Informatica Vs ODI

Hello All,
I was assigned the task of doing a comparison between Informatica and ODI. Having worked with neither of the tools, I am not sure where to start.
Appreciate if anyone on this forum can provide the list of criteria that is usually taken into consideration when evaluating such ETL tools so I can go about to dig for that info.
FYI, we have Oracle EBS, Oracle EPM Suite, OBIEE in our environment.

Any documentation out there that describes the process of how to upgrade from an existing Informatica ETL to ODI ETL in BI Apps? (A client already has BI apps implemented and wants to switch from informatica to ODI.)

Right now, there is only one BI Apps version which utilizes ODI: 7.9.5.2.
This version is constrained to Oracle EBS sources and contains none of the Siebel mappings for example. There isn't anything official yet (path, process, documentation, tools, etc...) for moving from Informatica to ODI.

ODI 11.1.1.6 with SAP Adapters

Friends,
We are planning to replace our current ETL tool Informatica with ODI. In the current context, Informatica SAP Adapters are working fine extracting SAP data from SAP Tables (SE16) and SAP ABAP Functions (Called from Informatica Interfaces) in stream mode . With current setup, Informatica is able to extract 2 Million Records in 30 minutes.
We are not sure how ODI SAP Adapters work in this regard.
So any inputs on ODI SAP Adapters with regard to :
- Data extraction Performance
- Feasibility of Extraction of SAP Data from SAP Tables and SAP Functions (return dataset)
- Feedback on the stability and scalability of the ODI SAP Adapters

There are two ODI SAP adapters available that allows extraction from SAP ERP and SAP BW. For SAP ERP we allow extraction from ERP tables, but not from RFCs/BAPIs. You can find details on that at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/data-integrator/documentation/index.html The documentation was created for 10g release but still valid for 11g.
In our performance comparison we found significant improvement against competition. The actual performance, of course, depends on many, many things ranging from SAP HW, network, complexity of query etc.

Doubts in ODI

Hi,
I am new to ODI i have some doubts
1) why we need Topology manager ?
2) why we have environments (Start environment) is it mandatory to start the server
3) I created a repository...Where its located in the file structure??
4) Interfaces in ODI means?
5) Difference between Informatica and ODI
IF any one knows about these please clarify because i am in lot of confusion about the terms

Hi Saichand,
Let me contribute a little,
1. For doing transformation you need to have source and target connections right,topology manager is for defining the connections, basicaly to set the connection environment.
2. Not required as the name implies its a demo environment. Once you created repositories you can go ahead in doing transformation.
3. Repositories are not in files structures, its metadata structure. Master / work repositories are stored in your underlying DB ( you can see some tables in your master and work repos locations)
Master : All your topology, security manager works goes here.
Work : All your design, operator works/metadata goes here.
4. Interface is for building mappings, doing transformations but in one interface you can have ONLY ONE target.
5. No idea. :), google.

Implement OBI Apps 7.9.6 with Oracle EBS 12

Hi
I have a couple of questions about the integration of OBI Apps 7.9.6 and Oracle EBS 12
The first is, which ETL tool is used for this integration? Informatica or ODI 11g
And the second is, my client is currently working on Oracle EBS 11 and plans to migrate to version 12, my question here is if the mappings and flows are fully supported version 11 to version 12 of the EBS or what I have to do to migrate?

Hi Luis,
Informatica is being used for the ETL. ODI will be an option when you move to Oracle BIA 11g (Fusion Application).
You should upgrade to the latest Oracle BIA (7.9.6.3) version for Oracle eBS. This prabably means that you have to move to Oracle BI 11g as well.

ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 : What OBIEE Content Would You Like To See?

Hi All,
I'm one of the track chairs for the upcoming ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 conference, in Monterey USA next June. I'm interested in any thoughts any forum members would have on the OBIEE content you'd like to see at the conference, and to encourage forum members to submit abstracts for sessions you'd like to run.
In particular, this year, I'm interested in seeing if there is any interest in more advanced OBIEE features, given that the product has been out for a couple of years now and developers are getting pretty experienced with it. Is there any interest in sessions such as these?
- Performance tuning OBIEE queries (perhaps focusing on federated queries, or where aggregates are used?)
- Clustering, high availability
- Best practices around OBIEE data modeling (the common enterprise sematic layer)
- Experiences around bring OLAP data into the semantic model (perhaps from Essbase or MS AS, maybe in a hybrid arrangement with relational data)
- Integrating OBIEE with other applications (via web services, via GO URL etc)
- Informatica or ODI mappings in support of the BI Applications.

What is BI Apps

Hi -
I am trying to understand what is BI Apps? Can someone explain to me. I know it has pre built dashboards and is similar to DBI. But I am trying to understand how different this is from OBIEE in terms of hardware and licensing. My questions -
Is it bundled with OBIEE?
Is OBIEE required for BI Apps to work?
Or is BI standalone product. I just buy, install and use it?

Basically BI Apps is reporting(obiee) + ETL(informatica or ODI) + Scheduling ETL tool(DAC)
The Answers for your questions are
i, Yes it is budled with obiee and very much required for BI Apps. OBIEE is used just for reporting part in BI Apps.
Depending on BI Apps versions, the ETL can be informatica or ODI(oracle data integrator in BI Apps 7.9.5.2)

ODI vs informatica

Hi All,
We are planning to build a big datawarehouse using ODI.since ODI is a ELT tool it doesn't need seperate engine for data integration.
could someone suggest some answers for my questions .
1) ODI vs Informatica ----- which tool do you suggest for big DWH
2) since ODI uses target database as the engine for data integration, does this going to effect the performance of our DWH to which we will be loading the data. same DWH will act as the reporting instance also.
DWH = report queries load+data integration load(since ODI uses target DB as engine)
how is ODI going to effect the DWH.
If ODI effects the DWH , then do you have any suggestions to avoid this.
If ODI doesn't effect the DWH , could you let me know why?

Thanks for the info.That was helpful.
1) During the initial setup of your ODI environment, did you increase your DWH hardware specs(ODI Engine) by any valuie to accomodate ODI processes.
2) say we have three different environments of ODI ( dev/QA/prod) and DWH(dev/qa/prod).....
Running the ODI jobs during odd hours could be idle in PROD Environment.
but in dev/QA say a tester/developer started a ODI process for testing during regular work hours which uses dev/qa DWH as ODI engine.
During the same time Report developers/testers are also testing some reports which are run accross dev/qa DWH.
Then i think the dev/qa DWH performance will be little bad. Cant we avoid this kind of situation by any means.
and do you think increasing dev/qa hardware specs will siffice the problem.

Can we use ODI with Informatica for Planning and Essbase

If we have Informatica datawarehouse, can I use ODI to integrate with Essbase and Planning ? Or do we need to buy informatica adapters for essbase/planning ?

Thank you John, for your response. We are accessing our options as to which way to go. We dont have licenses for ODI for Essbase or Planning. We have informatica expertise we would like to use them. The confusion is should we buy the adapters for informatica or licenses for ODI. I understand having ODI with Informatica would add an additional integration layer.

Can we replicate Informatica Lookup transformation in ODI Interface?

So was just wondering if we could replicate a lookup transformation in an ODI join of some sort where in only one value is returned for multiple matches of the same item....something like a max for a group or something while joining 2 tables...
So for example I have 2 tables...A columns (Attendee_id,xyx,byx)
B columns (partnerid,attendee_id,xyz,bxc)
I want to join table A and B on Attendee_id and get the partner_id---but I want only one record in case of multiple matches for a particular attendee_id
can we do this??

Running OS command in ODI

Hi all,
We are migrating from Informatica's DIM to ODI. In DIM, we can run the OS command as shown below.

However, in ODI, we try to use OS Command and put it the above codes. It just doesn't work. We know we can put in the code in a shell script file and call it from ODI. But, we just don't want to put everything to shell scripts. Please kindly help. We are running ODI 11g in Unix.

Hi,
I believe, OS command cannot handle all these commands. If you are thinking that anybody can delete the script file and odi will fail to execute then it will be better you create the shellscript file by odi and run it by odi and delete it by odi as well. You can use OdiOutFile here.

1) Lookup tranformation

Hi,
You have to work out your transformations in ODI designer .. "Diagram" and in "Flow" tabs.
Now to do
1. Lookup -- bring up the lookup tables in the datastore by reversing(same like ur source and target tables/views) and drag in the designer along with ur source for transformations. do ur txfm by either drag n drop or post ur query in the "Expression Editor" by selecting the target column.
2. Insert/Update- will be controlled by ur ODI IKM`s (Incrementel Update)
3. I dont know about router Txmf.

Maybe not in 10G but there is LOOKUP functionality in 11G

SQL Override. How to use custom SQL in ODI?

I am new to ODI & have an Informatica background. I am looking for an SQL override capability in ODI. I have an existing SQL which has complex joins, in-line queries, filters, unions & many other complexities. The query reads many existing tables & output 5 fields, which I need to populate in the target table. In Informatica, I would simply create a Target table of these 5 fields, import the same table as both source & target, & then override the source qualifier with the existing SQL. Does ODI have a similar feature?
I know that the same can be achieved using core ODI features, but I am trying to get it done quickly without re-inventing the wheels.

you can not use SQL over-ride feature which informatica has. I am an informatica developer myself. So I can feel your pain. You are gonna miss a lot of features Informatica has. the one you are looking can not be done using ODI Interfaces. But can be done using ODI Procedures. When you create a step in Procedure you would mention the Source and target schema informations/Context Logical Schema info which should do the work for you. If your source and targets are in different Server then create a DBlink between two servers. Now when you put your select query in it put it like an insert query.
