Infamous WHINE & lack of Processor Performance settings?

I have owned all of the Al books from the 1ghz 17" to the 1.67 17". I noticed the whine first on the 15" 1.25 AlBook 2 yrs ago. During that time we were able to throttle the Processor settings ourselves via the Energy Saver setting in System Preferences. As of the release of the 1.67 AlBooks that option is no longer available. When the Processor Setting was set to Automatic, the AlBooks ALAWYS had the WHINE & HISS from under the keyboard in the same spot the MacBook Pro's demonstrate today.
I called Apple Tech support this afternoon and spoke to a tier 2 "guy". I asked about Speedstep / Processor throttling and that option being taken away from us - his reply was that the new processors control that now and are able to go from reduced settings to highest in a fraction of a second never noticed by the user. WRONG ANSWER. What he's telling me is the Processor is ALWAYS set to AUTOMATIC and we can't do anything about that. While his answer may be true, these units have the same whine & hiss as the previous AlBooks when set to Automatic. THIS IS A PROBLEM.
I do want that option BACK on my portable!!! It was nice knowing that if I was only wanting to watch a DVD on battery power that I could ensure low power consumption by going to the Energy Saver and setting the processor performance to "Reduced" or to always have it set to Highest if so desired. I have never been able to set the processor performance to Automatic and NOT hear the whine & hiss.
I have the 2.0ghz MacBook Pro w/ 2g RAM. I do not hear the whine whie the unit is plugged in - but on batter power it's very very loud. I could be wrong, but past experiences have proven that the automatic setting which WE ALL HAVE BY DEFAULT on our MacBook Pro's will produce this unwanted noise. This is an amazing laptop. But I am feeling a bit gimped having those settings taken away.

Since when does people saying something is so make it so? I'm curious; exactly how many people does it take to repeat some random statement before it automatically becomes fact?
And no, what I said was not meant as a flame. I just wanted to explain why it is hard to take the post seriously. Apparently you took what I said in the opposite way I'd intended. That being said, I did not mean it that way, so sorry for any offense.
Of course a support forum is going to be filled with posts about problems. What would you say is more likely to compel you to make a thread in a support forum, a problem (of any sort), or no real reason at all, just for kicks? Granted , when a product first comes out, there will be a few "I love my MBP!" type threads, but those go away after awhile. The complaints remain, because, let's face it, life is full of problems, and computers have more than their share as a whole.
The reason it's important that this is your first post is that is isn't very hard to imagine people registering to stir up controversy, goof around, or incite even more inflammatory responses (read: troll), when ANY new product is released. My post wasn't accusing you of any of this, merely trying to explain (beforehand) some responses you may get later on.
My only advice is that if you are unsatisfied with your machine, exchange it for a new one. If a noisy screen/processor/speaker is enough to make you reconsider your purchase entirely, then perhaps it would be wiser to wait until this particular issue has been ironed out on Apple's end (certainly not a terrible idea).
I do understand where you are coming from with the processor settings, by the way, and I do miss those settings at times, mostly because I'm a control freak. However, I am assuming that the MBP uses Intel's speed-step technology, and I don't know of a way to manipulate that, so it looks like that little feature is gone. It very well could be at the root of the noise issues, but at this point, that is only speculation.

  • Performance settings

    Hello,
I had a few questions regarding PS performance.
    **Quick note about usage**
I mainly use PS for image stacking.  Usually between 30 -50 photos each around 25MB in size.  After stacking them and blending them I usually flatten and then from there make between 10 -30 layer adjustments etc.
    **Quick note about specs**
    Win 7 64bit
    i5-2500K cpu
    16GB DDR3 RAM
    GTX 460
    1TB 7200 HDD (always kept defrag'd)
    55GB of freespace on SSD
    1.  I have read that PS uses windows Pagefile for certain things EVEN if free ram is available, is this correct?
    2.  I have read that PS will not store anything on a scratch disc until RAM is unavailable is this correct?
    3.  While working efficiency on status bar ALWAYS shows 100% However I experience lag sometimes, is this normal?
    4. In performance settings I have 8556MB = 8.35GB of ram allotted to PS.  Yet in resource monitor it shows PS consuming 9.33GB of RAM.  How can this occur?
    5.  In status bar scratch sizes shows:  Scratch 10.6G/8.35G.  Now I get that 8.35G is my allotted RAM.  I am assuming that Adobe is WANTING 10.6GB.  So given that Adobe is ACTUALLY getting 9.33GB I am lacking approximately 1.3GB of RAM.  Is this going to a scratch disk or windows page file?
    6.  I have seen some folks say to put Scratch disk on SSD, and other posts I have read say not to because it consumes a ton of writes thus quickening the death of the entire SSD, thoughts please?
    7.  In performance preferences it asks me to choose between: **Tall and Thin** || **Default** ||  **Big and Flat**  Given my above usage which one should I pick?
    8.  If I later start using other design premium apps at the same time, is there a way for Adobe to KNOW that I want a TOTAL of 8.35GB of RAM allotted throughout all Adobe programs?  Obviously I don't want to set them all at 70% RAM allowance, but will they intelligently share the 70% between themselves?
I appreciate the advice and help folks,
    Jordyn

    1.  I have read that PS uses windows Pagefile for certain things EVEN if free ram is available, is this correct?
This hasn't to do anything with that. The page file exists completely outside of the programs. Programs simply request memory from the operating system and the OS decides whether it uses physical RAM or swap space based on its own logic. You simply do not give any consideration to the fact, that the operating system, drivers and otehr programs also consume RAM and that in order to secure functionality, there are safety margins that cannot be passed. E.g. the OS will always have so and so much kernel memory and exclusive memory areas that are not even accessible to applications. Furthermore, Windowes also creates a number of system caches for hibernation, font handling and what have you, further subtracting from what could be used by any single program.
    2.  I have read that PS will not store anything on a scratch disc until RAM is unavailable is this correct?
Why should it? That would be grade A stupid. Why should PS not relegate an image that you are not currently working on to the scratch in order to free up more working memory for your active image? Think about it!
    3.  While working efficiency on status bar ALWAYS shows 100% However I experience lag sometimes, is this normal?
Yes. Your history states and undo queue fill up and even RAM access cycles cost time when shuffling around gigabytes. Feel free to set them to the bare minimum at the cost of not being able to go back or use things liek the history brush... Also OpenGL andf shuffling image buffers back and forth to your graphics card may contribute to (perceived) lag.
    4. In performance settings I have 8556MB = 8.35GB of ram allotted to PS.  Yet in resource monitor it shows PS consuming 9.33GB of RAM.  How can this occur?
The program doesn't run on thin air, you know... There's a difference between working memory and the overall program memory usage as seen by the operating system. Those 8.35 GB are for images, history, undo queu and whatnot, but naturally PS itself wil ltake up some memory even if nothing is loaded.
Same as before - there are reasons to use scratch files and there is an overall higher memory consumption, not just what you assign as working memory.
    6.  I have seen some folks say to put Scratch disk on SSD, and other posts I have read say not to because it consumes a ton of writes thus quickening the death of the entire SSD, thoughts please?
I stick with what I have always said in the past - excessive writing of large data blocks can quickly wear out SSDs and all there giga-IOps capabilities don't change that. They shine as boot drives for quickly launching everything, work nice as web and data servers with tiny data packages, but I would never use them for swap. I have set all my temp variables and pagefiles to platter drives.
No. Most other programs do not even have explicit memory management options and rely on your operating system's dynamic memory management.

  • [help] can't find "processor performance" option in the energy saver

hello....i've just bought my new macbook white 2.0 Ghz. the Mac OS version is 10.5.6
*i can't find any option to change my processor performance* on the "energy saver preferences"....here is the screenshot
it's odd when compared to the screenshot from apple support page
    http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECAREALLGEOS/HT3092/HT30923b.jpg
please help me on this, i can't perform image editing well when the battery get low....thanks a lot

On PowerPC machines, there is an option specifically for Processor Performance, while on Intel machines, the only option is for the entire computer - Better Energy Savings, Normal, Better Performance, or Custom. These can be selected for both on power adapter and battery and affect not only the processor, but also the display, sleep, and hard drive.
On 10.5.6, part of the update removed the option to change power settings from the menu bar drop-down menu - perhaps that is what you are looking at.

  • Processor Performance with Battery

    Hi All,
When using the battery, is your processor speed / performance capped at all?
I was playing with iDVD the other day on battery and when the app was rendering the menus in real-time I noticed a significant stuttering... I havent tried with main power yet, but would of thought my spec machine could handle it...
    Any thoughts?

When using the battery, is your processor speed / performance capped at all?
Check in System Preferences -> Energy Saver. Next to "Settings for" choose "Battery" in the drop-down menu. Then click on the Options tab. Towards the bottom there should be a Processor Performance setting, which by default is (at least for other notebooks) set to "Reduced."
Changing that to "Highest" is a good option if you're doing work that requires the best possible processor performance.
And there are other options in the Energy Saver preferences that you might want to take a look at while you're there. Just keep in mind that anything you change in the Battery sections will also affect battery life.
You can also choose some basic Energy Saver settings from a menu when you click on the battery icon in your menubar.
Note that I'm still using a PowerBook and can't check this on a MacBook Pro... yet. (Tomorrow I'll be able to.  ;-))

  • KT3 Ultra 3: Crashes on high-performance settings

    Hello, another frustrated newbie here.
Here's my problem.  I have an AMD 2200 xp processor.  When my computer boots up it says I have an AMD 1500 processor.  Yes, I know I need to change to FSB speed to 133 then I'll have a 2200 processor.  But here's the rub, when I change the FSB setting to 133 in the bios my computer crashes on reboot.  The only way to not crash is to go back into the bios, return to defaults (100 speed FSB) and then the computer works again.  It also crashes when I try other high-speed settings in the bios.  Everything else is working fine.  I've updated all the drivers I could find.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I am reliying on the expertise of this forum.
    Thanks

Hi, using "High Performance" settings actually tweak on few hidden BIOS settings that's not visible in the BIOS menu. You can firstly, load "BIOS Default" settings, and then set the rests to high performance settings.
IF you still prefer to stick to "Load High PErformance Settings", then you might need to tune down your DRAM settings instead, tune to what your DDR RAM is capable of.

  • No Automatic Processor Performance Setting

I am the new owner of a refurbished 17" Powerbook G4, 1.67GHZ, Dual Layer Superdrive. On my previous Powerbooks, in the energy saver control panel there always was the option for Automatic Processor Performance Setting, where one could set the processor to reduced, automatic or highest. On this new machine, there is no Automatic Processor Performance Setting! Any explanation?

  • Photomerge settings help, performance settings?

Having issues using photomerge with the latest version of Photoshop.  I have about 120 images that are 16 mp RAW.  What should I have my Photoshop Performance settings at? Cache Levels and Cache tile size?  Also how much ram should I use?
My system settings are 18 gig of RAM, Core i7 920 like 4 different hard drives, Nvidia geforce 570 HD
I was using windows 8, now trying 7 but they still both crash and or take hours with no results.

I suggest Cache Levels = 6 as this is shown to speed Photomerge up vs. a setting of 4..
With 18 GB of RAM in your system I'd suggest settiing Photoshop to use 90%.  But 18 GB of RAM is going to be WAY too little for 120 images of 16 megapixels each.  48 GB or more (possibly much more) would be helpful for that big a stitch.
Make sure you have a HUGE amount of free scratch space available - I mean at least 400 GB or more.  Scour your system for Photoshop temp files left behind from your past failed runs.
Also, what's your ultimate goal in image size?  Do you really need to stitch the images together after conversion to the full 18 MP size?  Maybe you should set Camera Raw to deliver conversions at a smaller size to reduce system resource usage.

  • Processor Performance??

I read a discussion on mac gaming (http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68adc78a) It says that for certain games, an idea is to change something called processor performance. I am currently on my dads G4 Power mac as my imac has not arrived yet but in system preferences i cannot find anything about the processor (i even did the search using spotlight in system pref.) is this something that is only accessable on the G5 imac or do i find it somewhere else?
    Thanks in advance
    Adi

This option was added to the operating system for laptops. Setting the performace to lowest results in increased battery life and less heat. It only shows up for G5s and it's usually only changed once on a desktop system.
I'm waiting for "ultra-fastest" and "frackin-fastest" to be added to the drop down menu in 10.5

  • Webi Processing Server _ Performance Settings.

    Hi all,
How to modify the Wb Intelligence Processing Server Performance Settings in BO XI3.1
    Thanks
    Reddeppa k

    Hi,
you can change the webi processing server settings by logging on the CMC (URL: http://<name of your BOBJ server>/CmcApp as administrator. Just invoke the "servers" panel and select your web intelligence processing server. Over the context menu (left mouse button) select the option "properties". You can modify several parameters there. For more information look in the BOE administration guide:
You have to restart the webi server (invoke again the context menu and select Restart Server) so that the new settings will be applied.

  • "Processor performance" preference change not taking?

I'm used to keeping my "processor performance" at "reduced" most of the time, unless I'm doing something cpu-intensive like encoding. Lately I've noticed that changing from "reduced" to "highest" (in preferences / energy saver / options) has no affect. (I can tell because my fans don't ramp up as they do when the processor is being taxed.)
    Anyone else experience this?

NO, but I can speculate why. The power is more evenly distributed, like the PRAM, NVRAM. It really makes sense spreading the power around like OSx does by default.I think your new method is better for your system over the long hall.'''

  • New performance settings in SPRO (2004s)

    Hello,
Does anyone know how we should set the parameters in SPRO for maximum performance?  NOTE: We are running on Oracle 10g.
According to note 938040, these parameters should replace the DB_STATISTICS entry we used to have in RSADMIN.  Is this true?
There are actually 2 sections in SPRO:
    1. A global section in SPRO/SAP NetWeaver/Business Intelligence/Performance settings/Settings for Database Interfaces.
The way I understand this section is that if your DBMS is able to handle histograms, you don't have to tick the check box.  Assuming we run the stats in Oracle on a daily basis, is it okay to leave the checkbox unchecked?
    2. In the Oracle specific section in SPRO/SAP NetWeaver/Business Intelligence/Performance settings/Settings for Database Interfaces (Oracle).
From what I read through the help, we can speed up the index rebuild by unchecking the "Logging while index" check box.  We've done some testing in C&B and so far so good for this one (we are about to test it in PROD).  However, with the "Degree" field, wether we put 0 or 8 in it and we launch a massive aggregate, we haven't seen any difference.  Does anyone has any experience with that field?
    Thanks in advance,
    D.

    Hi
    Your assumption is correct.
Let me first enlighten you throwing light on the purpose of using the parameter DB_STATISTICS,it was used in prior 3.x versions and I was able to leverage it for maximum use;however there are pros and cons to it.
    <b>Example -</b>
    Point -1
DB statistics (optimizer statistics) are created at certain times in BW. These processes can occupy a considerable portion of the runtime, especially in the case of large scenarios (large InfoCubes, many aggregates).  The relevance of the DB statistics is particularly important if a roll-up or change run (or other loading or loading-related processes) is executed at the same time that queries are being executed.
If, however, a roll-up or change run takes place during a <b>Night time or Weekend</b> window, in which very <b>Few</b> queries or no queries are running, it may be useful not to create the DB statistics at first but to create them at the end of the process. To do this, you can deactivate the DB statistics in BW.
You can deactivate the DB statistics initiated by the BW system by making the following entry in the <b>RSADMIN</b> table; You can use the SAP_RSADMIN_MAINTAIN ABAP report for this:
    Object: <b>DB_STATISTICS</b>
    Value: <b>OFF</b>
OR using SPRO as you mentioned above.
    Point -2
    Check Box - "<b>Logging while Index</b>"
By default, Oracle database logging is deactivated for index structure. This means that indexes cannot be restored from a database backup. They need to be structured again with the transaction <b>RSRV</b>.
So I hope you have used RSRV ??
If this parameter is <b>SET</b>, the index structure is written to the database backup. This can lead to a quicker restoretime but <b>SLOWS</b> down building of the index.
    <b>DEGREE</b> (Option)
This parameter sets the number of parallel processes that Oracle can use when building the aggregate/index. The value 0 corresponds to the default value in Oracle configuration  ('PARALLEL DEFAULT').I am in the DEV so yet to validate and give proof of concept for it..
    Hope it Helps

  • New Performance Settings and Improvements in 2004s

    Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a document or website with all performance settings that are
new in BI 2004s (and that were not available in BW 3.5 or lower).
If this information is not grouped yet, I want to invite everyone to gather the 2004s specific performance information in this thread. The improvements that I'm aware  of are:
    Write-optimized DSO: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/b6/de1c42128a5733e10000000a155106/frameset.htm

Optimization hint for logical MultiProvider partitioning (native in BI 2004s) Note 911939
Of course there must be more.
    Best regards,
    Danië

You are partially rite and you mentioned the new settings which come along with the aforementioned settings
Heres my take on few others -
    <b>1)Tcode = RSODSO_SETTINGS</b>
used for Parallel activation of ODS to improve performance
    <b>2)RSCUSTV25</b>
    Query- SQL Split
    Data mart Query Split
    <b>3)se16-->RSADMIN</b>
    DB_STATISTICS = OFF
OSS note 938040  - as per SAP
As of Support Package 8, the parameter is no longer used. This means that BI triggers the creation of database statistics, regardless of this parameter. The database itself determines whether the statistics are to be created or changed.
Tool BRCONNECT to be used after loading of all cubes.
    <b>4)RSCUSTV8</b>
    Reporting Lock = X
If you set this parameter to X, database commits are executed during master data activation. This prevents an overflow of rollback segments. Because temporary inconsistent states can occur here, reporting is locked during this time.
If you currently load large quantities of data in which many values change, leading to problems with the rollback segments, you should set this parameter.
    <b>5)Parallel Processing of query</b>
    Se16-->RSADMIN
    QUERY_MAX_WP_DIAG = 6

Here you get all the different independent areas which you can work to perk up the
    performance related issues.

    Aggregate Parameters
    BI system Data transfer
    OLAP cache

  • Photoshop CS6 Performance Settings Recommendations?

I use Photoshop CS6 for Image editing.
I just purchased a new Imac 27 inch late 2012 Model with an i7 3.4Ghz Processor plus the following:
    1TB Fusiion HDD
    24Gb of System Ram
    2GB Video Card.
This screenshot shows what I currenlty have as my setttings in the performance pane.
I'd like if possible to maximize the performace given my system spec.
Are these settings I have now optimum?
I have my scratch disc currently set to be my MacHDD
I do have a FW800 Aux1 which is not being used that has 900GB of free space.
    Should I use it also?
Any suggestions on performace would be appreciated

First, without describing the kind of Photoshop work you do, no one is going to be able to do more than guess wildly at how to set up your system.  There are some general guidelines, some of which C.P. has stated.  Do you edit huge documents?  Long editing sessions?  Bunches of documents at once?
Photoshop does not use multiple scratch disks simultaneously as far as I can tell.  It's more of a "this one ran out of space, let me fall back to the next entry in the list" kind of thing.  So there's no real performance advantage to specifying two drives as far as I can see - just convenience if you have limited space.
When pushing up against limits, it's good to allow the OS to have full access to the system HDD (e.g., for its own swapping) while Photoshop has concurrent access to its own, separate scratch drive. This way the I/O activity of both doesn't interfere and cause thrashing (lots of seeking, greatly reduced throughput).
What's a "Fusiion HDD"?  I ask because C.P.'s "don't use the system drive for scratch" advice, while right on point with a standard HDD, may not be as pertinent with a drive that has near-SSD performance via an SSD caching scheme.  Since SSDs have near-zero latency (no seeking), and usually quite a lot more throughput capacity than HDDs, it's less important to keep the OS and Photoshop from interferining with one another.
With 24GB of RAM you're probably not having to do a terribly large amount of scratch file writes/reads anyway.  Are you experiencing slowdowns?
