Info on Promise 20378

Hi to all  ,
i want to buy another Maxtor 6Y080P0 HD to make a raid 1 (mirroring) on Promise 20378,  i want to make this to increase the reading/writing performance, but i don't know if this controller can really increase my system performance and if it use the cpu to perform this operation or it'is cpu indipendent like a scsi controller.
I hope that someone can give me more info, thanks for all and sorry for my bad english.

Yes, i have read the sticky,  but i haven't found an answer to my question: "The Promise 20378 controller is or not cpu load free?" I don't know if my question is clear  (my knolege of english language is poor), i want to know if the promise controller use my cpu to operate or it's indipendent like a adaptec scsi controller.
Thanks for all, bye

  • Promise 20378 is FastTrak what?

On the K8T Neo-FIS2R board, can someone please tell me what the Promise 20378 equates to for Promise FastTrak drivers?
I purchased the board from newegg on "refurb" and do not have drivers.  I spent a few frustrating hours yesterday trying to get Windows XP Pro to find my SATA drive.  I have read over the solutions on this board, so I know I can get it to work, but I lack any drivers at all.  So, if anyone can point me to both VIA and Promise drivers, I would appreciate it!
    Thank you!
Edit:  By the way, I did finally get a new PSU.  I went with the CoolMax 550W Taurus CX Silent series.  So far, very nice!

  • Maxtor ATA133, Promise 20378 chipset and IDE 3

When my 865PE FIS2R RMA mobo arrives I want to use a Maxtor 120 gig hd (ATA 133) on IDE3.  Looking through the manual on pg 2-20 it mentions Promise 20378 chipset and IDE3 on the same page.  Can I just directly hook the hd to IDE 3 or do I have to load Promise 20378 chipset drivers from a floppy?  I believe I have to select IDE 3 through the BIOS as the first boot device, is there anything else I need to do?
Just trying to expedite getting my system up and running, any input appreciated!

    Hi braveheart,
I have just purchased 2x DiamondMax Plus9 160GB SATA150 drives, I do not want them in any kind of raid, just as two large hard disks. And I am having endless problems with windows XP remaining stable and the M875P motherboard. It could be something else not quite right, like memory or graphics but my hunch is related to the hard disks. Ive ran XP before in the past no probs and never had blue screens with UNMOUNTABLE_Boot_Volumes! and even windows repair failing to scan disks! I have managed to install XP onto them and use it for say 5 hours but it has crashed now 5 times seriously and required a rebuild. Im tempted to switch to 2 non sata hard disks like Samsung  SpinPoint P80 160GB UDMA133 as Im sure the problem is hard disk related. Although I will be welcome to suggestions..
There is not much out there on google about it, the first probs I saw were posted here in the important posts section, the unofficial FAQs
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/service/forum/index.php?threadid=21469&sid=
It mentions a fix in bios 1.9, but when is this coming???
I don`t think you will need to install any drivers if your not going to use it an raid formation
    cheers

  • Does Promise 20378 on FIS2R support HD 120G?

Will Windows XP and Linux(Probably Mandrake or SuSE) recogonize a Western Digital 160JB HD correctly in terms of size and functionality on my Neo2 FIS2R raid EIDE connector or the other two EIDE connectors? If nobody try it, any one knows the detail support specification of Promise 20378 chipset? Thanks a lot!!!

Just remember to set your LBA mode to "On" or 1 for HDD above 137GB.

  • 875P NEO - Strange problem with SATA non RAID on Promise 20378

    Hello,
After replacing an IDE harddisk suddenly my S-ATA drive connected to the Promise 387 controller can not be found anymore.
When booting it says: No devices found, BIOS not installed. I got the the advice to disable S-ATA in the BIOS, but then no S-ATA drive will work ofcourse.
    So here is my situation:
    - MSI 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) mainboard with A6758 BIOS version
    BIOS settings:
    Integrated Peripherals:
    - On board Promise IDE = as S-ATA
    On Chip IDE configuration:
    - P-ATA only
    - S-ATA keep enabled = NO (wouldn't know what this means)
    - P-ATA channel selection = Both (if set otherwise it will not recognize the second IDE
    controller, strange!)
    - S-ATA ports defintion: P0-4th/ P1-3rd (standard setting)
    - Config as RAID = NO
Also I have the Promise 1.0.1.29 drivers installed within XP, I know that MSI says 378_55 is the latest, but when installing a clean XP these drivers did not work at all, so I installed the old ones.Within XP it is recognized btw as being a "WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE controller"
What I am wondering now is:
Is it true the Promise controll controls the 3rd IDE controller as well as the S-ATA HDD? And if so can someone please tell what would be the correct settings in the BIOS when having 2 IDE HDD's connnected to the third IDE controller and 1 S-ATA disk on the Promise controller? Because the strange thing only 1 IDE HDD is recognized by XP, the other IDE HDD and S-ATA not.
Ok, I hope I was a little bit clear, I'm really desperate , so I hope you can help me out !!

Not sure what the problem is.
Like I said, all the settings in Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config should only affect the Intel controller(IDE1&2,Serial1&2)
The only interaction you have with the Promise controller(IDE3,Serial3&4) is through Integrated Peripherals>>Promise Controller(As SATA, As Raid, Disabled). You can also select a drive connected to the Promise as a boot device from Bios>>Advanced Features>>Boot Device Select.
I would take a step back and start over a little more slowly.
My assumption so far is that you have WinXP installed on a drive on the Intel controller and that it is booting/functioning properly.
You are trying to install 2 IDE and 1 SATA drives on the Promise controller.
1- In Device Manager, right-click on the Promise 378 controller and select uninstall. If you know for sure that the "Raid Consolel SCSI Processor Device" is from a driver you installed for the Promise controller, uninstall that too. Otherwise leave it alone.
2- Shutdown/Unplug power and disconnect all 3 drives from the Promise controller.
3- Plugin power/Boot to the Bios and set the Promise controller to "disabled". Also make sure Intel "On-Chip IDE Config" menu "Config SATA As Raid" option is set to "NO"
4- Save and reboot to WinXP. There should be no Bios errors and the Promise entries in Device Manager should be gone.
5- Shutdown/Unplug Power and reconnect 1 drive(the SATA to Serial3 for simplicity) Power + data cables!
6- Plugin power/boot to Bios and set Promise controller to "As SATA"
7- Save and reboot. You should see the drive name briefly after the initial post screen if you've disabled the MSI splash screen.
8- WinXP should say something about finding a new SCSI device. If not just see if it's in Device manager and right-click>>"Install Drivers" and point it to the driver folder from before and install the "WinXP Promise SATA378 (tm) IDE Controller Driver". Not the Fastrack ones for raid.
9- Now after another reboot if the SATA drive isn't visible from Windows Explorer, try the diskmgmt.msc utility again.
10- If all this works, try adding 1 of the IDE drives by shutting down again, installing the HDD and checking the Disk Manager. If the drives are already partitioned/formatted you wouldn't need to use Disk Manager. Repeat with the 3rd drive.
If this doesn't work, let me know which step you got to and the problem encountered.

    Hello!
    Is SATA/RAID enabled in BIOS?
Have you hit F6 during Windows installation, for allowing Windows Set-up to locate the drivers?
If SATA/RAID was disabled, it wouldn't even appear in Device Manager
If the RAID is secondary storage, then hitting F6 won't acheive anything as Windows is already installed
You will however need to go into the RAID BIOS and create an array before you can use the RAIDed disks

  • 875p neo Promise chip

I'm running RAID 1 on the Promise 20378 chipset.  It blue screened on me.  Now it won't boot.  I get a message which says drive 1 is disconnected or disabled.
See if you can follow this.  When I connect either drive 1 or drive 2 to SER 3 I get the disconnected or disabled message.  If I connect either drive 1 or drive 2 to SER 4 I get drive 2 is disconnected or disabled.  If I connect drive 1 and drive 2 to SER 1 and 2 (ICH5R chipset) it says both drives are normal.  Looks to me like the Promise chipset is shot!  In order to save my data I need to replace or repair the board.  Right?

Have you tried re-installling your Promise drivers?

  • K8T MS 6702 V 1.0 + Seagate Barracuda SATA II + Windows 7

    Hello,
Im new on this forum! Im having serious trouble getting my system set up. I have a K8T Neo MS 6702 V 1.0 mobo and right now im trying to install windows 7 on my new hard drive. the hard drive is a Seagate barracuda 7200 SATA 2. when installing windows 7 I get asked to deliver drivers for the new hard drive. when I put in a CD-rom with drivers or a Floppy, I am able to load the drivers and view the partition on the hard drive. So om thinking windows must be able to install. when I roll through the installation it has to reboot several times. the first reboot works out fine, but the second one doesn't go all that well. is boots up to the splash screen. when I try safe mode I can see it loading windows up to a file called: classpnp.sys. Now I have read that this mobo does not work with SATA 2, but then you should be able to jumper the drive to SATA 1. The thing is , there is no way I can use jumpers on this drive. I will give a list of my system specs now.
    AMD Athlon 64 (socket 754)
    K8T Neo MS-6702 ATX V1.0
    VIA k8T800 chipset
    VIA VT8237 chipset
    Promise 20378 on board
Seagate barracuda SATA 2 750 Gb
I have tried going into the recovery mode of windows 7 with the installation DVD but when I have it to check out my boot problems it comes back with an error saying that there is no hard drive installed. Im wondering if this has to do with the mobo or the harddrive. I havn't updated the bios because I'm affraid I mess up the bios.
If you guys need any more info ill try and find out!
I hope someone can help me out here.

I don't really know but you can read this and see if it does you any good.

  • Raid Options on 865PE Neo2 Fis2r

Hey Guys, Here is my setup.
    2 X WD74 Raptors on SATA 1 & 2 ICH5R
    2 X WD250 PATA on IDE 3 Promise 20378
    Question is:
    Can I add a third array using the Promise 20378 SATA 3 & 4 connectors? I.E.
    2 X WD74 Raptors on SATA 1 & 2 ICH5R
    2 X WD250 PATA on IDE 3 Promise 20378
    2 X WD250 SATA on SATA 3 & 4 Promise 20378
    (Total of 3 Arrays)
    or
Am I limited to adding 2 more WD250 SATA drives to my existing second array using SATA 3 & 4
    I.E.
    2 X WD74 Raptors on SATA 1 & 2
    4 X WD250, 2 PATA on IDE 3 & 2 WD250 SATA on SATA 3 & 4
    (Total of 2 Arrays)

You should have a RAID manual that comes with the mobo that'll explain what are the allowed combos for RAIDs on the mobo

  • Server Setup advice for a video production house

    Hello Forum,
I recently started working for a small video production company, I need advice on the type of server and other hardware and services that will allow my co-workers to work efficiently. Here are some details:
Currently we are going to buy a new server, I am not sure what we should look at getting,
currently we use a mini mac running OSX server and have 6 iMacs that the editors and other staff use.
We also have a 15 TB Drobo network storage device which is attached to the mini-mac server we are going to replace.
The production team uses Final Cut and Motion to build documentaries.
The other issue is that need a way to connect the office in Baltimore to the office in Washington DC and ideally share files between each location, currently they cannot access the network from Baltimore and have to have a copy of the unedited footage on their own Drobo.
What type of server setup do you recommend? Quad core? speed?
Should we set up a VPN to connect offices or does someone have a better idea, if so what applications do we need?
I know windows networking pretty well, but Mac is totally new to me.Currently editing files from the server is really slow and files are usually pulled to the iMacs to do editing, burning DVDs from files on the server hardly ever works- they pull them local then burn the DVD and it works.
I would love to hear suggestions to help us get up and running.
Anyone know of a good website for server setup- Since there is no Domains in OSX that i know of, how can we secure the network? Links would be great.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

Well if your looking for performance. You could get a Promise VTrak E-Class RAID with 32TB of storage, later on you can add more chassis to the raid for more storage space. The raid can be expanded up to 160TB. (80 drive bays, each drive 2 TB)
Using fiber you could attach the raid to an xServer or Mac Pro (running mac os x server). You'll probable want at least 8 or 16 GB of ram on the server.
The server can run a copy of final cut server. Witch makes it easer to work as a group. Mac OS X server, when properly configured, can also be used to create a VPN between both locations.
Final Cut Server will let editors check in/out specific parts of the documentaries. So the project lives on the server; instead of scattered over every ones computers. Part of this is you can pull down thumb nails versions of the video to work off of. Only when you do the final render do you download the HD version of the video.
If you want even better performance on the editing stations. you could also upgrade to Mac Pros. Mac Pros have upgrade slots witch you can use to add fiber networking. You could also use the upgrade slots to add a black magic real time HD capture card.
Or if you want to keep the imacs. you might want to hook the server to a switch by fiber, and have the imacs connected to the same switch by 1000-T
If you call apple i'm sure they'd be happy to help you figure this all out.

  • MSI-875P-FIS2R

    "BUMP"
    Hi
WOW!  I have just purchased the MSI 875P Neo and after reading through the many, many problem posts regarding this motherboard on this board, I'm beginning to wonder if I've made the right choice?  Just read one from 'ferres' saying that he may have got an 875P from an earlier batch and this might be causing his problems.  How can we tell if I have a recent build of the board?
I'm just getting my related hardware together (i.e. hard drives, cd-rom, display cards etc) so I have not set up the mobo yet but I would like some help with installing the drives using PATA and, or SATA.
Ok, having read the manuals and seen, apart from the normal dual ultra DMA 66/100 controllers integrated in the Intel ICH6/ICH5R chipset (IDE 1 & 2), there are also two integrated SATA/SATA RAID 150 ports (SER1 & SER2) in this chipset.
Also, the board has the Promise 20378 onboard controller with IDE 3 for connection two hard drives at up to modes UDMA 133.  It also has two SATA/SATA RAID connectors (SER3 & SER4).
Now, I don't want to have any RAID Disk Arrays at this point because if I can get 133MB/Sec or 150MB/Sec without RAID (not on IDE 1 & 2 of course), then I simply want to connect my ATA133 Maxtor hard drives normally on IDE 1 & 2 @ UDMA 100, or on SER1 & SER2, or with the "As S-ATA" enabled for the Promise 20378 in the BIOS, connected to IDE 3 as Master & Slave, which will give me ATA133.
There is also the fourth option of using SER3 & SER4 on the Promise controller.
The problem is that my Maxtor drives are not SATA drivers and I know that you can get SERIAL conversion kits that will allow me to use my drives as SATA drives and achieve 150MB/Sec but I have not found out where I can purchase them so (if anyone has a link in the UK I would be grateful),I would be happy with 133MB/Sec for the moment.
Q:  Given this information, can anyone who has already configured their 875P successfully using any of the options given above, I would appreciate details of exactly how it was done.  I.e. What connections did you use and which is best:
IDE 1 (For hard drives set to Master & Slave @ ATA100)
    IDE 2 (For CD-RW/DVD Drives)
SER1 & SER2 (With Serial conversion kit - not sure about ATA 133 drive jumper settings when using PATA drives on SATA ports)
    IDE 3 (Master & Slave)
SER3 & SER4 (Again with Serial converstion kit)
Q:  Also, given the above options and with regards to SATA/PATA, what BIOS settings did you enable/disable for best perfomance?
Q:  I intend to have my CD-RW/DVD drives on IDE 2 so, if using anything other that IDE 1 for my hard drives, does IDE 1 have to have any devices on it for the system to work correctly or can it be disabled (bearing in mind the boot sequence).
At present, I have WinXP Per installed as Master on IDE 1 in another computer and also have a Maxtor 80GB ATA133 as slave on IDE 1, so I will need to transfer the drives to my newly built pc once I have enough information and I would assume that, after first enabling the appropriate options with regard to SATA/Promise 20378 and others, it's best to boot to the CD and fresh install the O/S ?
One last question regarding the USB ports, the manual states that we can have total of 8 with 6 at the rear of the box and two at the front, or 4 at the rear and 4 at the front.  Well there are already 6 on the back I/O plate (4 at the top under the mouse/keyboard and two next to the LAN at the bottom)- how can we only have four at the rear when there are already 6 there?  My case also has two at the front and I also have D-Bracket 2 Connector which when connected to JLED1 and JUSB2 gives another 2 USB ports and when I connect the cabling from my front case USB ports to JUSB3, then I have another 2 USB ports making 10 in total?
I have many other questions regarding the 875P but I will wait for these answers before asking anymore.
    Regards
    Brave01Heart

During boot up it will say what bios version you have. If you got version 1.0 best to get 1.5 and up.
Serial ata should be in native mode, legacy mode will lose 1 of the ide ports.
Some of my previous issues may have been attributed to Win2k which seem to require SP 4 to run properly in hyper threading set ups.

Anyone know how to get Verizon to revert back from FIOS to standard copper service? I have tried for 2 months and customer service either processes incorrect info or promises to fulfill request, but nothing has been done.  Last cust. service person I talked with told me "couldn't be done in my area."  Either they are not trained properly or I'm the victim of a scam.  I cannot have a phone that doesn't operate in a power failure, so short of hiring an attorney and getting a doctor's statement, I'm really at a lost where to turn.  Thank you.
