Initial Backups Failing

I've tried to research the answer to this problem, but have found only advice for people who have had Time Machine work correctly for them before, and suddenly stop backing up correctly after a while.
+My problem is that Time Machine will not complete the initial backup.+ When I set it to backup from my MacBook Pro running 10.5.5 (just upgraded from Tiger a week ago, woo-hoo!) to my FireWire 500GB WD drive, the backup starts correctly. All is fine until it gets to a certain point, typically in the 6-10 GB area of backing up (that is, after backing up about 6-10 GB of data). At that point, an error message pops up, saying the backup could not be completed. If I tell it to do it again, it might back up an additional 4 or 5 GB, but then it stops again, and after that it only gets about 100 MB of additional data backed up before it just stops.
I have 80 GB of data on my internal drive, and hundreds of gigs free on the external drive, so space is not an issue. When I first encountered this problem, I did some research and found an article on this website by Apple to reformat the external drive. I did so, but it seems to have made no difference. I also later found some advice to, after a failed backup, drag the incomplete backup file from the TM disk to the trash and then start the backup over again, but that did not work either.
Does anyone know why this will not work for me? I can't even get passed the initial backup, and for me that is a little concerning.

UPDATE:
I have been playing around (frustratedly) and I do not think the problem lies in the external hard-drive, but in the internal one. The reason why TM won't back up seems to be because of the files on my computer. I look through the console to find out what files TM stumbled over, and I've begun excluding them as they come up. First it was the system folders, then it was my Aperture library, and now it's my iPhoto library. More specifically, there are data files for specific photos in my iPhoto library that seem to be corrupt. The console tells me that TM stumbled on them, and when I locate the corrupt files in the Finder to delete them, Finder crashes before I can do so.
I'm becoming very irritated with Time Machine and my computer. Please help me get this to "just work", I know it's probably something I did accidentally that's causing this but I don't know what or how to remedy it.

  • Time Machine initial backup fails OS 10.5 with no reason but 'bus error'

I ran into an error on the last system update and had to go back to Leopard 10.5 just to see my stuff. I managed to move my home directory into the newly installed system and all my files are intact. Now I'm trying to get a Time Machine backup before I proceed (my initial mistake was not keeping up with them in the first place).
I had some trouble early on and at one point decided to reformat the external drive (a Fantom Drives GreenDrive, usb, 500Gb). I formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as recommended, no partitions, and then tried my first initial Time Machine backup.
It predictably spent a long time 'preparing...' and I followed along in the system log. Eventually, the copying began but early on (within the first 45 min) the backup failed with almost no indications in the log as to why. I've pasted the system log below.
One thought I had was that it was weird that there was an automatic request for backup at 12:36:54. I also included the CrashReport, but I can't make any sense out of it.
    any ideas?

I should have added that I've been through about half a dozen sites (including sanctioned apple sites) and their recommendations for getting Time Machine to work properly. I did format the drive once (with extended journaled format and GUID partition scheme, but I didn't zero it out. I'm trying that now and I'll try TM again in about 4 hours.
This morning I tried turning Time Machine's automatic backups off (moved the slider to off in the preferences pane) and manually started a backup (right-clicking the TM icon in the dock and selecting "Backup Now"). It ran further along than before, but stopped again. This time, it gave an error, and I've pasted the log below. I looked but didn't find much helpful on "error 11."

  • DB13 initiated backups fail -  BRTOOLS succeeds

    Dear All,
I have configured init<SID>.sap for a online disk backup. When I start a online backup from BRTOOLS it completes. But when I schedule or immediately start a Online backup from DB13, it fails with this log:
    01.09.2008     12:09:47     BR0282E Directory '

01.09.2008     12:09:47     External program terminated with exit code 3
I am using a separate Windows server shared directory to take this backup [
    bisandbox01\Solmanbackup\sapbackup]
Can anyone suggest what am I missing?
    regards, Sean.

    Hi,
Give FULL control rights to SAPSERVICE(SID) to your "
    bisandbox01\Solmanbackup\sapbackup "  .
If the sapbackup location is on another server then you have to create the user sapservice<SID> on that server & make sure that the password is same as of sap server.
When you execute the backup through DB13 the user SAPSERVICE(SID) is been use to store the backup.
Hope this will help to solve your problem..
    regards
    Virendra

  • Initial Backup: Failed; Drive: All Good

I have been having a lot of problems with my time machine and this new hard drive that I bought specifically for this purpose. In summation, after following all advice on this site, I reformatted my hard drive and all that and it Time Machine still gets a little past 10gb and then stalls and eventually tells me that it is failed. I know for a fact that the drive is all good and formatted right and everything else because I have used this same drive with Time Machine on another mac I have.
I think that the Time Machine software is screwy. No matter how many files I exclude from the backup, it always tells me that it has to back up the same number of files and the same amount of memory. Is there a way to reinstall Time Machine or debug it or something? Is it corrupted or something? Is one of the files on my computer gumming up the works (I have tried excluding every folder on my computer except for one, and no matter which that one is, it always stalls near the same point)?

Just a word of caution. You will not be able to use the One Key Recovery to restore your S10 to its original factory state if you ever need to do it once you HD is replaced. Since most people who upgraded the HD do not want to do it, so it is OK. In any case, you still have the original HD if you need to do the original restoration. I think upgrading the HD will not void the warranty since this is classified as a customer replaceable unit but it is best to check with Lenovo if this is a concern. (Well, you can always put back the original HD, right? ))

  • HT3728 Can't get my initial backup to work with Time Capsule...get the following error: An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)

I linked up my Time Capsule yesterday and my initial backup failed twice. I then hooked up the Time Capsule to my iMac with an ethernet cable and now it won't work at all....can anyone help us out? Getting frustrated with this "easy" stuff!!

Let me guess.. you are using Lion.
Redo the setup but download and install 5.6 utility if indeed Lion is involved.

Use SMB names for wireless and TC.. this helps..

  • [500gb Time Capsule] Initial Backup ALWAYS Fails

I picked up a 500gb Time Capsule the other day to be used as my main router in my house and to be my new source for my Time Machine files.
I began to do the Initial Backup to the 500gb Time Capsule, BUT EVERYTIME I run the Initial Backup it will fail and say "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. A network problem may have interrupted the connection between your computer and the backup volume.".
And here's the weird part; I also loose all connectivity to the Time Capsule as well. I loose internet, I loose the ability to access the network and when I run the Airport Utility it can't even see the Time Capsule until i restart both my Macbook and Time Capsule. The connection is still there though cause the green light where my network cable is plugged in on the Time Capsule is still lit up.
I have tried to reset the Time Capsule multiple times, format the Time Capsule HD (multiple times and even wrote all zeroes to the drive), ran the backup over wifi and a wired connection and still nothing works.
    Help please!

  • Time Machine backups fail after initial backup in Yosemite

After upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite, I was able to run one backup to my trusty USB drive.  Subsequent backups all start with "Preparing backup", and will write roughly 900KB to disk (or so it says) and then fails.  I created a Time Machine-compatible network drive on my Drobo 5n, and again, the initial backup is successful, and subsequent ones fail.  This is concerning and infuriating.  I'm hoping someone out there has encountered this problem as well.
Please note: this is regarding backups only.  I see a handful of discussions about not being able to perform restores in Yosemite, but that is not my issue.

    Same here.
    From Time Machine Buddy app:
    Starting manual backup
Total content size: 424.3 GB excluded items size: 21.01 GB for volume Macintosh HD
Found 2439814 files (403.3 GB) needing backup
424.87 GB required (including padding), 250.63 GB available
Deleted backup /Volumes/Backupmac/Backups.backupdb/.df. (3)/2014-10-23-120445.inProgress/F8CFC567-7E6E-49B0-B366-88DF31DAF49B containing 4 KB; 250.63 GB now available, 424.87 GB required
Removed 1 expired backups so far, more space is needed - deleting oldest backups to make room
Deleted 1 backups containing 4 KB total; 250.63 GB now available, 424.87 GB required
Backup date range was shortened: oldest backup is now Oct 23, 2014
Backup failed with error 7: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
It wants to do a full backup. Fine... so why doesn't it just delete more of the old backups to do so? I don't want to wipe the backup drive and start over now, but that seems like the only way to go.

  • Error message on iphone 3GS when initiating back-up for the first time "icloud backup failed - how to fix

When initiating back-up of my 3GS to icloud for the first time, I repeatedly receive an error message reading:
    "iCloud backup failed
There was a problem enabling iCloud backup"
I cannot find a solution to this problem amd no amount of checking and rechecking account settings etc. has made any difference. Does anyone have experience of how to overcome this issue. The iCloud back-up initiated on my iPad without any problem so I do not think the problem is account related.
    Thanks.

    Same problem here...
I just upgraded my 3GS to iOS5 and signed into iCloud using my Apple ID...
Every time I click "Back Up Now" in the iCloud preferences on the iPhone, I get "There was a problem completing the backup.  Please try again later."
On my wife's iPhone 4, I just performed a back up and there were no errors.  I tried this also on my wife's iPad 2 and it worked perfectly.
    I have tried the following:
    1. In iTunes, when my phone is connected, I selected "Back up to iCloud" on the summary tab
    2. Reset my phone using the steps in the above post
    3. Deleted the iCloud account on my iPhone and logged in again
    4. Tried to backup from 3 different wireless networks
None of the steps above fixed the issue which has been going on all day for me...
Any other help would be great - thanks!

  • Time Machine has failed twice- freezes halfway into initial backup

I am backing up to a new GTech drive that has functioned perfectly so I don't think it is a HW problem.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas?

I have fixed my problem and have a succesfull initial backup!

  • Initial TM backup failed

I just got my Time Capsule and installed it this morning, all went very well.
I configured Time Machine and all was going great but I inadvertently caused the initial backup to fail when I reset the TC trying to configure a USB drive.
What will happen? Will the next scheduled backup pickup where the first one left off or will it do a new full backup or am I in trouble?
    Pat

    Thin Weasel,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In addition to "Glasses" comments, consider the following:
    *Interrupting A Time Machine Backup*
Just make sure your computer shuts down first, and then cut the power to the Time Machine drive. If the Time Machine disk shuts off during a backup it could cause problems later.
This KB article discusses backup interruptions related to the Time Capsule, but the information can apply to other Time Machine hard disks as well:
Generally, Time Machine is smart enough to pickup where it left off when a backup is interrupted. It deals with the procedure of a normal shutdown or sleep with elegance. But if the backup process is interrupted by a system crash or some form of power interruption, then anomalies are introduced requiring TM to perform a "deep traversal". Since the average incremental backup only requires about 2-4 minutes, it shouldn't be that much of an inconvenience to just wait for the process to finish.
Unfortunately, if the initial full backup is interrupted by a power failure or such, then, to avoid issues later, it’s best to erase the drive and begin the full backup again.
As for "stopping" a backup, either using the TM menu or clicking the little "x" icon in the TM preference pane will work and should not be considered a dangerous interruption.
    Hope this info is helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Initial backup with TM fails partway

Hi, and thanks for the help. I have actually searched and read, and am still puzzling on this.
I have a WD MyBook 500GB drive connected via USB to my new iMac. This drive has been functioning on my PC, but I have reconfig'ed it to a single partion (GPT) and formatted it with Mac OS Ext (Journaled). I even zeroed it and erased it. However, no matter what, my TM backup fails at about the same point.
I looked in Console at the "backupd" messages, found an Error 36 when I finally killed the hung process pointing to a particular iTunes TV show. I excluded that directory from TM, and restarted the backup. TM ran for another 30-40MB and hung again (on a different TV show.)
I've used First Aide in Disk Utility to both verify and repair the disk, and found no problems. It sounds like the drive to me, and since it is generally the same amount of time and volume (2 hours, 125GB all 3 attempts) perhaps a physical issue? It did work on the PC.
What do I use on the Mac to proceed from here? Thanks again.

I've gone back to the console to be a bit more rigorous in my dissection of this problem. It seemed to me that limiting the messages merely to "backupd" might be obscuring the problem, so I removed that filter, and just walked through the relevant times. It brought out a lot of other interesting data.
The gist is that after the 909 message (error?) the backup progresses for 2-1/2 hours and then begins to get bus times out. After that I begin getting disk I/O errors, and other errors related to writing out of the journal. Eventually, about 7PM I killed the disk and the process, which took quite a while, and finally generated the Error 36 which I no longer think was a precipitating event.
Does this make a solution any clearer to folks with experience? Thanks!

  • ACS 5.3.0.40 On-demand Full Backup failed.

    Hi,
I have ACS 5.3.0.40 Primary Secondary Authenticators , of which the Scheduled backup has stopped.
    When checked the :
    Monitoring Configuration >
    System Operations >
    Data Management >
    Removal and Backup
    > Incremental Backup , it had changed to OFF mode. without any reason.
The same was observed earlier too.
    I have made the
Incremental Backup to ON and intiated the
View Full Database Backup Now. But it wasn't successful and reported an Error:
FullBackupOnDemand-Job Incremental Backup Utility System Fri Dec 28 11:56:57 IST 2012 Incremental Backup Failed: CARS_APP_BACKUP_FAILED : -404 : Application backup error Failed
Later i did the acs stop/start  "view-jobmanager" and  initiated the On-demand Full Backup , but no luck, same error reported this time too.
Has any one faced similar type of error /problem reported , please let me know the solution.
    Thanks & Regards.

One other thing; if this does end up being an issue with disk space it is worth considering patch 5.3.0.40.6 or later since improves database management processes
This cumulative patch includes fixes/enhancements related to disk management to avoid following issue
CSCtz24314: ACS 5.x *still* runs out of disk space
    and also fix for
CSCua51804: View backup fails   even when there is space in disk
Following is taken from the readme for this patch
The Monitoring and Reporting database can increase when as records are collected. There are two mechanisms to reduce this size and prevent it from exceeding the maximum limit.
    1. Purge: In this mechanism the data will be purged based on the configured data retention period or upon reaching the upper limit of the database.
    2. Compress: This mechanism frees up unused space in the database without deleting any records.
Previously the compress option could only be run manually. In ACS 5.3 Patch 6 there are enhancements so it will run daily at a predefined time, automatically when specific criteria are met. Similarly by default purge job runs every day at 4 AM. In Patch 6 new option provided to do on demand purge as well.
The new solution is to perform the Monitoring and Reporting database compress automatically.
    2.       New GUI option is provided to enable the Monitoring and Reporting database compress to run on every day at 5 AM. This can be configured under GUI Monitoring And Configuration -> System Operations -> Data Management -> Removal and Backup
    3.       Changed the upper and lower limit of purging of Monitoring and Reporting data. This is to make sure at lower limit itself ACS has enough space to take the backup. The maximum size allocated for monitoring and reporting database is 42% of /opt( 139 GB). The lower Limit at which ACS purges the data by taking the backup is 60% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (83.42 GB). The upper limit at which ACS purges the data without taking backup is 80% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (111.22 GB).
    4. The acsview-database compress operation stops all services till 5.3 patch 5 , now only Monitoring and Reporting related services are stopped during this operation.
    5. Provided “On demand purge” option in Monitoring and Reporting GUI. This option will not try to take any backup, it will purge the data based on window size configured.
    6. Even if the “Enable ACS View Database compress” option is not enabled in GUI then also automatic view database compress will be triggered if the physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database reached to the upper limit of its size.
    7. This automatic database compress takes place only when the “LogRecovery” feature is enabled, this is to make sure that the logging which happens during this operation will be recovered once this operation is completed. ACS generates alert when there is a need to do automatic database compress and also to enable this feature.
    8. Before enabling “LogRecovery” feature configure the Logging Categories in such way that only mandatory data to log into Local Log Target and Remote Log Target as Log collector under System Administration > ... > Configuration > Log Configuration
This “LogRecovery” feature can recover the logs only if the logs are present under local log target.
9       This automatic database compress operation also performed only when the difference between actual and physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database size is > 50GB.
10 The new CLI “acsview” with option “show-dbsize” is provided to show the actual and physical size of the Monitoring and Reporting database. This is available in “acs-config” mode.
acsview     show-dbsize     Show the actual and physical size of View DB and transaction log file

  • Time Machine "cleaning up" in the middle of my initial backup

I am trying to backup using time machine to a brand new external firewire drive that I've just formatted. The initial backup is about 150GB and about 20GB of the way into the backup time machine stops copying and the status window says "cleaning up" and then things seem to hang indefinitely. I've already tried deleting time machine preferences, what's going on here and how can I fix?
Message was edited by: Jensen Gelfond

Well deleting stuff won't help in the middle of a backup. Cancel the backup and re-prep the backup drive as follows:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Reconfigure TM preferences to select the backup drive and configure your backup preferences, then let TM do its work.
Note that before performing a backup you should be sure that the system you are backing up is clean. So I would consider some basic things:
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
Then the error changed to this:
“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.
    Thank you for the link.
