Infinity and online gaming

Hello
I am relativly new to infinity and was wondering if anyone could tell me why its so bad for online gaming?
My download speeds are virtually always 37.5mb download and between 8 - 9mb upload although upload drops sometmimes to slightly lower

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1333920583&v=15486955
however i always get loads of lag when playing on xbox live, to the point it is not worth playing, it gets worse than when I was on normal copper wire broadband.
I have also noticed that there is quite a delay before web pages open when browsing the internet in general, my ping used to be pretty consistent at around 17 - 20ms before I switched to infininty but now seems to jump around lot even going as high as 300ms on occasion.
my line profile seems to have set at 38.10mb which I am happy with, and the engineer who installed my infinity said that my line stats were excellent.
all this said then why do i seem to be suffering when using xbox live??

Hi Cameron
No I have been trying it with the wireless disabled, although on our old connection this wasnt an issues, myself and my son could both use our xboxs together on the one connection and still it was better than at presen
I didnt have the cable in the gigabyte port, I have now though, what does this port do?
Yes port forwarding set to xbox live

  • BT Infinity and online gaming - has BT changed tra...

We use our internet a great deal for online gaming and a few months ago on our old ISP games started to become unplayable due to extremely slow response times. After a great deal of investigation I discovered the reason for this...
Some ISPs examine the sort of data being transferred and when they think the data is Peer-To-Peer traffic they place this in a low-priority queue.  Historically, most people didn't care as 99% of P2P traffic was illegal file-sharing.
BUT, online games are increasingly making use of data packet formats that 'look' like P2P traffic.  The gaming data is incorrectly identified as being P2P file-sharing and placed in a low priority queue.  This makes online gaming, where responses need to be made in fractions of seconds impossible - you often just stand still for 5 seconds while the rest of the world moves on.
This is what happened with our old ISP and why we looked around for a new provider. Infinity recently came to our area and while browsing the Infinity information on the BT site I was asked if I wanted to speak to a customer service rep.  I wasn't expecting a very helpful discussion, but figured it couldn't do any harm to ask a very specific question:  "Do you perform traffic-shaping on P2P traffic?" -  the rep went away to find out and then responded "BT never shape P2P traffic".  (I have screenshots of this conversation as it formed the basis of my decision to subscribe to Infinity).
Flash forward a month.  We have Infinity and have been very pleased with it ..until tonight when the same problems started again.
Several speed-test sites report pings about 20ms, download speeds of 30-40mpbs  - all very nice, same it has been for the past month.
BUT, tonight all online gaming has ground to a halt.
Typical pings reported in games like World of Warcraft have gone from 50-100ms to about 3000-5000s.
Online chatter is FULL of people asking if anyone else is having problems; and yes, the ones I've spoken to are all on BT.
    So -
Have BT changed their policy ?
Are they now aggressively shaping traffic it thinks is P2P-related ?
Are the problems tonight related to a temporary glitch or a permanent change in policy ?
I'd really like to know as I've still got proof of BT's answer to a direct and specific question about this sort of policy and if it's changed will need to change ISPs and reclaim setup costs.
Any information from anyone who knows about this would be most welcome.

    Hi ge1971,
Welcome to the forums I'm sorry to hear of the problems you're having. I've posted an update on this issue here, so if you could keep an eye on that thread hopefully I'll have more info soon.

  • NBN Wireless and online gaming

Is the wireless nbn good for gaming online or does it being wireless drop out randomly at times?

It is designed to be as resistant as it can be, but the right (or really the wrong) conditions may cause issues to occur, but it should be fairly minimal... At least in the cases I know of and the information the communications department and NBN have released all suggest that interference is quite minimal. Just worth noting that it can happen. Particularly in heavy fog is the main case I have heard of from users of NBN-FW

  • Is BT Infinity good for Online Gaming...?

I see many people on coming on complaining that they are getting many disconenctions, lag, high ping rates etc...which leads me to my question, Is BT Infinity good for online gaming?

I came to infinity from VirginMedia where jitter is awful and your TBB graph would be full of yellow! On infinity my jitter is pretty much non existent and latency is very low.

  • OK WHATS THE BEST MOTHERBOARD AND CPU FOR ONLINE GAMING

Here i go again thinking about stepping up on motherboaerds and cpus! If you have an opinion on which would make the best online gaming setup let me here you hollor! I will only go with intel so all amd lovers  dont bother!

He's better off with a Q6600 over the E6850, because you can clock the Q6600 to QX6850 speeds and it's quad core, so future proof anyway.
    And the Q6600 costs less.
However the CPU will be very limited by that 7900GT.
    A 8800GTX or HD2900XT would be a better choice.
EDIT: Get a G0 stepping Q6600, they have a lower TDP of 95w and require less voltage.

  • PANTECH UML290 DOESNT WORK FOR ONLINE GAMING PLSE HELP!!!

my modem is Pantech UML290     .i  notice cannot play any online games...my old 3g modem works perfectly with the same games but this new service as far as online games or this modem apparently has issues...i have had nothing but problems, high ping rates and packet loss as well as jitter and no one with the exception of 1 service tech apparently cares  TECH DID A PING TEST AT ADRESS  ping -a 66.174.92.14  result were request timed out 4 times, packets sent=4 packets recieved=0  pakets loss = 4 , total= 100% loss, funny thing is i was still connected to internet  and if you ping google.com 0 paket loss...  apparently consistancy or server recognition might be a problem i dont know...maybe modem is bad...either way i cannot play any online games what so ever, when tested at speed test.com and pingtest.com states high ping and high jitter as well as packet loss, no one seems to have an answer for this  note!! on old 3g device i had played these same online games without any problems...so this 4g modem and service advertises online gaming and steady streaming and i cannot do neither why???  someone plse help!!!  also if you look under vz access manager statistics tab, you will see transfer and recieve rates like a heart beat monitor....it consistantly goes up and down like a heart beat instead of a steady flow, goes up as high as 10mbs then drops for a while to 0kbs and stays their for a lil bit...it apparently is loosing communications....old 3g device was a steady transfer flow rate that never dropped to 0 unless i wasnt doing anything...so why is this as well?

have'nt had any phone call's today regarding the slow down of my BT infinity broadband line.. in the last 3 hours have been online on both the PS3 & the XBOX and the problem is still there... im host in every online game i play but each game is almost unplayable every time..the actual game i play as host on the PS3 runs really slow (only as host) and looking left/right has a blurry feel to it.. on the XBOX its running slightly quicker but still nowhere like it does on both consoles when im not hosting.. when ever everybody else hosts a game that i join, after speaking to them they have had no problem what so ever.. most seem to be on a cable ISP but the speed stats are very simular to mine.. just the hosting is totally different for me...???
    http://speedtest.net/result/1586999761.png
    http://www.pingtest.net/result/50309878.png
just tested my speed with the above score... i still cant work out why my line is being slowed down ....
just reiterate that my g/f works from home mon-fri 8am-5pm on a live server including emails etc... the live server would involve being logged on all day checking accounts including various stock levels etc.. so she is very busy pretty much every day..
im online with my PS3/XBOX prob a couple of nights a week plus as i do shift work,on my days off i play COD most of them days .. so prob around 40/50 hours a week playing online depending..
i chose option 2 BT Infinty unlimited because i new i needed a very good line with all mine and my g/fs needs..

  • WRT54G - Online Gaming Problem

I have been trying for almost a year trying to get online gaming to work with my router. I've been trying to play Age of Empires 2. I've done about anything and everything to get myself about play. I know it's my router as when I connect my computer directly to the modem, it works and I'm able to play online. I can never see the room when I use my router. My router is a WRT54G v2.2. It's been upgraded to the latest firmware which is one of the things I tried with no luck. I have tried port forwarding, but it didn't work. I followed this website exactly and tried it more than once: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/Age_of_Empires_II.htm But no luck... I also even tried to enable DMZ, but no luck either. I tried Hamachi too. We're able to connect and all, but nothing either. I don't know what's wrong, but if anyone can help, I will appreciate it greatly. However, maybe I did something wrong with port forwarding. You never know, but most likely not. Still...

  • What Mac product is best for online gaming?

I purchased a MacBook Pro for my daughter & she loves it. She was a little disappointed that she couldn't play some of her online games because the web browser wasn't compatible. Other than that she had no complaints.
Is there a software that's needed in order to play online games? I'm not sure I want to purchase a Mac Desktop for the family & have issues with online gaming.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Well for browser based games you likely have to install Firefox and the Flash browser plugin, they are likely not accepting Safari in particular because of it's small market share.
Firefox, Chrome and IE they have to support.
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
    https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Online gamming tend to mean heavy duty 3D games that are competitive, require a very powerful video card etc. for that really no Mac is ideal, a Windows 7 3D gaming tower is a more preferred option as the video cards can be upgraded.
Sure one can play offline 3D games well on a Mac, but that's not as much fun as online competitive gaming is.
For that you might want to consider a PlayStation 3 for lower cost, easier to use larger screen (HDTV) and a level playing field in hardware.

  • G5 as a Server for Online Gaming?

I am curious as to if a G5 can be used for a Server for Online Gaming prior to my going out and purchasing one. I am new to Apple computers and would like to know if i bought the Full Upgraded version.. would the game work and be able to handle the amount of gamers that play the game.. (currently approximately 200-300 players at any given time)
    thank you for the assistance...

Yes it certainly can but which online games have
server versions that run on a G5?
Maybe i didnt explain it better... I want to use my G5 to be the HOST server for the online game.. is "this" possible??

  • Mac mini and Logitech gaming headset

I have a 2008 Mac Mini running 10.6.4 and I want to use a Logitech headset for online gaming but I can not make the microphone work. The output works fine, but the input wont register at all. The mic uses two standard jacks, one for input and one for output and they are connected directly to the back of the mini but it get no recognition that a mic is attached at all.
Anyone know how to get the mini to recognize the mic?

The line should be the mic option assuming you have a line in and a line out connection on the back of the Mini and the sound out and mic in connectors are plugged in to the right connections.
I have a USB camera with built in mic ( Playstation Eye ) connected to one of the USB ports which I use for the mic and it shows up below line in in the settings so I don't use the line in unfortunately.
The line in is meant to be the mic input. I have a late 2009 Mini and it has a line in and a line out as in the picture in the link below. Is yours the same ?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3478
Having looked at the specs on that page again it seems as if the line in may not support mics after all. The other option would be to get a USB adapter with a female line in and line out and connect the headset to one of the USB ports as this should work. I've done just that on my MacBook Air which is running 10.6.3.
The Playstation Eye on my Mini is connected the same way. If you can't find an adapter for your existing headset then you might need to consider buying a new one that does have USB as an option.

  • Low ping yet online gaming performs poorly

This has always been an issue with my BT ADSL connection. On paper it looks perfect for gaming; a solid ~23ms ping to UK servers (FastPath) with practically no jitter, a constant 4.5/0.25 mbps throughput yet online gaming (Xbox Live) shows way more lag than the ping figures would suggest, it's pretty poor.
Any suggestions as to why this could be? It's as if either my hardware (HomeHub4) or BTs network has a very low priority for gaming traffic (I game mainly during peak hours, as do most people I expect)
I'm currently testing a non BT router to see if the issue lies with the Home Hub. It's definitely looking better so far gaming wise (will need to test more though) but actual web browsing is noticeably slower with the same speedtest/ping results!?
All other hardware is removed from the network, cable to the Xbox has been swapped. Gaming performance is my primary concern and the BT connection is almost putting a stop my enjoyment of online play.
My exhange is Infinitiy enabled but my cabinet not and seemingly no way to find out when it will be.

The current BT homehub which is Homehub3 is a very poor router in my opinion but I dont have any issues with online gaming when my connection works correctly.
Can you go to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and do a speed test
    Also go http://192.168.1.254
then go to settings, advanced, broadband then connection and copy and paste the ADSL connection information here.

  • Macbook air 2011 online gaming with Intel HD 3000?

I was wondering whether I could buy a McBook Air with online gaming performance... The video card Intel HD 3000, would it perform well enough with games like Warbirds from iEN ?
    Thaks for the input.
    docmontreal

    Hi doc,
    From their website - http://www.totalsims.com/requirements.php
The Intel HD 3000 has triple the VRAM memory allocation and the GPU (although shared) is superior to the Radeon 9800.
It'll definitely get the job done. Were there any other games you were interested in playing as well?

  • Probs with online gaming due to subnet or IP addresses

When I first hooked up my router I had probs with Network Magic connections.
Now that I have it running better... I seem to be having a problem when gaming
    online.
My boyfriend and I have hooked up our pc's together and have tried gaming online
together... and it worked for a couple of days.  But with having some D-Link router
    probs... we reconnected everything.
Now I recall seeing two different subnet numbers for each of us before we redid
the D-Link... now they are the same...
So I am wondering if this problem is router related or does it lie with Network
Magic?  All I know is... that when I try to get on a multiplayer gaming server
I get kicked by Punkbuster saying:  'PB GUID AUTH: UNKNOWN'.
I think our online gaming predictament is due to my boyfriend and my subnet
numbers now being the same. (unlike before).
(If my prob does not relate to my router and Network Magic... than I thought
of putting in a Punkbuster Ticket to evenbalance.com)
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. : )
Note: my firewall is configed to allow online gaming, so I know that's not the
    prob.

  • HELP! SETTING FOR ONLINE GAMING.

    Hi all reading this,
I am having trouble with my wiresless router (WRT54GS). I've got it all setup on my network for wireless and RJ45 data points. The problem is I don't know how to set up these ports for online gaming. The manual told me the ports it uses but does not mean anything to me when i'm trying to insert it into the router. Here's what the game manual tells me:
    TYPE                        LOCAL                  REMOTE
    udp                           any                          27900
    tcp                             any                          29900
    tcp                              any                        29901
    tcp                            any                           6667
    udp                            6500                       27900
    udp                            6500                        any
    tcp                             any                           28910
    udp                            13139                        13139
    udp                              any                           27900
    tcp                              any                            28910
this is very confusing for me where to ener the data. I just need to know how to set it up.
    Thanks

hi... logon to router's setup page, open I.E. and in the address bar typ 192.168.1.1 it would ask for username and password, put "admin" as a password (default password) without any username...click on "applications & gaming" >> port triggering and trigger these ports which you've mentioned in the post...
