Initial iPhone experience....  extremely positive!

I've been reading the forums for several days now, trying to determine whether to "pull the trigger" on the current iPhone or wait until the "version 2.0" to come out. Quite frankly, once I picked it up and ran through three or four of the apps I realized that it was a solid piece of equipment. Luckily the salesman at the Apple Store caught me before I left to let me know that he had received a few in and once they were logged he could sell me one.
I live about an hour away from Reno, and had brought my laptop with me to activate if I was lucky enough to pick one up. Apple employees have consistently proven to be a class act - no issues with my sliding up to the Genius Bar and using my laptop to activate the phone. I was an existing AT&T customer, but with a corporate discount.... Unlike what I'd read about on the forums the activation went smoothly, even so far as to let me know that by activating the iPhone that I was forfeiting any discount I currently received. A grand total of 5 minutes was all it took to setup and sync my iPhone.
So far minimal issues, and typically a resync or reattempt is all it takes to get the phone setup. Extremely happy with the fit, finish, and software suite. EDGE is Reno wasn't too bad, though out where I am it's a little slower, but acceptable.

  • Only AT&T Could Kill the iPhone Experience

Ever since I saw the demonstration of the iPhone, I thought it was going to be the coolest phone the mobile industry has ever seen. In the months that followed, all the information and videos that have trickled out of Cupertino has reinforced this notion. The hype surrounding the iPhone has grown to monumental proportions. The reviews that I've been reading in the newspapers and magazines have relayed that the actual iPhone experience lives up to just about all of the hype.
I've been an AT&T or Cingular customer for just about 10 years now. When I've talked to friends and family about the iPhone, one consistent feeling that I've had is the ONLY thing that will KILL the iPhone experience is AT&T.
For me, that is coming true. I have this beautifully engineered piece of hardware sitting on my desk plugged into the USB port on my Core Duo Macbook Pro. I'm staring at iTunes 7.3 and the "Your activation requires additional time to complete" screen. The same screen that has graced the face of my MacBook Pro since about 8:30PM EST.
After getting this message, I called AT&T. I spoke with a customer service representative who told me that everything with the account was correct. My new iPhone had replaced the Treo 650 I was using previously. The MediaNET data package I had subscribed to was dropped in favor of the iPhone data plan.
I checked my Treo 650 at about 9:30 PM and it was no longer registering on the AT&T network.
At about 11:15PM EST, I decided to give AT&T another call. After my call was dropped by the IVR (I was on a land line), I finally got to speak with a customer service representative who asked me if I would mind holding while I was transferred to another group of individuals who could look deeper into my activation problems. After waiting on hold for thirty minutes, I decided to hang up and go to bed.
Here it is Saturday morning at 10:20AM EST. I've been on the phone with AT&T for 28 minutes - waiting for the "Activation Support Group". I've been told that activation can take up to twenty-four hours to complete. I find this unacceptable. When I relayed this to the CSR, she politely apologized for the inconvenience and tried to comfort me (I guess that was her goal) by saying that a large number of people are in the same boat. I was told that there are "millions" of people trying to activate their phone and it just takes time.

This is soooo ridiculous - you have to laugh otherwise you'll cry. Don't bother buying an iPhone now, wait a week. You can't do anything with it until AT&T catches up on activation.
I posted this in the AT&T apple forum but I'll post here too, just for the record:
Activation with an Old AT&T Wireless (not Cingular)
Yes. I am one of those unfortunate loyal customers too.
I have made 5 calls so far.
Once last night to find out that the department I needed to 'fix' my account is shut for the evening and will re-open tomorrow at 7am.
Second at 8:30a to find out that the 'Conversions' department I needed to 'fix' my account opens at 9a.
Third at 9am to get my old AT&T rate plan changed. Only to find out later on-line that the customer service rep changed it to a $59.99 950 minute non-iPhone plan.
Fourth, to get my rate plan changed to a $59.99 iPhone plan. The lady did not know how to do it and was going to transfer me to the 'Sync' department but dropped the call.
Fifth, call again. Lady took my IMEI and ICCID numbers, set me up with a $59.99 iPhone (at last!). Now I am waiting for the Sync department to reset my device so I can go through activation again.
Apparently its a 12-24 hours wait because AT&T was 'surprised' by the volume of iPhone purchases and I am waiting in-line behind people to be reset by the Sync department from last night.
The iPhone is a beautiful device, its only flaw is AT&T.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

its been like a week that i bought new iphone 5s but whenever i play games or talk in skype for an hour my iphone get extremly hot... idk why?

Why? Because it is working the processors hard. Same as when you work or exercise, your body gets hot, so does the iPhone when it is working. Skype and many games will tax the processors more so than browsing the internet, sending texts or email. So, it gets hot. If it doesn't cool off fairly quickly after you quit Skype or playing your game, or it gets hot when doing less taxing activities, then you might want to have it checked out.

  • My iPhone Experience :)

    The Purchase
Tonight, i walked into the Glendale Galleria (in CA) and purchased an 8gig iPhone. I would have bet my first born that they would have been sold out by 8pm or 10pm.
So i gave them a call and the very nice gentlemen who answered told me they had the 8gigs in stock. He could no elaborate if they had plenty, but he told me to come on down. So i did.
Thankfully, there was no line. The store maybe had 20 people browsing and playing with the phone, etc. Maybe because the mall closes at 9 or 10pm, the people started leaving.
So i walked up to the cashier and requested the phone. We made small talk. I was interested in how many people perhaps had visited the store at 6pm. I was told they had a solid line for 4 hrs of people just buying and leaving.
    wow.
I looked behind the register, they had stacks and stacks of the 4 and 8 gig phone just piled high. That amazed me!
So i paid the nice foxy lady and left the store. In and out in less than 7 minutes.
The packaging is quite impressive. It's a small black box in a black bag. It's high end electronic packaging and printing. VERY NICE.
    Unpackaging/Activating/etc.
So i drove home and i started to unpack the iPhone. I wasn't expecting much at this point. I had been reading the east coasters-NYers nightmare stories of 6 hr activations and cancellations and hangups, etc.
So i plugged in the iPhone and launched iTunes. Prior to starting my day, i had upgraded my OS X and iTunes to the latest iPhone compatible versions. I also inserted a USB 2.0 5-port belkin card in my trusty G4 dual 1gig MDD tower.
Once the computer, itunes recognized the iPhone... i simply went step by step following the onscreen instructions. Mind you i'm ALREADY a AT&T (started with Cingular) subscriber.
So it detected my number, my account as a current subscriber and it gave me the option of packages to sign up for, along with the extra SMS text messaging packages.
I made the selections and soon enough the window told me that it may take up to 3 minutes.
I don't even think 1 minute went by when it told me that the iPhone activation was complete. My jaw dropped.
REALLY? Was that it? So the first thing i did was unplug the iPhone and make a call to make sure my number was carried over to the iPhone. Sure enough it was. I could make and receive calls with not problem. Impressive!
I was so eager to try my fast wi-fi connection at home, which worked like a charm!
Then i was really curious about how fast (slow) the AT&T EDGE network is... and to my surprise, it wasn't bad at all. I don't know how fast the pages were loading, but i wasn't even waiting 1 minute to fully load yahoo.com or cnn.com
The webpages loaded just as if they were on a slow DSL connection. I wasn't disappointed. I expected it to be slower actually.
Perhaps AT&T did pump up the bandwidth for the iPhone launch. Either way, it's usable. I can be out there somewhere in LA and it'll work just fine for me.
Google Maps and the other widgets worked great! Those features alone are worth the price of the phone.
My email synced up perfectly (although i had to set the AT&T outgoing mail server to make my POP3 email work correctly (outgoing mail).
I setup the visual voicemail which works like a charm.
The features of this phone are worth every penny. Sure it's pricey, but this phone is useful in many ways.
The design is gorgeous. The way it feels in your hand... you just want to keep holding it all day long.
Oh and that keyboard... okay... it's going to get some getting used to. Not much though. I'm already learning that if you just let the keyboard do it's thing, you'll type quicker!
Overall, i had a great buying experience. I'm happy with this purchase and the service. I know you east coasters may have poor or non-existent AT&T (Cingular) service. I wonder if it's because of the locations of the cell towers or repeaters and the building blocking/absorbing the signals?
Here in LA, we get great coverage. At least my now retired moto razr v3 phone did great for one year. Tomorrow i'm taking my phone out everywhere to compare signal strengths and EDGE coverage, etc.
Overall an awesome experience. Way to go Apple!

    Most excellent!
Cheers for sharing a positive experience. I had a rather enjoyable one myself.
I live in Tucson, AZ. Got to a local AT&T store around 1:30, and waited for hours under an EZ-UP tent the first person in line brought (he was thanked repeatedly by the growing crowd as the day progressed).
The whole time we were there, there were 3 or 4 AT&T representatives that were extremely accommodating, offering coolers of ice cold water bottles, answering all our questions, and just hanging out and enjoying the experience.
Once the doors opened, my experience was nearly identical to yours in that I was in and out and the clerks were all very nice.
Got home, unpacked everything... once again, your first impressions are shared.
Activated nicely, syncs properly, etc. I've been absolutely satisfied with the whole experience so far.
I can make calls but can't receive them yet (my number was ported from Verizon), I'm anxious, though I have nothing but patience in this department. I completely understand that technology has limitations, and a communications device launch of this magnitude that requires hundreds of thousands of people to use the same network doing the exact same thing at the exact same time, is going to have a few glitches.
When I do receive my first call on the iPhone, I plan to pop a bottle of (juuuust acceptable enough) champagne and toast in the name of Apple, AT&T, and myself.

  • Is there a way to create and edit a video in portrait mode / 9:16 in Premiere Elements 12 or 13. Playback on an iPhone in portrait position.

I'm editing iPhone app video for posting as the first screen in the Apple app store. Required size for the video is 750:1334, 9:16. I there a way to setup the initial video in portrait mode? Many posts for how to rotate a specific clip, but I need the whole video in portrait position. How to accomplish this? I'm using Windows 7 and Premiere Elements 12 and now 13.

    LaurieFrick
Thanks for giving this portrait Edit area monitor shape a look.
I have Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 8.1 64 bit and have done the work using Premiere Elements 12/12.1 on Windows 7 64 bit.
Here is a step by step
Find the DSLR [email protected] file
    Local Disk C\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Settings\SequencePresets\NTSC\DSLR\1080p\
And, in that 1080p Folder is the DSLR 1080p30@ 29.97.sqpreset file that you seek.
    1. Copy the
    DSLR 1080p30@ 29.9.sqpreset fileI
and paste it to the computer desktop in a newly created folder named 1920p.
    2. Open the 1920p Folder and edit the ..sqpreset file in Notepad.
To do that right click the .sqpreset, and, from the pop up, select Open With and then Notepad.
    3. In the Notepad document, you are going to edit in only 2 places for now, switching 1920 and 1080 to 1080 and 1920 at the top and bottom
    sections of the Notepad document.
Then go specifically File Menu/Save of the Notepad document and hit Save.
    4. At this point, you have the edited.sqpreset file in the 1920p Folder on the computer desktop.
(Change the name of the edited .sqpreset file so that it = DSLR [email protected])
Move the 1920p Folder from there to add it to the 1080p Folder, the location where you found the original .sqpreset file that you edited.
    Close out of there.
    5. Back in the Premiere Elements 12/12.1, manually set the project preset to the new project preset
    6. When you import your 1080 x 1920 9:16 video file into the project and drag it into the Timeline, you should see
Note that there is no orange line over that Timeline content, indicating that you are seeing
the best possible preview of the image.
    7. As I wrote before,
But, here is the hang up. If I render the Timeline content to get the best possible preview at the Edit level, the video in the Edit area monitor
squeezes in resulting in black borders to the left and right of the video image on screen.
But, otherwise I found I had no problems editing or exporting, just had to keep away from Timeline rendering for previewing after an edit. Need to find the missing ingredient for 100%.
I will be writing this up in my blog in a more organized fashion including how I got the project preset description in Change Settings to agree with the changes. Probably I will do that in the morning.

  • Iphone 3gs extreme weak wifi signal with wrt160N - suggestions?

    Linksys wrt160N v3.0.00 build 010 Jan 30, 2009
    iphone 3gs firmware v3.1.2
Set up network to include a few laptops with N cards, a PS3 – all ok
When it comes out of sleep mode it connects at full signal strength , then within 15 seconds drops to just the one dot
Under a dLink G router, full signal strength right up to 30 feet outside of the house
Here in condo just purchased the Linksys and standing right next to it i get a practically non existant wifi signal
Go back to parents house with g router , works perfectly.
I thought the N router is set up to be backward compatible and if need be broadcast in G mode for G devices
Is there anything I should be aware of in the settings.
I followed the basic setup - no manual fiddeling with any of the settings.

    gv wrote:
    1. You can check all the settings through the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/
    2. As long as your iPhone maintains a connection and does not really slow down it does not matter how many bars the iPhone shows. I think the iPhone has problems calculating the correct signal strength on 802.11n routers. I have seen something similar on a dlink router. My iPhone jumped from 5 to 1 and back. Most of the time it was at 1 bar. Yet, I had perfect connections and normal internet speed. Thus, check internet functions on your iPhone. Unless you loose connections or they get extremely slow I would simply ignore it.
Problem being is that I'm not sure where to check via the web interface as to what mode it's on right out of the box.
The only way, recalling from last night's attempts, is if I go in and select the manual settings option rather than the wifi protected button, which would then allow me to enter manual settings.
Only there, would I know what it would be set at because I would obviously have to set it. I'd rather not go into changing manual settings unless absolutely necessary at this point.
As for the iphone not displaying the signal strength correctly - I'd have to say it is, given the following download speed test results: 27, 95 , 28, 149 kbps (not the most spectacular) compared to say 9388 kbps when the iPhone initially comes out of sleep and connects to the network. The signal drops to the one dot within about 10-15 seconds approximately.
With the old dLink G router, the signal strength registered full and download speed tests supported that, same as outlined above with the weak signal and corresponding d/l results.

  • HT201412 iPhone 4S extremely hot and turned off. What causes this? is it safe to plug in charger?

My iPhone 4S is extremely hot. It just turned off and wont turn back on. It had 65% battery and now its sahing to plug in to.charge. Im afraid to plig into outlet since its hot. What does this mean?

    Hi Mende,
Thanks for the info. I am though not sure of the service centers here in Delhi (India) as they are really not concerned about the customer and try to make money by telling that things cannot be changed in warranty due to x and y reasons (my friend had similar issues and he was forced to buy a new charger even when things were in warranty). Though thanks for the info.

  • I have a MacBook, iPhone, Airport Extreme and external hdd. What is my best option to stream my music and movies to my hifi set and TV without having to turn on my MacBook?

I would very much like to store all my movies and music on my external HDD, which is connected to an Airport Extreme. Could for example Apple TV access this HDD and stream either music to my hifi system or video to my tv, without having to turn on my MacBook or iTunes? And use my iPhone to control everything?

  • Initial iPhone 5s setup in German?

I just ordered an iPhone 5S from Apple and when I received it, the initial languages was set to German.
I had the option to select either English or German and continue, but it strikes me as weird that German would be the default for a phone ordered in the U.S. and shipped to the U.S.
Maybe I swiped while the screen was showing "Willkommen?" Is this a feature?

Actually it wasn't the language selection, but the "Select Your Country or Region" screen. Germany is first, followed by United States (even after I pick English as language)

  • IPhone experience (PC vs MAC)

Considering the iphone is an apple product, is there an upside to having a mac, where you can add certain things you could not add with your pc, or are both experiences the same?

Hmm...as a longtime Mac user, I will beg to differ. The Mac works a lot faster with the iPhone, and syncs out of the box without any weird workarounds required, especially for those using Vista or things like Exchange Servers on their PC's. Unlike PC's "plug and play" and hardware recognition needs, there isn't such a thing on the Mac. You just plug it in and there it is.
iPhone is maximized to work with iCal and Address Book on the Mac. It works slower (and sometimes causes problems) with Outlook or even Exchange on the Mac for that matter. In general, they work -- but it's much quicker and easier on the Mac with Apple's own built-in applications.'
Similarly, the photo sync is maximized to work with iPhoto on the Mac. The experience of using iPhoto is unlike anything you will get an a PC.
As to iTunes for music and video, they are pretty much the same, except that Mac works much faster when you go to sync, than does the PC version.
There are some caveats, though, even for the Mac. It only works with the most updated software (i.e. the older mac os x doesn't work with it) and the most recent iTunes on both the Mac and the PC. THere are plenty of Mac users that still have older versions of the operating system and don't have Tiger - the minimum requirement. On the PC, older version of Windows also won't work with it.

  • Set up Express just to run iPhones with Extreme running Computers?

For some reason I see no search feature so I appologize if this is common knowledge.
I want to run my Extreme on "n" but our iPhones won't work with that of course. I'd like to take my older Express and set it up just to run the iPhones. I hope I don't have to hard-wire it to the Extreme because I fear it might not reach to where I need it - but I'd like to try.
Would anyone know where I can find instruct on this? I can't find anything so far. Thank you.

Are you using one of the "n only" radio modes on your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) wireless network? If not and using the default "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" your iPhone should have no trouble connecting to it.
On the other hand if you are trying to maintain an all "n" network with your AEBSn, then you basically have two choices with the 802.11b/g AirPort Express Base Station (AX):
    1) As you eluded to, you would connect it directly to the AEBSn via Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the network as a "dual-band" network. In this configuration, the AX would be placed in bridge mode to allow the AEBSn to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for both networks. In addition, you would have two separate wireless networks, one for each type of wireless client, but since the AX is bridged, wireless clients on either network would be able to "see" each other.
    2) Configure both the AEBSn & AX into a Wireless Distribution System. The advantage of this would be that you would connect the AX to the AEBSn wirelessly. The greatest disadvantage of this would be two-fold: 1) You would not be able to run a "n" network as a WDS only works in "g." 2) The overall bandwidth performance will be cut in half.

  • IPhone 4 extremely slow using Safari, network timeout

Checking on this issue for a friend... He says his network times out when trying to retrieve email from Hotmail account, as well as extremely slow loading Facebook, etc. I had him disconnect from the wireless network he is using to see if it's that. If so, any thoughts on why wireless activity would be so slow? I had him check how much space he's used on his iPhone and he tells me he's only used 2.6 GB (his phone is 16 GB).

Is he using  an ATT or VZW iPhone..also, is he using wi-fi or the cellular data network?  If wi-fi I wonder if another non mobile device, say a laptop or something, connected to the same access point, has the same slow issues.  This article has some additional details about troubleshooting wi-fi

  • Almost 3 month old Iphone 4 extremely hot in corner and now wont start

i am currently living in toulouse france as an exchange student, i come from new zealand, which is where my iphone 4 was brought, almost almost 3 months ago. last month for 1 week my phone would become very hot in the corner by the on/off button, so hot i couldnt touch it. the power also drained very fast. the internet connection had no effect as i had no wifi connection with the house i was living in. it ended up that it would go from 100% to 0% in about 2 hours or less, and then wouldnt turn on unless plugged in, but it would always be too hot to use. its been a month since that happened, but its happened again, lasting for the past week and a half. the other day it became the hotest it has ever been, and the power drained extremely fast whilst plugged in, and now it wont turn on

EXACTLY VERY DISAPPOINTED APPLE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A SUPPORTER AND I AM AWARE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY AND MARKETING SKILLS I COULD WRITE A SMALL BOOK ABOUT YOUR CORE BUSINESS SALES AND MARKETING IT' WORKS AND YOU NEVER CHANGE IT BUT THIS TIME IT WENT REALLY WRONG AND INSTEAD OF BEING A ' COOL' 'INNOVATIVE ' APPLE PERSONALLY I REALLY I'M surprised the issues are basically hidden. I paid 850€ for iPhone 5 and what I have is a phone that slipped from my pocket hit the ground on the right angle because its made of nothing I gave it to apple to get it fixed no warranty obviously and without knowing what it will cost they took 240€ in advance from my credit card saying it will be recredited if the cost is lower. Realistically these are not good signals the company is giving and they could at least help us and Apple YOU ARE NOBODY WITHOUT US.......
