subclips used in my sequence. I've found a noise removal effect in a program called Audacity that works quite well to get rid of the noise in my master clip. I'm just not sure about the workflow to get the cleaned up file back into my FCE timeline. Audacity is supposed to work as an external editor in FCE, but haven't been able to get this to work correctly. Here's my proposal:
    1. Place my master clip on new sequence and export the audo tracks to an AIFF file.
    2. Process this file in Audacity using the Audacity Noise Removal effect and save to a .AIFF file.
    3. Import this clean .AIFF file back into FCE.
    4. Repace the audio on the timeline with the cleaned up audio file.
    5. Export this sequence to QTMovie.
    6. Exit FCE and using Finder, replce the original master clip media file in the Capture Scratch directory with the new file with the identical name as the original file
    7. Re launch FCE and hope the program picks up the new file like nothing had changed.
    Does anyone know if this can work as a way to do a global replace on a mdeia file tht needed cleaning up.
    Doug

    Should work as long as both files are the exact same length - the alternative is moving your original file to a new location then using the reconnect menu to navigate to the edited clip.

  • AVCHD--1920x1080 24p native--final cut express

    New to FCE and video. I shot a bunch of video on a Canon HFS 21 in 1920 x 1080 24p native. I am trying to import it into FCE, but it looks like FCE wants me to degrade my video to import it and edit. Same goes for some video I shot with my Canon Mark IV, which was also 24 p. Is there anyway to work with FCE and 24p native or do I need to upgrade to FCS? Thanks in advance.

    I just got a Panasonic GH2 which can shoot in 1080p24 and I edit with FCE. What I have figured out is that if you just use a 29.97fps timeline, it plays the 24fps video fine. Then when you export the project at the end, just export back to 24fps and it should line back up with the original 24fps of the video you shot and not skip or duplicate any frames.
    The one thing that might be a problem is that when you tell FCE to export at 24fps, it actually does what I think is a pull-down and exports at 23.98 fps. This may mean that once in a great while there is a dropped frame. If you do the same thing but use a 25fps timeline in FCE the actual exported rate is 24.04 I think. This is worse as there will be duplicate frames twice as often.
    If you are concerned about the dropped frames with using the 29.97fps timeline in FCE, export to a lossless (or near lossless) format at 29.97fps (ie by not using "Quicktime Conversion"), then post process the result in JES De-interlacer (free), using "standards conversion" to convert the video from 29.97 to 24fps (use telecine mode, not blend). This will resample the frame rate to exactly 24fps and you should be good. Link:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
    I have noticed some weird jumpy stuff if I slow down a 24p clip in FCE where the camera was panning left and try to fight that by moving the clip right on the canvas (the faster frame rate of the FCE motion keyframe move fighting the slower frame rate of the original video moving in the opposite direction), but I assume that would also happen with 30p or 60i video in that situation if you slowed it down enough - just the 24fps video is making it more obvious at less extreme speed reductions.

  • HDV 720p 25 and 24p films

    Hi,
    I want to make a movie filmed with a DSLR in 24p. In FCE, I can just choose HDV 720p 25... so FCE adds a 13th frame (that is a copy of the 12th frame) for each second when I put a sequence in the timeline.
    My movie is a dance movie, so I would prefer to not have that additionnal frame.
    Is it possible to prevent FCE from adding a 25th frame in the timeline? Even if the movie is speeded up (if it would be possible, I imagine I would slow down the sequence at 96% - so I find back 24 frames per second).
    Or, do you have an other idea? Is there a way to easily delete the 13th frame of each second?
    Thanks in advance,
    Yann

    It would help if you specify the exact make/model DSLR you have.
    FCE supports 720p25/30. It does not directly support 24fps anything.
    I'd suggest looking at MPEG Streamclip to convert your camcorder videos to 720p25 or 30 (QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec) before importing the video into FCE.

  • Stopcellediting removes my custom cell editor

    Hi Gurus,
    Please look at the following where I am using stopcellediting with my custom editor. Problem is when I use stopcellediting, it removes the cell editor from the table, so in result any function I want to do in the cell editor doesnt get executed anymore. I tried setcelleditor right after stopcellediting but did not fix.
    For example if user types anything else than number I want to check and when it reaches 10 characters I want to add new blank record, but stopCellEditing does not let me do it, and I have to stopCellEditing in certain conditions (I did not include those conditions here) eg if user clicks tab or delete or etc.

    hi camikr
    Thanks again for your help.
    here is the sample program, i tried setClickCountToStart. it still doesnt show the cursor, if i dont click.
    Also when I type the value in the first cell eg, i have to press tab TWICE to get to the next cell. or if it has error eg not 10 digits and then I fix it then again i have press TAB twice to get to next field
    How can display the cursor when I click or use tab to next field, and how to use one tab only to get to the next field.

  • Inspecting FCE pixel ratio - always anamorphic, or square force possible?

    We produce widescreen (16:9) DVDs using FCE+iDVD and some DVD players crop the sides of the video, even when playing the video on a widescreen monitor. Other DVD players letterbox the top and bottom of the frame and interpolate the played area of the screen. (The played area appears to be interpolated because there is interpolation-based pixelation and blurring on the letterboxed displays, but not on the cropped displays.) We're consistenly getting issues when producing video on FCE, and the aspect ratio issues were traced back to FCE using anamorphic pixel ratios.
    (Also, we had the problem in the past with iDVD not detecting FCE output (using quicktime conversion (854x480)) as being anamorphic - this problem was worked around using anamorphicizer.)
    Therefore, I want to use square pixels in FCE, since we use both DVDs, and web-based methods of disseminating our video, the square pixels will hopefully avoid this issue with the DVD players playing things in different modes, and at the same time will keep the web-based video pixels square so we don't have morphic problems when we go to web. Is it possible (to force FCE to use square pixels)?
    Also, is it possible to examine the video using any products (mac, third party, open source, etc) to query the produced video and determine what the pixel ratios are? I don't want to have to go to Adobe products since we just had the editor buy FCE, but that's the only viable solution I know which will produce the proper aspect ratio and pixel aspect ratios reliably....

    Thanks Tom, we do record in HD - 1080p in AVCHD. I believe FCE transcodes the video into the apple intermediate codec, am I correct on that one? We produce publicity videos that we then put on youtube for some clients. We're running into issues where the aspect ratio is off when going to a square pixel video format. Is it possible to tell FCE to export into square pixels? I want to produce some videos in square pixels for posting to web-based media and some in anamorphic pixels for DVD work ....
    As far as the letterboxing point then, is iDVD really just that bad? I had seen quality issues with it before, but I didn't think it could possibly be this bad... Our editor has Toast; is that a potential alternative for authoring the DVDs?

  • Canon Vixia HV40 & FCE

    Hi, I'm new here on this board. I'm a student filmmaker and have been using FCE for a few years now. I just gotten a brand new Canon Vixia HV40 for Christmas to help me achieve HD in 24p for my films which looks amazing on my camera.
    But I have a problem. When I capture/import the footage, the audio goes out of sync from the footage. On the camera it looks normal, but when importing, it's totally off.
    I've been hearing about that I need to upgrade into FCP so I can change my settings to upload it in the right format. Is there any other way to upload 24p from this camera into FCE instead of spending on FCP? I need help! Please help me!
    Thank you.

    Dustin,
    1 - If the audio drifts out of sync over time, the first thing to look at is your audio settings. Most camcorders default to 12-bit audio; hopefully you changed it to 16-bit before filming. (16-bit is aka 48KHz)
    The audio setting of your recorded video has to match the audio setting of the Easy Setup you use when you capture the video and the sequence settings of the sequence you put the video into, preferably all are 16 bit/48KHz. If the audio properties do not match, the audio will go out of sync as the video plays.
    2 - FCExpress does not support 24p. Only 60i, 50i and 720p30. There are some tricks for doing 60p but if you really want to do native 24p then FCStudio is what you will need.
    You can import the 24p material into FCE, as you found out, however you will be fitting it into a 30fps sequence (actually 29.97 fps). Motion won't look very good.
    3 - The Canon HV40 also supports a 24p-inside-60i mode. Have you tried that?

  • PPro 24p Issues..

    So I posted this on the mac forum and got no responses. Thought I'd try here and see if the appleheads were lingering in the main forum.
    I've heard that adobe has trouble with 24p footage on mac versions. I'd like to read up on this as I'm looking into a DVX 100b for the sole purpose of 24p (I have FCE but that doesn't support 24p as of now). Thanks in advance, also any fixes or ways to work around the issue people have I would love to know. Thanks.

    I would find it strange if Premiere worked any differently on a Mac with this footage.

  • FCE frame rates-which ones?

    I cannot figure out which frame rates I can edit: can I do 24p; normal or advanced. I've got a promo video and the client wants 24p but can FCE support it?
    Thanks in advance.
    (FCE HD 3.5.1)

    As an alternative to upgrading to FCP, however, I believe the Nattress Film Effects plugin set works for FCE. It should allow you to convert your finished product to 24p (or any other format), and all for $100. You'll have to email Graeme about FCE compatibility.

  • Cell request focus problem

    Hi,
    I have jtable with two column. Column A and column B. I type string "stupid" in column A. Then when I change the cell by pressing Enter or right arror or other arrow, it suddenly check the value in column A with the string "clever". Then it is not same. So my Jtable put focus in that cell again and hightlight the string "stupid" so when user type something, the string "stupid" is cleared and replaced by whatever the user typed. The user is forced to type string "clever" otherwise he cann't go anywhere.
    How do I do that? ( put focus on certain cell and hightlight the string )
    I don't know how to hightlight but this is how I try to give the focus to that cell:
    JTable.getModel().addTableModelListener( new TableModelListener() {
        public void tableChanged(TableModelEvent tme) {
            final int column = tme.getColumn();
            final int row = tme.getFirstRow();
            if(column==0) {
                try {
                    if((String)JTable.getValueAt(row,column)!="clever") {
                            JTable.setEditCell(row,column);
                catch( SQLException e ) {
                    e.printStackTrace();
    });With this code, I looked up in that cell. Cann't do anything. Cann't push the button. I just have to kill it by operating system.
    Thank you.

    A TableModelListener listens for changes that have already been made to the table, so you should not be doing error checking here.
    Here is one way (I don't know if its the best) that allows you to do some error checking:

  • Two movies at the same time

    I want to run two .avi files on top of each other at the same time in one movie - can i do that in idvd or imovie? Sort of like in 24, where they show four scenes in four boxes, i want to show two scenes, one on top of the screen, and one on the bottom.

    No. The cheapest way to go would be QT Pro ($30). It allows up to 99 tracks of data which means you can have multiple tracks/layers of video. iMovie on allows one movie track and has no way to scale and/or offset multiple video tracks in the display area. Basically, you would have to move up to a more advanced editor like FCE or FCP to do what you want to do.

  • Clips on time line are not playing at right time.

    I dragged my movie clips and photos onto my timeline, but when I play the movie back the clips and photos are not playing at the time they are placed on the timeline. What do I do? Thanks.

    Hi
    TimeLine in iMovie - any version - doesn't behave as in other video editors as FCE/P or Premiere.
    Here each new video-clip or photo snapps to the one to it's left. One can't fix them in Time else putting in "Dummy" clips in between.
    If they still don't playback in a continous way - there can be several problems
    • free space on Start-up hard disk low - I never go under 25Gb free space
    (free space on other second/external hard disks - doesn't matter)
    • iMovie pref file might have been corrupted - close iMovie, trash it and re-start iMovie
    • Use of strange video and photo and audio file format might also do this - iMovie HD6 wants
    video - streamingDV as from miniDV tape Camera via FireWire
    photos - .jpg and .png
    audio - .aiff 48kHz 16-bit (or from Audio-CD) - NO .mp3 or direct from iTunes

  • Video recording theater productions

    I am part of a small local theater group, which does things like Shakespeare, etc. on a "theater in the round" style stage. We seat about 100, tops, so it is a very small facility.
    We have tried to get a system set up whereby we can video some of the performances and rehearsals, but are working with old, hand-me-down PC equipment and free downloads of video software (I think there are 6 different programs currently on the system!) The two cameras are older 8mm video cameras. The system for video is not working properly, and we are frustrated. The power-that-is, does not have the time to figure out how to run any of the programs properly.
    I would like to convince "them" that we can do this via Macs, and it would work, and be relatively easy for us to use. I am familiar with using iMovie for my home stuff. Of course, since this is a small theater, there is no budget. But I am also on the board, and may be able to convince them that we should budget for this endeavor.
    What I am looking for is a how-to, I guess. What kind of cameras would work easily for this? Currently, we have the cameras connected via wireless antennaes to the computers in the basement. Is there a tutorial somewhere which can help me? Please?

    so, actually, you are recording simultanously from two diff. angles to catch the action around the stage; and then you do.. what? playback for rehearsal? making DVDs for selling? live-playout for cable-chanel...?
    I would..
    • forget that wireless part.. just a cause for trouble..
    • forget that direct-to-PC part.. just a cause for trouble..
    • get two used (=cheap, <600$) miniDVs camcorder, record to tape
    • use any Mac-editor (iMovie, FCE, Norrkross, Avid, Premiere.. )
    • deliver..
    gives us some detail about what you you like to accomplish, how to deliver ...
