Initial Mac Setup

I have just got a new mac for college. In the middle of the initial setup, I had already had a time machine setup, so I chose that option for my time machine drive to get all my information synced up. Now my machine does not recognize my login data and I do have the the right username and password. is there a way for me to get back to the original initial setup?

you can always erase the drive and reinstall the OS. but before you do that try resetting your login password. see this link

Unfortunately several phones for which iSync plug-ins worked under Tiger don't work under Leopard.

Initializing Adobe Setup Setup

i installed dreamweaver it created the dreamweaver cs3 file,
when i check run dreamweaver when it finish it starts something up
saying Initializing Adobe Setup Setup when it finishes nothing
happen dreamweaver doesn't seem to be on my computer(xp)

Like when Setup Assistant fires up and lets you migrate? In general, that would imply having to do a complete reinstall. And I've always been under the impression that when you do that, the reinstall software does not contain all the extra goodies that come with a new from-factory install (such as iLife).
But as Prof. Kappy wants to know, the specifics are very version dependent.

Have you taken a look to the configuration of the Printer? I have a HP 2340 with duplex and to configure it I have to do the following:
On the Preferences Pane, click on Printing and Fax or open the Printer configuration Utility. In any case, click on the printer and choose "Configuration of the printer" (in the Printer utility this is in the pritner menu). Then you will see information of the printer... May be there you have an option to activate the duplex... In may case there is a checkbox.
But may be you have done this...

Office Test Drive: relaunching the initial Entourage setup?

I have been playing about with the Office Test Drive--does anyone know how to run the initial setup that Entourage performs on its first launch, again? I was testing the import of an old database; now that I see it works well I want to trash that database and rerun the initial setup again, but there is no option to do so that I can find.
1. "Import" does not work as it won't allow me to select from the Office Identities or Main Identity or Database folder/files. (I want to do this from a backup of the database and not from a program itself. This worked on the initial setup but does not seem to want to work in the "Import" command.)
2. I cannot seem to trash the old identity; when I drag it to the trash it goes into the trash but the trash will not allow me to empty it as it says the Database is in use.
3. Holding down the option key upon launching Entourage worked once--it went to launch Database Utility but quit unexpectedly, and when I launched Entourage it was wiped clean and gave me the "new import" option, but I wasn't prepared to install the new database at that moment and now launching Entourage again does not give me that option. Also, when I have tried that trick again--holding down the option key during the lauch of Entourage--Database Utility launches correctly now! It does not "wipe clean" the program this time.
Should I delete the Office Test Drive and reinstall a new copy? I found it on Mactopia; I'm just worried that the computer will detect that I'm reinstalling Test Drive and refuse to allow it. (I still have 30 days left of the Test Drive as it stands now.)
Any other suggestions?

It doesn't make sense to me that you would have a
problem like this. I have bought 2 iMacs this year.
One of them was about 7 weeks old when I got it and
my installation of the test drive worked just fine.
Bought a 3 month old e Mac last year and used the
test drive for 30 days while awaiting delivery of my
full version of Office.
It has nothing to do with the date the software was
installed but from the date it was first opened.

yes brand new, from the apple store online at apple.com,, I talked to some guy on the apple help chat thing and he said my machine was manufactured on 10/22/05 I ordered it 11/28/05. Anyway I did trash it lastnight and am going to try and reinstall it it. The tech suggested it then he said he didnt think it would work lol. I also downloaded the program suggested and it works well also.. so either way Im covered now.

Help! CS4 install - Mac - "Setup has encountered and error and cannot continue"

Attempting to install CS4 Design Premium on PowerMac G5 with Mac OS 10.4.11
Install with first DVD and gets about 80% across on the progress bar and it fails with a message "Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue".    Is there an install log created where I could get diagnostic messages to give a hint on what the error is?
Any insight is totally appreciated!

The worst telephone support I have ever experienced!   Pathetic.
The first recommendation posted here in response to my initial inquiry was to contact technical support becaue it is "FREE".   I really suggest that you no longer make recommendations like that.
The first call I was placed on hold 20 minutes after the technician told me "TWO' minutes.   I hung up the telephone because I could only assume I was placed back in the queue.
The second call I had to spell my first name, my last name letter by letter to have the technician read it back to me letter by letter from a script, A=APPLE, B=BOY, B=CAT......   he also placed me on hold.   If had to spell my name, and he spell it back to me, how can I explain an error I am having, steps I have taken and have any reasonable expectation of a solution being translated back to me?   I hung up after being placed on hold a second time.
The third call iced this pathetic excuse for support.    Again, at least six minutes spelling my name. Another four or five minutes spelling the email address.    Repeating the error code three times, slowly word by word.   This call I endured for fourty minutes.   After the third time on hold I admitted I gave it Adobe's recommended course of support and threw in the towel.
Understandable that it costs the company less to have this support done for pennies on the dollar overseas, but what about the cost to the customer who is left dead in the water with no faith in getting any help and wastes time and energy?    I guarantee you could have five hundred people lined up for one technical support job in the united states who would stay awake nites to learn and master the program and be pleasant to talk to and give the customer a sense of value!   As it is now, I feel only less than worthless as a customer trying to support this product.
Can't fix this problem, so going oldschool on it and load a fresh copy of the os.

Initial Load Setup...Potential Big Problem

I think we have a big problem. I have posted a similiar question before, but answers are confusing to me. Let me explain our current situation and please comment.
1. We are loading billing documents, thus using VDITM.
2. We have 2 number ranges for billing documents.
3. On R3 we filled the setup tables with the smaller number of billing documents. Then in BW ran a full load.
4. The second billing document number range was kicked off in R3 and setup tables filled.
5. Now, here is where I think there is a problem. This second and final load from the setup table was setup and ran as a full load on BW. Shouldn't this have been the Delta Init?
Please comment on this:
I believe this second load should be the delta init. Then after this was done schedule the RMBWV313 job in R3 to run, for us, hourly. In BW schedule the daily delta to run at night (for us). Everything is in sync this way.
My concern is the second setup table load from BW was setup as a Full Load. After this load is done can we just schedule RMBWV313 in R/3 to run hourly and then schedule the Daily Delta in BW to run later that night.
Please comment asap...please.

Hi Mike,
You may be okay! You can run the Init Delta InfoPackage in BW without transferring data, and your delta process would then be set up. If you have the means, check your data in R/3 and verify in BW after a couple of days (couple of delta extracts) to make sure your billing totals match.
The setup tables are only good for doing your initial load (or full load).
Your other solution would be to delete the second full load in BW, fill your setup table with the second range again (to get the new billing data), and then run the Init Delta InfoPackage in BW with data transfer, and you should be set to go.
Let us know if you succeed!

Post-Install New Mac Setup

After netinstalling our 10.5 macs, we're seeing the startup screen (registration, new admin accounts, etc), even though we've suppressed this in the base image, and added it again to the System Image Utility Workflow (out of desperation to get this to go away).
Here is what we've executed on the base image (which works fine if we do a local restore, like ASR or block restore):
touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
touch /Library/Receipts/.SetupRegComplete
Since we just threw the image into the netinstall workflow, it was obviously overridden, so we added the scripts to the netinstall workflow as post-install items. It still doesn't work, and properly suppress the registration/accounts setup process.
What could we be missing here?

If we use the image on a mac booted into firewire disk mode (or ASR multicast), and then reboot that mac, it starts up and does not go through the registration routine - which is good.
+How was the source volume created? (Clean install, upgrade from something?)+
We used instaDMG - clean and no upgrade.
+Did you make the image using the Assistant mode (select the volume and build a "NetInstall")? Or use the workflow mode? If workflow... what other actions did you include?+
We selected the volume and chose to do a netinstall in a workflow mode.
We have:
1) Define Image Source
2) Enable Automated Installation (choose volume)
3) Create Image
4) Add Packages and postinstall scripts (script was commands i put in my first post)
The weird thing is that it works fine when we use a restore technology other than netinstall (ASR multicast, Disk Utility block copy, etc).

Questions on Initial MARS setup

I have a question on the ?Topology Discovery? piece in MARS. I will be using SNMP to discover and poll all devices in the network. What I don?t want is the MARS box to scan entire subnets looking for devices. I want to control exactly what MARS is doing with respect to SNMP scanning. I want to import sections of the network via a seed file and then have MARS ?discover? the devices in that seed file without me having to use the GUI to discover each device. My first question is how do I set up the Topology Discovery to only look for devices in my imported seed file?
Second question I have is on periodic polling. There is a section within the GUI where you can set up how often MARS will go and do polling of devices. What I want is to have the Layer 2 devices polled every 5 minutes (for CAM table changes) with other L3 devices polled periodically (maybe every hour or so?. Open to suggestions on this. How do most of you set up periodic polling?). How do you set up polling of differing devices with different polling times? I would like our access layer switches polled differently than our core routers (Is this how most of you are using this?)
Third question is if via the seed file, you can have the ?Monitor Resource Use? specification set? I did not see a field within the seed file to tweak something like this.
The documentation section also noted that ?L2 devices must be manually added? but then proceeded to use the seed file approach. I can use the seed file for L2 or L3 devices can?t I?
Any other Best Practices on initial setup would be greatly appreciated. Also any words of wisdom on what not to do would be helpful as well!

my understanding is that topology discovery doesn't work until you manually configure it. importing devices via the seed file doesn't enable it. As part of setting it up, you can control it by using the "valid networks" setting.

I don't believe this is configurable. When I pressed Cisco for details about when SNMP is used, I was told that devices may even be polled based on actual events coming into CSMARS. There is a totally separate 5 minute polling time when "monitor resource use" is enabled.

Can't answer this. I don't imagine it would be defaulted to enabled, but it should be easy to test.

this just means that they won't be automatically added by the topology discovery process. A seed file will work.

verify that your devices are actually reporting into CSMARS as expected.

Triggering new Mac setup

I just bought a new 24" iMac (love it!), and am cleaning my old iMac in order to sell it. I've done a fresh install of the OS (Jaguar and then the Panther upgrade that came shortly after I bought it) and the apps it came with. And, I've used Software Update to update the OS (to 10.3.9) and the apps.
At this point, I'd like to arrange for my old iMac, when it boots, to welcome the new person (who's going to have bought it) and walk them through setting up an account, setting up networking, etc., just like the Mac does when you first buy one new.
Is there a way that I can set it up to do this?

The solutions is simple. All you have to do is to delete the hidden file called .AppleSetupDone in located in /var/db. You can do this by opening up Terminal and typing "sudo rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone"
After removing this file, the Apple Setup Assistant will launch the next time you restart the computer

Initial Mail Setup for Old AOL Address

BACKGROUND
I have an AOL e-mail address. Until recently, I logged on to the AOL application and retrieved my e-mail that way (I had never used the Apple Mail application). AOL recently allowed their users to get rid of AOL as their ISP and so not use the AOL application, but at the same time to retain their e-mail address. So I got rid of AOL as my ISP and moved to a local cable company.
QUESTION
I still have my AOL e-mail address. I can easily access the e-mail to this address by logging onto AOL.com and going to the e-mail section.
1) Can I also use Apple's Mail to access this e-mail address?
2) If so, how do I set it up? The Mail setup routine is filled with (to me) unreadable techo-gibberish (by the way, I did get a degree in computer science back in the day). My specific questions are (when setting up Mail):
- what Account Type do I want (POP, IMAP, Exchange)? The help files tell me to ask my ISP, which doesn't help me much.
- then (if I guess on Account Type), Mail asks for Incoming Mail Server. Again, I don't know what they're asking for.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

You may find AOL Service Assistant - Internet Utilities the simplest way to set up your AOL account for Mail.
Believe it or not, it is a fairly well written, OS X-savvy application. It is also the only simple way to get any saved mail out of AOL's proprietary "Personal Filing Cabinet" format or contacts out of it's proprietary Address Book format.
You can choose to configure any of the four Apple apps its supports individually, but if you choose to import old AOL email, you must configure a Mail account for AOL at the same time. Because of this, I recommend not using the manual method from http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/imap/applemail.html to set up the account, because you may end up with two email accounts. I would also first make backup copies of Mail's pref file (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist) & the main Mail docs folder (~/Library/Mail) just in case something weird happens.
If you have a lot of saved AOL mail, the import process can take quite a while, so give it at least say, 10 minutes per 100 messages, before deciding it isn't responding -- there is a progress bar but it doesn't move for minutes at a time. Also, the account settings it installs may be slightly different from the ones in the unofficial guide -- basically, it installs the SSL settings the guide mentions. The included Read Me has more info about that.
I have used this app with Mail & with Address Book & it does work with Mail 2.x & Os 10.4.7.

Initial AX Setup as Client

New Mac User. Bet this has gone around many times...here is my specific situation:
new macbook pro, new AX 802.11n, existing DSL and Dlink router setup.
Trying to use AX to stream itunes to home stereo only.
Thinking that i can leave my internet running off the existing setup and just add in the AX. Have tried to follow instructions online and AX box and cannot get close. Thought it would be easy...was i wrong! Dont know all the tech jargon being thrown around.
Anyone able to give me steps to do this? Think i must have to do a factory reset yet again (fyi, i dont ever get flashing green after the paperclip trick...).
Help greatly appreciated.
ps will i be able, if this works, to use internet and stream itunes to stereo simultaneously? that is my hope...

Initial notebook setup freeze Microsoft account verification

Just bought a new notebook when going through the initial setup I put in a Microsoft username and password but I don't think I have one so now under setup it's still thinking 20 minutes later and I can't cancel it with a before button. The next button doesn't work. How can I start setup again any keys to try go back to start?

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP 14-D015TU Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset.
When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
This should start things over again for you.
