Initial Backup just doesn't start/finish

I recently installed my Time Capsule on my new Macbook. Everything with the Capsule works fine network wise, but when I go to do the Time Machine backup...a window pops up saying its preparing, then backing up, and then it just disappears. I know it hasn't actually backed up because 1) the initial backup is supposedly supposed to take hours and 2) there is nothing listed under "Latest Backup".
I've tried resetting the Time Capsule and still nothing. Ive also tried doing the online Apple help, but for some reason the site doesn't seem to think my Nov 20th purchase date is possible(!).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"gets stuck" - are there any error messages?
If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

If there is no loading bar, it's usually a problem with a third party kext file in OS X itself.
You can press the power button down to force a hardware shutdown, then reboot holding the shift key down on a wired or built in keyboard, this will disable them and you go around and update your third party software.
Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
Also take this time to backup your users files off the machine if possible.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Sometime that won't work and you need to do more

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 11 just doesn't start (Win7, 64bit, NEW image)

    Hi Everyone,
While Adobe Premiere Elements 10 is just working fine, Premiere Elements 11 won't start. I choose "Video Editor" from the Welcome screen, then select either open project or create new project. I then get to see pink/grey status bar, but nothing else happens. Elements just won't start. Note: The Organizer is working fine.
When I check the Win7 Event list, this is the error that I see:

I checked this community, where several other folks seem to have the same problem. Only few of them have found a solution, but none of them is working for me.
I did install the most recent video driver.
Does anyone know what to do based on the davacore.dll issue displayed above?
    Would apprecaite any hint!

but then when i tried to do:
[oracle@oraclebk bin]$ emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create
    i got the follow error:

How can i fix this error. Can someone help me fix this please.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

It should just work. If not then one or more of the ports mentioned in the error message are claimed (do "netstat -a" or use "arp") OR you are not allowed by the system to claim these ports (for instance by a firewall or "bastille" program). This should normally not be happening, but if you have name resolution problems of your machine and the machine "thinks" the server you are claiming is a machine from outside itself, then it will be blocked claiming the needed ports (maybe stupid example, but maybe it will give you the answer you need). "Bastille" is very (can be very) agressive regarding blocking stuff, If it is installed / enabled...

  • SimpleSave portable backup drive--doesn't start automatically

I have the SimpleSave portable drive (Model sd320a)  and have used it successfully.  However, although when I first starting using it the drive automatically started when I plugged it into my computer, it no longer does.  I must have changed some setting on my computer, but I can't figure out what I did.  I now cannot get the device to start.  I followed the instructions in the user manual (to start it through Vista Computer and clicking on the icon), but four file folders just come up and nothing I click on will start the application.
I use a Dell laptop with Vista Premium.  Can you tell me how to fix this problem so the drive starts automatically again?  Thanks.

I deleted some files off my backup drive [Simple Save] and now I find I have nothing on the drive at all. How do I replenish it to when I bought it a few weeks ago? Lanc

  • Safari 5.0 just doesn't start

i just installed the update, restarted the mac and all, and now safari isn't working at all. it looks as if it's starting, but no window opens... i don't have time machine set, and i'm worried i'm stuck with it not working. please help me !!!
    thanks

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
If you had any third party Safari plugins or input managers installed go here Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
Try Resetting Safari also from the Safari Menu Bar, Safari/Reset Safari. Tick the top 5 boxes then click Reset.

  • My Itunes just doesn't start up

I click it,nothing happens. it is iTunes 7, I upgraded a couple days ago and haven't tried it until now, but nothing happens now. No error messages, no nothing. so I switched to the other account on my computer (both administrative accounts) and tried to start it and it said I couldn't run 2 applications of iTunes at once, and it said I should ask the other user to close that one. But then I switch back to the original and iTunes is not open nor on my taskbar.
What exactly is going on here and how do I fix it?

Thanks but I already did read all of the help notes, which aren't very helpful for this.  I did find out the problem- Apple.....they evidently changed one of the major upsides to their old software- being able to back up your entire library onto dvd's- so you can longer do that or restore from the dvds created from older versions of itunes.  I suspect greed is at play in that Apple now wants you to pay $24.95 per year to use a "cloud" service where they back it up for you.  I can buy a lifetime supply of back up dvds for one year's worth of cloud.  So I am now looking into other music software as I am Appled-out.  There is no reason for them to take away the back up portion of the software other than to sell you thrir cloud service.  As we have already given them a ton of money for 5 Ipods and a bunch of music, I think we have contributed enough.  Time to look to solutions outside of the Apple money tree.  But thank you for reading and replying.

  • I've tried to update Itunes but it will not start.  I don't get any error messages, it just doesn't start updating.

I've tried updating itunes but nothing happens.  It always asks me if I want to download the newest version but when I click download it does nothing.  Then when I open itunes again it asks me the same question.

Try downloading an installer for the new version directly from the Apple Website, debra:

Damn you're right. The pacman cache filled the disk...
    Problem solved - thanks!
Only question left is:What are the correct permissions for /tmp since I'd like to set them back to default.

  • ITunes on 64 bit doesn't start, recognised as 32 bit program

    Hi,
    I use windwows 7 Professional 64 bit,
when I run itunes installer everything goes fine (except that it installs in x86 folder!) but when I try to run itunes it just doesn't start, nothing shows up and in task manager i see "itunes.exe*32" which means it is recognised as a 32bit program!!!
    how can I solve this?
I also tried with itunes 8 and 9 but nothing worked

no error messages at all. ... quick time works
many thanks ... that's got one possibility with an error-message-free iTunes launch failure ruled out already.
Checking on another possibility that has been common in recent times, now.
Try (by way of experiment) disabling the BonJour Service.
In your Start Menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Maximise the window to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the BonJour Service and select "Properties". In the "General" tab, set Start-up type to "Disabled".
Restart the PC, and try launching iTunes again. Does it launch this time?
If iTunes launches with the BonJour Service disabled, by any chance do you have a recent version of IOBit's Advanced SystemCare utility currently installed on the PC? If so, try uninstalling and reinstalling Advanced SystemCare. Can you launch iTunes without having to disable the BonJour Service now?

  • Jobs on windows run time doesn't start

    Hi,
actually I'm trying to run the latest lotus notes framework but the initial load job doesn't start on my production environment. The test environment runs normaly.
It seems to be a problem with the Windows runtime, as the job runs with the java runtime.
I know, there are VB-Scripts within the notes job, so the switch to java runtime was only for testing purposes.
    Any suggestions?
    Kind regards,
    Achim Heinekamp

    Hi Matt,
    you made my day!
I was sure that the connection strings are right. After your hint, I've checked them and ... the connection string for the windows runtime was without password.
    Kind regards,
    Achim Heinekamp

  • Designjet 111 doesn't start prinring or stops in the middle

    hi,
I recently bought a designjet 111. The first page I printed (linedrawings) came out perfectly, the second page I tried (linedrawings + some small pictures) the printer didn't start anymore.
Now I have  the same problem: the printer just doesn't  start. I tried turning on and off my laptop and printer, changed USB-ports, turned off the 'off line' sign,... nothing seems to work.
Then all of a sudden it started printing (don't know what i did differently), but stopped after 5 centimeters, rolled of the page and cut it off. I tried again and then it printed 30 centimeters and stopped. Now it doesn't print at all anymore.
    What can I do?

  • Time Machine doesn't acknowledge initial backup

I purchased a Time Capsule and quickly and happily built a new 802.11n home wireless network with it. Yay. Then I hooked up my iMac to the Time Capsule via ethernet to do my initial Time Machine backup, knowing that it would take a LONG time (~400GB). Well, it took about 3 days to complete (which seems suspiciously slow...), but anyway, it finished sometime in the middle of the night. In the morning I looked at the Time Capsule and sure enough, there was the big-*** "sparse bundle" backup. Time Machine seemed to be in the middle of doing a relatively small backup, about 140MB, which I figured were the changes since I began the initial backup a few days before. However, I wished to unplug the ethernet and let it continue wirelessly, so I did so. However, Time Machine seemed to just hang there with the backup no longer progressing. Since I could simply have it redo the backup a little later without any real data loss, I just stopped the backup mid-progress. I unplugged the ethernet cable and the world seemed well. Then I clicked in Time Machine to begin a new backup.
Of course, I expected this backup to be a rather small one, but I realized that Time Machine was about to begin another ~400GB backup! In fact, there was no information in the "Last Backup" field, so apparently Time Machine could not see the massive initial backup and was about to start all over again. Well, I am NOT about to wait another 3 days for it to do that, especially if the problem reoccurs, so I halted the backup and set Time Machine to "off."
Now, what to do? Why can't Time Machine see the initial backup? Why is it trying to do another full backup (very little data changed on my system in the 3 days)? Did my stopping the "hourly" backup somehow "break" things?
    Advice? Thoughts?

I'm not sure how the sparsebundle is identified by the computer, but if it is uniquely identified by the network connection used (ethernet, airport, firewire networking, etc.) then it could very well not identify the previous sparsebundle you made via Ethernet as being the one for your computer via Airport. I dont remember this being the case for me when I had my PowerBook backing up to my PowerMac via both Airport and/or Firewire networking, but I could be wrong...it was a while ago. Even though you seem to want to lean away from this, I'd recommend remaking it and just letting it go. You can use your computer in the mean time and allow the process to run in the background. It will pause and resume as the backup disk is available until the process is complete.

Try this from MacFixIt as well:
In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    * Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    * Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.
