Info window Permission limits in Leopard?

In the Sharing & Permissions sections of Info windows in Tiger -- you could select almost any group (such as wheel or staff) or a user (such as System) and assign that group as the Group ID or that user as the owner ID.
This ability appears lost in Leopard. For example, I have a file that lists myself as owner with no group assigned but I want to change the owner to System with the wheel group assigned. I know I can do this in Terminal. But I prefer to stay out of Terminal if I can.
Is there a way to do it from the Leopard GUI?

AFAICT, you can add groups via Accounts. However, your best bet is to review

  • What happened to the bunch of permission groups in Leopard?

I feel like I'm limited due to Apple's choice to make the permissions area in the "Info" windows simpler. Or perhaps these many permission groups were removed for some other reason, maybe they were superfluous (I have never needed to use them until now).
Anyway, I'm trying to get my Ethernet-connected Windows XP PC to have rw permissions on my "Public" folder without giving those permissions to other users on my Mac.
So I remembered that (at least in Tiger) there was a long list of permission groups, and likely one of them would be something like "Network" or "Ethernet" or something, just a group that would fit my connected PC but not other user accounts on my Mac.
But it seems like in Leopard I don't have this list anymore. I can only add other users on the Mac to the permission list. The only group that is available to me is "Administrators".
    Compare:
    "Info" window on Tiger:
    Available permission groups on Tiger:
    "Info" window on Leopard:
    Available permission groups on Leopard:
Please tell me what options I have and if there are any tricks. Thanks in advance for your help!

You are totally right, this is the first time I'm doing something like this; the first time I'm setting up a network between two computers, let alone two computers with different OS.
But I definitely looked at my sharing preferences and tried things out. But I don't want to create another drop box. I want to turn the Public folder into a read-&-write folder for the connected PC without changing the regular read-only permissions for other Mac users.
So essentially both Mac users and PC users should be able to read the Public folder. Both will also be able to write to the drop box. But only the PC will be able to also write to the Public folder.

  • What happened to "next" option in Track Info window?

When I needed to edit Track names for a whole album, I used to right click the first track, select Get Info, then type in what I needed.  When finished with one song, I would hit the "next" at the bottom of the window, and when I was done with all the tracks, I hit OK.  Now, once I upgraded to iTUNES 11.0.1.12, I noticed that I could still edit multiple tracks at once, but I could no longer go from track to track within the Info window, which I hate.  I have to hit okay, then right click, select get info, etc over and over for many songs.  Why did the next option go away?  It's wicked stupid and an inconvenience.  I thought maybe it was a hidden menu now, and not automatic like other options (sidebar, the menu bar etc) but I have yet to find a solution to this.  Any help please?? Editing music is so slow and tedious work now!
Also, while I'm at it, every time I open iTunes, I must re agree to terms and conditions, skip the walkthrough, and reauthorize my accounts EVERYTIME I boot up my computer and open iTunes.  I mean--what the heck is with that??  And since it isn't fullscreen, when I hit maximize, it maxes to outside of my screen limits, so I can't see the scrollbar or the tops and sides of the screen to drag it to size.  I never had these problems until last month when I upgraded to the newest iTunes. So yeah, please, somebody help me!!!  Thanks in advance!

  • Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard

I bought a new iMac Oct 26. It contained Tiger, and included a disk for installing Leopard. I easily got the machine up and running using Tiger, but last night I attempted to install Leopard. When the installation was complete, I tried to get it running. A screen asking for my password came up. I keyed that in and hit logon. Back came the screen asking for the password. To make long story short, I tried everything I could last night, and then called Apple Support this morning. Took quite a while, but I was back in business this afternoon. The technician who helped me sent me the email copied below describing the solution. Perhaps it will help someone else? Romelle
    Hello from Apple!
Charles at Apple Service & Support thought that you might find this article useful. We hope that it helps resolve your technical issue.

Mac OS X 10.5, iMac (Late 2007): Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard
    Issue or symptom
After installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a 20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer, you may not be able to log in at the login window. Your login name and password are apparently accepted, but after a blue screen appears for a few seconds, the login window reappears instead of your desktop.
    Products affected
    20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processors
    Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
    Solution
    If Leopard is installed
Start up from the Leopard Install DVD and perform an Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings).
After the Archive and Install is complete, you should be able to successfully log in. Use Software Update to install any other updates.
Important: Install the iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard after the Archive and Install is complete.
If Leopard is not yet installed
If you have not yet installed Leopard on your 20-inch or 24-inch aluminum iMac computer with a 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processor running Mac OS X 10.4.x, but previously installed the iMac Software Update 1.2, you should install the iMac Software Update 1.2.1 (Tiger) or later, before installing Leopard.
    Thank you,
    Apple

If Leopard came pre-installed and this is a new machne, then the disks that came in the box should let you archive install preserving users & network settings. The disks have a grey label, and if you get more than one use disk #1 for this procedure.
Hold down the "option" (also known as "alt" on the new keyboards) key when starting up with disk #1 in the optical drive. Select the install disk icon on the grey screen and click the arrow. Then when you get to the "select destination pane, click the options button after selecting your hard drive as the destination. In options A& I preserving should be checked by default, if not, select them. Click "ok" to dismiss the options pane, then run the installation.
If this does not work for you, call apple support. They want everything to work. Be patient, they are real busy these days.

  • All my hard drives (internal and external) have a small lock in the lower left corner of the icon and I don't have permissions to access. Permissions are set to 'Custom' in the get info window and I can't change them.

All my hard drives (internal and external) have a small lock in the lower left corner of the icon and I don't have permissions to access. I have 3 user accounts set up and I cannot access any of them.   Permissions are set to 'Custom' in the get info window and I can't change them. Originally I had Snow Leopard installed on one hard drive and 10.5.8 installed on another.   I started to have some problems accessing data between them and so I tried changing the permissions on ONE hard drive partition.   The next thing I know, all my drives are locked (except the ones with the systems on them), the small lock appeared in the lower left corner of the drive icons and I don't have permissions to access any of them.   In the get info window, permissions are set to 'Custom' and I can't change them.

There is suddenly a lock icon on my external backup drive!

  • File info window freezes

My new computer has Yosemite 10.10.3 and I'm happy to say Elements 6 works with it.  But when I wanted information about a picture something happened that does not seem right.
I opened the picture and went to File / File Info.  A window opened that asked for information about the picture.  The problem is that as soon as I clicked anywhere int he File Info window it froze.  Nothing happened.  Everything else seemed to continue working but when I clicked on the picture behind the file Info window, it did not come to the front.  I had to close photoshop to get rid of the file info window.  Is this problem common or perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
Also, sometimes I need to know the date a picture was taken.  I thought there was a way to find that from file information on the computer but I don't remember how.
    Thanks for your help.
    Bob

    Hello A
Have you tried creating a new account and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
Open System Preferences > Accounts > "+" make it an admin account.
If this works, then log back into your problem account and navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
    Let us know.

  • Can't write to Desktop ƒ; contradictory permissions info in the Get Info window

I don't have write permission for my Desktop folder.
In the folder's Get Info window, under Sharing & Permissions, it reports a contradiction:  it says "You can only read," and at the same time under Privilege it says I have "Read & Write" access. If try I use the popup menu to change "Read & Write" to something else, it goes right back to "Read & Write" upon releasing the menu.  At any rate, "You can only read" is the correct part of the contradictory info.
My account is an Admin account.  I am typing the correct password to unlock the fields in the Get Info window.  I've tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility, and that didn't help.
A user named bennarsson reported the exact same problem in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3039851?start=0&tstart=0
baltwo responded that "If you've selected your Desktop folder, then something is extremely wrong if it says You can only read, while showing you under name with read and write privileges."  No kidding!  Other than that, bennarsson didn't get any solution to the problem.
Any ideas?  It's pretty frustrating not being able to modify anything in my Desktop folder!

Try this. Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities, copy & paste this this command into TextEdit, substitute your actual username for the placeholder, copy and paste it into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. So if your username was mike, it would be sudo chown -R mike:admin ~/Desktop
    sudo chown -R username:admin ~/Desktop
When the Password: prompt pops up, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. That should do it.

  • Info window and file sizes

I've been transitioning into Lion for about half a day now and most new features are welcome.  However I can't figure out why the info window displays the size of a file in bytes then displays it in Gigabytes, megabytes etc.  How on earth is this easier to read?  Is this perhaps a bug and not an improvement??
    For Example:
Lion: 7,043,089,832 bytes (7.07 GB on disk) for 13,115 items
Snow Leopard:  7.07 GB on disk (7,043.......bytes)
I apologize if it seems very nitpicky but it takes about two seconds more to figure out the files attributes (and I use the info window quite a bit).
I suppose I could open the infowindow nib file with interface builder and swap them (the filesize templates) but a hassle...anyone else annoyed/confused with this new layout??
    Thanks!

In all honesty it looks the same to me as always,  but I will take your word on it.
I see it as a non issue.
There are many instances of the nuances of calculating differences if you want to be pedantic:
    df -h

    df -H
    DESCRIPTION
The df utility displays statistics about the amount of free disk space on
the specified filesystem or on the filesystem of which file is a part.

         The following options are available:
-a      Show all mount points, including those that were mounted with the
                 MNT_IGNORE flag.

  • Show File Info window disappears before I can change permissions on it.

I am trying to access a Pages document in a file sharing arrangement, but Pages won't allow me to access it.  I checked permissions and need to add permissions, but the Show File Info window closes before I can do anything to change permissions.

    J,
Not to dodge the issue, but you are having an OS problem, not a Pages problem. If nobody comes along here with an explanation, you might do well to post in the Snow Leopard discussion area, assuming your profile is correct.

  • What  does "Group" mean in get info windows?

    Hi
What does "Group" mean in get info windows?
and what do the numbers mean when i click other...?

The group is the Unix group to which the file belongs. Every group has a numeric identifier (the gid) as well as an (alphanumeric) name. The numbers you see when you choose "other" in the drop-down menu which selects the group, are the gid's.
For example, an administrative account obtains administrative permissions by virtue of being a member of the "admin" group. Although the folder /Applications is owned by the user root, it is also owned by the group admin which has been given write, as well as read permission. This write permission is precisely what allows any member of the admin group--that is, any administrator of the machine--to drag applications into /Applications. On my computer, the admin group has gid 80, and so that is what I see as the number next to "admin" under "other".
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupidentifier%28Unix%29 for more explanation of groups.
Message was edited by: Mr.Lobotomy to clarify that "other" is still referring to a "group" option, and not to the permission given to "others".

  • ICal Get Info window is not showing up

I installed Leopard today (did an archive and install). All applications seem to be working fine except for one issue with iCal.
I cannot bring up the new "Get Info" window for any events. When I do "Get Info" on an event, the iCal window becomes inactive as if a new window is coming up, but the new window never shows up. Is anyone else seeing the same issue?
Strangely enough, if I do Expose or Spaces then the Get Info window becomes visible. As soon as I come out of Expose or Spaces then it disappears again! Is there any way to troubleshoot this issue or is this a software bug?
    Thanks,
    Sangjin

    Sangjin,
Since I do not yet have Leopard, I will speculate about solving your problem.
Very often Tiger ICal display anomalies can be rectified by refreshing your iCal plist file and it should also apply to the Leopard version. This can be accomplished by quitting iCal and dragging the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior. You can delete the iCal plist file on your Desktop if iCal returns to normal behavior.
    Let us know what happens.

  • Can you see a image in the Get Info Window?

After upgrading to Mt LIon and while using CS6, I can't see image previews in the Get Info window.  Can't see images in the upper left corner of the get info window, so I can't make a selection and then do a copy- paste like I could do before I upgraded to Mt Lion with CS6.  I want to be able to paste a image of the subjects in my folders..  IE folder of Panda Bears would have a image of a Panda showing on that folder.  Folder of The Great Wall would have a image of the Great Wall on the Folder of Great Wall pictures.  This has always worked for the past many years I have used a Mac and Photoshop.  I started with Photoshop 2.  All my photo folders are represented by images so I have a good idea of what is contained in each folder.  Now after 2 weeks in China, 20 folders are represented by 10-11-12, 10-12-12, 10-13-12, 10-14-12 and so on.  Shows me nothing but dates.  I have tried saving as Jpeg, Tiff, and PAD, and still can't  do a copy-paste in the Get Info window.   Apple says it is a Adobe problem, Yesterday Adobe told me it is because I am uusing a Nikon D800 and Adobe does not have a  patcdh for the NEW Nikon camera.  I then tried using my Nikon D2Xs, Nikon D3X, Nikon 800 and even my wife's D50 and none of these camera allow me to copy paste the thumbnail image to the clipoboard like I have been able to do for YEARS...   I can see images in a folder in Bridge, but the images dont show in my desktop folders.IE, a folder on my desktop with 200 pictures only show with words/ numbers/letters NO IMAGES appear in the folders on the desktop.  On some folders the folders in a folder don't show up as Folders either.
Can Any one help me.  Same thing happens on my MACPRO w 16 GB Ram and on my 17" MacBook Pro.

Thanks for your input.  Problem might be with the EASTER BUNNY..... have to have someone to blame.
I can't blame you for saying that.
Adobe is the clear owner of the responsibility to make functional their product that they claim is compatible with your operating system.  Adobe is the one who sold you the product.
I just went looking for what Adobe has said about Mountain Lion compatibility, and they both list Mountain Lion as compatible and include such language as that on this page (emphasis mine):
Adobe and Apple have worked closely together to test Adobe® Creative Suite® 5, 5.5 and CS6 editions and individual products for reliability, performance and user experience when installed on Intel® based systems running Mac OS X Mountain Lion (v10.8). Earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop® (CS3 and CS4) software were also tested with Mountain Lion and there are currently no known issues.
I suggest that Adobe needs to get on the ball and get this fixed.  The time for user patience is over.
If someone from Adobe is saying "Adobe can't fix it" then that someone is at the wrong authority level and/or is thinking on the wrong level.
This is business and the business is making products that have value and are sold to people who perceive that value.  Adobe doesn't get to keep selling products that don't work while standing on principles that "it's someone else's problem".   Customers don't care why it doesn't work.
It's obvious to a child that if Photoshop CS5 can write the proper things to the Apple OS so that the thumbnails are visible, that there's something Adobe could do to fix it.
But EVEN IF this were something only Apple could fix, that Apple hasn't fixed it yet says pretty loudly that Adobe isn't making the right overtures to Apple for their mutual benefit.  Adobe, are your executives so greedy that they can't grease a few palms of their friends over at Apple to put some priority on this?  What's the problem here?  Has Adobe actually forgotten how to do business?
    -Noel
P.S., You should know that I don't use a Mac and am personally having no issues with seeing proper thumbnails and previews on my Windows 7 and 8 systems, since the software that does that isn't from Adobe.

  • The latest version of Pages does not allow a Pages document to become a 'stationery pad'!  Is there a way to do this this other than through the 'Get Info' window?

The latest version of Mavericks does not allow a Pages document to become a 'stationery pad'!  Is there a way to do this this other than through the 'Get Info' window?  As Pages templates cannot be ordered in folders, my many templates are effectively unusable now and I need to find another way to order and access them.

Are you aware of that you can still use Pages 09 on Mavericks? You don't have to go thru the grieves of using the crippled Pages 5. Pages 09 should bi in Applications/iWork 09 folder.

  • How can I add to the options automatically appearing in Get Info window?

Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to change the options in the Get Info window to show more of them? For example, as well as Album Name, Artist, Composer, Genre, date I'd like to have Grouping and Comment come up each time. At the moment, for each album I import I have to go to Edit>View Options and then add them. It is getting to be a drag. I tried ticking them in Library>Show Columns but that doesn't seem to bring them up in the Get Info window. And yes, I do regularly want to add the same comment to every track on the album!

    Mike,
Thank you, your info has been very helpful and I think I have followed you (wouldn't it be nice if English were less vague?) - selecting multiple items had me a little stumped - do you mean that I go to, say, Library, and highlight an album and then CMD-I means I that exactly all the things I wanted come up? I did this a few times and it works fine. But I'm not sure if that is actually what you meant. Maybe there is another way of selecting multiple items that I haven't yet cottoned on to? You can tell I'm not very good at this, I really appreciate your help.
