Infinity Alternative Routers and/or escalation of ...

Hi all,
I've posted a few times over the last month or so about similar issues, but am hoping for a definitive guide.
I have BT Infinity 2, with speeds of up to 80 meg. I get a perfect wired connection and have no complaints. Wireless, I was getting maybe 5 meg at most. I bought the BT Wi-Fi Home Hotspot kit, which improved the speed up to between 10 and 20 meg at most wirelessly.
I am in a small apartment and there are only stud walls between me and my router. The real distance is only maybe fifteen-twenty feet at most, but I still can't get a better wireless speed.
I've phoned BT a few times, but everytime it's back to square one - there's lots of testing and then a wait of at least 5-10 days to train the line. They've been very helpful, but ultimately say that as the wired speed is there, they can't go any further.
So, on to my questions. I know BT aren't legally required to give me a certain wireless speed. Despite this, could I in any way escalate this to try and push for better wireless speeds? I ask this, but I'm not too hopeful (not least cause I don't know what they could do). Does my ping latency have anything to do with this? It's usually between 40ms and 60ms. Or is this not an issue?
My second question is regarding alternative routers. Before I invest another bunch of money (like I did in the Wi-Fi boosters), I'd like a decent opinion on whether an alternative router would really improve the wireless speed.
For example, would any of these routers be likely to provide a boost:
D-Link DIR-845L
Netgear WNDR4300
Asus RT-AC68U AC1900
Linksys EA6700 
Or am I asking a question that just can't be reliably answered?

You could try changing wireless channel, to see if it helps?
What are powerline devices and how do they work?
BT do have their own such devices.

These extend the physical Ethernet interface from the home hub, to the computer`s LAN interface, so you turn the wireless off on the computer.
There are other devices in the Connected Home range which may also help.

        Thanks for the topology. The trigger will be different for labelled  packet as you would need to mention the values of labels too in the  trigger.
         Below are two examples of one or two labels being  used, it depends on where you are capturing the packet in mplsvpn  scenario which will decide teh number of labels being imposed on the  packet.
    Trigger for one label. (if the router on which you are capturing the packet PHP is being performed)
    VPN label - 5678

        You can check the labels being used (by using show ip cef <> details) and covert their values to hex and change the trigger accordingly.
         I have changed the colors for better understanding. If you notice carefully in the trigger the values for ip address, labels have just been converted to their respective hex values which could be replaced.

  • How to protect a PIM-SM network from unauthorized pim routers and multicast sources?

    Hi,
    we're using pim sparse mode in a customer network with catalyst 2/3/4/6K switches, all multicast routers are redundant with pim dr running for access subnets. RPs are configured with anycast rp.
    A) Is there any possiblity to prevent rogue pim routers/igmp queriers connected to host ports from getting connected to the legal pim routers and from getting involved in the local igmp traffic?
    Maybe like DHCP Snooping used with DHCP. I read that in the latest Sup2T ios (http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/15-2SY/config_guide/sup2T/15_2_sy_swcg_2T.pdf) there is a feature called 'ipv4 router guard' which does exactly what we're looking for:
    'When configured, the Router Guard feature makes the specified port a host port only. The port is prevented from becoming a router port, even if a multicast router control packets are received. In addition, any control packets normally received from multicast routers, such as IGMP queries and PIM joins, will also be discarded by this filter.'
    Afaik, PIM authentication isn't supported in current catalyst ios versions.
    Using a normal port ACL is not an option in our case because of a management decision.
    B) Is there any possibility to prevent (on a per-subnet basis) rogue sources from sending multicast streams to legal multicast-groups?
    Maybe, can I configure a svi of a host subnet or a host port to drop any incoming multicast stream while still accepting IGMP and sending out legal multicast streams?
    Using 'ip pim accept-register' command on the rp is not an option because we've tons of legal sources which would end in an very huge error-prone acl
    Unfortunately, a normal ACL is not an option here, too.

    We use two pim routers in each host subnet for redundancy, they elect the PIM DR.
    Does pim passive mode work here?
    (Config Guide: If the ip pim passive command is configured on an interface enabled for IP multicast, the router will operate this interface in PIM passive mode, which means that the router will not send PIM messages on the interface nor will it accept PIM messages from other routers across this interface. The router will instead consider that it is the only PIM router on the network and thus act as the DR and also as the DF for all bidir-PIM group ranges. IGMP operations are unaffected by this command. ... The redundant PIM stub router topology is not supported. The redundant topology exists when there is more than one PIM router forwarding multicast traffic to a single access domain. PIM messages are blocked, and the PIM asset and designated router election mechanisms are not supported on the PIM passive interfaces.)
    ip pim neighbor-filter maybe would work to prevent rogue pim routers to connect to the legal pim routers but wouldn't rogue pim routers still be able to manipulate the layer2 switch to send all igmp traffic to them and not to the legal pim routers?

  • Multiple routers and subnets - can't access across subnets

    Hey all, I'm having an issue with multiple routers and subnets on my FIOS connection. Here's how everything is setup:
    Primary router:
    ActionTec MI424WR Rev D (from Verizon)
    WAN IP: From ISP
    WAN NETMASK: From ISP
    LAN IP: 192.168.1.1LAN NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
    Secondary router (WAN connected to ActionTec LAN):
    Belkin N750 gigabit w/ 802.11n
    WAN IP: 192.168.1.2
    WAN NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP: 192.168.2.1
    LAN NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
    With this setup, I have the secondary router's WAN port connected to a LAN port on the primary router. Each are broadcasting an SSID and each are running DHCP to assign address to their respective subnets. Everything was well and good, except that I could reach 192.168.1.* systems from 192.168.2.*, but not vice versa -- anything connected to the Primary router was blind to systems connected to Secondary. Also, I could not ping anything on .2 from .1.
    So, I added the following static route to the primary router:
    DESTINATION: 192.168.2.0
    NETMASK: 255.255.255.0
    GATEWAY: 192.168.1.2
    Once this was added to the router, I could ping everything, so that was good. However, even though .1 can now ping .2, I can't access certain things such as the web interface of my NAS (192.168.2.2). I can ping it, but accessing it in the browser from .1 doesn't work; however, accessing from .2 does work.
    I think the ActionTec router might be blocking it, but that's just a guess. The firewall on this thing has me thoroughly confused. Currently, I have 192.168.1.2 in the DMZ on the ActionTec, but that didn't make a difference. I've also completely disabled the firewall on the secondary Belkin router, but still nothing.
    Any help from the pros here? Much appreciated!

    Ok, I figured it out and everything is now working. The issue appears to be that the ActionTec router doesn't recognize traffic from Subnet 1 to Subnet 2 as internal traffic -- it treats it as external traffic and closes it off. To fix this, it required some Advanced Firewall Filters that were far from unituitive and took a lot of testing to get it just right. If anyone runs into a similar situation in the future, here's a rundown of what I did to make it all work:
    Primary Router:
    ActionTec, MI424WR Rev D
    WAN IP/NETMASK:Assigned by ISP
    LAN IP/NETMASK:192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
    Secondary Router:
    Belkin N750 Gigabit w/ 802.11n
    WAN IP/NETMASK:192.168.1.2 / 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP/NETMASK:192.168.2.1 / 255.255.255.0
    Plug Secondary router's WAN port into a LAN port on the Primary router.
    Setup Secondary router to have static LAN address (192.168.1.2)
    At this point, you should have 2 separate subnets: Subnet 1 (192.168.1.*) and Subnet 2 (192.168.2.*).
    Systems on both subnets should be able to reach the internet. Also, Subnet 2 should be able to ping and reach systems on Subnet 1; however, systems on Subnet 1 should not be able to ping or reach systems on Subnet 2. For this, we need to create a static route so Subnet 1 can reach Subnet 2.
    Create and apply the following static route in the Primary router:  (Advanced > Routing)
    RULE NAME:Network (Home/Office)
    DESTINATION:192.168.2.0(your secondary subnet)
    GATEWAY:192.168.1.2(secondary router's WAN IP)
    NETMASK:255.255.255.0
    METRIC:1
    The router now has a route between Subnet 1 (192.168.1.*) and Subnet 2 (192.168.2.*). You should be able to ping systems on Subnet 1 from 2, and ping systems on Subnet 2 from 1. You should not be able to access any systems, though -- the firewall is still blocking all but ping traffic from Subnet 1 to Subnet 2. We need to create some firewall rules to allow this communication.
    Make sure Primary firewall is set to at least typical/medium (Firewall Settings > General).
    We need to create some network objects to make it easier to manage the rules we'll create. Go to Advanced > Network Objects and do the following:
    1.Click Add. You are now on Edit Network Object screen. 
    2.Set Description to 'Subnet 1'.
    3.In Items section below, click Add.
    4.Set Network Object Type to 'IP Subnet'.
    5.Set Subnet IP Address to 192.168.1.0.
    6.Set Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
    7.Click Apply. You are now back on Edit Network Object screen.
    8.Click Apply. You are now back on Network Objects Screen.
    9.Repeat the above steps again, but this time creating a second network object called 'Subnet 2':
    Nameubnet 2
    IP Subnet:192.168.2.0
    Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
    Now we create the firewall rules. Go to Firewall Settings > Advanced Filtering.
    In the Inbound/Input rules section, click the Add link next to Network (Home/Office) Rules.
    Create the following Advanced Filter:
    SOURCE ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 1'
    DEST. ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 2'
    PROTOCOL:'Any'
    OPERATION:'Accept Packet'
    OCCUR:'Always'
    Click Apply. You will now be back on the Advanced Filtering page.
    In the Outbound rules section, click the Add link next to Network (Home/Office) Rules.
    Create the following Advanced Filter:
    SOURCE ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 1'
    DEST. ADDRESSelect 'Subnet 2'
    PROTOCOL:'Any'
    OPERATION:'Accept Packet'
    OCCUR:'Always'
    Click Apply. You will now be back on the Advanced Filtering page.
    Click Apply.
    You're all done. You should now have internet access on both subnets, be able to ping across subnets and also be able to access services across subnets (local webservers, SSH, telnet, mail, etc). You will not be able to see network file shares across subnets in Windows, however, as this requires a WINS server (which is well outside the scope of this post). For instance, I have a Western Digital NAS on the 192.168.2.0 subnet that I can access as \\Mybooklive\ from within Subnet 2; on Subnet 1, however, I have to access it by its IP \\192.168.2.10\.

  • My power PC iMac will not start, I get a file picture with an alternating ? and face. What can I do to get the computer to start?

    My wife and nephew were trying to down load some pictures from his digital camera. When they plugged the card reader into the bus to read the digital camera card it wouldn't work. Now when I turn on the imac all I get is an picture of a small file with an alternating "?" and apple face. How do I get the imac to start up?

    Do you have reliable backup you can restore from, as an erase and re-install may be required?
    Before you got down that route, it's possible that it might get fixed if you try again. Not sure about that particular error, but I have had errors in the past that Disk Utility wouldn't fix on the first attempt but then subsequently did.
    It's also possible that the (around $99, I think) Disk Warrior might resolve it - but not guaranteed.
    However, I just found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3862376?start=15&tstart=0 have a look at Nirvi's post at the end - there may be hope (I've not tried this, although it seems to have helped a few, although not everybody - so at your own risk and I wouldn't try it if I didn't have backup).

    I am investigating the difference of the IEEE802.1x Auth between Routers and Switches.
    Basically dot1x auth is availlable on Catalyst Switches. however if I want to check to
    PortBased Multi-Auth , MAC address Auth and any certification Auth with this feature,
    Is it possible to integrate into Cisco Router such as Cisco 891F ?
    In my opinion Cisco891F is also available to use basic IEEE802.1x but if it compares with Catalyst switches such as Cat3560X
    I think there might be any unsupported feature on Cisco 891F.

    Many time in interviews asked comaprison between cisco  routers and switches that i was answerless bcoz i dont have much knowledge about that.Can anyone provide me the compariosin sheet of the same.how are the cisco devices differ with each other how much Bandwidth each routres support and Etc...
    Ummmm ... The most common question I get is "what is the difference between a router and a switch".
    However, if you get a question like this, then my impression to this line of questioning are:
    1.  The candidate they are looking for has in-depth knowledge of routers and switches.  And I mean IN-DEPTH!;
    2.  They are not looking for a candidate.  They just want to stroke their ego.  There is not alot of people who can give you the "names and numbers" of routers and switches at a snap of a finger.  And if you do happen to know the answer, then and there, then expect a tougher follow-up question. 

  • Unable to Add alternative text and tooltips to your images

    Hello,
    I am using Muse CC in Apple iMAC machine.  The build version of Muse CC is 232. 
    Having watched the video, http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-adobe-muse-cc/using-titles-and-alt-text-to-images/, I am unable to bring up the image property window when I press the right hand click button of my Apple Mouse. 
    As such, I am unable to add alternative text and IMG Text to my images including the logo, facebook and Twitter Logos. 
    Can someone please tell me how to resolve my issue?  How come I unable to bring up the image property when I press the right hand click on the mouse.  The image property is also not shown in the menu of Muse CC.

    Hello Maxplus,
    Try doing CTRL+Click once to see if it works. Also, if an image is added as a fill, it doesn't bring up the Add alternative text and tooltips option, because then it is added as a background and not placed as an image.

  • For all those with D-Link routers and problems with iTunes dropping AppleTV

    My setup: Custom built WinXP PC with iTunes 7.6.2. Apple TV w/Take 2. D-link DI-624 wireless N router, wired to the PC, wireless to the aTV.
    I have an intersting phenomenon occuring with my Apple TV. I can sync the aTV to my PC and it works fine, but the first time we receive a phone call on our VOIP phone, the router drops the ATV connection to the PC. aTV still has internet connectivity, but iTunes on the PC cannot see the aTV, and I cannot sync.
    A search yielded gobs of folks with D-link routers and iTunes/AppleTV connection issues. I just won an Airport Extreme router off ebay...as soon as I have a chance to test it out I will post back in this thread as to the results.
    I know folks don't like the solution to be "spend more money", but I think it would be worth it to a lot of people if they knew a different router would solve their issues (rather than continuing to guess or throw money at the problem randomly).

    I have a WinXP PC and a Linksys G class router. I am on Comcast broadband cable. Both ATV and PC are on wireless link. And I have tried a borrowed Apple Airport router (G class). That didn't help resolve this problem so far. I don't think it is a router issue as you will see that many folks on this forum have the same problem with a wide mix of environments. Many of them are on pure Apple components and so one cannot blame Microsoft and non-Apple devices.
    Having said this, I hope the new router resolves your issues. In my case, the only option left is to keep calling Apple Care.

  • What does a folder with alternating ? and finder icons mean?

    After booting my G5, it now goes to a blue screen containing a solitary folder in the center with alternating "?" and "finder" icons in the center of it. They flash for approximately 22 times, stop on the "finder" icon briefly, then start up again. I was told that this is a sign that my hard drive was 'fried'. Can anyone verify this--or perhaps give me other information on what might be occurring. All I want to do is reformat my hard drive and give the unit to my grandkids for researching, word processing, etc.--as it is only running Tiger 10.4.11.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the information, Chris. I did run disk one of the system install, buy it would not take me to the hard drive in the G5--only gave me an icon for a remote(online) startup. Any other suggestion as I tried resetting the PRAM and the SMU--both of which did basically anything new?

  • Time and date are set incorrectly on the routers and switches

    I've just noticed that the date and time on all my Cat4006's, Cat3548's and Cat6000 were grossly incorrect. I was wondering if this would contribute to problems I am having on the network. Does the switches/routers check the timestamp on the packets it's passing and/or append or add thereto?

    Date and time set on routers and swithces will not affect your user data traffic.
    Keeping Date and time synchronized across network devies will help if you are troubleshooting your network.
    If you need to keep date and time synchronized across all the network devices, use NTP (Network Time Protocol)

  • Alternating light and dark blue screen on trying to start up

    Today, on trying to restart after an Intego VirusBarrier update, I got stuck with just a blank blue screen alternating light and dark. I still can't restart on my internal drive, but after starting up from the install disc have managed to restart from a cloned OS 10.5.5 on my external drive. When I try to restart from the internal drive I just get the alternating shades of blue screen and nothing else - no error message, no question mark, just the pulsating blue screen - HELP!!!!

    Thanks but that wasn't it. I replaced the battery and reset the PMU, still no luck. I've tried hooking up an external monitor still nothing, in doing all of this the person helping and I noticed that when you push the button on front to power up it doesn't light but I'm also not getting a start up chime, only the click of the hard drive then in pushing the button to power it off the light will blink and I think it is shutting down. Any other suggestions.

  • Slow network speed after connecting to routers and switch

    The following is my test setup I have running at my house for some practice and leaning
    Some reason the PC1 which is a laptop is getting very horrid internet / download speeds, and I am trying to narrow down why.
    Example, on my main desktop that is connected right to the Arris Cable modem / router I get around 34Mbps down.  But the laptop that is connected in the topology above, is getting 0.06 Mbps down
    I am not sure if there are settings that need to be checked on the routers or what could cause this, I am figuring the traffic is bogging at some place.

    Update on some things I have tried
    As I am not sure the cause, I have been reading and trying different things, last thing was to set the interfaces to Duplex Full
    I did this on both the Ethernet ports on the routers, and both of the Fast Ethernet ports being used on the switch, but has not changed the speed that PC1 is getting.
    Also turned on CEF on both routers

    Hi Mitch,
    It depends on what CTM profile you are using. 1) Bucket based or 2) Time continuous.
    1) Bucket based : You will have to use SNP PDS and SNP PDS do not support alternative modes.
    Alternative resources are not supported at all in SNP. 
    As an alternative, You can use the BAdi /SAPAPO/CURTO_SNP with CIF_IMPORT parameter to create multiple PDSes in case there is alternative resource in routing/recipe.
    2) TIme continuous: You will use CTM PDS.
    PPDS PDS supports alternative resources. I am entirely not sure about CTM PDS.
    I will check out, if I can find out.
    Which CTM profile you are using?
