Info Sidebar

Just installed Leopard, but iCal has lost the info sidebar that was so helpful in tiger. can i get it back, or am i now stuck with double clicking events and pop-up windows like outlook?

As the Apple Forum folks have just removed entirely one other forum thread on this topic, and have locked another, both with healthy 3-figure reply numbers, I thought it might be good to let newcomers to the topic realize that this issue has been much commented on, and to suggest to them and to previous posters on the subject that if we get too heated on this thread, it probably will not survive long either.
Prior posts on all relevant threads have all stressed the need to register your suggestion or report at:

To me, the most helpful and productive comments on the subject have emphasized that the drawer, per se, is not sacrosanct. Instead, it's easy access to, display of, and editing of that extra layer of data that the info field contains.
And, no, going back to Tiger iCal is not an option under Leopard.
So, let's try to keep this thread up, just so others who are searching for kindred spirits will realize that we're here and that most of us desire better access to the info layer of data in iCal. I think the more we question how we arrived at this situation in Leopard iCal, and the more we mention peeves about other features in this thread, the more quickly we'll lose what is, after all, a wonderful platform for communicating that Apple has provided us.

ICal week view window is gone. When selected the window disappears.

Whenever I click on view->week view (or just the "week" button on the bottom row) my ical window disappears. No idea where it is going. If I click on view->day/month the window comes back. However, after it comes back in day or month view, the info sidebar (and button at the bottom to control it, along with the todo and results list buttons beside it) now isn't there.
Any ideas how to fix this? I think it happened when I plugged my laptop into a 1024x768 projector and then changed my mind quickly and unplugged it, but it has been like this for a couple of weeks now through several reboots etc.
This is a macbook pro running tiger.

Often iCal display anomalies can be rectified by refreshing the iCal plist file.
Quit iCal, and drag the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for desired behavior.

Adding event in Month view

Is there a way to go straight to the detail box when adding an event in month view? When I right click on a date on the calendar then choose "add an event", it just puts it right on the calendar, then I click that so I can put the time down, then only the small box opens so I have to click the "edit" so it will open the big the box that has all the options in it.
Does this make sense? Is there a way to right click a day, choose "add an event" and have it go right to the bigger box where you can finish all the details of the event?
Also I saw a reference to the "info sidebar" in the Mac 101 support on the website.
"In the Info sidebar, click the New Event text to display the text box and type a name for your event, like dentist appointment, band practice, or a birthday party."
Where do I find this "info sidebar"?

Just double click on the day that you want to add the event. That action will display the full edit field.
The info sidebar information on the Mac 101: iCal page is in error. It used to exist in the previous version of iCal.

Changing a long title

In iPhoto's Info. sidebar, the title window only displays about 20 characters. If your title is longer than this, editing is a cumbersome process because it is not possible to highlight the whole title and replace it at one hit.
Does anybody have a workaround for this?

HT2297 iPhoto Raw to JPEG Convesion Issue

When I edit a RAW file in iPhoto '11, my edited version does not lose its RAW badge and I do not see a new JPEG image containing my edits. My original 28 MB RAW file bloats to around 174 MB after editing. Can anyone explain?

Thaks for your question which seems relevant. I believe I had earlier checked the TIFF option to see if it changed the file type upon saving. Would his explain the tripling in size of the file? If so, I am happy to know that. However, with the Advanced TIFF option "unchecked," the file still bloats to 66 MB with my edited changes. From iPhoto Help I had expected an edited RAW file to change to a JPEG after editing. I also assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that editing a RAW file would reduce its size by stripping out unnecessary information. I am still trying to understand 1) why the edited RAW file does not show as JPEG on the info sidebar, and 2) why the edited RAW file increases in size.
The reason for my question is that I wish to create edited RAW images that can be printed and shared as JPEGs on Flickr and FaceBook. Thanks.

Keywords displaying and using

Hi
I have two questions on using keywords:
1) how do I make the keywords pane stay on screen? If I move from one event to the another when adding keywords I lose the keyword pane and have to do command k to get it back. Very frustrating when trying to organise a lot of photos
2) once I have set a keyword to a photo is there a way of displaying that keyword under the actual photo rather than only in the keywords pane and the info sidebar? I used to be able to do that in adobe elements on my old PC and that made it much easier to look at a screen of photos and see which had been key worded and the keyword is.

Thanks to the gentlemen, Messrs. Galt & rack0 tack0, for their timely replies. I failed to mention in my original post that there are upwards of 15 Apple appliances in our house-- from Apple TV to 4 Apple iPhones to 4 iPads to 2 MacBook Pros to 2 iMacs to a 2TB Time Capsule-- we're all Apple, all the time. We don't own a PC and that was what was hanging me up. I did confirm, incidentally that we're IP6 (although, honestly, that technical jargon didn't mean a lot to me-- hey, I learned something [sorta]!). Anyway, after much digging, I've finally determined that what was/is being identified as a PC, is in fact a Canon MX860 Printer serving the "old" 21' iMac-- thankfully, our recently acquired Epson XP-410 serving the "new" 27' iMac is identified as such. And despite the time spent, a few valuable things occurred along the way, including a firmware update related to the Time Capsule... learn by doing, I guess. Thanks again.

HT202213 I have suddenly been unable to connect my computer to my apple tv. I have turned on my home sharing in itunes but it still does not show an icon in the sidebar. I have reset my apple tv and redone all the passwords and email info and still does

I have had my apple tv for 2 years and until I updated it I had no problems. Now it keeps telling me to turn on my home sharing in iTunes which I have done innumerablre times. It won't recognise my macbook pro so I reset my apple tv to original settings and still it won't work. Any ideas??????

Content not lining up in the sidebar with the content located in the main area?

Hello, I’ve created a website using Dreamweaver CS4 and have come across an issue while using a template. The template I’m using is: 2 column fixed, right sidebar, header and footer. The problem seems to be in the sidebar where the content does not start at the top, it seems to be about 15px below the content in the main area. I can't find any CSS or any reason why it's starts where it does. It seems to look like even and as it should in Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari but not in IE9. The page is live at www.Lots2Homes.com and you'll see the content is lower in the right sidebar than in the main area to the left. The code for the home page and CSS is below. This has me going in circles, any help or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Your template contains an IE Conditional Comment that is adding 30px of top padding to #sidebar1. This padding may required in older versions of IE but not IE9.

To fix it, change [if IE] to [if lt IE 9]

How can I get the favorites from my favorites tool bar to open in the main window and not the sidebar?

I created a favorites toolbar. When I click on some of the icons, they open in the main window like I expect. Others open in a sidebar which I do not want and cannot even get to full size. How do I get all of them to open in the main window?

Generally, Bookmarks that open in the Sidebar are from links that you clicked on on web sites to add their Bookmark. To change that, right-click on the Bookmarks, opening in the Sidebar, choose "Properties" and un-check "Load this bookmark in the sidebar".

How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar? Transferred info from my Mac Pro desktop computer (using target mode) and there were folder icons on the Mac Pro Finder sidebar that are now on the MacBook Finder sidebar, even though these folders do not exist on the MacBook. Tried to drag them off, which is the usual way to get rid of folders that the user adds to the sidebar (as opposed to those that can be added via the Customize Toolbar dropdown menu) but was unsuccessful. I then unchecked all of the Customize Toolbar menu items and the folder icons still remained. What else can I do?

Did you hold the Command (Apple) key while dragging them off the sidebar? That usually makes them go *poof*.

If you made a backup before you restored it you can restore your iPhone from a backup and your game data should be restored. When you connect your iPhone in iTunes you can right click on it in the sidebar and select restore from backup.

ctrl B shows the menus.
ctrl S shows the sidebar.

Hey everyone,
I'm setting up a couple laptop labs for a school with Leopard and have run into a couple minor issues.
I created a standard user and configured this user as I would like future user profiles to be like. I then copied the Library and Documents folders of the user into the default user template (/System/Library/User Templates/English.lproj/). Everything worked as expected, except for the following...
1) When a user logs in (Active Directory), their dock contains the Documents and Downloads stacks along with Time Machine. I do not want them! I had removed all three from the user I used as a template, but for some reason they seem to still appear with new users. What I would like is a 100% empty dock (minus the Finder and Trash of course). The dock will be populated via Workgroup Manager.
2) Mounted network shares do not show up via the Finder's sidebar. This makes it a little confusing for users to save to folders on these shares as they have to navigate to them a bit differently than they do in Tiger. I had drug all the shares I wanted onto the side bar, but it seems this does not stick once you log out.
3) The Time Machine icon appears in the menu bar. I had gone into System Preferences under the user I used as a template and unchecked "Show Time Machine status in the menu bar" but this does not seem to apply with new users.
They're all relatively minor issues, but if anybody has any suggestions I'd love to see if I can fix them!
Here is a little background on how the machines are set up: The machines are all managed via Workgroup Manager. The Open Directory server is running 10.4.11, but I seem to be able to control the Leopard specific settings by using the Leopard version of the Server Admin tools without any problems. All our users come from Active Directory. If you need any more info, let me know!

yes, i see I replied way before you were finished with this. as you are dealing with a server you might be better off posting in the [OS X server|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96] forum.
I don't understand why your modified dock doesn't stick. i actually have done exactly what you describe in the past with the user template folder and the modified dock was displayed correctly. all you really need for the dock is one file:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
when I copy this file for my current user to the template directory, all new users have the same dock as I do now. same with the sidebar. the file there is
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
I don't think there is a way to keep connected servers in the sidebar once you disconnect. You could create aliases to them while connected and stick aliases in the sidebar.

Is there any way to change the font size of the text in the Finder Sidebar?

This may sound like a bit of a dorky question but here goes nothing...
I am rather near-sighted and in need of new glasses but I am stuck in a holding pattern until I can get a referral to see my eye doctor. Anyway... I have found myself using the Zoom features far more often and increasing the font size in the Finder for the Item Names & Info.
The problem that I am facing now, is that the font size of the text in the sidebar is FAR SMALLER than the font size of the text of the actual file names & info.
+*IS THERE ANY WAY TO INCREASE THE FONT SIZE OF THE TEXT IN THE SIDEBAR??*+
So far I have looked in:
*The Finder Preferences
*The Desktop Preference Pane
*The Appearance Preference Pane

And to add to my frustration I have also searched the Mac OS X Help AND all of the posts in this thread (back to 1/1/09) that had the word "sidebar" mentioned in them!!

Usually, Apple is really very good about foreseeing any possible trouble (ESPECIALLY when it comes to the area of Accessibility for people w/ disabilities!!)
I do hope that SOMEBODY can help me on this one!!
Also, I noticed that the size of the text that is on the Toolbar is also the same ITSY BITSY font size as the text on the sidebar, but I am guessing that there is next to nothing that can be done about that!!
