Very good! Kudos!

in *Open Questions*, yes, you can use a TC as a shared drive in addition to TM backups. Because of the way TM will use up all the space it can before beginning to delete old backups, and since you can't partition a TC (bizarre, but true), a poster here suggested putting a Disk Image of sufficient size on it to be used for the sharing. Sounds workable to me.
One caution: You may need to find some way to back-up that data. The Airport utility has a feature allowing you to "archive" the TC's disk to a USB disk plugged-in to the TC, but it's the whole disk -- you can't pick and choose.
And yes, you can connect your Mac to a TC via Ethernet and do backups. We often recommend that for the initial backup (it will run 40% or more faster, depending on how good/bad the wireless connection is). Then incrementals can be done wirelessly to the same sparse bundle.
That's also a good idea when doing a large or full-system restore.
*Other options:*
If you have multiple Macs and your TC is too small for all of them, you can attach a USB drive to the TC and back some of them up to it. (Why Apple doesn't "officially" support that on an AEBS, which many of us are doing anyway, I cannot figure out).
A shared drive on a Leopard or Snow Leopard Mac on the same local network.
And, of course, a Mac Leopard or Snow Leopard Server on the same local network.
Good job!

just got Prosoft drive genius 3 software, and it's telling me that the external hard drive that i am using for my time machine back up drive needs to be defragmented. is it wise to do this or should i not??
Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup. However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails. And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external. Sort of a catch 22. Any ideas?
Is it a USB hard drive? USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice. Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem. If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time. I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?
Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD. Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.

Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as to store information from two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?
Yes you can but you need to partition the drive into at least 2 separate drives.
To do that you need to use a Windows PC to do the first partitioning. Say you split the drive into two partitions each 1TB (or close to 1TB) each.
Partition fand format both partitions on a Win PC as one NTFS and the other FAT32.
Then move it to the Mac and Reformat the FAT32 partition Mac Extended (Journaled) with a GUID Partition Table.
I have that same drive and that is what I did originally with it. I now have it just for the Mac as I have other externals for the Win systems.
Good Luck. -
Can i partition my internal disk on macbook prop for using time machine?
Hi
I have a macbook pro from 2010 running OS 10.6.8 and I want to upgrade to Yosemite. I want to back up first and I have never used Time Machine before so I have to set it up. Do I need to have an external hard drive or can I use the internal one and partition it? any help appreciated please....
thanks so much.Yes you can, BUT DON'T! If your internal HDD fails, you backup will disappear with it. Backups should always be on a separate HDD. Look at this web site for excellent Time Machine information:

Hi, I hope this question won't seem too basic but if I want to use a new larger external drive for my time machine backups, will it do a new full backup the first time I plug it in and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups. When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it. -
I have a new external drive for my time machine. My hard drive of 650 gb is full. It is reallyslow backing up to my external drive. I have to stay near by as it stops after an hour or so. If I'm not here to restart it, I lose all that time it could have been backing up. It says it is going to take 581 days. Eventually it will say 12 days. Back up time is all over the place. How can I keep the machine backing up when I sleep at night.
GeraldI would go into your in the upper left corner of the mac
Click on system preferences
Click on energy saver
Change the computer sleep and display sleep to never. -

Do you get this window when you hold down the Command+Option keys and launch iPhoto?

How can create room in icloud for the time machine on the mac
I don't like to be carrying a time capsule around. Just need some space in the icloud for the Time Machine. Is that too hard to do?
vcngu wrote:
Backing up a Macpro in icloud shouldn't be rocket science or is it?
No, it is very simple really, iCloud does not back up from Time Machine, or any other OSX program come to that. iCloud IS NOT an OSX backup system. -
I work with a Mac & I had to restore my computer for my time machine back-up. When I attempt to open/edit a photo with either camera raw or photoshop I get the following error message: Error 150:30 , it also sys that licensing for the product has stopped working?
Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite. You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

Can I safely save files to the external harddrive I am using as/for a Time Machine?
Can I safely save files to the external harddrive I am using as/for a Time Machine?
Because ALL Hard Drives fail. They have been since they were invented. It is just a fact of Spinning hard drives.
No nothing special about how TM writes to the drive.
Any hard drive can fail at any time. The day you take it out of the box and plug it in to 10+ years later or anytime in between. Kind of like Life. At some point it ends for everyone. Some sooner some much later.
I've had some work for years, like 7++ running 24/7. Others have died in months to a few years. I've had externals died faster then internal drive and the funny part is an external drive is nothing but the same type drive used Inside a computer, an Internal drive, put into an External case. But most of the time when an external dies it is not the drive itself but the Enclosures Electronic that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and using a SATA, or IDE, to USB Adapter the drives are usually still good. I've even taken dead externals and removed the drive and put that drive inside a computer case and they work for X number of years. But that doesn't mean that All Drives are like that. -
What is the exact protocol for ejecting Time Machine disk from USB?
I have an external drive that I connect and use for Time Machine. When I'm done, I eject the drive and Finder disappears. I pull the USB connector and the OS complains that I did not eject the drive properly.
I've seem the other threads, and I'm afraid I'm going to get a lot of discussion and no answer. So here's a simple question:
What is the exact protocol for closing Time Machine and disconnecting the USB cable to the drive without getting a complaint from the OS?
Thanks
MikeDrag the icon to the trash or highlight it and use the eject button or highlight it and use Command+e.
