Inherited iBook G4

I just inherited my daughter's iBook G4 and need some help identifying three cables she never used. The tags still attached (I'm assuming are part numbers) read: 603-0607, 590-5254, and 591-0075. Also, where can I obtain an owners-instructional manual for this iBook? If this helps, the iBook was purchased in November 2005. Thanx.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The 590-5254 is an AC cord that can be used with the power brick. You can pull off the little box with the AC prongs, and this cable will plug into it. The 603-0607 is an Apple VGA adaptor. I don't know what the last one is--unless it was the phone cord for dial up, which is the only other cord that came with mine.
You should be able to go to the Apple Support site and download a manual for your iBook. In it there will be illustrations which will help you to identify the cables.
Good luck!

  • Inherited iBook

    Hello all,
I just inherited my father's iBook (he is on to newer and faster machines) and would like to basically start from scratch. I would like to format the hardrive and reregister the computer. I can't seem to find any information on how to wipe the hard drive online or in the manual. I have the original software application discs to reinstall the applications, so that is not a problem. Any advice?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Which version of the OS is installed on the iBook?
    How much RAM is installed?
    Which browser are you using?
How and to what are you attempting to upgrade?

  • Can't boot iBook with install disc

    Hi All,
I've inherited an old clamshell iBook that freezes every time I try to boot from the install disc.
The iBook came with 0S9.2 installed and everything seemed to be working OK. I then tried to upgrade it using a retail Jaguar disc and it froze on booting up. Now it won't even load OS9 but instead gives me a blinking folder with a question mark.
When I try to install from the Jaguar boot disc, I get the Apple logo and then it freezes right there. I tried zapping the P-Ram a few times and that didn't fix it. I tried holding Option key when loading and got to the screen where it lists boot options. I chose OS X and it after the logo comes up, it freezes.
Have also tried re-seating and completely removing the RAM. No difference.
When I go into verbose mode I get some kind of kernel panic error freeze and the keyboard won't let me input anything.
I reached the open firmware screen and it says Powerbook2,1 4.1.7f4 so I think that means my firmware is fine for OS X.
I unfortunately don't have access to an OS 9.2 disc so can't boot into that from disc. I think my 9.2 system folder needs to be re-blessed or something like that but have no way to reach it.
    Any suggestions?

Ok, well, I believe that in order to re-bless the OS 9 system folder, you need the OS 9 CD. (I'm not an OS 9 expert, but that's what I've seen online).
However, if you install 10.2 (or 10.3) on the computer, it should boot right into it and you don't even "need" OS 9 any more.
I'm starting to think you have a hardware problem of some kind, and the first place to check is the RAM. OS X is more finicky than OS 9 was with RAM, so do you have another memory module you could install to check? Or perhaps another clamshell (like was suggested) to try your RAM in?
Do you have an Apple Hardware test disk? My next suggestion would be to get one and to run the test and see what (if any) hardware is having problems.
And one more thought: if you can boot using the 10.3 disk, try running Disk Utility and repairing your disk a couple of times. Maybe there's a problem in your hard drive.

  • Please Help My Daughter - iBook G4 Needs Software Upgrade ??

I have recently inherited an iBook G4 1.2 GHZ 256 RAM I think 30 or 50 GB.  I cannot tell now because of what I did.  The iBook was not working and I found it had a bad solder on one of the chips (a common issue on this model).  Once repaired, it needed a new battery, and then it sprang right to life.  The iBook worked great - I could use Safari, Garage Band, etc, but due to it's age, Itunes did not work and so I thought if I reinstalled the original operating system (Panther 10.3.5 circa 2004) from the original discs, then I could upgrade from there until I found an iTunes version I could use with a newly reset iPod I had and use it basically just for music.  BIG MISTAKE. After I cleanly installed it all, I now cannot use Safari, profiler won't open and neither will most other applications - I double click them, they flash once and then go away on the sidebar.  So, I need to find a way to upgrade this machine past 10.3.5 so I can get it to work.  Right now, I can only get to the internet using ie for Mac 5.2 - UGH !!! Now I know why Apple stopped using that software.  Anyway, I was doing all of this to get a clean version of iTunes on it so as a surprise, my daughter could sell it and the iPod to raise money for a class trip she is taking to New York in the Spring of 2015.  Please please help me.  Is it as simple as getting updated OS software? I have tried a Tiger disc, but it stopped before it really even got started and said it could not be loaded.    I can see the previous user still has files under user and I can see the folder for the previous system, but they are not accessible. I do have a 27" Mac desktop if that will help me to upgrade the iBook in any way.  Thank you for reading all of this.  Please let me know what options I might have to get this running so it can be sold off. • Connect IBOOK g3 to netgear model wpn824v2

I just inherited an Ibook G3. I have a netgear Model WPN824v2 wireless router. I am not able to get an internet connection wirelessly. The ibook shows my wireless network name, but when I enter my password, the ibook says it isn't a good password. I am totally confused. Please help

My iBook also doesn't connect to our NetGear Router with wireless N standard. Our router is supposed to be backward compatible with wireless b and g standards but I think this is at the heart of our problem. If I discover anything I'll let u know. I intend to borrow a belkin usb wireless n adapter or similar and see if I can get to it that way or be logging into it from the Vista computer and checking that it is enabled for the older standard.
I will be watching this to see if our problem is resolved.

  • Available software for old iBook & G4tower?

I inherited a 14 inch iBook from my mother running 10.4.11 & I also have an old G4 tower running 10.4.11 & OS 9. Is there any newer OS system I can install that would be compatible with either of these, and where would I get such a thing? What are the security risks accessing the internet using an older browser that I cannot update anymore? Does it hurt to browse sites as long as I avoid doing anything financial? Is there any point in try to update these older computers and still trying to use them. I have had no problem networking them with my newer iMac running Maverick. My husband would like to use the older computers to browse the internet for information on mountain climbing.

Mac OS X 10.5.8 is the newest system that will run on G4s as long as they are a minimum of 867 Mhz (dual processor 800 Mhz doesn't count, and 1 Ghz and higher are more than 867 Mhz).
The disadvantage is that unless the tower is the right model, you'll lose access to Mac OS 9:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757 (tells you which towers can boot into 9 & 10.5).
The iBook G4 can only use Classic, which is gone in Mac OS X 10.5 and later.
Cloning the system to a Firewire external hard drive is possible to maintain the older operating system as it was before, with older versions of Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper, and should be done prior to any upgrade or software install anyway.  Except for the original PCI PowerMac G4 (which is too slow for 10.5 anyway), you can boot off Firewire hard drives Mac OS X.  A second internal hard disk on the tower for 10.4 is another possibility.  But Parallel ATA hard drives are getting scarcer for that option.  And may need a jumper to handle the slower bus speed.   Disk Utility can be used to format the drive Apple Partition map so the operating system can be installed.  GUID is not understood by most PowerPC 10.4 systems.
http://www.apple.com/usergroups/ is a good source for finding people with older software.   Otherwise it really is hit and miss with search engines such as C!Net & Macupdate.  Do not download MacKeeper or any system cache cleaning software, whatever you do.

  • IBooks item no longer available in Australian store

    # I just sent this to Apple support, which I think outlines my situation. I thought it worth asking here also
    # The support page wouldn't allow me to post, so I took some others advice and kept original post a sentence...that seems to work...then edit with more detail, as I am now!
    Hi Apple.
    I need your help.
I have owned an iPad 2 since 2011, which I purchased a handful of books via the older version of iBooks, namely all the Song of Ice and Fire complete collection by George RR Martin.
These are used for my own pleasure, and also for reviews and research I do online for the Game of Thrones TV phenomenon, plus general literature blogs and sites.
I purchased the 5 available titles successively over one year, approx around 2012-2013 timeframe.
All the books were working fine until iOS 8 was installed onto my iPad 2. Apart from very slow page loading and other constant glitches, which are still present, my main reason for connecting Apple support is:
    - the 5thbook in the series, A Dance with Dragons, was purchased as one whole book in a single purchase. This book has an "update" prompt on my Ipad 2 iBooks library, but it comes up as
"item unavailable in the Australian store"?
    # the ID/link/info is : https://itunes.apple.com/au/book/dance-dragons-complete-edition/id435202115?isIn PurchasedView=true&mt=11
It is now ONLY available as 2 separate parts e.g. book1 & Book 2 via the iBOOKS STORE.
I want to re-access that original purchase and sync to my new macbook retina.
I will not be paying for the 2 separate books, as I have already purchased the complete book.
    What are my options?
    Thank you kindly

  • IBook can't(and won't) log in.

    Hello all.
I recently inherited an old iBook G4.
It's worked perfectly until I installed an app called shapeshifter.
After installing said app, I decided to turn it off after having a few errors with it.
    I then rebooted.
After this, I tried to log in.
It wouldn't let me click on my name, and after five seconds, went to what was effectively a huge terminal screen. Which asked me to log in
which I did, hoping it would log in to my user, unfortunately, it didn't all I got was a nice "Welcome to darwin"
and it just became a big terminal. please help.

Just at a guess, it sounds like the OS may have become corrupted. If so, you will need to reinstall it from the original discs that came with the machine. You should back up any data before attempting to reinstall the OS. Then you can attempt an Archive and Install. If you have no data to save, you could instead do an Erase and Install, and set it up fresh.
I am not sure what the "Welcome to Darwin" signifies unless there is also some form of kernel panic going on. Did you ever get a message telling you to restart your computer in 4 languages?
It sounds like the trouble started with the installation of Shapeshifter. Was the version you installed compatible with the version of the OS you are running?
If you didn't get the original discs, you should ask for them, as it is important that you have them.
    Good luck!

  • Connecting a Samsung monitor onto Ibook G4

I'm totally new to MAC so pardon my ignorance. I have an IBook G4 (inherited from my son) and I love it, but the monitor is small for all the time usage - hard on my eyes.
I have a Samsung monitor that measures 20" across and would like to use it, if possible. Can such a small MAC power a larger monitor like this? And what kind of adapter would I use? The Samsung monitor has the kind of port that has 2 screws on the sides.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
    lingting

Okay, so here's what you'll need to order/pick up.
The mini-VGA to VGA adapter(they changed the name & I almost didn't find it!): http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8639G/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
and a plain old VGA cable, like the one pictured here:
    http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-45138-Ultima-Video/dp/B00030AXNQ/ref=sr132?ie=UTF8&qid=1296447815&sr=8-32
You can get the VGA cable at most electronics stores. You might have to pay more money than you would with Amazon.com, but not necessarily. All you have to do is ask a salesperson for a VGA cable for a monitor & they should know what you need.
Let me know if you have more questions!

  • Ibook G3 won't boot

hello out there in apple land,
this may take a moment to describe.
i recently inherited an ibook G3 12" 800 running 10.2.8 OS. It worked really well for several months and i became a converted mac user. A little while ago a couple hours after having run disk utility and verifying/repairing the disk permissions, i had the sudden symptoms of the dreaded logic board failure: multicoloured horizontal lines all over, and squeezing to the left of the trackpad did make them go away but i still couldn't use it in that condition.
on a side note: the hd has been replaced following a guide on ifixit by my brother about a year ago after completely crashing.
i went through about a week of reading forums to figure out my fix. i tried the shim and it didn't work but i didn't put to much stock into that idea because i didn't want to grind down my bga over time. so the other option that presented itself was the heatgun. i have tried the fix about 4 times by now having totally covered everything but the graphics chip with tin foil and placing a small piece of wood overtop with a sqaure cut out for access to the graphics chip for some extra protection. i laid a coin over the chip to distribute heat and put a peice of solder on the coin to make sure it flowed.
so, after 4 or so attempts it still boots but only to the apple start up screen and has no gear underneath at all. it can stay like that for hours sometimes and sometimes just seems to overheat and shut off. i've tried booting it in safe mode, target, and just regularly, all three ways resulting in the chime to grey apple. i've also tried resetting the pram but no changes resulted.
by this point i'm not to concerned with saving any contents of my hd but i'm losing faith in the quality after having read forum after forum of dissapointed users. still though, given the choice, i would get another mac. is this an option i should start seriously considering or do i still have a hope of saving this little guy?

    Napadel,
so you're saying that regardless of if i'd spent the money and shipped it to Superior, my chip still would have failed?
Well that's not clear. My diagnosis would have been based on an extensive test of the GPU as I explained before to determine if your 7500 was a good candidate for reballing.
also what would you then say my options are.
This is from a recent post of mine:
"I just recently repaired a G3 iBook 900 MHz 14.1" that had the classic GPU problem. Unfortunately, while the GPU was healthy but loose before the reballing the "patient" died on the operating table. This is a known pitfall in the reballing process. So when I got the board back the GPU was working but totally dead exhibiting the dark moving shadows I've come to dread.
The GPU was a ATI 7500 so I referenced it to many other PC laptop graphics cards.
I settled on a new Inspiron 5100 ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 32Mb 9U768 on ebay and obtained it for $26 with shipping.
Dale at Superior swapped the chips and "Voila" the 900 works like new.
I have the Dell board and the 7500 chip and I thought that you all would be interested in what has been giving so many of us display headaches.
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
What you see is the bottom of the chip on the left and the mounting array on the graphics board on the right.
Even tho' this is a G3 the G4 chip is very similar."
The other place that does this work is First Phase.
Prices are like $75 for a reball and $50 for a reflow (probably not as good). You have to pull the board and send it to them."
Now of course that's if there was no other damage done by the heat gun.

  • Ipad deleting ibook app on sync

I just inherited an old ipad (2nd gen) running Ios5. I am currently using an Iphone 5S on iso7 and a macbook running Ios 10.9. This means that both my devices are running the new ibooks.
The old ipad can't run the latest ibook app so i'm having to run it on the old app, however, whenever I sync my ipad with my computer it tries to download the new ibooks, it can't, and it deletes the old app. It's a real hassle as I have to redownload it each time. Any way to make it keep the old app without trying to download the new one?

IIf the old iPad is an iPad 2 it can be updated to iOS 7.1.2. Do this and you won't have any problem with iBooks levels.

  • IBook not recognizing iSight

    Hi,
I recently inherited and iSight from a friend, but when I plug it into my iBook, the green light stays on for a few seconds, as if the iSight is starting up, and then it goes off.
However...when i start up with the iSight plugged in, the green light stays on permenantly, but it doesn't come up as a device one my Mac. Even when I look for it under the Firewire part of System Profiler, it doesn't come up.
Since it's not under warranty any more Apple wont replace it.
Has anyone heard of this problem? Is it my iSight, or my Firewire cable?
    Help would be....Awesome!!

    You're welcome, gavsten
The only way I know to tell which part is causing the problem is to do the tests.
If you cannot borrow or rent other equipment, you can buy it at any computer or electronics store.
If you do not have local access, the Apple "Store" link at the top of this page offers it via internet.
Please post back if you need more info before you can mark your question "Answered".

  • The last of the iBooks G4

I have purchased a iBook G4 ten days ago...its due for delivery at the weekend.
Apple have the G5 on sale as of today!!
Please tell me my iBook G4 is still an atractive purchase!
    Tc

I believe you can still cancel your order and order a MacBook.
I ordered an iBook G4 1.42 MHz model in December. Am I happy with it? Yes. I can surf the Net, do basic word processing, basic photo and video editing at speeds which seem reasonably fast to me, since the last Mac I owned was a PowerBook G4 12 inch, 867 MHz model. My daughter now has inherited it. My only major complaint is the keyboard.
If I had the chance to exchange for a comparably priced MacBook, would I do it, even though I'm happy with my iBook? You betcha! Either way, though, I see it as a no-loss situation. It's a choice between good and better.
