Infosource & Update Rules puzzle

Hi Experts,
I was told that Direct Infosource does not have Update Rules tied to it to update Master data. How true is it? When I update master data, I had generated update rule on the master data object. So, is the 1st statement correct?
Flexible Infosource can contain master and transaction data. Does this mean I can load in one-shot, master and transaction data into the 1 Infosource for both data. That is, same Infosource. And then use update rules (1 per data target) to update the data targets of either cube or master data table? Or is it that u must use 2 infosource?
Are there only 3 types of transfer rules that can be used per infoobject in the communication structure? What about formula, is it considered one of the types?

1. you must have created a flexible infosource for your master data - direct ones do not have update rules.
2. to my understanding, yes, but i believe it is more common to use one infosource updating multiple "recipients", with update rules for each.
3. well, there are supposed to be 4 for each item in the transfer structure - read this one:

Update rules/communication strucuture clarifications

I am really getting confused in figuring out whats finally coming to the data-target or in general mappings. I have a single ods that has 4 update rules from 4 distinct infosources.
q1. what is in my communication stucture ( does it change if there are one infosource as oppose to many). My understanding was that it is a replica of your data target and if thats the case why dont i see some of the infoobjects in my ods even though they are in the communication strucutre and also getting mapped in the transfer rules.
q2. Now with 4 update rules i see in two of them the 0calendar day infoobject is maped to 0calendar day in one and posting date in another one. Also another date feilds(date of confirmation info-object) is being mapped by two different date feilds in each of them one by budat feild and another by calday feild. So my question is whats finally coming in these objects in this particular ods.

Hi Mark,
This is how it is connected:
DataSource->Transfer Structure->Transfer Rules->Communication Structure->InfoSource->Update Rules->Data Target (e.g. ODS)
You will have 1 communication structure per InfoSource. The question on "what's the final data that comes to my ODS" actually depends on what is the structure of each InfoSource (e.g. do they contain similar characteristics and Key Figures), what is the update mode in your update rules (e.g. is it "overwrite", "Add"?), and also the sequence of your data load.

Create two transport requests -
TR1) Collect the InfoObjects (If newly creted or activated from the Business Content), InfoProviders and the Queries if created.
TR2) Collect the Datasource, Infopackages, Transfer Rules, InfoSources, Update Rules, Transformations and DTPs
Transport TR1 followed by TR2.

Error when installing the business content (update rules)

Hi Gurus,
I am trying to install the Business Content for Plant Maintenance. When trying to install the update rules UPDR BN10TVY8N84KARHU2FLSSYL56, I was able to see the update rules in the collected objects. But, when trying to install, it throws an error saying that the update rules is not found.
Could you please help me in resolving the issue and install the update rules successfully.

You should install corresponding neccessary object with it, like update rule data target, and connected infosources also.
infosource -> update rules -> data target
Cross check you have infosoure, and data target installed or not, and if not install all these together.
You can also use grouping option as install all neccesary options. It will collect all neccessary objects.

Urgent....Transported Update rules active version but still not active....

Hi Gurus,
i have changed a datasource and an ODSA
and this ODSA which also acts as a datamart to ODSB
so i have transported, transfer rules, transfer structure, infosource, update rules of ODSA and also the
update rules of ODSB as well
And before realsing the request into quality i have replicated the datasource from R/3 as well and then realsed this request to Quality everything is active like transfer rules, infosource, transfer structure
ODSA update rules
But the ODSB update rules are not active kindly tell how to make them active.
so again i have regenerated the export datasource and then again i transported only update rules of
ODSB.
but still the update rules are inactive, kindly someone guide me how to make them active
as i have to send this to production which is having 4 years of historical data so please kindly
help me.

A.H.P i have manually activated the update rules its working fine, so i am praying that everything should be fine in production as i have requested to have permissions to activate in prd as well

Cannot Create Update Rule from Infosource to Cube

Hello;
I am a beginner to BI and am learning. This may be a very basic question, but I got stuck.
In the create update rule screen, I get an error message that says
Data Source (whatever the name is) not maintained. (check your entries)
Could some one help as to where I went wrong?

Goto your InfoSource and open DataSource Structure and transfer structure. Check if the structure is correct, make the necessary changes if required and activate it. Then create update rules providing correct infosource name. Until you create /activate your transfer structure, you won't be able to create update rules.

Update Rules in ABAP to consolidate two InfoSources into one ODS?

Hello experts,
I want to solve the following problem with ABAP update rules (I am a novice in ABAP):
In an Oracle DB I have two tables TRANSACTIONS and PARTICIPANTS with an 1:n relationship:
One or many PARTICIPANTS can be assigned to one TRANSACTIONS and
one TRANSACTION can be assigned to one PARTICIPANT.
I want an ODS that contains TRANSACTIONS with the number of male and female PARTICIPANTS of each transaction.
So I created two InfoSources each representing one of the above tables:
IO_TRANSACTION with COMM_STRUCTURE:
TRANS_ID
TRANS_DATE
TRANS_STATE
IO_PARTICIPANT with COMM_STRUCTURE:
PARTIC_ID
PARTIC_TYPE (1=male and 2=female)
TRANS_ID
Now I want to consolidate all male participants into the data field PARTIC_M
and all female participants into the data field PARTIC_F of the following ODS:
Key fields:
TRANS_ID
TRANS_DATE
TRANS_STATE
Data fields:
PARTIC_M (number of male participants)
PARTIC_F (number of female participants)
I tried it with the following lines of ABAB Code in the ABAP routine
for the datafield PARTIC_M:
IF COMM_STRUCTURE-/BIC/PARTIC_TYPE = 1.   " 1 is the value for "male"
   RESULT = 1.
ELSE.
   RESULT = 0.
ENDIF.
But after loading both InfoSources into the ODS the fields PARTIC_M and PARTIC_F are empty!!
Do I have to do some kind of joint in a start routine in order to connect Participant Information with a specific transaction?? How?

Thanks for the hint with the common key fields.
My problem is, that both tables have only the field TRANS_ID in common.
So when I update TRANSACTIONS with the three Key fields TRANS_ID, TRANS_DATE and TRANS_STATE
and PARTICIPANTS with the Key field TRANS_ID into the ODS I get data like this:
TRANS_ID, TRANS_DATE, TRANS_STATE, PARTIC_M, PARTIC_F
TR01                                                                        1              1
TR02                                                                        0              3
But I also need the fields TRANS_DATE, TRANS_STATE to be filld with data!
any suggestions?

Simple creation of Update Rule from BW Data Source

Hi guys,
 Pertaining standard SAP Business Content extractors
 I am referring to InfoCube : 0PA_C01(Headcount and Personnel Actions)
 I am attempting to create an Update Rule from Info Source : 0HR_PA_PA_1(Headcount)
 This Info Source : 0HR_PA_PA_1(Headcount) is connected to BW Data Source(Not R/3!) 0HR_PA_PA_1
 I have created an Info Package for this Info Source and managed to get 15 records{In Contrast to my 68800 Records from Info Source : 0HR_PA_0(Employee)}
 So, when I create an Update Rule to Connect Info Cube: 0PA_C01(Headcount and Personnel Actions) to Info Source to Info Source : 0HR_PA_PA_1(Headcount), I get the following error
ERROR : IC=0PA_C01 IS=0HR_PA_PA_1 error when checking the update rules
Could you please also advice, why do I only get 15 records for Data Source 0HR_PA_PA_1 ?
P/S : I am on BW 3.5

 This Data Source: 0HR_PA_PA_1(Headcount) is tricky to me because it`s a BW Data Source.
 Exact Error Message is as follows :-
"Error Message : RSAU461
 IC=0PA_C01 IS=0HR_PA_PA_1 error when checking the update rules "
 My Exact Problem is that I don`t see any values for the following fields in my Info Cube : 0PA_C01(Headcount and Personnel Actions)
Country;
Country Code;
Gender;
Nationality;
Language;
Postal Code;
Region;
Position;
Job;
Payroll Area;
Payroll Group;
Pay Scale's;
Pay Grade's
This is because, this information is supplied by InfoSource : 0HR_PA_PA_1
But I don`t have an Update Rule for this InfoSource in my InfoCube : 0PA_C01
So, that's why I am attempting to create this additional Update Rule
 And also, could someone enlighten me why would SAP not include such a standard Update Rule when they have already idenfied those needed fields in a Cube ? This is suppose to be a STANDARD workable Business Content right ?

A Key figure is missing in Update rule of ODS & Infocube.
But it is listed in infosource ( comm. & transfer structure) of ODS.
Why it is so . Any suggestions.
infosource->ODS_>infocube.

Hi,
I will give the process that I followed (as you specified) now:
1. I deleted the Source System Assignment for the Infosource.
2. Next went to Source Systems. Right click on source system and replicate it.
3. Select the InfoSoucre and assign the Data Source.
4. Here I automatically got the Field(ZZMBGBTR).
5. I added the field in the Communication Structure. and then assigned the Transfer Rules. Next activated the InfoSource.NExt checked the InfoCube for the KeyFigure. That InfoObject ZQTY is available.
6. I activated the InfoCube. Right Click and select Create Update Rules. Still I didnt got that InfoObject.

Fields missing in Update rules

I am creating snap shot DSO for inventory management and after that i created the update rules for it linking it to the info source 2LIS_03_BX. When i do this i am missing the info objects that i created to include in the DSO. How do i solve this issue as those info objects are very important and i have to create the routines for it.
I have got the units for those fields and they are mapped but the info objects itself are missing.

Yes, you can include the missing infoobject in DSO. for that you need to follow bellow steps:
a). Delete the data from DSO.
b). you have to include the infoobject in DSO.
Double click on DSO>select chage mode->select keyfield /data field node--->right click select Infoobject Direct Input.
c). Activate the DSO
Brief Description about 2LIS_03_BX :
The 2LIS_03_BX is used to extract an opening stock balance on a detailed level (material, plant, storage location and so on). At this moment, the opening stock is the operative stock in the source system. "At this moment" is the point in time at which the statistical setup ran for infosource 2LIS_03_BX.Loading the opening stock balance InfoSource 2LIS_03_BX into data target.In the InfoPackage, choose the upload mode u201CCreate opening balanceu201D.

Where is the option "create update rule" in BW 7.3?

We have updated our BI sandbox to BW 7.3. After installing cube 0PT_C01 from the BCT, I realized that infosource 0HR_PT_3 is not linked to the cube. So I was trying to manually create the update rule. But that "create update rule" option is nowhere to be found. Can you please advise?

you are implementing time and labour 0PT_C01.
for that we have only 2 standard data sources
1 is 0HR_PT_1
2 is 0HR_PT_2
in addition to the above data sources we can also use 0HR_PT_3 data source for the info provider 0PT_C01.

Error while transporting update rule.

But it is ending with error code 8 n it is giving me following error :

      IC=0PP_DS03 IS=0CO_OM_OPA_6 error when checking update rules

Hi Swati,
Before transporting the update rule, in the present scenario, you have to transport the infosource which contains the corresponding "0recordmode".
Whenever you transport anything into the quality or production, the list should be as followed in the given manner :
Seq No     Objects in Request
1     Package(DEVC), InfoArea(AREA), Application Component(APCO)
2     Function Modules
3     Keyfigure Catalog(IOBC), Keyfigures(IOBJ), Units(IOBJ)
4     Characteristic Catalog(IOBC), Characteristic Infoobjects(IOBJ)
5     Infosources (ISCS, ISTD, ISMP, ISTS, ISFS, ROUT) and
                Generic Data Sources(DataSrce Active Version(OSOA), ISMP, ISTS,DataSourceReplica (ISFS)
                and Tables (TABL)
6     Infoproviders(ODS(ODSO), Cube(CUBE), Infoset(ISET))
7     Update Rules(UPDR, ROUT)
8     Infopackages(ISIP)
9     Queries(ELEM)
10     Webtemplates(TMPL, BLTM, BPTM)
Just transport all your things in the above sequence, and it will be done successfully.
Also, remember there should not be any data in the corresponding infoprovider while you transfer the update rule, else it will fail.

Error when activating update rule

HI BI Expert,
The original transfer rule for 2LIS_11_VAITM was deleted accidently and I created new one and mapped with the existing infosource. The system always generates the following error at the time of transport to another client.
Error when activating update rule D1GOAPD9O0P9CFOY8KBSOUDFA
Activation of the update rules for ZO_SOP_1 ZT_SOP_SALO_ITM
IC=ZO_SOP_1 IS=ZT_SOP_SALO_ITM error when checking the update rules.
Would you kindly be able to suggest me what steps I need to take so as to correct this issue?

Hi,
When you say that update rule was accidently deleted, was that attached to transport request and transported to your QA & PRD at that time.
Because it may happen that, your old rules are still there in QA & PRD and the new rules are failing to overwrite that.
If it is the case, then you may have to open the client for QA & PRD and delete the existing update rule (doesnt sound good practice though), and then create a fresh update rule and transport.

"Error when activating update rule" after changing ODS key

Hi Gurus,
I have problem when transporting in productive system an existing ODS & the update rule linked. The message is : "Error when activating update rule".
This is when i move one field from the key to a simple field of the ODS.
Before transporting requests, i deleted data in the ODS by right-click on ODS --> Request tab --> select the request --> click on delete....
I don't understand because i did the same in Qual environment and everything is OK : transport request & ODS loading...
Please help.....

Please try to check/perform the following steps:
1- You must ensure for the update rule have mapping between infosources
   and ODS/CUBEs correct, this means that also these objects need
   to be of the same version in the source system of the transport as in
   target system.
2- Please ensure all infoobjects in the cube are active.Please
   reactivate all the objects again in source system.
3- Ensure all infoobjects are found in the communication structure.
4- Please try to collect the update rule via BW transport connection
   with the grouping option "only necessary objects" and then transport
   those objects again.
Could you please reactivate the infocube and its update rules again
and then create a new transport for this infocube and transport it
again.
