Infinity Drops by 20 megs on WiFi but almost 40meg...

Hey,
my Infinity Drops by 20 megs on WiFi but almost 40megs on Ethernet - I have tried all permutations at resolving this including borrowing a friends infinity hub with the same result.
Any ideas to resolve this?
My WiFi Drivers are up to date.
Ricardo.

Hi
By 'drops' do you mean 'downloads'.
40meg on ethernet but 20meg on wireless seems to me almost certain to be your wireless card EITHER being 'g' rather than 'n' OR being 'n' but only having one data stream (some of the cheaper non-branded cards are like this - even in branded laptops). Other than that, I don't think anything is wrong.
All of these would have the effect of limiting the wireless speed to around 20meg or so in the real world. I just tested mine with a few g cards and n cards with one stream and could only get a maximum of 21-22meg. By using an n card with more streams I get the full 40meg.
I'd look for a cheap replacement wireless card. Look out for those that say 'up to 300meg' on them. Like all things wireless it won't really do 300meg, but it will do the 40 meg of your infinity.  If you're using a laptop, most let you change the wireless card (CARE - HP and Sony often dont), OR you can get an 'up to 300meg' micro dongle to put in a usb socket. They work out about £15-£20 on Amazon...
One other option would be to use homeplugs (but obviously they aren't wireless!)
Hope this helps
Mark

I just bought the new MacBook Air a few days ago and my Internet connection is so slow. My iPhone's connection works fine when connected to the wifi but the MacBook connects for a few seconds then drops completely. What do I do? I tried connecting it to my phone's hotspot and it works perfectly. I'm a new Mac user so I have no idea what to do. I have Comcast xfinity cable and Internet. Thanks for the help.

Your warranty includes 90 days of phone support. Contact Apple.

My early 2011 Macbook Pro on start up has wifi, but drops it soon after and never comes back, AHT shows nothing wrong. Multiple wifi's tried and same on all.  I have also re-installed OSX from scratch and still happens.

I have the same problem. I have a white macbook 2010, with mavericks os. I just found my mac not powering on and then I tried to run it on safe mode by holding the shift button but it will turn off seconds after I let go of the shift button. I am able to access the desktop and use it while holding the shift button the whole time. It's a bit slower than before but I figured maybe it's because of holding down shift button.
I went to the Apple Store to have them look at my mac and I was told it's a failed hard disk. I wasn't told why he was able to conclude that a failed hard disk is causing the problem, I was just told to get a replacement. But the thing is when I ran Disk Utility it says, "disk appears to be okay." So I also feel like it's possible it's not a hard disk issue because it's also the first time it happened. My mac was working perfectly fine before all this.
Do you know anything else that could cause this problem? Were you able to find out what's wrong?
    Thanks.

  • 40 meg at socket but only getting 14 meg

    Hi,
Due to speed issues with my broadband i purchased infinity and the engineer showed me the results 39995 download , 9995 upload. My line was installed yesterday including new bt router and the speed has steadily dropped from 20 meg to 14.03 upload and 3.30 meg download with a ping of 32 m/s.I have reset everything and now getting 18.64 upload and 8.8 meg download and a ping of 20m/s.From what everyone is saying i would of expected 37 meg plus and the engineer said i should get very near the full 40meg as my cabinet is very very close.Does it take time to settle or is my hub faulty?
    thanks Mark

I was set up earlier this month and have the exact same problem as you. Problem is my IP profile is set to 14262kbps which means I can't get more than 14mb download.
At the socket I 'm 40000kbps and was told I should get 39mb.
I read on another post by BT that there were a load of faulty openreach modems which was reducing speed. I'm worried we may both have received these dodgy modems which were meant to be recalled back in November. In fact the engineer was here for over 3 hours trying to install it. He then discovered the only modem that he had was faulty as the lan1 wouldn't light up. He had to ring another engineer to drop off another modem which worked but could it be the faulty recalled product?
Hi trogoy, as your install has been in longer , why not post the full results from the BT speedtester including the ip profile here,
Can you also tell us what the BT checker states that you expected speed should be ( not what the engineer said).

  • Community - My iMac keeps dropping and instantly resetting my wifi connection

Hey folks - I know a lot of people have been complaining about desktop issues and wifi connectivity, but this seems to be quite the variant from other folks' problems...
Every 2-20 minutes, my iMac is dropping, then instantly resetting my wifi connection. The actual wifi drop lasts no longer than 5 seconds, and instantly reconnects itself with no input from me... the problem is it completely interrupts any downloading, streaming, gaming, or anything else I might be doing that requires a constant internet connection. It seems to drop off just long enough to stop the connection, then it resets all on it's own.
I'm currently using a mid-2011 27 inch iMac intel core i5 3.1 ghz processor w/ OS X Lion 10.7.3. I have a Linksys router and a GCI issued modem, unsure of the brand as there are minimal markings on it. The internet/tv service (run by GCI) is smooth throughout the rest of my home, and no other items we own connected to the net seem to have the same problem...
I have tried soft resets on both the modem and router. I have restarted my machine several times and re-added the network location and wifi connection to my computer. I have unplugged both modem and router to let those reset and have unplugged and reconnected my coax cable for several minutes as well. No time of day seems to work well, and it's becoming quite difficult to work and do other fun functions like stream television or game.
Any help here would be super appreciated, and I need to warn folks right away that I am NOT very tech savvy, so any kind of messing with DNS or other what I would call 'advanced' settings may be tough :O Thanks and cheers!
    -Monty

Hi Monty, I know you're not tech savvy but if you can get an 802.11n router your iMac would be able to take advantage of the less crowded 5 GHz spectrum. The Linksys ought to have some markings on it which you could look up to determine if it is 802.11n capable or not.
The symptoms you describe are consistent with wireless interference. The ability to use 802.11n in lieu of the older 802.11g your Linksys router is probably using is one way to mitigate its effects.
The Apple AirPort Extreme base station and the Time Capsule can both create two simultaneous wireless networks: a fast 5 GHz one for your iMac, and a 2.4 GHz one for other devices.
I do not know why your iMac drops off and on but that may be one consideration.

  • Says i'm connected to wifi, but my 3G symbol doesn't change,

Says i'm connected to wifi, but my 3G symbol doesn't change. Also, i'm not really connected because my internet doesn't work, but all my other devices work fine on my home wifi.

IT'S BLUETOOTH: Iphone 4 keeps dropping wifi when I select a photo to airplay to my atv2. I have just figured out the airplay issue with PICTURES from the iPhone camera roll. It's BLUETOOTH. When I turn blue off, airplay of photos works perfectly solid and responsive. Turn blue on, it breaks wifi. This is definitely the conflict, it's night and day. There is definitely interference in there somewhere.

  • Bt infinity dropping

i am sick of my bt infinity dropping and i am sick of ringing bt up and going through the same steps they change the channel on my hub i will not ring up now because i know there will be a lot of swear words from my mouth my kids are getting on my case about not being able to use it is there some main supervisior i can ring up who will talk to me like a person with a problem  because if someone says it is a channel on my hub again i will smash the thing up  here is the problem the hub lights all stay blue which is good but i get a yellow triange on my laptop saying limited ....the same on my sons laptop .....and his ps3 internet runs very slow when we do have internet thats after reseting the hub idont know how many times,, ive had enough now ive not rang for 5 month but i feel like i am wasteing my money i think if i have this problem any longer i will go back to virgin ok they are more expensive but the internet and speeds was there when i needed it
if anyone has a number for someone who will sort this once and for all please post

I too am at my wits end with bt, exactly same problems as yourself scottt2010, I have had engineers out, shift and lift, new equipment all to no avail, I honestly think we are being ripped off and that bt have not researched the infinity properly before getting us all to pay out for it, now they have superfast, they need to sort out one job before moving on to the next, isnt it obvious that there are a lot of complaints about infinity before upgrading, if you cant get one you wont get the other, im leaving as soon as my contract is up, well worn out by bt

My MacBook Air says it in connected to my wifi, but my wifi signal has a "!" sign on it. My computer will not allow internet access, help?

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Applyand test.
If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

  • I have an AT&T iphone 6 and want to give my AT&T 4 to my wife but she is a Sprint customer.  How involved would it be to convert my 4 from AT&T to Sprint?

I Have an AT&T iPhone 6 and wants to give my AT&T 4 to my wife but she is a Sprint customer.  Is this possible and, if so, how involved is it to convert my 4 from AT&T to Sprint?

    Likely not possible.
Sprint is a CDMA carrier which typically do not support BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) .
You will have to ask Sprint if they can offer service on a unlocked GSM Phone that does not have the CDMA chip.
Its unlikely they will though.  But if they do, you will need to request AT&T unlock your iPhone so you can insert a Sim card form another carrier into it

My iPad receives email on the hotel wifi but will not send.  The error message reads "user name or password for smpt......is incorrect" but both are correct and unchanged.  Restarting iPad did not help.

I did try this too, but when I access my webmail on the iPad, the iPad doesn't allow me to type my message.  I am able to enter in the "to" address and the "subject" line, but then the keyboard will not come up for me to type my message.  Is there some trick to this?  Very frustrating!

  • My iPhone 4S shows that I am connected to wifi, but still shows 4G and not the bars for wifi.

I have been using my iPhone 4S for one year and has been working perfectly fine until now. I connect it to wifi and it shows the blue check, showing I am supposed to be connected, but at the top, where the 4G network shows, it stays at 4G and does not show the bars for the wifi. It only connects to the one home network I have. When I am connected to the home wifi, it kicks me off the wifi everytime I put my phone on standby--> lock it after I am done using it. It also kicks me off my home wifi occasionally, when I am in the middle of using it, and have to recconect it. If I go to a store, for example, JcPenny, I try to connect it to the wifi there and it shows the blue check, and like I said, the 4G network does not change to the wifi bars. Please try to help me!

You are detecting the wifi, but not connected to it.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

I have a iMac, Mac OS X v10.7.5, and recently had a problem connecting to internet.  I can connect via wifi, but when I try connecting via ethernet it's not working.  When I go to the preferences > network, it shows "green" / connected for ethernet but when I open up Safari or Firefox, it doesn't show a connection to the internet.

Are you trying to print through the airport express wirelessly or the built in wireless of the lexmark? If you want to use the airport express, there is no need to mess with the wireless printing on the lexmark at all. The airport express will be easy to set up, all the wireless setups through the printers are a pain.

  • My ipod says that I am connected to wifi, but the app store won't load, what do I do?

I just bought a brand new iPod touch yesterday, and I was trying to learn how to use it. I connected to my University's wifi, (and I know it works because my laptop is on it, and other friends have iPod touches who connect to it). I can connect to the wifi, but when I try to get onto the app.  store or afari it says I am not connected. I need help what do I do? I have already restarted everything, and it did not work

You need to check to make sure you are actually connected to the network.  Tap Settings > WiFi >and then tap the blue ">" next to the network name with checkmark.  You should see a complete set of IP address but if the router didn't issue you an IP address properly, you will see your touch IP address start with 169.x.  If this is the case, you are connected to the internal network but not to the web.
First thing to do (while you are on that screen) is tap "Forget Network".  Then turn WiFi off.  Turn it back on and, if needed, tap Other and re-enter your network information.  If you continue to have problems, check with your IT department on Monday.
In the meantime, your laptop and iTunes can be used to purchase apps and music.  Syncing them with your touch is a great way to get them installed while you are waiting for the answer on your WiFi problem.
