Infrastructure Maintenance

Hi,
I have two questions:
1) I seem to remember from my 10gAS Admin class that I shouldn't perform any maintenance (regular analyzes, space maintenance, etc) on the infrastructure database. However, I can't find any documentation that confirms or denys this. I can find all sorts of information regarding middle tier performance monitoring/tuning, but nothing specifically regarding the infrastructure database. Is it going to 'break' things if I do run regular analyzes, install statspack and so on? If someone could give me a doc number or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
2) Also, the log files from the various components can become very large and have filled up my $ORACLE_HOME filesystem. Is there something that handles these (automatically removes/shrinks them) that I have missed? Or do I just need to come up with a home-grown script or two that will take care of this for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

The infrastructure consists of several repositories that have been pre-tuned by Oracle.
Specifically, I encourage you NOT to run statistics against the OiD repository unless the repository is at least Oracle database 10.2 or if you have a specific performance problem and Oracle Support tells you to rerun the stats.
AFAIK there is no log file shrinker. Suggest you look through the logs for errors, and shrink them manually. Also look through the configs to understand why the logs are growing. (THe default settings have always seemed too-much-logging for me.)

  • Single SharePoint 2013 Farm for two geographical locations

    Dear All,
I want your expert advise and suggestion on an "Architecture" for Deploying SharePoint 2013 in multiple geographical locations. I have read every line in article:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg441255%28v=office.15%29.aspx before posting
this question, for the following scenario:
    Scenario:
Two locations, say, Loc1 and Loc2.
SharePoint Farm = Collection of SharePoint servers connected to the same Configuration DB.
WFE1 will be in Loc1 and WFE2 will be in Loc2 (and connected to the same config DB i.e. same Farm).
App1 will be in Loc1 and App2 will be in Loc2 (and connected to the same config DB i.e. same Farm).
Users from Loc1 will be directed to WFE1 and Users from Loc2 will be directed to WFE2.
App1 will run services and service applications consumed by web applications specific to Loc1.
App2 will run services and service applications consumed by web applications specific to Loc2.
I can implement all of the above.
Now question is "How to provide local flavor for back end SQL?"
suppose, I configure "Active-Active" SQL clustering SQLNode1 at Loc1 and SQLNode2 at Loc2, how do I specify that web applications meant for Loc1 are fetched from SQLNode1 and web applications meant for Loc2 are fetched from SQLNode2.
Users in Loc1 are not interested in web applications meant for Loc2 and vice-versa. Currently we are having Two (2) different farms at each location, but going forward we want to consolidate so that "Infrastructure maintenance" is minimized and
investment in third party solutions can be leveraged by both locations.
Naveed.DG MCITP, MCTS -SharePoint 2010 Administrator "Vote As Helpful" If it helps!!

How far away are these SharePoint servers away from each other? Remember that regardless of where a SharePoint server is, it must be able to write to the active instance of the Configuration database, and must have that 1ms timing.
Active-Active SQL clusters has never been mentioned, as far as I'm aware, in TechNet documentation. I'd consider this scenario unsupported unless you talked to PSS otherwise.

  • Looking for Cisco service providers outside of USA

I am looking for Cisco service providers in Guyana.
It can be a third party vendor for Cisco partner for Cisco infrastructure maintenance.
    Thanks,

    Hello, xszhuMerak1.
I can help you find local Cisco support on your area. Would you be able to tell me for what Cisco infrastructure this support will be? Let me know if you have additional concerns or e-mail ([email protected]) me directly. Kind regards.

  • Windows Azure Team Structure

    Hi Azure,
I want to know, if we are running our business in Windows Azure Platform -
    1. Is it necessary to have infrastructure team (Like SQL DBA, Windows Admin, Storage Team, Monitoring team..etc) in our       premises to support the application?
    Or
    2. Has Application developer to do all the activities like deploying app, storage creation and maintain, AD creation and           maintenance, Traffic manager implementation,...etc?
Kindly answer this question for both IAAS / PAAS applications.
Let me know if anything is unclear

    Hi Saravanabharathi,
Its a very good question and I see no reason not to have the infrastructure team, If you are planning to use SQL Azure I am sure you will need a DBA to do everything that you do on premises minus upgrades to the software.
regardless of IAAS or PAAS Azure does not eliminate the need of infrastructure team at all, now being said that you can also have very talented engineering staff who can take parts of responsibility from #1 & #2 from your question above.
in short yes you need infrastructure team regardless of IAAS / PAAS, how big is the team you need depends on what your need is and can not be a generic answer. Azure does not eliminate need of any of your staff but it reduces their workload so they can focus
more on core of the work and less on infrastructure maintenance.
    hope this helps

  • Solution manager maintenance optimizer

    Hi all,
I have what I think is an issue, and hoping someone could possibly point me in the direction to correct. I have setup our solution manager system and trying to get the maintenance optimizer option working fully. I have a java system that I pull the information from SLD perfectly fine, and it lists all installed software components via SMSY>SYSTEMS perfectly. I have assigned logical components etc. I can create a new maintenance optimizer transaction, select the proper system with assigned components, but when it lists the files to be downloaded automatically I expect to see alot more files available for download than it lists for me. I assume I am missing something, but not sure where to look.
Would anyone be able to possibly point me in the right direction on what I might be missing?
    Regards,
    Chris

    Hi Markus,
The system is SAP EHP1 for SAP Netweaver 7.0. It has the following components installed and specified in logical components:
    Adobe Document services
    Application server Java
    EP Core
    Enterprise Portal
Along with the kernel files I also get the following files available for download via maintenance optimizer (6 in total)

That's right. The primary host won't host any other service, unless you execute 'vda-config' a second, which is actually not recommended.
So, no web UI and no 'vdadb:sql' will be activated; if those services are activated by hand, it may cause unexpected results.
    ok, then svcadm clear/enable vdadb:sql is a no-no ... got it.
then the cacaoadm status output is correct/fine:
default instance is DISABLED at system startup.
    default instance is not running.

I assume "it" is part of the vdi deployment...
now, as stated in the cloning problem post, I am still getting the cryptic:
Error cloning: No suitable hosts to start a desktop for Desktop Provider venezuela.
you might want (I invite you) to take a look at the post,
the only difference between then and now is that I finally brought up the openldap
server inside a zone on one of the servers, and added it as the user directory as I
couldnt get to make it work with the win2003 active directory (can be treated in a
    separate post if needed)...

  • CRES maintenance coming October 10th, 2009 - New times!

    Update - 2009-09-29
Based on your feedback, we are delaying the maintenance start time to 15:00 PST (22:00 UTC). The duration remains 6 hours and the day is still October 10th, 2009.
The Cisco Registered Envelope Service (CRES) will be temporarily unavailable while we upgrade our infrastructure. We thank you for your patience. This release contains many new features and functionality as well as improvements to the stability and performance of our hosted infrastructure. To learn more view the complete release announcement https://www.ironportnation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1482
    New IP ranges:
As part of this upgrade, we will be moving our outbound email servers to a new set of IP addresses. Customers who have TLS require set up by IP range or firewall rules specific to res.cisco.com will need to modify their infrastructure to accommodate the new IP ranges.
    208.90.57/26
    204.15.81/26
    216.206.186.129/25 *
    * This is the original CRES ip range. During this migration we recommend you support all three sets of IP ranges
These ranges can also be queried using our published SPF record.
    $ dig +short res.cisco.com txt
    "v=spf1 ip4:204.15.81.0/26 ip4:216.206.186.129/25 ip4:208.90.57.0/26
    mx:res.cisco.com ~all"
As a best practice we recommend using the hostname rather than IPrange to
configure TLS. For more information see Knowledge Base article 1442 http://preview.tinyurl.com/l2nbv7.
    Maintenance Duration:

Saturday, October 10th from 15:00 - 21:00 PST
    (Sat 22:00:00 - Sun 04:00:00 UTC)
    Impact:
During the maintenance window it will not be possible to open PXE encrypted messages. CRES admins will not be able to log into the administration interface and senders of PXE encrypted messages may receive bounce messages. All services will be restored once the upgrade is concluded. Any bounced messages can be resent at that time.
Note: This is in addition to our regularly scheduled maintenance window from 10 AM to 11 AM Pacific Time on the last Saturday of every month. Complete Terms of Service are available on the CRES web site https://res.cisco.com.

    Good point.
The old email servers will stop sending mail after the cutover on October 10th.
The new email servers are available now and the team is running TLS connection tests from them. As we get closer to the rollout, we will both send reminders out to everyone and reach out directly to the customers to whom our TLS connection tests fail.

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.2- problems: Wired Detailed Device Inventory report not running / Cisco 5500 WLCs no listed in subgroup

New installation of Prime Infrastructure 2.2.0 (PI-VA-2.2.0.0.158.ova)
    installed fixes/software/device packs:
    PI 2.2.1 Poodle Fix (installed)
    PI 2.2.1 Maintenance Release (installed,ncs stopped,rebooted)
    Prime Infrastrucutre 2.2 Device Pack 3 (installed,ncs stopped,rebooted)
    Licences installed (ncs stopped,rebooted)
Added all devices via Bulk Import (Inventory>Device Management>Network Devices)
    Problem 1:
The Cisco 5500 WLCs are not listed in Inventory>Device Management>Network Devices (see screen shot) but listed under "All Devices"!
The Cisco 4400 WLCs and the 8500 WLCs are listed within their subgroup.
    Devices are in "Managed State"
    Problem 2: fixed! (Browser issue)
    Problem 3:
Unable to run "Wired Detailed Device Inventory" report because I get the error message: Failed to run report: Unable to retrieve data for: Chassis Information (if Chassis Information is selected, if System Information is selected I get the error message with ...retrieve data for:System Information)
All devices do have an "Admin Status = Managed" and the Last Inventory Collections Status = Completed.
Has anyone the same issues or a tip for me?
Another topic, the "User Defined Fileds" are not exported when with running a "Device Export" (Inventory > Device Management > Network Devices). ;-(

    Hallo Bastian,
I think you still have browser issue, Using IE is still the best with Prime.
I have exactly same prime 2.2 and installed fixes/software/device packs.
I have no problem I can see all views. I use now IE 11, with Chrome 42.0.2311.90 and firefox 37.01 I have problems too with lots of views. You have not tell what browser + version you have.
Since you have same prime 2.2 as me. I have other problems, can you check yours?

NetFlow export is also supported on other Cisco switches when using a NetFlow Feature Card (NFFC) or NFFC II and the Route Switch Module (RSM), or Route Switch Feature Card (RSFC). However, check whether version 5 is supported, as most switches export version 7 by default.
You can check the below steps to diagnose the issue::
To verify that NetFlow is exported from a device to PI, follow the steps below:
    1)    Browse to Administration > Data Sources page. Check the value in column ‘Last Active Time’  for the ‘Device Data Sources’ table. If the table is empty or  the value does not represent recent time, then
it is possible that the device is not exporting NetFlow or PI Assurance license is not applied / expired.
    2)    Login to PI console ( via SSH) as root user and run the command:
                    netstat –an | grep 9991 – Output of this should be like :  udp        0      0 :::9991         :::*
Check the firewall settings on PI server using the command: firewall -L
    1)    Check the configuration on an IOS / IOS –XE device. Run the commands
    a)    sh running-config | inc destination
    1)    This should list the IP address of the PI SERVER ( along with other outputs if any)
    b)    sh running-config | inc 9991
    1)    This should list at least one entry.
    c)    If the above are fine, then verify that the flow monitor, flow exporter and the flow records are correctly configured on the device.
Refer to the URLs below to configure NetFlow export.

  • HELP: WLC AP-SSO not working (standby unity in maintenance mode)

I have two WLC version 7.3.101.0 with the standby unit having HA-SKU. I have tested the AP-SSO functionality without any problem in lab with direct connection on RP port between two WLC. Once I brought them into data centre in separate location (latency is less than 10ms between the two DC), the standby unity always went into maintenance mode. The booting process on standby unit went to maintenance mode as shown below:
Management Gateway and Peer Redundancy Management interface are not reachable.
    Entering maintenance mode...
I have checked on the core switches at 2 data centre that the two WLC RP ports are connected to same VLAN and it is spanned across MAN link (10GB and less than 10ms delay). The spanning tree on those ports are forwarding as well.
I have rebooted the second unit but no luck.
The interface between two DC is using MTU 9216 which I do not think would cause this issue.
Anyone has come across same or similar issue with me or know the solution? If you do, plz enlighten me.
    Thanks

Thanks Leo and Scott for your feedback. I notice there are two newer software for WLC version 7.3.102.0 and 7.4.100.0.
Both of them seem to have many open caveats. In my wireless environment, I also use ISE, MSE and Prime Infrastructure and unfortunately WLC 7.4 does not support prime solution and MSE yet according to below compatibility matrix.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/5500/tech_notes/Wireless_Software_Compatibility_Matrix.html
I think I only have choice to do minor upgrade to 7.3.102.0 at this moment (please correct me if I am wrong). This software was published on 30th Jan 2013 so I wonder if someone else has tried this and managed to get WLC AP-SSO setup working flawlessly where 2nd WLC unit is at different location?
Appreciate for more info and advise.

  • How to measure Availability Complexity Operation & Maintenance Costs etc

    Dear All
We have multiple configurations for attaining High Availability, Maximum Availability with and / or across data centers for databases. Some employ Active - Active Clustering Solution while Some use Active - Passive Solution. Some employ only OS clusters like Sun Clusters,Veritas clusters. Often as I noticed, a combination of OS cluster say Veritas Cluster as well as Oracle Cluster (Clusterware + RAC) in their database solutions.
In such situations how does one come up with Quantitative analysis of each methodology? What are the inputs one would need and how does these calculations come up? While searching on internet, I have seen at times ACTIVE - ACTIVE Database clusters using VCFS and Oracle Clusters RAC say the availability is some 99.xx% while other approaches are accordingly rated. How does one come up to such quantitative decisions? Could you please advice.
I was asked to come up with such numbers in terms of below mentioned items for a few approaches I suggested.
    Availability of the Database
    Complexity of Architecture and understanding.
    Set up costs.
    Operational Costs.
    Cost of Maintenance
For your understanding I've suggested below approaches to attain High availability with Production Data Centre.
Approach - I : I will have Active - Passive Database running on node a and b respectively. DB1 will be active on node a and DB2 will be active on node b. In the event of failure they will fail over to the alternative.
Approach - I : I will have Active - Passive Database running on node a and b respectively. DB1 and DB2 will be active on node a and node b will always running waiting for a failover event. In the event of failure they will fail over to node b.
Approach - III : I will have DB1 and DB2 active on Node a. We could configure Dataguard (Logical or a physical standby) on node b in the production data centre.
Approach IV : I will have a two node cluster running RAC and will have ACTIVE- ACTIVE database DB1 and DB2 running on them.
Personally I like the Approach IV. However, for business reasons, we need to make a decision based on quantitative analysis done.
If one of you have already done one such excercise, could you please share yoru experiences here?
Many Many thanks for all your guidence in this direction.
    Regards!

Non Availability of the Database: Time taken to detect failure+ OS failover + starting of the database
Complexity of Architecture and understanding: From oracle side there is no complexity as hardware cluster takes care about this
Set up costs: If management has already decided to have one server for each database, then no extra cost except the cost of license of the hardware cluster. Else cost of extra server.
Operational Costs: (None) (Excluding the dba/sa task to verify the failover)
Cost of Maintenance: (None) (Excluding the dba/sa task to verify the failover)

Non Availability of the Database: Time taken to detect failure+failover+starting of the database*2 (Since both the database needed to be failover)
Complexity of Architecture and understanding: From oracle side there is no complexity as hardware cluster takes care about this
Set up costs: If management has already decided to have one server for each database, then no extra cost except the cost of license of the hardware cluster. But you would be underutilizing your one server and over utilizing your another server
Operational Costs: (None) (Excluding the dba/sa task to verify the failover)
Cost of Maintenance: (None) (Excluding the dba/sa task to verify the failover)
Approach - III : I will have DB1 and DB2 active on Node a. We could configure Dataguard (Logical or a physical standby) on node b in the production data centre.
Non Availability of the Database: Since there would be a manual intervantion here. Down time would be (Time taken to detect failure+ time taken to activate standby database)*2 (Since both the database needed to be failover)
Complexity of Architecture and understanding: Complex since data gaurd need to be setup.
Set up costs: License for extra two database and for data gaurd.
    Operational Costs: (None)
Cost of Maintenance: Verification that log files are continuously shipped and that there is no lag.
Also note if the database is not in maximum protection mode, chances are that you would loose data. If they are in maximum protection mode, then there would be a performance impact to your production server.
Approach IV : I will have a two node cluster running RAC and will have ACTIVE- ACTIVE database DB1 and DB2 running on them.
Non Availability of the Database: None till the time both cluster goes down.
Complexity of Architecture and understanding: Complex since you would be using RAC
Set up costs: Am not sure about licenscing part of RAC
    Operational Costs: None
Cost of Maintenance: Nearly double then using single node Database.
Personally I like the Approach IV. However, for business reasons, we need to make a decision based on quantitative analysis done.
If one of you have already done one such excercise, could you please share yoru experiences here?
Many Many thanks for all your guidence in this direction.

SaratI have not come up with the exact number since it would depends on the infrastructure and hardware.
Moreover Non availibility of database was only due to the fact hardware is not available it does not include the non availibility of database due to the issue with database. If there is issue with database, then even the passive node would not be able to handle it except only inthe case of data guard.

  • Maintenance Optimizer = Unnecessary Overhead

Who in the world came up with an idea to make it mandatory to use Maintenance Optimizer for SAP patches? There's no real value in this tool except additional bureaucracy. We still have to download support packages & import them manually. So where's the benefit?
First, we are now forced to spend a week to patch Solution Manager to the required level (although we could safely ignore it until now - we don't use Solution Manager). And then the support package with the Maintenance Optimizer included appears to be buggy and counterintuitive to configure (including the latest one - Level 11)
Maintenance Optimizer is making our life more difficult, not easier. It was clear and simple to download the support packages one-by-one - only what we need. So why to take out a working, trusted and efficient mechanism?
Just expressing my serious disappointment. Make the Maintenance Optimizer optional, not mandatory - hope someone from SAP will read it.

    Hi Marek (and all others),
I've said and communicated that in the past also - here, in the OSS, to the sales reps (they even didn't know it's mandatory as of 2nd of April), to the "complaint management", on official SAP events, in the DSAG et al - no luck whatsoever, everybody is totally convinced, that THIS tool, which is even more complex than everything we have in our company, is THE solution for EVERY problem. The main problem is in my eyes, that the SolMan is the biggest problem itself. The IDEA is not generally bad, but the implementation is unfinished, overly complex, non-intuitive and lacks a consistent setup and "view". In my eyes it's just a conglomerate of transactions put together in "some form" without a real thread.
Criticism and customer input IS being heard here and things became "easier" already but the fact, that customers are URGED to implement SolMan, no matter if they have already another ticket system, monitoring infrastructure, implementation tools, project management etc. is the wrong way, it's pure pretentiousness. And even if you don't use anything of those nice features, it's WAY too bloated to just download SPs.
And you still don't need SolMan to download - you can still select them one-by-one without everything, you just have to download from the download basket instead of direct clicking on a link in the browser, that's the only change so far and I'm VERY happy with that.
Don't expect some official person from SAP stating on this here, that decision was made at management level @ SAP and I'm sure that SAP internally there are many people thinking the same way but via customers the strategy must be consistently communicated and thus nobody from SAP here will say anything against it, even if they think likewise.
I still have hopes, that, after Agassi is gone and Plattner is back (well, at least a bit), winds will change again back to business, back to quality and back to less intrusive and less presumptuous customer interaction.

  • Maintenance transaction error

    Hello experts!
I'm trying to create a maintenance transaction in my solution manager for my enterprise portal system (based on netweaver 7.3)
*The system was registered automatically in SLD  at installation
*In SMSY I have this structure
    Product Systems
    --->SAP Netweaver AS JAVA
    >EPP
    >Application Server JAVA
In EPP component I have in Product Instante Selection
Application Server Java marked as relevant and technical system too
The techincal system is called EPP and the system type is JAVA
But when I choose calculate files automatically in MOPZ I get this message
"No Component Version data for system EPP ! "
Where should I configure that version data?
    Thank you

    Hi,
When you go to SMSY, system EPP, and click on one of the Java product
instances in the navigation pane at the left, you see the data for the
    Java technical system EPP.
Please check if there is any tab software component information for this
Java technical system , and if there is such a tab, if the software
    components have any values.
I strongly recommend this documentation below.

  • Consultations on Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2

I recently installed Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2 and I have 2 questions regarding configuration:
    1. What configurations should run for vulnerability when some event occurs on a switch an alarm is lifted in the Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2?
    2. Is there any way to put a device into maintenance mode in the web interface of Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2, so that can not be spoiled reports regarding equipment availability during the execution of maintenance?

    1. If you configure PI as an SNMP and syslog server for your devices and have enabled logging traps etc., PI's alarm browser will show the alarms. If you want them to be sent to you via email, you can do that under the Admin menu for setting up your Mail server and clicking the link to "Configure email notification for individual alarm categories." (see below - open in new tab to zoom). It's not completely customizable but what you see there is the current product capabilities in that regard.
    2. No, this is not currently an available feature in PI 2.2.

  • Critical Alarms from LAPs in Maintenance State

Should a critical alarm be triggered when an LAP disassociates from a WLC if it is placed in Maintenance State before it's taken offline?
Should I delete, clear or acknowledge the critical alarm if a LAP was taken offline before it was placed in Maintenance state?
Should I still put LAPs in maintenance state if they were taken offline before I had a chance to?
Using Cisco Prime Infrastructure version 1.2

I just upgraded CPI to version 2.2 and the controllers to 7.6.130 and I'm still getting the same result.
I'm getting critical alarms for APs in Maintenance State.
