Initial impressions after a week of Leopard

First, having made certain that "unsanity" files (Logitech) were deleted, installation using default option was successful on both machines. Many others have not been so lucky.
Second, and for the most part, I find Leopard a significant improvement over Tiger, although the favorable features tend to be the unheralded. Mail seems to function with greater speed, and I like the ability to create bullet and number lists--as has always been possible using Entourage. Apple fixed the annoying lack of vertical scrolling in pdf documents in Safari; Safari, too, seems a bit more responsive. I also appreciate the quick, automatic mounting of "air disks" and network computers. (I had to downgrade the Airport Extreme firmware, however.) There are other positive aspects too numerous to detail here. Now for the problems, which are several and significant.
The following features do not work or work poorly on my G5:
1. backup to iDisk doesn't work using latest version of Apple's Backup (works fine so far on my MBP);
2. Time Machine--not even close to working (see the many posts on this topic), have yet to try with MBP;
3. numerous kernel-related crashes upon waking from sleep mode--most serious problem, for obvious reasons (no such problem, yet, on MBP);
4. iWeb crashed when attempting to publish (this after I'd resolved previous publishing problems with '08 version);
5. a few font-related problems moving from Tiger to Leopard; and
6. can't complete "repair permissions" using Disk Utility (related, it seems, to Apple Remote Desktop "ARDAgent")--affects both G5 and MBP.
I've sent Apple several reports, in particular on every crash. I suspect that the first update of Leopard will be a doozy--and much needed.

Sorry, you originally posted in the MBP forums.   I had "assumed" your profile was incorrect.  I see now the HOSTS has moved your post to the Lion forums.
Please disregard my previous response.
Sorry, I cannot help you any further.  I've never used Lion OS.  Never cared for it.

  • After a week with Leopard.

The good news for me is that is mostly stable. The bad news is that it has some unreproducible quirks on my machine. To share two with you:
    1. At one point, the keyboard worked for application, but not in the Finder. This meant that I couldn't perform a search or invoke Finder menus using the keyboard. Very strange. A restart solved the problem.
    2. At one point, TM and the Address Book decided to go to war. When I opened the address book and the invoked Time Machine, the dock would not disappear. This mean that I couldn't cancel out of TM because the Dock was in the way. I had to hide the dock in order to cancel out of TM. A restart solved the problem.
Looks like memory is getting a little kerfluffled in Leopard. I tend to keep a lot of programs open, so I'm not sure if it is Leopard or a misbehaving application.
On the bright side, even with some quirks, Spaces for me is fantastic. I can now keep all the apps open that I use during the day without having to play hide the application. Spaces was really done right. Congrats to Apple for that one.
Even with its quirks, Leopard is usable for me. It hasn't actually crashed, caused me a data loss, etc. I'm keeping my Tiger backup around just in case I need to revert, but overall, I'm pretty happy with Leopard. Sounds like some fixes are in the works which should make Leopard even more stable.

    Hi abrody,
I checked the panic log. I was very concerned because I just put new memory in and thought that there was a real possibility of a bad memory chip. On further research, I tend to think not. Here is a dump of the log:

The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
SL may have taken the initiative and quarantined what it determined were borked fonts and put them aside to avoid calamity.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
That said, rumor has it that the next update will correct some spurious font handling....best to wait if housecleaning doesn't help at this time.

  • Wireless network connectivity issues after upgrading to Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.4) I find that my wireless network will not automatically connect to my router (Netgear DG834G) as it used to. First impressions are that the macbook is finding a number of wireless networks but wants to connect to the one that is alphabetically first in the list. It also seems that the signal that the airport is receiving is weak, even when the macbook is next to the router.
Has anyone experienced this when they upgraded?
Any and all help gratefully appreciated
    Nick

but a couple that I used with no problem before I upgraded now give me a "server not found" error after I enter my login and password.
Quit Safari. Open Keychain Access   /Applications/Utilities. Select Passwords on the left.
Delete the keychains for the sites you have problems logging into AND the Safari Forms Autofill keychain. Now from the menu bar click Keychain Access / Keychain First Aid. Select: Verify. If necessary, select: Repair. You will be prompted for your admin password. Click Start.
Relaunch Safari. Navigate to a site. Login with your user name and password. That will create a new keychain for you.
If you still have problems accessing sites, go to Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all cookies or just the one's for the problematic sites. Now try logging into a site again.
Even though you upgraded to v10.6.7 make sure Safari is up to date. From the menu bar click Safari / About Safari. If it's a version prior to 5.0.5, click your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click: Software Update...
And check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. Something there may be preventing you from accessing secure sites. If you have any extensions installed,  turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Imac crashes after 3 weeks!!!!  White screen of death-- Hard Drive died!??

    Good day fellow Apple-minded,
bought my missus a 27" Imac with a 1TB hard drive in the mighty United of States, just the other day.
I have become quite an Apple fan recently........mainly based on the high reliability compared to the products from Bill Gates and his henchmen.
HOWEVER, I was less impressed when the white "screen of death" appeared the other day while trying to boot up. It was night, so I spent a good few hours in this forum, trying to look for a solution.........before finally surrendering to bed.
The next morning to the Mac-doctor and he confirmed--> the Hard Drive--> R.I.P.
    After 3 weeks only!!
Luckily it will be changed under warranty etc, but still--> my question is: how common is this for the Imac?????
FYI: I flew the Imac out of the States, checking it in at the airline desk--> booboo??
    Thanks,
    MXP 150 Patriot

IMO, mere coincidence. Mechanical and electrical things break. When, no one knows. For HDs, normally within the first couple of months and then years later at their end of life. Since it's being replace under warranty, don't worry.

  • Home sharing does not work after update to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9

I am using home sharing since about a year without any problems. After updating to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 it suddenly does not work anymore.
On my iMac and my Mac Book Pro I get error code 3259 and it tells me to check my firewall and to enable Port 3689.
I did not change anything in the firewall settings, itunes on both allows data traffic in both directions. I also do not find any option to activate a port ( also wondering why this is suddenly now necessary)
I deactivated home sharing on both machines and enabled it again. It still does not work.
On both machines iTunes displays the the library on the left side but like said it is not accessable
With Finder I can access the other computer from both machines without any problem.
Any help to solve this would be very much appreciated

first of all, if you are behind a router firewall, and have your network secured (WPA2 and a long, non-dictionary password made up of letters and numbers), you don't need the software firewall on your Mac(s).
@ least turned if off for troubleshooting purposes.
turn home sharing off on both computers, and make sure
    (a) both Macs have access to the internet
    (b) iTunes on both machines is authorized for the same iTunes account.
turn home sharing back on on both Macs.
    does it work ?

  • File Server/AFP gets slow after a week or so

    Hi all,
I manage a file server at our office here, with around 20-30 users, running 10.3.9 server. Users connect via AFP for general office duties, but also remote-desktop into a windows server using Rdesktop via X11. They use SMB to access their files from the windows side.
I find after a week or so that logins to the shares, and general file access gets incredibly slow, and grinds to a halt eventually, but comes good after the server is rebooted.
It is usually quick to authenticate in any case, but takes an age to bring up the list of shares that the users can pick from (probably 10-15 at most depending on their permissions). Even after a fresh reboot it takes about 10 seconds to bring up the list of shares to pick from. Is there any way to fix this?
I find that is someone has their computer set to calculate folder sizes on a server drive/share it can make the server grind to a standstill, but even with everyone set up correctly it still goes slowly all by itself after a few days/weeks of running. Logging in via Remote Desktop becomes slow at this point too.
I've tried some of the tips in this thread below with only limited success.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=343979&tstart=15
    Any help is greatly appreciated

As you upgraded the router's firmware, reset the router for 30 seconds and reconfigure the router from scratch.
On the router setup page,Under the Wireless tab, click on the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75, Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 and Click on Save Settings...

  • I can't find iPhoto after upgrading to Snow Leopard...

Usually, there is an icon when I open photobooth but its not there. Then I tried looking in finder to see if I even had it and I don't. Snow Leopard should come with iPhoto right??

I have the same issue. iPhoto just disappeared after I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I have the install CDs for Leopard, but it doesn't look like I can install iPhoto separately. Under the "Optional Installs" directory there's an option to "Install Bundled Software Only" at 2.7 GB. Won't this overwrite the Snow Leopard versions and cause trouble? I suppose I could do a clean install of Leopard, and then install Snow Leopard, but I'm afraid after waiting on this I might just lose iPhoto again. I'll probably try it anyway. The second CD seems to only have X.

If you are having an issue with
As someone who uses my iPhone almost constantly I can certainly understand how you would be upset to have it not be able to even turn on. Let's see if we can get you back up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

After updating to snow leopard and trying to delete mackeeper, Flash player is being blocked and will not allow me to view utubes. Can anyone help?

Here are instructions for eradicating MacKeeper - you may need to re-install it to uninstall it fully:
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
Regarding Flash - there are many reports on here that v13.x isn't working for a lot of people. distractme in the following thread posted instructions on how to install the previous version, which should work whilst Adobe work on a fix:

  • Podcast not showing up in itunes search after 1 week

i submitted my podcast with one episode and it was accepted on 17 july. i am able to get to it in the itunes store by using the url as provided in the email.
    iTunes Store Welcome
    Dear Podcast Owner
Your podcast, located at [ http://feeds.feedburner.com/meterdown ], has been approved. You should expect to see it in iTunes within the next few hours. When it's available, you will be able to access it with the URL below.
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=260194221
i have put an icon with that url in my blog (meterdown.wordpress.com) and that works fine. people are taken to the podcast in the itunes store and can subscribe.
however when i search the store, my podcast is not turning up either by podcast name (meter down) or by author/artist name (kabi) or by keyword (taxi, bombay, hindi).
I can ping using the podcast ID (id=nnn) and it returns the podcast feed url (http://feeds.feedburner.com/meterdown) and the podcast ID.
it doesn't list an episode however. is it supposed to?
my main question is "why am i not showing up in the search?"
is there something wrong in my xml? I host at switchpod and run it thru feedburner and I use the feedburner feed.
i have read and read the forums here, feedburner, podcast alley and also am emailing switchpod support. still can't figure it out.
    thanks

    ssukotto,
Thanks for the information. What you mention is boilerplate that is automatically sent when a new podcast is approved. I also quoted it like scripture before diving deeper into researching this issue.
The research into this problem suggests that there is a minimum number of podcasts in order to be included in the search index (or at least the search results) whether it's undocumented or unintentional.
Case in point, Meter Down posted his first complaint that his podcast hadn't shown up in the search even after a week (far outside the 24-48 hours you mention and that is documented)..that was a week ago. A total of at least two weeks that his podcast could not be found by searching by the exact title. His podcast showed up search within a day after adding his second episode (yesterday).
Jerry Pine posted July 17 that his podcast "Everything Algae" had been approved July 13 but couldn't be found by searching...even by name. July 28th, he added a second episode as a test...and his podcast became searchable.
There are several others who went for days or weeks without being listed in search results by even searching for their exact podcast title...common trait between all of them was that they only had one episode. They added a second episode and within the day they show up in search results.
There are others that had newly submitted podcasts whose podcasts showed up within the 24-48 hours timeframe...but they had at least two episodes.
I'm just providing the facts...could be coincidence that they just happened to be searchable just after posting a second episode.
I'd invite you to read through and share with the iTunes podcast developers the several thread from various people who have reported problems with having a searchable podcasts and draw your own conclusions.
    Erik

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • I have a big problem with Lion and PGP. After upgrading from snow leopard to lion I cannot access my PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start but gives a notion that lion cannot work with my PGP version. Solution?

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,
