I am new to the mac word and I am trying to learn how to use this.....unfortunately the original user lost his password and I can't get into anything.....Is there a way to erase and start from scratch.I have 2 discs (Mac OS X Install 1 and 2) but I do not se a bundle disc......
Any help will do......I would love to find out if this a before 2008 model or not and how can I find out what model and OS it has?
Thank you so much in advance.....I am ready to switch from the PC wold and dive into the Mac world

To identify your Mac, go to >About this Mac>More Info. The first window will give you the version of the software, the processor, and the Memory. If you go on to "More Info">Hardware, you will see the Model Name (MacBook Pro) and the Model identifier (MacBookPro3,1) or something similar. The model identifier number will tell you exactly which MBP you have.
You can the use Mactracker to look up all the particulars on your machine:

All I can say is that I REALLY like my Touch 4th gen because I have all sorts of capabilities in a small form: e-mail, web browsing, news, weather, books, magazines, etc. etc.  Plus lots and lots of apps out there, including so many free ones.  I use the Cloud a lot so it's great to have everything sync'd to my MacBookPro (e-mail, Evernote, Pocket, etc.)
It would be easier, though, to do some of this, especially magazines, on the iPad mini, but, again, I love the small size of the Touch.
As for the 5th gen instead of the 4th, the fifth has Siri and the 3D feature in maps, which are great.  And I'm sure it's a lot faster in iOS 6 than the 4th gen.  And cool colors!
    Don't know if this helps . . .

For some reason, your Mac doesn't recognise that a keyboard is present, so it looks for a wireless keyboard. The question is, why doesn't your Mac recognise that a keyboard is attached?
First, you need to make sure you remove all peripherals, especially USB peripherals (the keyboard is on the USB bus). Then restart holding down the Shift key. This should boot in Safe mode. If the computer boots normally (not in safe mode) and the keyboard is still not working, try resetting the SMC

If that still doesn't fix the problem, then the keyboard (or its controller) is probably damaged and needs to be replaced.

  • What is the best external hard drive for macbook pro I think I want firewire for storage and usb for time machine

I have a macbk pro. I think a usb external drive would be fine for time machine but I'd like a fire wire external drive to store files.
Any recommendations on brand? The last recommendations were dated 2006/7
I have been waiting for a 1TB  g-drive. Apparently they are special order. I did not think I needed anything larger than 1 TB to backup the 500GB internal drive.
I thought I'd get something bigger for storage. From what I have read I think its best not to partition the drive for backup and storage.
Also I'd like to have a bootable copy of my internal hard drive is that possible?

Don't know about the Best... But I have been using these without any issues...

  • I recently inherited a macbook pro when my good friend passed away. the screen is password locked. is there any way around the login without knowing the password???

How can I get past the password locked login without the password

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted from the disc, the USB device, or Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • Macbook Pro Screen dimming

I recently inherited a MacBook Pro that I had previously bought for another person. They never used it much. Upon attempting to do anything with it, I'm finding that the screen won't stay lit, at least not by much. I can go into the system preferences and brighten it, but each time I wake or restart it, it has returned to a dimmer setting. Once, I awoke it from sleep to find the screen completely black, although a on-off sequence (couldn't see to do a proper restart) returned it to at least a dim setting. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi,
Just noticed the last few nights my screen going dim. It is plugged in to power, the option for ambient light is checked in System Preferences.
If the room is the same lighting conditions why would the screen dim? In fact, if the room is getting darker wouldn't the screen tend to get brighter and not dim.
I have had the machine a few months (June 2009), and only recently in the last 2 nights noticed the screen is dimming. My concern is that there is something wrong with the display, since I never noticed this behavior before.
If I put my finger over the video cam the screen gets brighter.... guess the light sensor is right next to it.
Your thoughts... do you think I have an issue?

  • How do I change the apple id on the copy of Lion that shipped with my Macbook Pro?

I've inherited a Macbook Pro that shipped with Lion installed. The app store is showing three updates for iPhoto, GarageBand, and iMovie. When I try to update them it request the password for the Apple ID for the person who set up the Macbook. These apps came with Lion which came with the Macbook. I could reload the OS but that would wipe out my configuration. How can I change the Apple ID to reflect me as the new owner so I can update the apps included with Lion? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

If you know the seller, then maybe it can be done; according to the licensing agreement, if you sell/gift a Mac which came with Lion preinstalled, you are allowed to make a one time transfer of your software license. That would involve a call to Apple (I've not had to do this, but I've read that you need to call Apple and explain that you wish to transfer the Lion license from xxxxx to xxxxxx - don't know if it involves name/address or any other info). So, if your seller is willing to do this, and Apple re-registers the MBP in your name, you shouldn't have to do anything. You may want to check into this because it also may play a role when there is an OS update - not sure that you'll be able to get that with your different Apple ID.

  • External VGA monitors are not working only with my Macbook Pro 2012mid version

    Hi all,
I have a macbook pro 13' 2012mid version, running the latest version of Mavericks, 10.9.2. If I connect my macbook to any extrernal VGA monitor (I have tried 4 different monitors), then the external display is detected in system preferences, but the monitor is showing only black screen (no signal). I am 100% sure, that my minidisplay port, the cable and the monitors are working properly, cause if I boot the same macbook from bootcamp win7 partition, then external monitors are working well.
I have also tried the same miniDP VGA with an older macbook pro (I think it is a model from year 2011, but also running Mavericks 10.9.2) on the same displays and the monitors are working fine. So the problem must be with in my OS X.
A have also tried some things, that I found on the net, like booting with the plugged in monitors in safe mode, reseting pram, I tried different settings for the external monitor in the system preferences (resolution, refresh rate...) but nothing helped. External monitor stayed recognized in system preferences, but with black screen and no signal.

Your post is incredibly hard to read, font is way to small.
If you used Boot Camp Assistant to create a partition to install Windows to you need a REAL Windows 7 or 8 install media and license key and you have to actually install Windows on your Mac. Boot camp is only for creating a partition to install Windows and starting the Windows install from REAL Windows install media.
That Windows install media has to be a DVD disc, if your Mac has a built in DVD drive (Apple does not allow Windows to be install any other way on Mac computers that originally come with a built in DVD drive), or from a USB stick with the actual Windows install files on it (Not an ISO of the Windows install files).
So the question is did you install Windows on your Mac? It doesn't look like it from the Option key boot and the list of available Boot Devices you posted.

  • Is there an adaptor to hook up an HDMI cable to a MacBook Pro?

    hi there,
I have an old MacBook Pro i think dating back to 2000. I can't connect an HDMI cable in order to hook it up to my TV,
did they come up with a converter for this issue??
    thanks for your help

okay this is what it says:

    model identifier:
    MacBookPro1,2
    model number:
    MA092xx/A
    Configuration:
    17"/D2.16G/1G/120/SD-DL

  • UTube video sound works on iPhone5S but not on Macbook Pro?

UTube videos from a variety of sources works on iPhone5S but not on Macbook Pro? Thinking it has to do with recommended Flash settings on the MAC. Is there an app to resolve this inoperability on a MAC without having to make Flash active?

What format is the video? Is it .wmv? Do the DVD's have any type of protection or encryption? This information will help in finding a solution.

  • Stuck Disk in MacBook Pro (2009/10?)

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro i think from 2009.. I put a scrathed disk in and it wont eject, or register it.. I have tried the Terminal trick as i do every time i do get a disk stuck... I know that when i went to the apple store he took the disk drive out with a screw driver, so im not sure wether to do that, any help appreciated.
    cheers

    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • Macbook Pro retina 13.5 128GB!?

    Hello!
I have purchased a Macbook Pro with retina display with an 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD. This is my first mac and i'm a bit worried about the storage. I will be using if for college work, pictures, surfing the web, listening to music, watching films, and that's about it. Of course none of you know how much i am looking to store on in yet (i don't either) but there isn't a huge amount of everything and i just wanted to hear if anyone has 128GB and if it works for them!? I use Google drive at my college, so a lot of my documents are on there.
I am also looking to sync my iPhone to my Macbook (unsure how to do this yet) so will that take up even more space?
    Thank you all!

OWC is a trusted vendor and offers upgrades, and can do the upgrades.

Your system has Thunderbolt which can offer fast external storage.
there should be small fast SSD, and a small "case' for your old SSD (you can clone your system).
This is not the MacBook Pro forum, get a lot of their users here.

I think 128GB is so small only a tablet, maybe a really cheap MacBook Air should.
getting a larger M.2 SSD blade that plugs in should help. This is for 2013, only an 'example' and alternate company to OWC

  • Changing username and password on used Macbook pro?

I just inherited a MacBook Pro from a friend who left back to Saudi Arabea. He had gotten it from another friend who thought it was broken (though it turned out it just needed a new charger). Now that its working, it has a user and password, and I want to know how to change it, because I can't download anything without that dang password, and my friend didn't know it had a password to begin with. What can I do?

You need to wipe the drive completely and reinstall the OS. The only way you're going to do that is with the original disks that shipped with the Mac. If you choose not to wipe it clean, you run the risk of allowing the keyloggers and other malware that the previous owner installed to steal your personal information.
What OS is it running? Go to the About This Mac menu item in the Apple menu and it will list a number like 10.8.1 in the version. While there, click on More Info and post what type of Mac it is.
For instance, on mine, it is a Macbook Pro, 13 inch, Mid 2010 model.
If it is running 10.7 or 10.8, you will never be able to reinstall the OS as it is linked to the original owners AppleID.
Depending on what OS shipped with the Mac, there are several options. If it shipped with Snow Leopard, and you don't have the disks that came with it, Call AppleCare and order replacement disks. They will need the Serial number which you can find on the About This Mac window.
If it came with Lion, then you will need to Call AppleCare and have the license transferred to your AppleID.
If you are logged in, then you can go to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and create a new user by clicking on the + sign. If it is grayed out and the padlock is locked, you are out of luck.

  • New Macbook Pro has changed identities

Not sure exactly which device has caused the problem - we have two iphone 4S, two iPads, and an iMac - one of which has led my new Macbook Pro to think it belongs to my wife.  Though I did not enter her name when registering the computer, when I install new software, her name always comes up as the default name in the registration box.  I assume that either something cloud related has done this - since none of her devices have been physically plugged into the new Macbook Pro - or, less likely, that our home network is somehow involved.  Just need help determining which device is the most likely culprit, and maybe some help keeping our clouds separate?

The cloud was my first thought.  Since posting initially, I've noticed that a couple of programs downloaded on the iMac have shown up in downloads on the MacBook.  I just need to be able to build some sort of firewall between the two machines.  New enough to Mac that I'm not even clear where cloud settings are, and how to make adjustments to them.

  • Locked macbook pro wiht no cd rom...

    Hi All:
I just inherited a Macbook Pro at the office. Unfortunately, it arrived without a OS media or a password.
Can I order a replacement OS DVD from Apple? Is there a trick to reset the password?
    THANXS
    amb

Until you get the appropriate OS installer disks you can set up the MBP with a new password and new user (yourself). Follow this:
restart the machine with the Command and S keys held down, and type the following commands into the prompt in order:
    mount -uw /
    mv /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb.old
    mv /var/db/.AppleSetupDone /var/db/.AppleSetupDone.old
    usr/libexec/create_nidb
    shutdown -h now
The Setup Assistant will reappear the next time your computer is turned on. Be sure to enter the commands properly, as you may damage your setup by making a mistake.
