Infinity Checker - Neighbour can, I can't (Milton ...

Hi
I'm in Walnut Tree, Milton Keynes and have Sky BB and calls, but BT line rental.
I've been checking my BT phone number and that of my neighbours' on the Infinity checker and recently Infinity has appeared as an option for my neighbours, but not for me. My house is physically joined to my neighbours (mine is end of terrace).
Some time ago, someone mentioned that my telephone line may take a different route to the street cabinet - I've also tested house numbers and post codes and it seems just about everyone near me can get Infinity except me.
In 2003, I took part in a fibre trial with BT which was much faster than my current ADSL connection. So if I was able to get fibre then, can I still get it now? There is a BT manhole cover in the pavement immediately outside my house too.
I'd happily transfer my BB, calls and even tv package to join the FTTP trial...

  • Whole block can get infinity and I can't...

I have just signed up to BT standard broadband and am hoping to possibly upgrade to fibre in the near future. I have tried calling BT however they say I can’t get fibre due to them entering in the phone number and saying it is unavailable.
When I check the availability of fibre using my address it says it is available to me, however when I enter my phone number it says it isn’t.
All my neighbours can get infinity and I can’t, please don’t say it is down to routing as I can’t be the only flat in a nine story building that can’t get it.
They are all connected to the same cabinet and exchange as me. Front door is less than 2 metres away from mine. Please see just one example below.
    Can someone please help.
    Thanks

  • My next door neighbour can but I can't?

    Hi guys,
I was wondering if someone might be able to help me understand the reason why my next door neighbour can receive BT Infinity & I cannot. We are in a terrace street but have our telephone wires coming from different poles. The poles appear to be joined by wire. I can see the green cabinet from my front door, but I am apparently not eligible. What could cause two houses from the same exchange, next door to each other have different availablity? My other neighbour (on the same pole as me) cannot receive infinity.
    Thanks in advance

  • BT infinity checker says infinity in my area, but ...

    Hi there guys
I've just recently checked if BT infinity was available in my area and what I found out is that according to the BT infinity checker on BT's website, BT infinity is in my area.
However I have not been notified my BT, is the BT checker reliable enough to believe and does that mean BT infinity is in my area or does BT have to phone me up ?

Hi there, the B.T checker is normally reliable enough yes, although it's not unknown for there to be a database issue. Contact sales 0800 800 150, they will be able to tell you there and then whether you can receive Infinity or not.

  • BT Infinity checker states Brentwood as enabled - ...

I'm sure I'm not the only frustrated one in this position.
The online checker states that Brentwood exchange is enabled for infinity (apperantly one of the first in the country).
However, a check against my phone number states that I cant get Infinity. The max I get is ADSL at 1mbit.
I know that all cabinets are not active but I can't get any information as to which cabinet I connect to and when that will be enabled for Infinity.
I can't get any help from the BT customer service dept.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I can see exactly what your saying & in no way disagree.
I do think however the wording of the current BT television advertising campaign for Infinity requires modifying as these so called 'personalised estimates' gave me a completely different perception of a speed estimate.
When I received my personalised estimate of 80/20 sadly I actually believed this, maybe becuase I live very close to my FTTC cab, & was a little dissapointed after the installation to see I hadn't got what I was told by BT as a result of my 'personalised estimate'.
Im still happy with my download/upload speeds but am very dissapointed with ping/latency tests conducted through BT's fibre network.
Perhaps the words 'UpTo' should make a return to BT's advertising campaign.

  • Is the BT Infinity Checker ever wrong?

Me and my brother have seperate houses on the same new house estate on the outskirts of Coventry which have all been built by the same builder, if i look over my garden fence i see his cars parked on his drive.
He is upgrading to fibre today however the bt infinity checker tells me that i can't have fibre - which is something i've
been waiting for since FTTC was first announced.
I had an engineer come and sort out a telephone socket in our house and i mentioned to him that i couldn't get fibre and he said that was strange as we should all be connected to the same cabinet since he worked for BT Broadband and looked after the area i was in.
At the bottom of my road is an older housing estate so i don't know if its probably that i'm connected to the cabinet that they are connected to instead.
My questioin is, can the checker ever be wrong? And if it can, how can i get it verified if i can get fibre or not? I'm a big gamer and adsl latency and lack of upload are a big pain.

The DSL checker tells you which cabinet you and your bro are connected to www.dslchecker.bt.com

  • Difference between infinity checker and actual spe...

    Hi,
A few months back my street became infinity enabled and the speedtester on the infinity page said i can/could get 53.3/15.7 so i signed up. I understand that i would not probably not receive the full amount the infinity checker quoted but i was slightly dissapointed when my line finally stabilized and i was receiving 43/7, however my previous broadband was only 3.8/0.7 i decided to not chase it.
Now after a month of it being stable at 43/7 it suddenly dropped to 36/7 and after 5 days at this speed i checked it and found the ip profiles of the line set at 36.64/20. I decided to contact BT via online chat and after a 2hr encounter with India there was no fault found on the line and i was told there was nothing they can do. So i guess my question is would you be happy recieving 36/7 when the initial speedcheck (which does not say estimate as far as i can see) was 53/15?

On installation it was a lot lower than the estimate which could indicate a faulty install, or just a bad estimate.
As the speed has now dropped, this could also be the same or different fault.
Keep your eye on it, if it drops to half the installation speed then that to me would indicate a fault.
Is there any noise on the phone?

  • How reliable is the "Can I get Infinity" checker?

    So here's a dilemma
We're looking to buy a house and think we've found the "one".
BT infinity tells us.. yes we can get infinity, 160mb! Or ADSL for 1mb.
I mean really that does sound too good to be true.. and I can just see it now, we move in all excited, have bought the house.. and it turns out we can only get 1mb broadband because the checker was wrong.
Is there any way you can know with 100% certainty that a house can get fiber, before moving in and getting a line installed? I need absolute certainty before putting an offer in, because 1mb adsl would be un-usable as I work from home.

    Doesn't look like it..
It's at the top of willen lake, and uses the bradwell exchange.

  • Oooops my neighbours can access my Infinity

Hi, To test my new Inifinity's speed on a better PC I borrowed my friendly neighbours laptop and entered my wireless/password key into their laptop so I could log into my network.
However their laptop has now "remembered" my password and they can now access my network at anytime by clicking on it.  Initially it was logging into my network in their house as my signal is strong next door.  I have reset their network to auto login to their TalkTalk account, but they can still access my wi-fi just by clicking on the wi-fi icon as it has remembered my password.  I tried to elete my password in network properties but it won't let me.
Do I have to reset my password on my Home Hub5 to prevent this?  Would I then have to retype in this new password to all mobile devices in my house to access the new wi-fi?  Or can I do something on their laptop to remove my password from its memory?
We get on really well and I trust them entirely but I'd rather know only I can access my wi-fi.

To be sure you have to change the password on the router - and all your devices
But you can tell their laptop to forget your network, depending on what version of the operating system it is

  • Was able to get infinity but now can't?

    Hi
I have been checking the BT website for a while now since Sky bought O2 (my current provider).  It has always confirmed that I was able to get Infinity 2.  Even last week when I almost completed the order but cancelled at the final step as I had only just received my MAC code (and apparently I could not use it for seven days otherwise I would be charged).  It was all good news you can get Infiinity 2.
But now, went to order tonight and now I cannot get it.  The openreach website shows all the surrounding exchanges are accepting orders.  My neighbour (two doors away) who is an openreach engineer has confirmed that he has it and that both our telephone lines share the same cabinet.  Thanks to my neighbour I know that my cabinet has been upgraded.  I can even follow both our telephone lines to the same cabinet (we still have telegraph poles) and the cabinet is 50 metres away.  So what has happened?
Sabotage by Sky (joking) or just bad planning from BT and too many people signed up for BT Sports??
Trouble is it now means that I am severely tempted by the offer that Sky is trying to intice me with of free broadband and Sky Entertainment plus for a year but it means that I will have to transfer my phone to them and I am just not keen on moving wholesale to Sky.
Just to confirm that my telephone line has always been with BT and has never been transferred to another service provdier.
    I am in Eastbourne - BN22 8.
    Thanks

I'm afraid it probably means that the cabinet has reached its capacity for FTTC users.  If lots more people want it they may and extra capacity but not for some time.
Probably worth trying every few days for a bit in case there was a mistake, or someone cancels.
You could also see what happens if you try an order with PlusNet or similar.  You'll probably get the same result; all the FTTC ISP's share the BT Openreach cabient resources; first come first served.
