That's not the IR receiver. That's the sleep light. It goes solid if in a reduced power state, and starts flashing like a "heartbeat" when it goes to a sleep state.

  • Infrared receiver not working

Can anyone suggest why the infrared facility on my MBP doesn't work? I have already made sure the disable remote control infrared receiver box in security prefs is unchecked and I have the message "This computer will work with any available remote". But it doesn't. The remote itself works on my other macbook and on MBPs at work so I don't think the problem is there. I put a new battery in the remote just to be sure and it still doesn't control the computer I want it to.
Is there any other fix I can try or is it an Apple repair job? Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

In my case the situation is:
    - System is up-to-date (10.4.9)
    - There's no option to disable infrared in the "Security" preferences pane.
    - Front Row doesn't even install (it doesn't pass the pre-requisites tests: os version and infrared receiver).
    - Remote's battery is fine since I can see it blinkin in the camera.
    - IR Receiver doesn't show up in System Profiler
    - Reseting PRAM didn't work
    - Apple hardware test (that comes with the installation discs) detects an infrared receiver but it doesn't have an mac address - don't know if it's supposed to - and says everything is alright.
    - kext AppleIRdont_remember_therest doesn't automaticly load on boot. Loaded it manualy and it loaded ok but without any improvements on my problem.
    Can anybody help?.....please?

  • How do i troubleshoot my infrared receiver on my macbook pro?

I have a working apple remote that I used on my previous macbook pro (early '08 model) that i'm trying to use on my new macbook (late 2011 model) and it doesnt seem to pair. I have ensured the remote is in working order by testing the battery, detecting the infrared signal from the remote under a digital camera, making sure the 'disable remote control' option in security & privacy panel and no luck. Can anyone shed some light on what could be the problem????

    Hi,
System Preferences > Accounts > Your Account
Select current  Pic and chose to Change it.
You get an option to take a SnapShot.
Quicktime will also be able to access it and record using Quicktime  X in Snow Leopard.

MSN for Mac can use it (It depend on version and in some cases whether you are connected to the correct type of Windows server)

  • CHECKED "Disable Remote Control Infrared Received" not working

    Hi,
I have an iMac and an Apple TV in the same room. I want the remote for the AppleTV to stop controlling the iMac.
Yes, I have already checked the box in System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General/Advanced.
Yes I have clicked OK and closed the lock to prevent further changes.
But the remote STILL CONTROLS the iMac. Its annoying.
On another discussion forum, a user mentioned a file called "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.driver.AppleIRController.plist" which my computer in fact does not have. Does anyone know, with Mountain Lion 10.8.4, should I still have this file?
Any other ideas what might be causing this?
The remote works and is paired with the AppleTV. But its still changing the iMac.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Many thanks,

Sorry to ask, but did you Unpair the Remote when you disabled the IR receiver...?

  • Infrared Receiver not working on mountain lion 10.8.2.

I found that just after i updated my OS to its new version the remote control stopped working. Is it a way to get it back again? (i checked on systems preferences but the option for this disappeared) I have a Macbook Pro and it worked before so the ir receiver must be on the hardware but disabled somehow from the software. I very much appriciate if someone please could help me solvinf this issue. Thank you so much in advance for the help guys!

Try deleting RBIOKitHelper.kext stored in system/library/extensions.  It's associated with Remote Buddy.  If it's old, it should be deleted.  In any event, it's not needed to enable Remote Buddy Express to work.
Candelair does work well though if that's what you prefer.

  • Infrared Receiver for 1st gen iMac G5 to work with Remote?

    Hello,
My girlfriend gave me a new Apple Remote control but I don't have an infrared reciever in my first generation iMac G5.
Can I get external ones, will they work, where can I get them at a reasonable price (I'm a poor student).
All the best and thanks for the help
    Joseph

    Thanks for the comments,
I'm not worried about it working with software etc (I have Front Row - best
not say how I got it). My experience of using Macs has taught me that
additional software for running peripheral devices isn't usually required.
I was hoping for information about buying an external IR reciever that could
work through a USB socket or something. I've checked and haven't been able
to find one and thought you guys might know where (online) I might be able
    to pick one up.
So there's an IR Reciever in the iPod Dock? If I got one of those could it to operate Front Row or just the iPod?

  • Detecting Infrared (IR) receiver with XP

I recently switched to MacBook and installed Windows XP due to compatibility issue. I use Polar Precision Performance, an exercise dairy and analysis software that only runs on Windows.
Transferring exercise data from a heart rate monitor to computer requires infrared receiver. However, Windows XP does not detect IR available on my Mac.
Does anyone know what could be a problem and how to solve it?
    Thank you.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.83GHz 1 GB RAM

The problem is that Windows probably requires a driver for IR port, which does not exist.

  • Device not working after updating from 8 to 8.1: SMK Ehome Infrared Transceiver and remote control (usb)

    Hi all,
An excellent 2015 to you all.
I wonder whether it's possible to get my (USB) SMK Ehome Infrared transceiver (which serves to connect my PC to a remote control)  to work again. It functioned okay under Windows 8, but when I upgraded my system to Windows 8.1 it didn't respond anymore.
How's that possible? And do you have any ideas how I can resolve this?
I use the remote control to start and stop videos and to adjust the sound volume.
    What I have done already:
-disabled and enabled the consumer IR devices under 'HID devices' in device management.
-disabled and enabled the USB controller for the Ehome Infrared Receiver.
No luck so far. Anybody knows what to do?
    Cheers,
    Peter

    Hi,
What is the driver status in device manager? Have you tried to manually download the right version driver for Windows 8.1 from the transceiver's manufacture website and install it in your system?
Meanwhile, please run services.msc to launch services manager, then scroll down to "Human Interface Device Access service", make sure the service is "started" to "manual" or "automatic", test the issue again.

    TechNet Community Support
Thanks, Yolanda Zhu. There is no driver on the manufacturer's website, but the driver is included from  Windows versions XP to 8 and the device responds as expected under these OS Versions. In Windows 8.1 it seems also to be included, and device manager
indicates under Human Interface Devices that the 'Microsoft eHome infra transceiver' driver  functions correctly and under
Universal Serial Bus controllers that 'eHome infrared receiver' (USBCIR) functions correctly as well.  But when I press the remote, the red LED blinks, but nothing else happens.
The "Human Interface Device Service" is set to automatic and is being executed.
Can it be that the mapping ('action on remote' to 'action on PC') is lost somehow?
    Cheers,

  • MBP IR Receiver Not Working

    Howdy,
    I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8
I am trying to use an Apple Remote with my iTunes. My computer is non responsive to my Apple Remote. I know the Apple Remote works because I have used it on another computer. In my system settings/security/general I have "Disable remote control infrared receiver" UNCHECKED and the computer is currently Unpaired to another remote. In my system profiler I can see my IR Receiver under USB. I cannot pair my remote to the computer and I have tried multiple button combinations.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there something wrong with my IR Receiver? Is there a way to test my IR Receiver?
Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.
    -Alan

I have tried everything, pairing, unpairing, the remote control works fine on the iMac but my Macbook just wont respond, Front Row works fine using +esc.
Maybe there is a command line using terminal to activate it, as I said before, the ir receiver is shown on system profiler-hardware-USB list.
    Thanks again.

  • Disable remote control IR receiver is not showing up in system pref.

My remote for my iMac is not working. I originally thought it neeeded a new battery but that was not it. I had a power outage the other night and since then have been noticing the problem.
    The apple support says;
    'To turn on IR reception:
Open System Preferences and click Security.
Deselect "Disable remote control infrared receiver.'
When I go to system preferences and then security, the option to 'disable remote control infrared receiver' does not show up.
Yesterday I restarted and the option came back, this morning after turning my computer on it wasn't there again. Any idea how to resolve this problem for good?
    Thank you
    Dan

The next time you notice the line gone from the System Preferences, open up your System Profiler (from the /Applications/Utillities/ folder) and check to see if the "IR Receiver" is listed under the USB section in Hardware.
If it doesn't appear there, then perhaps you're having some kind of failure of your receiver? If it does appear there, then it would seem more likely that you're having some kind of preference file or setting problem.

  • Satellite P850 - question about Infrared port

    Hi,
I have Windows 8 Pro installed onto my laptop and I've downloaded all the drivers and everything is working fine apart from the Infrared. I've searched all over the internet and I can't find a remote control to use with this laptop (including the Toshiba website).
I've installed the latest ENE CIR Driver (v4.1) as well as the Toshiba Remote Control Manager (v3.1.0.1). I looked in Program Files to open the Toshiba Remote Control Manager however when I click on the program to open it... Nothing happens (including in the notification area).
So my question is can I actually get a remote working with this laptop at all and if not then what is this Infrared port for because I can't find anything on my computer to actually use it with/for?!
    Thanks for your help :p

    Hi
Some Satellite P850 models are equipped with the remote controller and its possible to use the remote controller with Windows Media Center to play discs or videos, to view pictures and to watch recorded TV programs.
Models which dont include the a remote controller are *NOT* equipped with the an infrared receiver so the notebook cannot be operated with a remote controller.
The remote controller was not part of the package so your notebook does not support infrared receiver and therefore the installation of ENE CIR Driver and Toshiba Remote Control Manager was useless

  • Cannot turn off infrared remote

I wish to turn off infrared reception. The "Help" instructions are as follows:
Open the General pane of Security & Privacy preferences
Click the lock icon to unlock it, then type an administrator name and password.
    Click Advanced.
Select “Disable remote control infrared receiver” to turn off IR reception, or deselect it to turn on IR reception.
But when I follow the instructions and go to "Advanced" this is what appears:
There is no “Disable remote control infrared receiver” to select.
How then can I disable the IR?

Your Mac may not support IR ...
If it did, you would see:
Disable remote control infrared receiver ..
