Infrared Receiver for 1st gen iMac G5 to work with Remote?

Hello,
My girlfriend gave me a new Apple Remote control but I don't have an infrared reciever in my first generation iMac G5.
Can I get external ones, will they work, where can I get them at a reasonable price (I'm a poor student).
All the best and thanks for the help
Joseph

Thanks for the comments,
I'm not worried about it working with software etc (I have Front Row - best
not say how I got it). My experience of using Macs has taught me that
additional software for running peripheral devices isn't usually required.
I was hoping for information about buying an external IR reciever that could
work through a USB socket or something. I've checked and haven't been able
to find one and thought you guys might know where (online) I might be able
to pick one up.
So there's an IR Reciever in the iPod Dock? If I got one of those could it to operate Front Row or just the iPod?

    Can a 1GB IPod Shuffle (model A1204 - probably 1st Gen) be made to work with a 64 bit computer?  I have never used this IPod which I receivede as a gift in 2008.

    I have been trying to get somewhere with this Internet Security Suite...and now have come to the conclusion this is not going to work.  Now running Vista 64 bit, and have gotten nothing but the run around to try to complete the downloading of the program.  I've contacted Verizon Tech Support...then tell me that this works with the 64 bit but I need to contact Windows as there is a glitch and they give you the steps to get thru it.  Windows advises me to contact Verizon again as there are no problems with the OS.  Also have contacted Radialpoint and once again nothing...Obviously the Secuirty is not compatible with Vista 64 bit yet, which I just can't believe like you said...it's not like it was just yesterday this OS came out.  My frusteration comes from nobody steps up to take any responsibility as to what the problem is.  If it is not compatible yet then say so and not waste my whole weekend trying to get a straight answer.  I have other computers that I am currently using the service on and do like the program, but as for my Vista 64 bit looks like I may go to Macafee for protection.  It just amazes me as big as Verizon is and as popular this Vista has become they are not on the ball in keeping up with technology.

  • Will 1st gen ipod touch still work with new itunes library on new computer (transfer didn't work from old computer)

    Ok, so I have a new computer and wanted to transfer my itunes library from my old computer. I could not get the files to transfer. I downloaded the newest version of itunes and see that I can download my previously purchased music to the new computer. I have mp3's that I can add in on my own so I don't have a problem starting over in itunes.
    My question is what happens when I plug in my 1st gen ipod touch and try to sync??? Will it erase what is on my ipod or will I be able to move the stuff from my ipod into my new itunes library?? Any info would be great...I'm happy with how my ipod is set up so I really don't want to mess with a good thing. Also, will I need to update and of my software on my ipod since it's 1st generation??
    Thanks for the help!!

    You can only sync to one iTunes library/computer. If you do sync the iPod is erases and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the second computer.
    To avoid that see:
    Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
    Yes, the 1G works with the latest iTunes.
    To transfer iTunes purchases:

    In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • Procuring and installing a bluetooth card for 1st gen imac G5

    Hello,
    I'd like to install an internal bluetooth card on my early G5 iMac. Can I do that? And if so, how would I go about it?
    Thank you so much,
    Sincerely,
    Tabeer

    There are three things you need to install the Bluetooth card on the iMac: the card, the antenna, and a small bracket for the end of the antenna.
    I looked on the web just today to find the answer to that and most all said it can not be done. I just installed one on a 1.6 MHz G5 iMac. I piulled the components off a 1.8 MHz G5 iMac.
    You need to be comfortable opening the iMac. I had almost nothing to lose here because my 1.8 MHz failed (capacitors) and I had done quite a bit to try to resurrect it - I had the mother board out of the machine. Interestingly, to do this operation, you actually do less dissassembly than taking the mother board out. The trick is to leave the mother board in the frame, and remove the frame from the case (white thing with the LCD screen).
    More specifically:
    notice that the airport antenna (follow from the Airport card) disappears under the mother board near the lower left corner (face down);
    just below the airport card is where the bluetooth card goes - plugs in w/connector and two screws.
    remove the power supply;
    remove the optical drive;
    remove the hard drive;
    disconnect the LCD panel connector - 2 screws;
    disconnect two connectors on the left side (as you are looking at the thing face down) - one is under the optical drive, and the other you have to follow the cable you just disconnected down under a slender grey plastic component (Airport antenna part?) Take that component out too - 1 screw;
    remove three screws across the top, just below the top edge of the case (white thing);
    remove three more screws - one at each bottom corner (face down) and one mid way up the left side (these screws have coarse wood threads vs machine threads);
    tilt up the metal frame with the mother board attached and lift it out.
    the bluetooth antenna goes through a small "hole" in the sheet metal and then follows a bundle of black and brown wires to the right (face down) - there are 3 or 4 "tabs" made out of the sheet metal;
    there is a distinct bend in the metal frame where a plastic bracket is glued in place and holds the end of the antenna, which has a printed circuit board about 1" long by 1/8" x 1/8".
    It was relatively easy.

  • Airport Card options for 1st gen iMac G5

    I'm about to purchase an Airport Express wireless-N to use as my access point. I have a Fall 2004-purchased G5 iMac. The original one.
    Am I Airport Extreme-ready? Can I buy the Airport Extreme Card to get on the network wirelessly? The distance is way too long to run ethernet connection.
    Alternatively...I have an old Airport Express wireless-G...could just use that as a bridge, plug my iMac into that via ethernet...thoughts?

    Hello,
    Your iMac takes the Airport Extreme (802.11g) card available from the Apple Store. As you can't use N speeds on the iMac G5 why not just stick with the older Airport Express.

  • No video whatsover G5 1st gen iMac

    My friend got this pristeen 1st gen iMac for free at a 2nd hand store outreach center. The HD and ram were missing and a I T tech we thought knew told us that was all it needed. I had no experience with anything Mac but I'm willing to learn. After installing 2 Gb of new PC 3200 400 mhz ram,new Western Digital 320 Gb 7200 rpm 32mb cache Sata hard drive, new apple wired keyboard,new Turtle USB Mac mouse and the brand new OS X Leopard disc and..... no video! I'm thinking this needs a replacement mobo but the mobo and capacitors are all looking great(appears new) so I don't think they're the problem. If I'm missing anything obvious please help. Possibly there's a video card missing and I don't realize it yet. Otherwise I'll be looking for one of those replacement G5 mobo's or a trade plus difference deal for another refurb or used Mac. Any ideas?

    Is it starting up, but with no video? Or is it not starting up? I'm not certain an iMacG5 will handle a SATA disk drive successfully. Another possibility is that whoever had it before saw it die, salvaged the HD and RAM, and junked it. Sometimes you get what you pay for! You could get an external case for a SATA Hard disk, and maybe find someplace that would take the RAM in trade for some that's right for a new Mac, and be ahead to just buy a new one. If you're like me, I HATE to see one bite the dust with no hope of resuscitation!

  • Choppy video playback on my 1st Gen iMac G5

    Everything from internet video to DVD playback on my 1st Gen iMac G5 is choppy and getting more so as time goes on. Can anyone tell me if this is a symptom of the defect that's covered under the extension plan or is this just some other problem?

    Check the version in the Application Folder!
    (I have had no problems at all after installing QT 7.5 on my G5 iMac in case you think it can't work at all.)
    It is possible that something in either your pre-existing setup or your method of installing updates, are the root causes of whatever problems you are having with QT 7.5 particularly with choppy playback. Out of date plug-ins and add-ons could also be playing a part. Some users have found choppy playback to be associated with improperly loaded plug-ins and add-ons from third party vendors as well as those included by Apple with prior versions of Quicktime.
    Third-party add-ons include DivX, Flip4Mac, or FLV components, while the included plug-ins are AppleIntermediateCodec.component, and AppleMPEG2Codec.component. The files for these are located in the root library, therefore a faulty component will load improperly for all users, resulting in choppy playback even when a user creates a new account. Some may need updating or just reinstalling to work with QT 7.5.
    You should therefore:
    Remove and re-add all quicktime components and plug-ins.
    Navigate to /Library/QuickTime/
    Move all plug-in ".component" files from the folder (to the Desktop, for instance)
    Launch QuickTime and quit it again
    Place the ".component" files back in the QuickTime library folder
    Launch QuickTime again, and the choppiness should be better.
    A few more things to try but in each case first close all applications and repair permissions.
    1 Try opening then closing GarageBand, or launching then quitting the "Audio MIDI Setup" application located in Applications/Utilities. Failing that, go back to Audio MIDI Setup, and under the Audio Devices tab, make sure the Audio Output Format is 44100.0 2ch-16bit.
    Restart your Mac.
    2 Go to the Library on your main hard disk and find the Internet Plug-Ins folder. Try removing the following files:
    QuickTime plugin.plugin
    Quicktime plugin.webplugin
    Restart your Mac.
    Re-install the Quicktime 7.5 update
    Go to Home/Library/Receipts and delete the file Quicktime 7.5 pkg.
    Download from the Download page on the Apple site the correct version of Quicktime 7.5 for your Mac.
    Install it and restart your Mac. Repair permissions.
    3 If still no luck, it is time to look carefully at your plug-ins and add-ons. The safest way is to download and re-install all of them. The ones you need in order to see and hear virtually everything the web has to offer are:
    RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
    Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
    Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
    (You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
    You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of all recent Security Updates.
    (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
    In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
    Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
    Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
    Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
    There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
    On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
    On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
    If none of the foregoing worked, then you should consider and archive and install before repeating all of the above.

  • 1st gen imac g5 graphics problems

    Hi-
    I have a first gen 1.8ghz 20" imac g5. About a year and a half ago, the mother board was replaced because of the exploding resistors. Recently, the screen has started intermittently getting pixelly in spots (like it did pre-mo-bo replacement) and then freezing (which is new). It happens every day or two, or sometimes within 10 minutes of booting. It seems to happen more quickly when Safari is up strangely enough...
    I took it to the apple store this weekend and the genius there said that the resistors were not exploding and that the mother board looked good. I haven't seen any drivers for the graphics card available. Wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if there is anything that can be done. A shame to have to do away with this thing...

    HI,
    I too have a 1st gen iMac G5 20". It too recently started showing artifacts on the screen. For example when moving a window parts of the screen would get messed up. The problem became worse to the point where it would get stuck on a blue screen during boot (mouse and pointer still working). I took the cover off and saw three leaking capacitors on the mother board. They were in the group of 5 near the middle bottom of the board. I had them replaced, but unfortunately, this did not fix the problem or improve it in anyway. At the moment I have no idea what the problem is. Is this in anyway similar to your problem?

  • Twitter App. for 1st Gen. iPod Touch

    I recently was having problems with the Twitter App. on my 1st Gen. iPod Touch and so decided to delete the app and re-download it again, like I had done a week earlier. During the download an error message popped up stating that I need ios 6 or later to download the app. Apple had updated the Twitter App on March 10th and I tried re-downloading March 14th, however a week earlier I was offered the opportunity to download an earlier version of Twitter. I am currently only able to use Twitter via Safari. Does anyone out there have a solution to get the official Twitter App. (And no "Buy a newer iPod stuff"!)
    Cheers
    ps IF ANYONE FROM APPLE MANAGES TO SEE THIS CAN YOU PLEASE OFFER THE OPPRTUNITY TO DOWNLOAD LATER VERSIONS OF APPS FOR 1ST GEN IPOD TOUCH

    Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
    App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
    Apple did not say why did not allow this option for iOS 3.1.3/1G iPod.

  • 1st Gen Imac G5 Question

    I own a 1st Gen Imac G5. I just recently purchased the Apple VGA Display Adapter hoping I would be able to use an external monitor as an extention of my desktop... after looking through the system preferences I realized there was no such option. I thought it might have had something to do with the OS version I was using so I upgraded to Leopord thinking it would solve my problem... it did not. Is there any sort of Patch or possible solution that could solve my problem?

    Welcome to Discussions, Nick - as far as I know, you can only mirror to another display.

  • Choosing a video card for 1st gen (1,1) mac pro

    Hey all,
    Buying a video card for my mac pro to upgrade from the stock 256mb nvidia, and have narrowed it to these three cards.
    ATI X1900 XT
    Nvidia 8800GT
    ATI 4870
    I know to make sure I buy the versions compatible with my generation mac pro etc, but they're all relatively close in price (within $100), so barring comparison in that area, which of these cards are the best? Or are they all pretty equal? I know very little about video cards.
    Also, as an aside, does the ATI 4890HD work with 1st gen mac pros? I've seen ebay auctions claiming they do, but I know better than to take them at face value.

    I wouldn't touch the X1900 overpriced and old.
    The 8800GT is hard to find but can be on ebay even for 1st gen
    ATI 4870 from Apple is safe bet.

  • 1st gen shuffle can't dock with itunes in windows 7

    My 1st gen iPod shuffle still works like a champ, USB docks fine and charges, but iTunes won't recognize it, so I can't change any of the music. I've tried the "reset iPod shuffle" directions here on this site, but it is in-effective. I've tried this on my home PC, notebook, and work PC. All are running Windows 7. The reset utility appears to be for earlier Windows versions only? I have seen some similar posts on this board but no resolution. What can I do?

    (On Windows) I recently encountered the same problem.  When opening iTunes, the Shuffle (1st gen) would continuously mount and dismount.  What ultimately worked for me is to run the Windows error-checking utility on Shuffle with the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" option selected.  I was then able to open iTunes and restore the iPod.  Note: It appears that if something goes wrong before you can restore, you will need to run the error-checking utility again before making another attempt.  Full instructions below:
    Connect iPod to computer
    Click the Start button and select "Computer"
    Right-click on your iPod
    Select "Properties"
    Navigate to the "Tools" tab,
    Under "Error-checking" click the "Check now..." button.
    A pop-up window will appear.  Click the check box for "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" (The check box for "Automatically fix file system errors" should already be selected).
    Click the "Start" button to run the utility.
    When finished, re-launch iTunes.  Select your iPod and then run the "Restore iPod" utility.
    If something goes wrong (iPod dismounts, can't run restore, etc.) repeat steps 2-9 to try again.
