Inherit Backup History?

I recently had repair work done by the Genius Bar on my MacBook Pro.  Now, when I go to back up to external hard drive, I get a warning message asking:
"Would you like this computer to inherit the backup history from “x’s MacBook Pro” on the “FreeAgent GoFlex Drive” backup disk?
The backup was created on a different computer. If you inherit this backup, it can no longer be used by the original computer."
How should I proceed?  The options are:  Create New Backup or Inherit Backup History
It seems that my MacBook does not recognize that it has been backed up before on my ext. HD.

When the logic board is replaced, it is as if you have a different MBP, hence the message.  The choice is yours, restore the data and the history or do a new back up.  The 'original' computer no longer exists since it is the old logic board.
Ciao.

If i selected to "Create a new backup" and then canceled that option but want to go back and select "Inherit backup history"; how do I go back and do that since now when I plug in my external hard drive, that option doesn't appear anymore?? Any Help? I bought a MacBook Air, but decided to return it for the newest model, and I wanted to back it up so that I can then back it up on my new MacBook Air. I didn't understand the option to Inherit or start a new back up, and therefore selected the option to create a new backup. I believe I should have selected to Inherit backup history so that when i back it up on the new MackBook Air, it appears the same as the one I'm returning.... Is there anyway that i can re-select the option to Inherit backup history for time machine?

  • Can I inherit backups from TWO drives onto a new Mac?

I am currently backing up my Macbook Pro to a Time Capsule which has a backup history of over a year. I am also backing up to a USB External drive.
I will be getting a new Macbook Air soon and I know that if I perform a full restore from my Time Capsule I will then be asked if I want to Inherit the backup history - which is what I want.
But what about the backup history on my USB External Drive? Can I also inherit the backup history of that?
The main reason I am asking is I have been thinking it would be much faster to perform a full restore from my USB External Drive - but if I did so would I still be able to inherit the backup of both my External drive AND my Time Capsule? As my Time Capsule has a much larger backup history on it.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes you can. When you set up the system again you can add the second drive as another Time Machine destination, and when you do so the system should ask you whether you would like to inherit the backups just as it does for the first TM drive. Select yes and it will maintain the drive as a separate backup destination but continue backing up to it.

  • How do I link the backup history from old mac to new? I cannot seem to do this through migration assistance.

I want to transfer the backup history associated with my old mac (which is on my airport time capsule) to my new mac. I used migration assistance to transfer everything from my old mac to new, but the backup history did not link. I tried using migration assistance again but it does not seem to allow me to link my backup history to the new mac. I am running out of ideas and please help.

The late James Pond wrote a treasure trove of Time machine tips, including this one:
    Time Machine - Troubleshooting
    B5.  Would you like to inherit (or re-use) the backup . . . ?

  • Inherit backups in a unique migration situation

We had two Macs running Snow Leopard. Old Mac A (2006 MacBook Pro 17") was connected direclty to an external drive and used Time Machine there. Old Mac B (2006 MacBook 13") mounted the same drive to use for Time Machine backups by first connecting to Old Mac A across the network, and so its Time Machine backup was stored in a sparsebundle on that drive.
We upgrade both Macs, New Mac A (2012 MacBook Pro 15") replacing Old Mac A, New Mac B (2012 Mac Mini) repalcing Old Mac B. However, because of some changes we wanted to make, the Time Machine backup drive is now connected directly to New Mac B (stationary Mini allowing it to stay connected permanently).
I discovered information in places like http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html and http://simon.heimlicher.com/articles/2012/07/10/time-machine-inherit-backup-usin g-tmutil that pointed me to tmutil which could help me with inheritbackup and associatedisk. However, New Mac A was not able to inherit Old Mac A's backup across the network, and I'm concerned more generally about the fact that the machine's have swapped roles in terms of which one is connected directly and which is connected across the network.
Any advice on exactly what steps I should take to properly connect New Mac A to Old Mac A's Time Machine Backup, and New Mac B to Old Mac B's? Could this possibly include moving Old Mac A's backup into a new sparsebundle (for use across a network) and/or moving Old Mac B's backup out of its sparsebundle to the drive's root directory (for use with a direct-connected drive)?

The pondini.org link says that sometimes the associatedisk command will work over a network. More importantly, the only reason I even disocvered there was such a thing as the possibility of inheriting a backup is that when I first connected the external drive to the Mini, fully expecting to have to start a new TM backup from scratch, TM suddenly popped up asking me if I wanted to inherit the backup. It found it on its own, somehow knew there was an association between the backup set and the data on its on drive (which I had restored via Setup Assistant), even though the backup it had found now direct-connected was the very same one that was in a sparsebundle and used to only be run across the network.
I haven't yet allowed the computer to actually backup, since I wanted to be sure about everything being connected/inherited/associated properly first. However, the fact that TM found that used-to-be-across-the-network backup on its own, asked me to inherit it, and the fact that I did successfully run the inheritbackup command on the Mini, all lead me to believe that there is somewhat more to the story than what you just said, even if that may be the official claim about how TM works.

  • Time Machine backup history present but inaccessible after Mountain Lion clean install

    Hi all,
A few days ago, I took the Mountain Lion plunge and after performing all the preliminary data copying to external hard drives as well as on last Time Machine backup to my dedicated Time Machine external hard drive, I booted from my ML recovery USB thumb drive, reformatted the internal HD, and proceeded to perform a clean install of OS X 10.8.
The ML install and initial setup completed without a hitch, and I had no difficulty in reconnecting to my existing Time Machine EHD and performing an initial backup of the freshly upgraded Mountain Lion system. It took several minutes in the "preparing backup" phase; but once it got through that, it backed up my entire system (which was basically nothing more than the new OS and iLife at this point) within an hour or so.  Time Machine has since worked reliably in performing the automatic backups every hour.
But here's the problem:  My backup history went back all the way to March 2011 before the ML upgrade, and it still (sorta kinda) does now.  However, although I can see all of the backup history tick marks when I enter TM, the ONLY SELECTABLE backups are from the point where ML was installed and onward.  The previous Lion and Snow Leopard backups are visible; just not selectable.  I also verified that the physical backup folders are still present on my TM EHD dating all the way back to last March.  I ran a verify and repair operation on the TM volume, and it came back clean.  I have disconnected and reconnected the TM EHD to TM and of course rebooted, but no joy.  TM did not force me to "start over" with a new backup as some posters have complained of. And it seems to be working fine otherwise.
Has anyone else had a similar experience after upgrading to ML?  Any thoughts on how I might reconnect to my TM backup history?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How did you put your data back after the erase?
I didn't, or rather I haven't yet.  Basically, all I have done so far is:
Reformat Lion HD and install ML clean from USB thumb drive
Run through initial virgin boot setup, e.g. enter my Apple ID and desired user account info
Change a few preferences (the "use right side of mouse for secondary click" setting first and foremost!)
Configured Time Machine to use pre-existing Time Machine Backups EHD and let it do initial backup (which it simply added on to the existing backup history as I had hoped)
Drag-and-drop copied my saved iTunes library (~50 GB) from my ext. FW drive to my new Home Music folder and confirmed that iTunes was working and able to sync with my iPhone and iPad
Installed the iLife suite from my Bundled Applications DVD and then updated those apps via the App Store
Obviously the iTunes folder is an exception to "I haven't yet", but basically, the Lion's share (pun intended) of my previous data has not yet been copied back from the temporary storage on the EHD.
The reason you can't see the backups of the old home folder from the new one is simply that they have different names.
Yes, I know that now.  Everything was fine all along.  I just didn't realize that TM [quite sensibly] grays out any backup history finder windows and right-hand-side tick marks that contain no backup of the folder currently in focus.  Since the folder I had in focus was one that didn't exist before I installed Mountain Lion, there was nothing to access except for the most recent post-upgrade backups.
    Thanks much for your help.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is you could not restore a backup in the test server farm.
I suggest you do as the followings:
    1. You may need to add the farm account in the backup folder security and assign the full control to the farm account and try again.
    2. If it still doesn’t work, you can restore the web application via Power Shell Command.
A detailed article about restoring via PowerShell:

Feel free to reply if the issue still exists.

  • Recover a specific backup from backup history with dbmcli

    hello friends,
how can i recover a specific backup from backup history with dbmcli with inizialization. in dbmcli i can only find methods for medium recovery. with dbmgui i try "instance" in menu, then "Recovery with Initialization", then i try i choose  admin_state, then i choose the radiobutton recover from backup history. I get my choice with specific date.
How can I build a script in dbmcli for this scenario. when i am try the command backup_history_open and backup_history_list i cant see the specific backup, what i see in dbmgui.
the backup history item, that i need has a specific system key "492FB68F0002". with which dbmcli  command i get this system key for recover.
which command i take for this scenarion db_activate RECOVER?
    many thanks for suggestions,
    christoph

    > how can i record the staments for my script?
Do you know the "show console" feature in DBMGUI/DB Studio?
With that you can display all commands used by DBMGUI and the Recovery Wizard.
    > I am looking for an automatism to recover an instance from a specific item from backup history, because we test ower deliverys with import in stms - see return codes.
Ok, but why do you need a recovery for that?
Use SNAPSHOTS instead (read the docu [here|http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/44/c4afa67ca22e17e10000000a114a6b/content.htm]!).
    Create your base instance.
    Create a SNAPSHOT.
    Now run your tests.
When you finished your tests, simply restore the SNAPSHOT.
    This takes seconds.
Bring the database online again and run some new tests.
When you want your initial instance again - just restore the SNAPSHOT once again.
Really, SNAPSHOTs are made for such a scenario.

    > 7. db_offline in dbmcli context
    > 8. startsap all in sidadm context
Ok. if you still would like to do it  this way... how about this:
    dbmcli -U c -i refresh_db.txt
    refresh_db.txt:
    ==============
    db_admin
    db_activate RECOVER <medium_name> DATA AUTOIGNORE
    db_online
db_execute SET LOG AUTO OVERWRITE ON
    db_offline
I leave the stopsap/startsap and the rest of the script to you, but I guess you got the idea.
BTW: there's no need to check for restart ability of the database after the recovery since by definition all full data restores are restartable with MaxDB!
So have fun (and go for the SNAPSHOTS instead!).

  • -24894 Backup history file corrupted

    Hi,
this weekend the disk of my database server was full and the backup-script cannot perform the backup. I have clean up some space on the disk and like to perform a backup. First i take a look at my backup history. But clicking the Backup History in the Database Manager will show me the error "-24894 the backup history file is corrupted [backup_history_open]". This message is not in the documentation.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks, best regards,
    Mario

    Check the files
    /sapdb/data/wrk/<SID>.mdf
    and
    /sapdb/data/wrk/<SID>.knl
and check there for incomplete lines.
Before making any changes copy the files somewhere to a save place.

  • I need help finding a backup history?

i need help figuring out how to restore my ipod  its back up but i was wondering if there is some how a feature where i can find like a back up history so i can restore my ipod to a backup from a different date instead of the last backup any ideas? I accidentally jacked up my ipod and i need to see if i can go to a sort of backup history from apple so i can restore my ipod from a different date instead of the LAST back up

This shows what I see if I use the Edit > Preferences > Devices in iTunes.
(Use Alt or Ctrl+B if you don't see the menu bar.)
It shows just one backup for each of four devices (I don't normally update at this machine). As I recall if there were more, the additional backups would contain the restore date as part of the left-hand column.
I suspect you're not going to like what you find.

  • HT3275 Continue using Time Machine backup history after switching disk from local to Airport Extreme?

I have been using Time Machine on my iMac for backups for quite some time. The disk I've been using is a single disk connected via USB. Now that I got an AirPort Extreme base station, I wanted to switch the disk drive to the AirPort Extreme, but continue to use my existing backup history and not start a new one.
When I did that, Time Machine complaint that the disk does not have enough space left to do the initial backup. Again, I don't want to start a new backup history but rather seamlessly append to and continue with my existing backup history that's already on the disk.
    Is this possible and how?
    Thanks,
    Torsten

As the other poster says, that's usually unreliable and not supported by Apple. See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
When I did that, Time Machine complaint that the disk does not have enough space left to do the initial backup.
That's because Time Machine stores backups differently when they're done over a network.  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for an explanation.

  • Keeping backup history after reinstalling Yosemite

Can I reinstall (clean) Yosemite and keep my backup history?

Have you tried making a backup of your main.db file then try viewing it with Skype log viewer or Sqlite database viewer?
    http://nirsoft.net/utils/skype_log_view.html
    http://sqlitebrowser.org/
    https://suurjaak.github.io/Skyperious/
If the data is there you should be able to read it.  If there is some corruption in the database file you can try using Skyperious to see if it can repair it or join it with another empty database file (cleared history).  In any case you may want to backup your %appdata%/Skype folder before attempting such things.
If you have root access to your phone you could also try backing up that main.db file or possibly transplanting that information over to your desktop if the data is missing by replacing the current file or using Skyperious to merge the old data.  Remember when you perform clean installs of your OS your Skype history does not go with you.  It would be best to retrieve that main.db file from before you reloaded the OS via a planned backup.  What could be happening is the data could be attempting to sync from your phone but eventually only pulls/limits the information from the cloud (up to 30 days).

  • Cannot inherit backups as sudo tmutil not found in terminal

I get a "sudo: tmutil: command not found" message on terminal when I am trying to inherit backups as per the fantastic instructions on the website by pondini. What does it mean and how can I correct it?
My old backups on time machine are not highlighted on time machine so cannot restore them. This is either because I have restored the OS or repaired the external HD used for backups.

Lets' see....The thread is titled "Cannot inherit backups as sudo tmutil not found in terminal".
The OP just replied "Any idea what would be equivalent for 10.6.8 to inherit backups? Or is it even possible to do so for 10.6.8?"
The question was asked in the post right before mone. I should have highlighted that, I guess. Sorry.
To answer your second comment, I DID "go to the website" and looked for information. Including finding this thread.
    DId not find an answer.
For anyone out there looking for an actual answer beyond "go find it yourself", the fact is that you CANNOT reconnect a backup in SL. THIS asnwered my question and I hope it helps others looking for the same.
