Initial backup with TM fails partway

Hi, and thanks for the help. I have actually searched and read, and am still puzzling on this.
I have a WD MyBook 500GB drive connected via USB to my new iMac. This drive has been functioning on my PC, but I have reconfig'ed it to a single partion (GPT) and formatted it with Mac OS Ext (Journaled). I even zeroed it and erased it. However, no matter what, my TM backup fails at about the same point.
I looked in Console at the "backupd" messages, found an Error 36 when I finally killed the hung process pointing to a particular iTunes TV show. I excluded that directory from TM, and restarted the backup. TM ran for another 30-40MB and hung again (on a different TV show.)
I've used First Aide in Disk Utility to both verify and repair the disk, and found no problems. It sounds like the drive to me, and since it is generally the same amount of time and volume (2 hours, 125GB all 3 attempts) perhaps a physical issue? It did work on the PC.
What do I use on the Mac to proceed from here? Thanks again.

I've gone back to the console to be a bit more rigorous in my dissection of this problem. It seemed to me that limiting the messages merely to "backupd" might be obscuring the problem, so I removed that filter, and just walked through the relevant times. It brought out a lot of other interesting data.
The gist is that after the 909 message (error?) the backup progresses for 2-1/2 hours and then begins to get bus times out. After that I begin getting disk I/O errors, and other errors related to writing out of the journal. Eventually, about 7PM I killed the disk and the process, which took quite a while, and finally generated the Error 36 which I no longer think was a precipitating event.
Does this make a solution any clearer to folks with experience? Thanks!

  • Initial Backup with Time Machine Stalls

I bought a brand new high end external hard drive so that I could use time machine. When I first hooked it, it went through the usual problems, so I came to the forum and reformatted and partitioned my hard drive according to those threads. I tried to do a new initial backup and the backup stalled at 12.87gb of 46gb total. I tried to use the disk repair utility to repair any problems on my original hard drive and it reported nothing wrong. All night, though, time machine would try to make that initial backup and stall at the exact same point.
    Thoughts?

This was happening to me too. It would get to a certain point and just stall there forever until I manually quit the process using the Activity Monitor. For me, it turned out to be that a certain set of files on my drive had their group set to "nogroup" (these were files generated by an Apache process with MAMP Pro if that makes any difference) and this was causing the backup to fail.
Basically, what I'd do is try to narrow down where the backup is failing by adding folder to the Exclude list until you get a successful backup, then open up the last folder that it failed with, and start excluding folders in there until you get another successful backup, etc. Basically you're just trying to find the set of files that is causing Time Machine to choke. This is how I ended up finally finding these files with bad owner attributes. Correct the file's attributes and you should be able to do a successful backup. The actual problem in my case was due to the use of MAMP Pro. If that means anything to you, I posted more info here:
    http://mirthlab.com/2008/04/05/mamp-might-break-your-time-machine-backups/
    Hope that helps.
P.s. Repair permissions is useless in this case.

  • Initial Backup with TC - Does Ethernet Cable Matter?

Does the speed of backup affected by the type of Ethernet cable you use? Cat 5 or Cat 6? I was under the impression that Cat 6 is for Gigabit Ethernet (which TC supports). If I use Cat 5, and I bottlenecking my transfer speeds?

Well, like I said, this is an initial backup, so there is about 500GB of data currently being transferred. You say it will be slowed down "a little", but if Im using Cat 5, does the TC drop down to 100 Base-T? Or just use a slower method of 1000 Base-T?
Im about 30GB done out of 586GB total. Im wondering if I restart and swap to a Cat 6, will it still be worth it.

  • Problem initializing ConnectionPool with Login Failed

Hi, we are using weblogic 8.1 on solaris with sybase 12.5, Our application initialize

SQLWarnings chained to this exception for the reason(s)." We are pretty sure the
user id and password is correct, they are all the same as other databases which
we don't have problem. The setting is pretty much the same other than hostName,
port and database name. we even set initialCapacity to 1, it still failed? What
could be the reeason? and how can make weblogic spit out the Syabse specific SQLWarning
which could give us some clue?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,

It turns out there are something in the "Properties" attrib that this Sybase server
didn't like. After we took out most of the them, (only leave the user, sqlinitstr,
applicationname) , then it starts to work.
    Thanks,

show with those connection properties? Unfortunately, that error message
    from the
Sybase driver is a bit silly if it says to check the SQLWarning, because
    the
only access to SQLWarnings in JDBC is via the Connection.getWarnings()
    call,
which we wouldn't need to call if the driver returned us a connection
    to make
    the call ;)...

  • Initiating BPEL with BPELConsole fails

I want to start an async workflow with the BPELConsole. After initiating the process, the gui shows a unique identifier for the async workflow but there is no instance in the instance list.
I cannot use the html form, because the input is more than the allowed maximum of 70 lines. But the xml form works (sometimes).
    Is this a known bug?
Is this behaviour due to the use of multiple transformations?

May this thread will help you:

Has to do that the process is async.

  • After initial backup with ethernet cable, how to switch to wireless backups

Initial full backup from MBP to TC via ethernet using TM worked (took 7hrs to do 150GB).
Now, how do I tell TM to do the incremental backups wirelessly?
My TC is connected to my DSL modem and working wirelessly for that, but when I try to click on TM in menu bar and say "back up now" it asks for my user name and password but says "invalid" when I put in my laptop's admin user and PW.
    ACK--now what?
    thanks!

    DuQuoi,,
You may have realized it later but... It was not your own Username and Password it was asking for but the name of your Time Capsule and its' password that it needed to resume backups wirelessly. I know...the dialog box says 'your username and password', but it is incorrect.
Glad it's working for you now.

  • [500gb Time Capsule] Initial Backup ALWAYS Fails

I picked up a 500gb Time Capsule the other day to be used as my main router in my house and to be my new source for my Time Machine files.
I began to do the Initial Backup to the 500gb Time Capsule, BUT EVERYTIME I run the Initial Backup it will fail and say "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. A network problem may have interrupted the connection between your computer and the backup volume.".
And here's the weird part; I also loose all connectivity to the Time Capsule as well. I loose internet, I loose the ability to access the network and when I run the Airport Utility it can't even see the Time Capsule until i restart both my Macbook and Time Capsule. The connection is still there though cause the green light where my network cable is plugged in on the Time Capsule is still lit up.
I have tried to reset the Time Capsule multiple times, format the Time Capsule HD (multiple times and even wrote all zeroes to the drive), ran the backup over wifi and a wired connection and still nothing works.
    Help please!

  • Initial Backup Failure

    Hello all-
I'm trying an initial backup with Time Machine on Leopard using a 320GB WD drive. According to my Time Machine Buddy widget, "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD." That's the first negative-sounding message. A few MBs in, it always fails, usually with Error:11.
Thanks in advance for any advice or helpful solutions.

    No, Macintosh HD is "Journaled."
Then your backups don't need to be case-sensitive. See the pink box in #5 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

    Something else in +*/Library/Application Support.+*
I take it "MakeMusic" is a 3rd-party app? Does it work properly? If not, exclude +*/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic+* and try again.
If it does work properly, as an experiment, try just dragging that folder to your TM disk (but not inside the Backups.backupdb folder that contains your backups). See if that produces an error, too. You can delete it when done.
I hate to say it, but it seems you've either got a bad external drive, or problems in OSX. I don't know how much luck you might have with WD, but you might want to see if they can diagnose it, or have any suggestions.
The only other suggestion I have would be to download and install the "combo" update. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
Don't delete the download file -- if that doesn't help, you may need it again.

  • Kernel panic during Time Machine initial backup

    Hi all!
I've got the Airport Extreme 2009 and external WD My Passport 320GB attached to it via USB and shared to the LAN. While initial backup with Time Machine via WiFi my MacBook Pro gets kernel panic.
My Passport has been formatted as Extended Journaled Case-sensitive file system.
Did anybody stumble upon such problem?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You need to know that backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Kernel panics are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, run the Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
And perhaps a heavy-duty memory test, such as the free Rember: http://www.kelleycomputing.com/

  • Can I restore an earlier iCloud backup with only one visible?

I had to restore my iPhone 3GS because attempting to transfer purchases from it somehow made it unreadable by any program. When I tried to Restore it, the Restore failed, and the phone told me to try Restoring again. However, while it was deciding that it had failed to Restore itself, the defective phone backed itself up over my saved iCloud backup (it backed up again before I shut off auto-backup, because for some reason, I couldn't access Settings until it finished mis-installing the Apps in queu).
I couldn't back the phone up on my new computer since the transfer never completed and iTunes crashed due to that failure. All the data that had been successfully transferred from my phone to my computer before the Transfer failed was gone when I got iTunes up again. Now I only have an iCloud backup with the failed Restore, missing a lot of my products, data, and functionality. How do I restore the original backup that wasn't screwed up?

I didn't have a Choose Backup option. In fact, when I attempted to Restore following this suggestion, my phone just immediately started the Restore process (from my computer, which had no backup saved to it, and it gave and continues to give no option to permit Restoration from iCloud) and ended up removing all data, apps, and accounts on my phone.
    Now I have nothing.
My single iCloud backup appears to still exist, but it's useless because I can't do anything with it except delete it...and it's from after my phone crashed anyway, so it's not fully functional. But it would be better than what I have now, if I could actually get to it.

+My problem is that Time Machine will not complete the initial backup.+ When I set it to backup from my MacBook Pro running 10.5.5 (just upgraded from Tiger a week ago, woo-hoo!) to my FireWire 500GB WD drive, the backup starts correctly. All is fine until it gets to a certain point, typically in the 6-10 GB area of backing up (that is, after backing up about 6-10 GB of data). At that point, an error message pops up, saying the backup could not be completed. If I tell it to do it again, it might back up an additional 4 or 5 GB, but then it stops again, and after that it only gets about 100 MB of additional data backed up before it just stops.
I have 80 GB of data on my internal drive, and hundreds of gigs free on the external drive, so space is not an issue. When I first encountered this problem, I did some research and found an article on this website by Apple to reformat the external drive. I did so, but it seems to have made no difference. I also later found some advice to, after a failed backup, drag the incomplete backup file from the TM disk to the trash and then start the backup over again, but that did not work either.
Does anyone know why this will not work for me? I can't even get passed the initial backup, and for me that is a little concerning.

    UPDATE:
I have been playing around (frustratedly) and I do not think the problem lies in the external hard-drive, but in the internal one. The reason why TM won't back up seems to be because of the files on my computer. I look through the console to find out what files TM stumbled over, and I've begun excluding them as they come up. First it was the system folders, then it was my Aperture library, and now it's my iPhoto library. More specifically, there are data files for specific photos in my iPhoto library that seem to be corrupt. The console tells me that TM stumbled on them, and when I locate the corrupt files in the Finder to delete them, Finder crashes before I can do so.
I'm becoming very irritated with Time Machine and my computer. Please help me get this to "just work", I know it's probably something I did accidentally that's causing this but I don't know what or how to remedy it.

  • HT3728 Can't get my initial backup to work with Time Capsule...get the following error: An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)

I linked up my Time Capsule yesterday and my initial backup failed twice. I then hooked up the Time Capsule to my iMac with an ethernet cable and now it won't work at all....can anyone help us out? Getting frustrated with this "easy" stuff!!
    Thanks.

Let me guess.. you are using Lion.
Redo the setup but download and install 5.6 utility if indeed Lion is involved.

Use SMB names for wireless and TC.. this helps..
    Short, no spaces pure alphanumeric..
Set and lock the wireless channels.

  • Time Machine backups fail after initial backup in Yosemite

After upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite, I was able to run one backup to my trusty USB drive.  Subsequent backups all start with "Preparing backup", and will write roughly 900KB to disk (or so it says) and then fails.  I created a Time Machine-compatible network drive on my Drobo 5n, and again, the initial backup is successful, and subsequent ones fail.  This is concerning and infuriating.  I'm hoping someone out there has encountered this problem as well.
Please note: this is regarding backups only.  I see a handful of discussions about not being able to perform restores in Yosemite, but that is not my issue.

    Same here.
    From Time Machine Buddy app:
    Starting manual backup
Total content size: 424.3 GB excluded items size: 21.01 GB for volume Macintosh HD
Found 2439814 files (403.3 GB) needing backup
424.87 GB required (including padding), 250.63 GB available
Deleted backup /Volumes/Backupmac/Backups.backupdb/.df. (3)/2014-10-23-120445.inProgress/F8CFC567-7E6E-49B0-B366-88DF31DAF49B containing 4 KB; 250.63 GB now available, 424.87 GB required
Removed 1 expired backups so far, more space is needed - deleting oldest backups to make room
Deleted 1 backups containing 4 KB total; 250.63 GB now available, 424.87 GB required
Backup date range was shortened: oldest backup is now Oct 23, 2014
Backup failed with error 7: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
It wants to do a full backup. Fine... so why doesn't it just delete more of the old backups to do so? I don't want to wipe the backup drive and start over now, but that seems like the only way to go.

  • Time Machine has failed twice- freezes halfway into initial backup

In my first attempt, the backup "froze" half way. the progress bar would not move after several hours so I stopped the backup.
In the second attempt, I let it run as long as possible eventually failing with the message
" Unable to complete backup. An Error occurred while creating the backup directory"
I am backing up to a new GTech drive that has functioned perfectly so I don't think it is a HW problem.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas?

I have fixed my problem and have a succesfull initial backup!
    1. deleted time machine Prefs file.
    2. set SLEEP to NEVER in Energy Saver.
    3. unchecked "put hard disk to sleep when possible" in Energy Saver.
    4. dismount/remount backup drive.
    5. start backup.
    6. Success !
