Infinite Hang at 'Setup is Starting...' on K7N2Delta-L

Problem:
Win2K and WinXPSP1 Setups hang indefinately after boot driver setup process.  As soon as driver loading is complete and status on the blue screen switches to 'Starting Windows (2000) Setup' it halts.  No CD spinning, no HDD activity.
Other Symptom of Note:  The system clock does NOT appear to advance at ALL or at extremely slow/unusual pace.  i.e. after time set yesterday, I came back this and it had only advanced 16 minutes.  Does not update when viewed in BIOS.
Analyzation Steps Taken:
* Xferred old HDD's with installed and functioning OS's onto new board -
    1) Win2K - Goes through 'Loading Windows' process and fails at bar 1 of 'Starting up Windows' - Blue Screen STOP! Error - Unaccessable Boot Device 0x0000007B
    2) WinXP - Goes immediately to Blue Screen 'STOP! 0x0000007b (0xF7946640, 0xC0000034, 0,0)
Followed TechNet's resolutions in analyzation steps below - no progress.
* Successfully installed OS's to both HDD's on different machines
* Successfully used all peripherals on different machines (save PNY GeForce52000 AGP vid card - the reason I got the K7 - for ABP8x)
* Was warned that 512DDR333 DIMM may be bad - bought another stick - same issue
* Went to barebones - generic 16x CDR and 1 IDE Maxtor 81GB HDD - same halt
* Used Maxtor boot utilities to Zero format, NTFS for OS (XP and 2000), create ATA133 drivers and diagnostics.  All diagnostics passed, Third Party Drivers were loaded in Windows Setup at F6 Prompt - regardless of format, same error.
* Switched AGP card to old RivaTNT2 32 AGP card and disabled 8x support in BIOS
* Reset BIOS/CMOS via jumper and via battery.
Need some help fixing this issue.

PixelSlinger and others,
Just wondering if you've made any progress on this issue? I'm having the *EXACT SAME PROBLEM* with my new K7N2G-L. Both WinXP and W2K hang during a clean installation. Win98/SE installed fine-- but freezes when I try to upgrade to XP. The XP Hardware compatibility check also hangs.
I've updated to the latest BIOS (3.7) and tried disconnecting everything I possibly can. Removed all peripherals except HDD, CDR and keyboard. Tried installing XP Pro Full, XP Home Upgrade, W2K Full and W98/SE. All but W98 hung at "Setup is starting Windows".
Below are a few things I've read in previous posts that I'm going to try next:
1) Non-ACPI and HAL setup (not sure how this is done).
2) Install from slow CD drive (currently 50x)
3) Remove thermal pad and slop on a bunch of grease instead.
4) Double-check psu (any recommendations to buy?)
5) Use Cable Select settings on HDD/CD not jumpers.
6) Reset CMOS (not sure how this is done either)
7) Disconnect keyboard and mouse during boot.
8 ) Use standard/recommended BIOS settings
9) Try alternate video card (how do I disable on-board vdo)
Have I missed anything? Any suggestions on #1, 4 or 6? I'd appreciate any and all help!! This has really got me stumped.
Thanks!

  • Re-install Windows 7, Hangs at "Setup is Starting"

    Hello,
A little bit of background: last week my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1750) crashed and I was not able to get it to startup. I would get a blue screen with error "unmountable boot volume". Eventually I found that I could access my hard drive to backup
my files by running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS via USB. It is the only way I can fully boot my laptop, any other way (all safe modes, normal boot, repair my computer) will either hang or flash the blue screen and restart. So by using Ubuntu I've backed up all my important
files onto an external hard drive and am ready to do a clean re-installation of Windows (assuming that will fix the problem).
When I insert the operating system disc the files are loaded and I get to select my language etc. and click "Install Now". The next screen that comes up says "Setup is Starting" and the cursor is busy. After leaving that screen for hours,
it doesn't change, and the CD drive doesn't appear to be running
Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you!

You have a hardware problem with you laptop.
Either contact Dell for assistance or take your laptop to a professional computer repair shop to have diagnostics run on it to identify the hardware problem.
Once your system is repaired Windows 7 will install without any problem.

    Dear Friends,
I have a new Fujitsu Desktop pc, Model No is Esprimo P400 E85+. When the open
windows 7 on this computer will come a error message like this " This computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an expected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the computer, and then restart the installation
". and keyboard and mouse also not working that time. That why I cannot access shift+ f10 or registry edit... How can I fix this problem without format Because inside recovery partition . Please help me... I am waiting for your replay
    Advanced thanks for your reply
    Thanks

    Hi,
Did you perofrm a factory reset with the recovery partition? According to your description, the system hangs during the installation, and the keyboard\mouse both malfunction, in this situation, I'm afraid that we need to power off the machine and re-do
the setup. Unplug all external device except keyboard\mouse. By the way, what is the reason that you want to use recovery partition, as
arnavsharma mentioned already, when a system is malfunction, before using the recovery partition, have you tried other recovery options in recovery console, such as Last known good config\startup repair\system restore ? Any result?

  • Acer Laptop stuck at "Setup is Starting Services," can't move on AT ALL!

Hi! I've been having a serious issue with my Acer Aspire (Windows 7) laptop since around 3am last night. Before I go on, please note that I have been searching for solutions before posting this question, and none of what I've found matches my situation and/or
    solves the issue.
    SHORT VERSION:
    Issues:
-"Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation" error window keeps showing up, forcing me to click OK, and restart (causing same error over and over)
-After the above error, and another attempt to restore, this error shows "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows Installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the computer and then the
    installation."
-can't access login screen after continues restarts
-AtBroker.exe and Explorer.exe not running (and probably other important .exe as well?)
-None of the Safe Modes are accessible
    What I've done so far:
-begin restore process (not factory default! the process included backing up my files)
-continuous restart and encounter "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation."
-F8 to start the "Last known good configuration," just led me back to the current issue.
-F8 to boot in Directory Services Restore Mode, went back to trying to install in Safe Mode, forced me to restart.
-F8 to disable automatic restart (failed and made me restart anyway)
-F8 to "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"... also failed
NOTHING I've done has made any advancement past the "Setup is starting services."
    LONG VERSION
Last night, I was installing a new theme on my laptop (from a 3rd party on deviantart, but I was carefully following instructions to not mess anything up, using theme manager. however it's probably the reason for the issue) and everything was going well.
i had to restart occasionally to make sure the themes worked but on my final restart (after I decided I preferred a previous theme), everything went wrong! After logging in, the screen turned gray (it'd probably be black for others, but mine was gray maybe
due to the theme) and the cursor was there just flickering. And this continued for about 10 minutes before I tried opening task manager but that failed (said the .exe wouldn't start properly) so I shut it down (through ctrl+alt+del) and restarted.
Still same issue, but this time it said that AtBroker.exe and then explorer.exe were unable to run properly, preventing me from even seeing my desktop.
So today when I got home, I ended up going through the Acer eRecovery Management and doing a system restore (but it would keep my files, just restore the settings to how they were when my parents bought the laptop (summer-ish 2011)). It took a while and
it looked promising. Eventually, it took me to the screen with the Windows logo, then to a screen that said "setup is starting services"). And it gave me an error that it couldn't continue installation so it had to restart, so I clicked OK. It happened
again. Clicked OK and repeated that 2 more times until I got fed up. I just want to skip around that installation and try to access my desktop or at least Command Prompt but it won't let me get any further without making me restart (by clicking OK). I also
do not recall any disk when my dad set my laptop up but this was 2 years ago. I can't find one either, so I assumed Windows 7 came with it?
I really don't know what to do! Nor am I really tech savvy when it comes to fixing this kind of computer problem, so if anyone has any solutions, I wouldn't really know a lot of terms that would be important to know when it comes to fixing this issue. Hopefully,
someone can explain what's happening and how I can fix it fairly simply.
    Thanks!
    Olivia

    Hi Olivia,
Thanks for your structured and logical description.
It sounds really serious. According to my understanding, you can't start your computer normally.

After the assembly of the above parts, I loaded xp-64 with no problems.  However, contrary to what MS states, not all applications that run on xp-pro run on xp-64 so I attempted to load xp-pro.  I did get it to load once and upgraded the bios from 1.1 to 1.4.  I re-partitioned & reformated the drive and attempted to start over.  I did get it to load once but there were driver errors related to the NVIDIA chipset.  When I attempted to use live update to update the drivers, I got errors and the OS failed.  After re-partitioning & reformating the drive, attempts to load XP Pro failed as it hung on "Setup is starting Windows".  Online tech support recommended trying 1 of the sticks of ram, then the other which didn't resolve the problem.  Then they suggested that I RMA it.  As it took longer than my friend was willing to wait, I purchased another board (new bios) and it hangs on "Setup is starting Windows".  MS lists this as a driver problem.  Any suggestions as to what I might be missing?

Same problems whether RAID is disabled or enabled.
I'm going to try an IDE drive today though I don't understand how that will help with the drive/chipset issues that were experienced the one time that I did get it to load.
I also don't understand why XP-64 loads without problems while XP Pro doesn't when according to MSI, either OS should work with this system.
According to Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310760) when loading XP on a system results in the system hanging at "setup is starting windows"
An incorrect mass-storage device (such as a SCSI or IDE controller) driver is being loaded, or the driver was not written for Windows and is not compatible. Contact the device's manufacturer or download the latest driver for the mass-storage device.
(I used the drivers on the FD included with the MB.)
There is a device connected to your mass-storage device that is preventing Windows from being installed. Remove any devices (such as scanners, tape drives, removable drives, and so on) from the mass-storage device controller. If the computer is IDE-based, verify that you have the master and slave designations set properly. If the mass-storage controller is SCSI-based, verify that the termination and bus speed is set properly.
(Only "devices connected are the SATA HD, CD & DVD which are jumpered properly correctly, PS2 KB & MS.)
The computer does not have the latest BIOS revision. Contact the computer's manufacturer or check the manufacturer's Web site. Many manufacturers have updated their BIOS revisions to properly support Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI).
(The first MB was 1.1 which I did flash the 1 time that I was able to load XP Pro.  The second board has 1.4.)
An ACPI Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is being used during Setup. Force the use of a non-ACPI HAL during Setup.

  • Windows 7 Install is stuck at "Setup is Starting"

    Hi,
I am attempting to install windows 7 x64 onto my pc and it hangs at the "Setup is Starting..." screen.  I waited for the screen to go away overnight but to no avail.
    My system's specs are:
    Phenom II x3 720 be
MSI 790GX-G65 Motherboard with integrated video and the latest bios
2 Gigs of ram (going to expand to 6)
640 gig Seagate sata hard drive in IDE mode
firewire and integrated audio have been disabled
usb enabled but usb compatibility mode disabled
no floppy drive and it has been disabled
    onboard lan has been disabled
There was an instance where the installation got past that screen and asked me to choose a drive to install but none were selectable.  I used seagates utility to set up the drive with ntfs but that didn't solve the issue.  Is there anything else that I should try?

Which DVD ROM are you using, also check the following thread where the installation process was very slow and
some changes in the BIOS related to HyperTransport solved the problem.
Your being the new Phenom II cpu, cannot say if this option is there in bios or not, just give it a try....

  • How do I prevent my Mac Pro from  hanging up in a start/stop loop?

My Mac Pro has a strange behavior I need help with. This computer is used almost exclusively for audio recording in my studio. I run Cubase 4 as my primary sequencing software. Everything will be going fine during a session, and then the software will abruptly hang up in a *start/stop loop*, stuttering back and forth between these two functions for up to 2 minutes before stopping. During this loop problem, the start/stop transport buttons alternately light up and the song starts and stops. Nothing I have tried will interrupt the problem. It just runs its course and then stops, usually between 30 - 90 seconds.
Interestingly, the same behavior shows up in other applications and in the Finder. In Quicktime and iTunes, it shows up as a start/stop loop. In the finder, it will shuttle back and forth between two related functions and beep each time. In word, it will show up as a key stick, typing the same letter over and over.
Needless to say, this is all very frustrating and embarrassing when clients are here. Any help will be greatly appreciates. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I'd begin with repairing your drives with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior; clone your system to another drive, and check for corrupt files and prefs.

  • Stuck on "Setup is starting windows"

Been at this for 3 days, no one at Apple support has encountered my problem, and haven't found a solution anywhere on the net. Here is the scenario:
Computer is a new iMac 20" 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB RAM, and using the included Boot Camp Assistant 2.0 that cam pre-installed.
After running Boot Camp, I chose to partition 32GB for the Windows installation. I have tried with 2 original personally purchased Microsoft authentic CDs (Microsoft just sent me the SP3 a few days ago). One is a new Windows XP Home Edition OEM Service Pack 3, the other is the same but Service Pack 2. Once Boot Camp prompts to insert the CD and I click to install, the iMac restarts, and I get the Windows Setup blue screen. Along the bottom I see how it starts loading all the preliminary drivers needed for installation, and then... and then.... "Setup is starting Windows" across the bottom white strip, and that's the end of it. I hear the CD stop spinning after 30 seconds, and nothing ever happens after that. No next screen to choose which partition to format or anything.
Both discs are in perfect conditions, no scratches or smudges or dirt. I tried using the newer SP3 disc on an older PC I have to see if it would reformat and re-install Windows on it and it worked perfectly. I didn't authenticate it since it will be probably scrapped later anyhow. So the disc works fine. A tech at Apple phone support advised me to try unplugging everything except the keyboard and mouse, that didn't work either.
I'm exhausted, and really have tried all my previous tech experience at no avail. Any kind sould who can actually respond with a workable solution will be greatly appreciated.

    SOLVED
Well, I'd like to thank all of you for your input. After much prayer and extensive search, I was finally able to install Windows XP SP3 on the new iMac. I kept the 32GB partition created by Boot Camp 2.0, but I did 2 things differently when trying to do it this time. The apple keyboard (since it is so short, really Apple, you had a usable length with the Pro models 10 years ago) was connected to a 6 foot USB extension cable to reach the back of the monitor. This is because the iMac is on a computer desk with a pull-out desk to place the keyboard and mouse. But I disconnected the extension, and plugged it direct this time. I didn't leave the Windows XP SP3 disc in this time, I just restarted, and while it restarted I pressed and held the OPTION key. An icon of just the "Macintosh HD" came up on the screen, at which time I inserted the Windows CD, a few seconds later, an icon for the CD appeared to the right of the Mac HD icon. I selected the CD, and again it went through loading drivers getting ready for windows setup, same as before. I cried out to the Lord, and YESSSSSSSSS, it finally asked me if I wanted to format a windows partition! Needless to say, it went through the entire process fine.
I didn't need to update to Boot Camp 2.1, sp3 is working fine. Installed and ran a few programs, connected to the internet, and so forth. Although I left the network connection to the internet disabled, don't want to use the Windows side for the net, too many virus problems possible.
I shut down the computer, re-connected the USB extension cable, and when I went into the Windows side, guess what? The mouse and keyboard locked up completely. I connected the apple keyboard direct again, and then I had control again. Using the USB extension cable on the Windows side is the only problem, because the Mac side works fine with it. This will be a new post because I really need the extra length because of the distance. But thanks to all.

Well it hung again even after uninstalling and installing tempro.
I decided to unistall it completely as hoped this would stop it freezing up but it didn't.
Today it froze as per usual but when I checked the problem reporting there was not a report nor did it give me any information as to why it froze again today.
Totally at a loss as to why this is happening, and how can it be fixed if there is no reason given for it freezing???

  • Hangs on "RAID controller starting up..."

I have an older Xserve RAID; we just restarted it, and, when booting back up, the lower controller never starts; it just hangs on "RAID controller starting up...". The upper controller works fine.
I found this thread, but there's no solution arrived at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1745169&tstart=15
I've tried reseating the controller. I've tried resetting it with a "CD extraction tool" (a.k.a., a straightened paper clip). I've tried removing all the drives on the right-hand side (controlled by the lower controller). None of those things had any effect.
Is it time to bite the bullet and buy a new controller? Or is there something else I can do?

Are the drives offline and thus unreachable? If you can access the drives, then the RAID controller is online and you just have an IP issue.
Are you sure it didn't just flip the IP address somehow?
