Ingesting less than FXP quality AVCHD in FCE (using Canon HF-10)

Hi,
I've been ingesting AVCHD clips from my Canon HF-10 and have had no problems. I thought I'd read somewhere that you must have shot the footage in the highest quality (17 Mb/s) in order for it to be ingested properly. However, I just tried SD footage, and it seemed to ingest fine. Is this because I recently upgraded to FCE 4.0.1 ?
Thanks,
Vic

Sorry to poke my nose into this thread, but to clarify, the pixels on the screen of your notebook are etched in, and cannot be stretched or multiplied. Each physical pixel is driven by a transistor pair in and matrix configuration, and only whole pixel can be displayed. The 1440 vs. 1920 are virtual pixels in some frame buffer, and need to be re-sampled and filtered by H/W-S/W, before they are actually displayed on the square pixels your MacBook's screen. Just the data as it is being stored and transmitted from the camcorder to the PC represent 1440 or 1920 pixels per scan line. Actually there are macroblocks (4x4, through 16x16 and color sub-sampling involved - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC ), so it is more complex that what I just said. For all practical purposes, there is theoretically less detail transmitted per scan line in the case of 1440 pixels/line, but it maybe impossible to see on a notebook (which cannot display all that detail anyway) and would depend on the actual image captured. Unless you are viewing this on a large display, and are viewing a video that contains and is actually captured very high detail, great optics, etc., you will not see the difference. You just have to match the resolutions between the camcorder and the computer, so it receives the amount of data it expects or it will get confused and quit with an error. To see the difference between the 1440 and 1920 requires the right pattern, equipment chain and trained eye, to really appreciate it.

  • Best target format to use for importing less-than-cinema-quality video?

I shot 4.5 hours of conference video on an AVCHD consumer camera. The original footage uses about 14.5 GB on the camera's SD card. The video was shot at 1440 x 1080, 16 x 9.
When I do a log and transfer, the files balloon to 250 GB and are saved as Apple ProRes 422 by default.
Since this is just conference footage, it doesn't to have the highest quality. I have no need for Apple ProRes 422.
If possible, here's what I'd like to do:
    1) import it using a format that gives me at least the same quality as the original video
    2) keep the file size as close as possible to the original file size
    3) Keeps the original 1440 x 1080 size.
    4) Is a format that can still be edited in the Final Cut 7 timeline.
    5) Saves me the hassle of having to run Compressor on the huge 250GB files.

    Thanks.
I tried LT setting. It created files about 30% smaller than those created with the normal ProRes setting. So instead of 250 GB, I have 160 GB files. Better, but I was hoping more like 20 GB files.
I'm going to try giving iMovie a shot and see what kind of file it generates.
What I'm mostly interested in doing is providing an archival copy of the full video for historical purposes. Something that could fit on a couple of DVDs or placed on a hard drive or cloud storage system without eating up huge amounts of space. Also, something a historian could reasonably be expected to open 20 years from and have it still look reasonably good on his/her 6000 x 4000 monitor.

  • Any Quality loss in FCE using H.264

I have shot video using the new Canon SX30is with 720p. The files are H.264 (1280x720). I have put them directly into FCE and then rendered them. This took some time, but worked fine. My question is did I loose any quality be doing this? I saved it as a QT. I want to get Roxio 10 Toast Titanium w/HD plugin. Basically I'm asking if the edited video is in 720? In FCE I set the sequence to 720.
    Thanks,
    Rod

Thanks for the quick response. I have streamclip and have tried it, but not sure about the settings. The streamclip default export settings to QT are as follows - Compression: Apple Motion JPEG A, 1260x720 (unscaled), I can set quality to 100%, Interlaced Setting checked, and Field Dominance: Upper Field First.
Not sure where 'converting AIC' is located or if it part of exporting to QT.
Since I have completed editing, I will leave it, but would like to know how to use streamclip in the future.
    Thanks for your help skalicki.

  • Can't import more than a few seconds of video (using Canon Elura 70)

I'm trying to import video from my Canon MVX250i (also called Elura 70 in some countries) using iMovie HD 5.0.2.
The camera is detected fine and can be controlled using the iMovie control buttons.
Importing works okay for a few seconds, but then the video stops being imported and the iMovie display changes to a blue screen with the words "Camera Playing". The camera itself is unaffected and continues to play.
The same setup (camera, MiniDV tape, computer, firewire cable) works fine with iMovie 4.0.1. Also, HDD space isn't an issue.
Is there a known incompatibility between my camera and iMovie HD?
What do I need to do to get this working?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   iMovie HD 5.0.2

    Hi Bengt,
    Thanks for your reply.
Just a question. Did You record in LP-mode on Your
    Camera ?
No, my video is recorded using SP-mode.
If You torn off - import as individual clips - in
    iMovie pref. Does
    it work better ?
I can't find an option in iMovie HD of this name. The closest one to this is called "Start a new clip at each scene break". Turning this off does not help.
Is FileVault on (in Your Mac) ? turn it off !
FileVault has always been turned off.
I have read elsewhere in this forum that having external firewire drives plugged in can interfere with the importing of video.
I am using an external firewire drive. It is connected to the Firewire 800 port, while the camera is using the FW400 port. They are not daisy-chained.
This setup works with iMovie 4, so I don't see why it shouldn't work for iMovie HD 5 as well.

Hmmm... that's a tricky one.  I'm going to suggest you ask in the Creative Cloud forum, because they are better at installation issues

You _might_ find the answer here though

Or just get the Photography deal subscription for $10/month.  I promise you will never regret it, and a year from now, you might even be a famous image manipulator!  On the other hand, if you don't have Photoshop, you will never be a famous image manipulator.  You know it makes sense. :-)

    Ryclark is, alas, spot on.
In the bad old days I used to use CD to playback sound effects in the theatre and many of these were less than 4 seconds duration.  I used to have to edit in a few seconds silence at the end of all the short effects to keep the CD format happy.

  • Video quality is less than expected when playing inside Flash

iam using flv video. i played it back in many ways , with flv player that comes with flash ,as embedded in the time line and using external class that use  NetStream ,the video quality was less than playing the same video  outside the flash invironment using any  stand  alone video player like media player classic .
why is that happening , did i miss some thing ?
is there a setting  that i should do to play hd video in high quality ?
i have tried setting stage.quality to BEST but it didn't affect the video quality ?
    any help  ?

can't I just change the "Easy Setup" settings so it would work without degrading the input and subsequently the output? Sorry, I don't quite grasp "fixed-resolution" yet so may be asking something that doesn't have an answer.
FCE only works with certain presets available in the Easy Setup menu. If your footage isn't one of these resolutions then FCE will conform it to the sequence you have selected, downgrading the footage in the process. Final Cut Pro gives you the option to make a sequence set to the dimensions you want it to be, without worrying about whether your image matches a preset.

  • Suggest Camcorder less than $500, prefer not tape

    Pardon the awkwardly worded headline.
Do I still need a tape camera to edit with FCP Express?
Would prefer not. Regardless, suggestions of a good camcorder for less than $500 greatly appreciated. Shooting mostly family stuff. Don't know if I can accomodate the extra disk space required by HD.
    Thanks for any guidance.

"Do I still need a tape camera to edit with FCP Express?"
    No.
" suggestions of a good camcorder for less than $500"
Any standard AVCHD Video Camera will do the job using FCE > Log & Transfer.
Cameras are personal and features are important such as headphone socket, external mic input and an OIS (optical image stabilizer).
You need to test drive cameras in your buget zone to try how they fit into your hand and where buttons are located etc.
3 sensor chips are important to boost the image quality as is the quality of the lens, usually found in the higher end camcorders.
Second hand solid state cameras may put a high end cam into the budget. They have hardly any moving parts as compared the old tape cameras and thus second hand solid state cams are a safer purchase second hand than tape cams.
As far as HD space you should get yourself an external fast drive eg. firewire, thunderbolt or USB 3 for media storage. As big as you can afford.
    Nowdays that's about a 1Terabyte or so.
HD video when absorbed to FCE will use around 40 gig per hour and the render files during editing will keep the gigs climbing.

  • Comparing video quality of AVCHD BluRay discs using Final Cut Pro Share vs Compressor

Up front, I will admit to being a newbie when it comes to using Final Cut Studio 3 and would appreciate some feedback from the Apple forum experts.
I have spent a lot of time trying to determine how to achieve an optimum group of Compressor 3.5.2 settings so that the playback video quality of an AVCHD BluRay disc is equal to or better than one created by using the simpler auto settings of FCPro Share, version 7.0.2.
When using Compressor’s auto/default maximum settings, I experienced the same error message reported in:
Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12073794#12073794
I have since made some Compressor AVCHD Discs with smaller bit rate settings and compared video quality with a single FCP Share AVCHD disc.  Both seem to be equal in providing a very good video when viewed on my new Panasonic DMP BDT 310 BluRay player. However, the Compressor AVCHD discs show some motion artifacts not present with the FCPro Share version, especially when scrolling text or when objects are moving through the field of view, and visible artifacts are seen from a stationary chain link fence and other lattice work in the background of the video sample.
My sample video used for the comparisons between Compressor and FCP Share discs is a 21 minute duration home movie, originally captured from a mini DV, Canon HV30 1080i camcorder using ProRes HQ encoding(1440x1080), and dragged into FC Pro 7.0.2 timeline where 10 chapter markers have been inserted.
To create an AVCHD disc using FCPro Share, Markers are used to set the IN and OUT points, Select IN to OUT from the timeline, pull down File Menu Share, Select Create BluRay from options in pop out Share pane, and designate output device along with picture files for Background, Logo, and Title options. When these are completed, click on Export.  My 21-minute video required almost two hours for encoding including about 10 minutes for burning. This accomplished on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
To prepare this same 21-minute video for use with Compressor, I again Select IN to Out from the FCPro timeline, but this time use File Export as a QuickTime Self Contained movie including Chapter markers. Then Open Compressor, choose Create BluRay from Template pane, right click on the down arrow in the Batch window and load the QT self contained movie file. From there I went to the Inspector window and tried various combinations of bit rate settings along with Frame Encoder options such as Better or Best motion parameter controls.
I have tried the following combinations of Bit rate settings along with varying Frame Encoder controls and burned an AVCHD disc for each example:
    Example A
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings OFF. Approximately 4 hours to encode although the time remaining estimator indicated a larger value of ~7 hours; not an accurate estimator at all.
    Example B
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motionadaptive)” settings. Approximately 4 hours to encode, not the 13 hours that were estimated.
Conclusion: Comparing A & B Compressor versions, Disc B showed some improvements in reducing motion artifacts over Disc A.
    Example C
Compressor set to 13 Mbps Average and 15 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. DeInterlace was checked. Unknown hours to encode; about 8 hours done overnight..
Conclusion: Disc C showed some minor improvements reducing motion artifacts over Disc B
    Example D
Compressor Auto settings,i.e., 15 Mbps Average and 17 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. Approximately 12 hours to encode, done overnight. Inserted disc next morning after the overnight encoding was completed, and a few minutes later an error message pane appeared that the maximum bit rate had been exceeded.  This message was consistent with the Apple posted thread referenced above. Unfortunately the long overnight encoding was wasted.
It seemed to me that the best Compressor settings for suppressing the motion artifacts were displayed by the disc burned in Example C, i.e.,  13/15 Ave/Max Mbps with“Better” Motion settings in the Frame Encoder.
However, when this disc was compared to the AVCHD Disc burned using the FCPro Share, the latter still seemed much better. I do not know what the auto bit rate values are as set in FC Pro, but for me, the quality is quite good AND the motion artifacts are significantly reduced, especially evident with the scrolling text.
Sorry about this long post, but I thought the detail would be necessary for the experts, and maybe helpful to others trying to get started in this BluRay arena.  Did I misuse Compressor?  I think the sample video exported as a self contained QT movie was the right thing to do?  Not sure where I went wrong.
Thanks in advance for Feedback and Recommendations.  For now, I’m going to stay with the simpler process using Final Cut Pro Share function.
    BoBo

Thank You, Brad, for responding;  glad to hear I'm not the only one having similar Compressor issues.
You may have hit on something.  Perhaps Compressor's use of H.264 encoding was the reason for my motion artifacts?  And perhaps Final Cut Pro Share retains the 1440x1080 quality as it burns the AVCHD BluRay disc?
I had Toast 10 for less than 30 days a couple of years ago, and was lucky to get a refund.
What version of Toast do you have?  Wondering if new Toast 11 has improved previous bugs, especially upgrading its Chapter text, pictures, music.  I would go back to Toast if it came close to mirroring DVD Studio Pro, or even iDVD capabilities.
    Thanks,
    BoBo

  • Image Quality Issues from FCE to iDVD

I've been attempting to take a 16 minute video shot in DV to a DVD and have been disappointed with the results. Using Final Cut Express, I've tried every codec but have found the image quality to be quite a bit less than the original DV footage. Also having a difficult time retaining the original 4:3 aspect ratio of the footage, despite specifying NTSC 4:3. When converting the footage to a Quicktime movie, the quality of the movie appears fine when played back on the Mac, but degraded when the final DVD is burned. Haven't used iDVD much, so the issue may lie there, but it's hard for me to believe that such a relatively small amount of footage would require so much compression that the final DVD image would show this much degradation from the DV footage.
Is there some magic combination of codec and size that I'm missing when converting to Quicktime?

Your FCE Easy Set should be DV NTSC.
Your FCE Sequence Settings should also be DV NTSC.
Export a QuickTime Movie using Current Settings, Self Contained.
Bring that file into iDVD where it will be converted internally to MPEG 2.

  • Design Question: Can I use Rest-CsPoolRegisterState command in order start Front End Service when Quorum is lost and less than 85% of FES are available?

    Hi,
Assuming below setup for Enterprise edition Lync 2013
Single Pool Stretched architecture with 4 FES servers
    Site A Data Center
    Site B Data Center
    FES
    2
    2
    SQL
    1 Primary
    1 Mirror
Fact: In a situation when we lose network connectivity to Site A DC, and due to less than 50% FES servers, Quorum will be lost and as a result Front End Service will stop after 5 minutes.
The question is, would I be able to do a manual intervention by using this command
Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState –PoolFqdn <pool name fqdn> –ResetType QuorumLossRecovery , and start FES with just 2 FES servers in Site B DC and 1 SQL
    Server?
The reason I am asking this question is because it is mentioned in one of the Lync manuals that at least 85% of the servers must be available to recover once the Quorum has lost. The same manual also mentions to use above
mentioned command in order to recover from Quorum Loss despite the fact that the lost FES servers are still not available.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
In Lync server 2013 Stretched pools are not supported for the Front End, Edge, Mediation, and Director server roles. It need two Lync pools.
If one pool fail to connect, An administrator can declare an emergency and fail over the pool to the backup pool.  That is done by using the:
    Invoke-CsPoolFailover –PoolFQDN <Pool fqdn> –DisasterMode –Verbose

  • Is two-pass VBR not needed if less than 60 minutes?

Just curious... I've read that single-pass will result in the same quality as two-pass for projects less than 60 minutes.

Single pass may result in superior quality. Two pass VBR is necessary to squeeze file sizes and bit rates to fit within DVD parameters.

  • How do you reduce image to less than 5 mb

I need to reduce a simple image to less than 5 mb without losing too much quality.  How is this possible in Photoshop Touch?  I don't understand how to convert the size from pixels to mb etc
    Please help a beginner

Well, a 4000 x 3000 (about 12 Megapixels) image saved as JPEG 100% quality will average about 2.5 MB in file size. (Note how I said average depending on image.) I can't remember offhand how much PS Touch compresses an image when saved as JPEG. Maybe someone from Adobe staff can comment. There's no way of adjusting how a project gets saved other than the file type when exporting.
PS Touch can handle about 12 Megapixels max (though I've had it go as high as 4000 x 4000 in a new project).

  • Internet slows down at night to less than 1Mbs, poor customer service

I'm having the same problem. I had originally 1-3 Mbps (Oct 2008 - Jan 2012). It used to work fine but then the speed seems to be slowing down as years passed by, I was getting less than 1Mbps most of the time so I upgraded to 3-7Mbps with 2 years holding period (Jan 2012 to Jan 2014). From Jan 2012 to Nov. 2012 it was fine, then starting Dec. 2012, the internet started to slow down at night. I'm getting 6-7Mbps during daytime and until around 9pm, then the internet slows down to less than 1Mbps after 9pm. Then starting mid January 2013, the situation seems to get worst, the internet slows down starting around 7pm, and then on the 3rd wk of January, the internet started to slow down as early as 5pm.
I've contacted the customer service twice. First, the person who attended remotely accessed my computer and after more than 15 minutes trying to find fault at my computer, wiring, set-up or wireless router (instead of the verizon network), he realized he doesn't have any excuses and instead instructed me to hard reset the modem. I told him that if I hard reset the modem, he will be disconnected to my computer. He said, "that's fine, I will call you you to give instruction on how to set-up the modem". After I have hard reset the modem, he never called up and I was left all by myself figuring out how to set-up the modem. I've contacted the customer service the 2nd time, a different person attended and exactly the same thing happened, the guy instructed me to hard reset the modem but never called up after he got disconnected. I guess this is their expertise, how to rudely leave the communication once they figure out that they can't resolve the problem.
Once the 2 years holding period is over, I will change to other internet provider and will never switch back to verizon again. I will never ever recommend verizon to my friends and will share them my experience with verizon.

This is one of the reasons we are leaving Verizon as well.  We previously left Brighthouse because the initial deal sounded great, until the rebates expired.  When the price jacked up, I told them they had to better because Brighthouse was much less expensive for the same package but their service didn't slow down at 7pm.  The customer service agent said I really couldn't compare the two because Verizon has a superior quality of service.  I asked, "Then why does my internet slow down around 7pm, because the Brighthouse service didn't do that".  All the customer service agent has to say was, "That's not true."  Nice try.  He essentially called me a liar, about something I've seen firsthand, and I have experienced that same 7pm slowdown with a similar service we had in NC.  Sorry Verizon, we left Brighthouse because we thought we were saving a few bucks, and getting a higher speed on our internet.  Not true on both accounts and we're going back.    PS To the person who made this initial blog post, I noticed there were 484 views but no "likes"  - it's because that button won't let you click it, at least that's what I experienced on my end.  I'm certain there are a lot more people out there who deal with this same issue and are quite frustrated.
