Infomercials

I continue to have an infomercial start playing and can find no way to stop it without logging off and logging back in. Whatever it is it doesn't use itunes or any of my running programs. How can I get rid of this problem?

Verizon To Add More .Tv Channels. Sony Movie Channel To Be Added.

Verizon is set to add more .tv channels where two of them are on their way. Legacy .tv a .tv channel from byron allen's entertainment studios will be added to the fios guide and another channel called "justice central .tv" is on its way where it is expected to be made available for fios customers soon. Justice central .tv is a channel that is all about court tv shows where what viewers will have an opportunity to watch are programs like "we the people with gloria allred" where she dishes out her own brand of justice to people who appear in her courtroom. It is a channel that will be all about judges yelling at plantiffs and defendants that will also have a lot of infomercials. That will make it 8 .tv channels where byron allen is also looking to create more .tv channels for verizon to add to their lineup since he has a contract with verizon to add any channel that he has to the fios guide. For the record verizon has entertainment studios .tv, pets .tv, recipe .tv, comedy .tv, my destination .tv, and cars .tv which won an emmy for "outstanding lifestyle program." Another channel that is on the way is the sony movie channel in hd where sony has already confirmed that the channel will be added in the next 2-3 months to the fios guide. Now i have never seen anyone make any requests for .tv channels and i have never seen anyone say that they wanted more of them to be added but that is going to change soon where not only will there be 8 but maybe by the end of the year there may be a total of 10,11,12 or maybe even 13. It all depends on how fast byron allen can create these channels because clearly verizon is willing to add as many of them as they can. There is a really long list of channels that fios customers have been asking for to be added to the guide where the competition has added them so it is not an outrageous request to ask verizon to at least match what the competition has to offer.

How do I prevent "are you sure?" pop-up when trying to exit a web page?

The "are you sure you want to leave this page?" pop up whenever I try to exit a web page is driving me crazy. There must be a way to prevent it but I've found no solution. One reply to the forum called it the "onbeforeclose" and suggested it might be eliminated in the "about:config" part of Firefox, but searching "about:config" I found no such entry. What can be done to stop this highly irritating pop up and prevent it from ever appearing again?

My problem is that none of the suggestions other than completely shutting off JAVA will stop the problem.
It is very annoying to go to a site and try to leave, and even try closing the browser and not be allowed to due to a running script.
The only way I have found out of it is to unplug the internet connection, and restart the computer. When I get the prompt about oops etc about not knowing what to do either go back to the site that gave me the problems or start over. I start over, then connect the internet.
I and others should not need to go though this with ransomeware such as the FBI attack that says it will unlock your system for $200. Or the numerous infomercials that also will no let me and many others go. This problem is also in Internet Explorer, and a few other browsers.
What does it take to keep these scripts from allowing people to leave a page or close the browser? Me and many more want to know, and because the problem exists I have OPERA as a backup browser as it does not get hijacked, but it does not have the ability to have the features and add ons that are available for FireFox.

Apple TV a new paradigm

My Apple TV does what it says it does and is useful. However I think it is a miss. I also have my Powerbook hooked up directly to a projector and using a wireless keyboard and mouse. I looked over the back shelf in the theater where the projector sits. I had a DVR, a Direct TV HD receiver, a 4 way HDMI switch, a Playstation 2 and an Apple TV, a mixboard and a sound line switch. The DVR is redundant with the laptop drive. I will limit my HDTV watching to watching a window driven by my Escape "myTVPVR" and I know it can only use S video as HD content is blocked outside of the satellite receiver. The HDMI switch seems to be incompatable and looks scrambled when trying to pass a signal. All these components and cables and switches plus a sound system requiring a preamp, scaler, and more switches are only there because the general purpose computer that could be doing all of the sound conditioning, scaling, conversion, dvd playing, recording, burning, sound and video switching, scheduling, is being factored out of the architecture of what should really be a home network server using the home theater as its foundation. With this set up and Leopard to manage multiple spaces on multiple screens using a bluetooth mouse and keyboard as the ultimate "remote" and the ability to go to a webpage and zoom the projector screen onto a small web video window to fill the screen. If you make a spreadsheet of the costs involved for dedicated components versus a full computer centric architecture, you immediately see that it is cheaper to do the computer centric architecture which doubles as the home server to which you also attach a large hard drive, printer, scanner. Cost are further reduced if you implement "network-over-power line". That solves the problem of distributing bandwidth throughout the home without signal drop or interference and better security. A brilliant move for Apple would be to make a "Wii" remote pointer device and use it to control the screen cursor. You could call this the "couch mouse", has a nice ring to it. This would allow control of the full OS X GUI or an icon based program like "Front Row". The cost of good sound would be greatly lowered if, say Bose, made a line of speakers with a built in power amp tailored exactly to the drivers, which get their channel sent to them via the power line network signal. This is an instant multi-room, multi-channel sound system which currently requires expensive dedicated components. Apple need to educate the public that this is what they need and that home networking is now simple enough for non-IT types. The campaign would have the slogan: "It's time to bring the network home".

This is a rework and clarification of my original post that opened this topic.
The Apple TV needs to be transformed from a separate appliance to become a powerful general pupose home server. The "digital hub" done right and for real.
It would take the form of an enhanced Mac Mini with all the ports, WiFi N, Bluetooth, Express card slot and GPU found on a MacBook pro, adding HDMI 1.3 output and input as well as adding a dedicated converter with component and S video in. There would be a matching, separate optical drive so you could roll with the punches on the format wars.
As the home server, home theater functionality is only one node.
Nothing in the above requires any dramatic change to existing hardware and software, however three innovations would "knock the ball out of the park".
1. Control a screen cursor with a "Wii"-like controler. Call it the "Air Mouse" or "Couch Mouse. It would have a scroll ball and 4 buttons like the Mighty Mouse. Make it possible to have several of these devices independently move different unique cursors with their own icon. I'll leave the gaming possibilities to your imagination. Pair this with the existing Bluetooth keyboard but enhance it with LED backlighting that times out after the last touch.
2. Implement the home network as "signal-over-power-line". This could provide higher bandwidth throughout the house without interference, signal loss, with less range away from the house as a security point. This new network-over-the-power-lines would obviously be built-in to the "Super Mac Mini" server described above. Any device is on the network simply by plugging it in for power. A "paper station" for a scanner and printer could be placed anywhere. A power-line-signal to WiFi converter brick could be placed in any room to tie in MacBooks and iPhones.
3. Build or partner with Bose to build home theater speakers with built in power amps tailored to optimize the driver/enclosure. When it's plugged in it takes its signal from the power line network per #2 above. A power-brick sized converter could change the network signal to an analog feed for any speaker that doesn't have this feature built-in. Typical 5.1 or 7.1 signal wire clutter and welding cable speaker wire would be a thing of the past.
It would be ideal if projectors and large monitors were compliant with the 1920 x 1200 resolution common to computers or at least give a choice of resolution within OS X at the more common "TV" resolution of 1280 x 768 or 1920 x 1080. Right now OS X will not scale exactly to a "TV" display.
Backup would be through a central drive on the power line network and "Time Machine" should be fixed to work with central network storage and enable backup to multiple clients.
With this architecture any ad hoc node in the network can stream or store audio, video and text and control home security and automation if authorized.
It should be pointed out also that with this architecture, the "TV" large screen, and Mac Mini Server can be placed on a rolling A/V cart and moved anywhere in the house and set up merely by plugging in one power cord. Any tie-in to a cable or satellite box is done with an adapter feeding it to the power line network.
The trick here is to make home networking so simple, intuitive, standardized, accessible that the consumer experiences the ease of an iPhone.
This would have to be introduced with advertising similar to the 1984 Mac TV spot and infomercials that demonstrate how easy this all is. It would show a huge garage sale for all the discrete devices and cables you could now remove. It would show a breakdown of the system cost for the server components versus the discrete component costs and emphasize that this system provides the home theater, home computer, and expands easily to include home security and automation.
Obviously this network expands by adding iMacs, iPhones, Macbooks as ad hoc network nodes. Perhaps some elements of OS X Server would appear in plain vanilla OS X automating through icon based diagrams with each icon representing a node and that icon right clickable to adjust settings.
The current pile of remotes for each component are banished forever. The theoretical universal remote control becomes a reality.
The catch phrase of the campaign could be; "It's time to bring the network home".

Video Out on iPhone 4

I have Apples audio and video out cable adapter. One end plugs into the dock connector, the other end has left and right audio out, and composite video out.
When I use this cable adapter with my iPod, all videos play perfectly on any television set. However, when I use the same cable on my iPhone 4 I get audio but no video.
I suspect that Apple has crippled the video out for some reason. Please tell me I'm wrong.

PHP script...where do I put my variables???

I'm working on a PHP script and I've got the fill in parts working but just cannot get my head around the drop down menu and radio buttons. I tried typing in the drop down menu pieces in the "$body" part of it but then all it did was send me everything. If the sender only wants one thing from the drop down menu, I only want to see what the customer wanted. Not what is in all the menu. From email to phone seems to work good but I guessed at the pull down "service menu" and also the Name through Comments works in the body portion as well but those pull down and radio parts are not sending. I don't even know what an EOD is and what to type in there or the results part as well. Please help!!

Has anyone else seen this?

I'm just setting up a new Mac Pro to use primarily for video editing. I'll be putting Final Cut Studio on it, but last night I just wanted to try the new iMovie and test a firewire camera. I'm not too happy with the quality I'm seeing using a Canon Elura 100. The video seems to have severe interlace problems in both iMovie and and Photo Booth. Any movement results in strong
scan line fringing on all moving edges. I've never seen results like this on my iMac, so I'm assuming I shouldn't be seeing them here. I'm hoping there's a setting somewhere that needs changing, and it isn't a larger problem of a bad or incompatible video card or other hardware issues.
I already had to take the cinema display back because of a dead pixel right in the center of the screen. I really don't want to have to seek out a similar fix for this interlacing. Is this a fixable issue anyone else has had, or did I make a major mistake choosing the 8800 GT card? I've heard of other issues with it.

First, that's not even close to indicating how the Mercury Playback Engine works or how the Matrox solution would help, nor is it true that you would otherwise need an 8 or 12 core top-of-the-line system in the first place. This is like one of those infomercials that creates a problem for you then attempts to help you solve the problem with their product.
Or kind of like shark repellant for people who are landlocked.
My opinion...if you're using a certified GPU and have a decent quad core system (or better) with a decent amount of RAM, you're getting the MPE goodness and won't likely see any ROI from purchasing additional Matrox hardware.

VOD down every night

I work nights and come home hoping to watch a little TV and then go to bed. Unfortunately when I get home it's mostly infomercials so I rely heavily on VOD. 5 nights out of 7 VOD is not working. I reset everything and still not working. When I go online I always get the message that VOD is down in my area and will be returned usually in the morning. Fat lot of good that does me...I'm sleeping then. I am seriously considering returning to Comcast (I hate Comcast) even tho the $$ is more but if I'm not getting VOD what the hell am I paying for? Please, please fix this Verizon. I've been singing your praises to everyone and I work in a casino....I talk to a LOT of people. Please don't make me go back to Comcast (did I mention I hate Comcast??).

I hate Comcast too - one of the happiest days of my life was calling them to terminate service because I switched to FiOS.
I don't do a lot of VOD myself (especially late night) but haven't seen this problem. I'm curious where you are located and if you have tried unplugging the STB when the problem is happening and the plugging it back in. That can solve some problems... not that you should have to do this, but I am just curious if you tried and that did or did not fix it. That's often my first step at troubleshooting.

Firefox authomatically migrates to an un solicited web site. I have spyware doctor it does not stop it from migrating. What do I do to stop this?

A few minutes after log in to my desired web page, Firefox automatically loads an un requested site, initially it was infomercials about work at home or other unsolicited product pitches. I had some virus problems, so a few weeks ago I bought anti Spyware Doctor, an virus, anti spy-ware software which run constantly.
Initially I only had problems with Windows Explorer, recently this re-direction of my web page is a constant occurrence, some times to disgusting pictures.
What do you suggest? Thanks.

Try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:

Too much Paid Programming

I have noticed since switching from DirecTV to FiOS that there is much more paid programming on channels that I enjoy. What gives??

I certainly hope you're kidding. Verizon has NO control over the program content of the channels (outside of their 30 second promos and local commericals). if you have a problem with infomercials you should be contacting those stations. Verizon is not the one airing infomericals.
Of course you could mean those horrible .tv channels, that when they aren't showing the same program over and over are showing the same lame infomericals on every .tv channel. But then again, Verizon is only carrying the channel (and they are the ONLY ones), they are not dictating the program contents.

WD My Book Duo data forever lost if Drive Enclosure Dies!!

This is a huge issue and needs to be addressed. I have spoken with a data recovery company, they have said that if your WD My Book Duo which has the "AES 256 Hardware encryption" feature, if the drive enclosure dies that your data will NOT be accessible even if your hard drives are in perfect working order. Your data may be fine and dandy on your hard drives but you can not access it. Even if you are able to find and purchase another exact WD My Book Duo and put the drives in that, it will NOT work. This is because the hardware encryption is ALWAYS used, even if you never attempt to use the WD Security app to enable "password" protection. This fact is NEVER made clear in ANY WD documentation anywhere! I hope Western Digital can provide a way in firmware updates to either DISABLE the always on hardware encryption, or to at least give us the ability to EXPORT/SAVE the encryption KEY that the device is using to encrypt the data, and provide for us a SOFTWARE utility which will enable us to use that KEY to read our hard drives even if the "Enclosure" stops working. They assumed like most reasonable users would that encryption is enabled only when a password/key is set not that its ALWAYS encrypted whether you enable password or not. Apparently the "password" you set has nothing to do with the encryption, it is not used for anything other than some firmware locking. This means in reality that Western Digital will be perfectly capable to decrypt ANY WD My Book and access your data even when YOU yourself will not be able to. Yes you can be locked out of your own data but the manufacturer and whoever else they may share their "Decryption KEY/s" with can access your data. So the whole thing about if you forget your password your data can't be accessed is a joke, its not true. Well its true that "YOU" can't access your data but they easily could. They just won't do it for you but if they needed/wanted they can easily bypass the firmware password and also decrypt the hardware encryption. In fact some data recovery firms can do that for you, apparently WD even officially "endorses" some of them, makes you wonder if there's any profit sharing. It seems that perhaps WD has shared certain "knowledge" with these firms that enables them to supposedly retrieve the "Encryption Key" from the WD My Book Duo and give you back access to your data for some BIG $$$. So again, I am asking for WD to please be upfront about these very IMPORTANT issues since there is no clear information anywhere, in fact all the documentation seems to imply that your data is only locked once you've set a password not all the time and with an Encryption Key that only WD has access to instead of us the users. There is a solution to all this as I have already mentioned, either allow through a firmware update the possibility to DISABLE the hardware encryption, and/or provide us a way to Export/Save the encryption pass/key so that we can access our data even if the WD My Book enclosure dies for any reason. Encryption is great and even better when Hardware accelerated for higher performance, but we should be the owners of the decryption Pass/Key for "our" data.

Hi, Thank you for the reply but I am definitely exactly one of those more Enterprise customers and my point is that your implementation is flawed and should be fixed because of course one of the reasons I bought the WD My Book Duo is because of encryption, but I want to own my encryption key and be able to decrypt my own data not have it hijacked. So I'm a little bit confused by your answer, is the official WD response that it acknowledges the worrysome problems I outlined but that there will be no plan to fix these issues? I am an IT consultant myself making recommendations for clients especially dealing with security. How can I recommend to "anyone" to use a product that seems to not care about preventing unnecessary data loss. It is not impossible nor even difficult for WD to fix this problem, to allow customers to access their own data off of their hard drives in case their "drive enclosure" develops problems or 'dies'. As I have already outlined, there are at least two ways or more that WD can fix this: 1. Allow enabling or disabling of the Encryption.And/OR2. Allow Exporting/Saving of the Encryption Key which we can then use with software to decrypt our hard drives in case of problems arising with our drive enclosure. Ideally the solution should include method #2 listed above so that we can enjoy the Encryption feature for which we purchased your products with assurance that we will NOT be locked out of our data for no good reason. I hope WD will consider taking a close look at this issue since it may at some point find itself with a lot of very angry customers when their WD My Book duos or other similar encrypted "drive enclosures" fail and people end up with perfectly functioning hard drives with data on them that they won't be able to access. Looking forward to a solution.

Don't be fooled by the propaganda. It's LIN Media, the parent of WPRI-TV (CBS 12) and WNAC-TV (FOX 64) that's pushing this issue. They've done it with both COX and DirecTV in previous carry renewal cycles. LIN wants to blackmail the carriers into paying to carry the ridiculous sub-channels which are filled with infomercials and syndicated programming that's on dozens of other low-tier cable and broadcast channels. Surprise, surprise - the last two times LIN played this game in the Providence market was when the Superbowl was on FOX and CBS respectively! Screw them and their draconian tactics. If I have to go over-the-air this time, hey, the BOSTON stations - CBS-4 and Fox-25 - cover almost all of RI with no drop-out whatsoever. {word filter avoidance} LIN Media -they screw up FIOS access during the NFL Playoff season and I'll NEVER watch their Providence markets again. CBS and FOX on-demand plus Boston OTA, babay!
