Initial Observations - iPads at the Office

We are initiating a beta program for our organization to deploy iPads and iPhones to select staff. I've been charged with (and was a proponent of) integrating IOS into a mostly Windows organization.
After much testing of iPads we began deploying them and have found that the devices themselves are fantastic. They will clearly make staff more productive and enable much faster communication and the ability to do more from the road.
However, I'm quickly learning that they are not ready for Enterprise use because the implementation is painful. There is no way to centralize billing. Purchasing apps for multiple devices with one account is way too much work and in fact I'm now frozen out from using our credit card until I contact Apple. Setting up the iPads requires either a credit card to activate iTunes or fancy footwork to fool iTunes into allowing the "No Credit Card" option.
To get around some limitations we tried "gifting" apps, only to find our card blocked by Apple after a few purchases. We can not print out a receipt for our purchases (waiting on the Apple email receipt, days later, is not an option).
I think once the bloom is off the rose, and the novelty wears off, Apple is going to face a backlash from businesses if it does not quickly address these issues. Perhaps we're caught in the middle - too small to incorporate more sophisticated device management services but too small to treat each iPad as an "individual" owned device. I hope with IOS 5 coming out soon Apple gives much more thought to how businesses integrate devices, and related Apps, into their business practices.

Going through the same thing. we have to find all the loops holes to be able to gets stuff. our group is small enough that we just made everyone one set up their own account using their work email. if we want to buy apps we just have the person who has the credit card by online gift cards and let people load the money to their account.
from what I haVe read Apple does not intend to change their way to making Apple friendly to enterprise use. which is a shame because more and more companies want to use them for that way and are having the same issues.

my location is found when i am in my office and wireless (don't have 3G)
When i am home and connected to my wireless router - ( and i am connected as i surf the net, get emails etc.) it says it cannot find me.
That's because the location of your home router is not yet in the router location database.

  • Working with the MS Word iPad and other office apps: Onscreen keyboard will not minimize

With Microsoft's announcement today of allowing limited editing capabilities in their mobile apps, I installed the updates on my iPad.  So far, everything works great...with one exception:  The onboard keyboard will not get out of the way...won't
    minimize.
I have last year's iPad Air and was trying to use my Bluetooth keyboard with each of the MS Office IOS apps.  Consistently, across all of these apps, the keyboard would stay on the screen and the key for minimizing the keyboard had no affect, even though
my Bluetooth keyboard was linked and working.  Any other app I use automatically removes the onscreen keyboard when the Bluetooth keyboard is detected.
This does make the applications difficult and not much fun to use.
Any thoughts?  Anybody else notice the same issue?
My office has begun deploying Office 2013/365 and I know we'll have some users on iPads and other tablets, so I'm real interested in correcting this if at all possible.

If you are saying that the iPod asks for the password for the network and you do not know it, what may work is to turn on iCloud keychain for the iPod and iPad., Thet may sync the password from the iPad to the iPod

  • I group messaged from my ipad and this has screwed up the way my messages are reveived by my friends (it creates new threads in their phones with my email in place of my contact name) I've stopped messaging from my ipad but the problem remains. Any help?

I have an iPhone 4S and use the group texting feature ALL THE TIME. I recently updated my iPad to the latest software and made the colossal mistake of continuing my group messaging from my iPad while connected to wifi. Doing this has successfully screwed but every group text thread I am in, to the point where its very hard for those involved in the thread to keep up. When I initially messaged those I was already engaged in text threads with it created a new thread in their phones replacing my name in their phones with my email. At first this was not a big deal but ever since then the people I am messaging have become increasingly frustrated with how my messages come through. If I am messaged in a group text and respond to it, sometimes when I respond it will create an entirely different thread in my recipients phones. So at that point they have to switch threads in order to read what I wrote. The new thread that my phone creates will send the message under my email not my name (related to the contact they have me saved as in their phones). The worst part about it is that there seems to be no rhyme or reason to why or when my phone will send the message as normal or under my email like it did with my iPad. I haven’t messaged from my iPad since these problems immediately began a month ago but the issues still continue. I have tried everything to get this to stop, I’ve turned off my wifi, I’ve had my friends delete the threads that my messages create in their phones. I’ve had them delete my email in their contact lists and nothing has worked. Can you help me? Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Note: My phone message no different whatsoever. All the threads have remained the same. The issue is what it is doing to the people that I am messaging.
        Best Regards

I have this identical problem.  For a while my group texts didnt show up on my ipad.  Then one day they did, maybe everyone in the group started using the same os version or something.  Ever since my first reply to the group there have been complaints of multiple threads.  I can not find a pattern for when my group text's decide they want to create a new thread. (it doesnt happen every time)  Everyone in the group has deleted the thread, we've all toggled imessage on/off etc.  There still hasn't been a solution.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Can my colleagues access my itunes account and all of the apps in there from their own pcs? What we really need is a shared itunes account so that anyone in the office can add apps to the account and everyone else will be able to access it?

I have an itunes account to update the office ipad. Now we have more of them can my colleagues access my itunes account including the apps to update their ipads with? it seems silly for everyone to have a seperate account and purchase apps that i have already bought.  We just want to share and update one account that everyone can use and access from their own pc.

Unless I am missing the point here - or in the event that there are different terms and conditions for the use of iPad in the Enterprise with regard to iTunes purchases - once you have purchased an app - you are free to download that app again - at no charge - to as many iDevices as you desire - as long as you are using the same Apple ID and iTunes account that you used to make the original purchase.
So the short answer to the question - IMHO - is Yes! My wife, my daughter and I share one iTunes account and we download apps onto four different iDevices - and only pay for the apps once. The purchases are tied to the Apple/iTunes account and not to the PC or the iDevice.
The only caveat to this point is - I have no idea how Apple handles purchase for businesses meaning that I don't know if businesses are subject to the same terms and conditions as we "everyday" users.
Maybe the company could set up one iTunes account and you could all share from there but I still don't see why this can't be done. However, that is why I suggest that this question might be better served being posted in the iPad in the Enterprise section of the ASC.

  • I cannot download an episode from my cloud to my iPAD, but the rest of the season worked.

I initially tried to download the first few episodes of a show that I had purchased in iTunes and kept getting a "download error" for episode one, but others would download just fine.  Then I tried "download all" and the entire season downloaded to my iPad just fine, except for that first episode.
I can't find a way to get the episode from the cloud.  I also do not know how to delete the failed attempt from the "downloads" section of iTunes on my iPad.
    I'd appreciate any help.

The fact that you can receive means you have a valid e mail address, and have established the connection to the incoming server, so all of that works.  Since the send does not work, that means your outgoing server is rejecting whatever settings you used formthe outgoing set up.  Try them again.
Google your particular isp, and ipad and many times you will find the exact settings needed for your isp.  Or tell us here, and soneone else may be on the same isp.  Some mail services need you to change a port, or have a unique name for the outgoing server.
    Kep trying.

  • How can i save and download word documents on my ipad without the pages app

Need to know how to save documents on my ipad so i can share the same version of documents between my computer and my ipad on the same network. I do not have the pages app. and Most of the documents are either pdfs of word docs. so need to be able to save them on ipad and retrieve them when i am on the move. Pls help?

You have to have an app on the iPad that is compatible with the particular file type that you want to save, edit or share. You can look at any of the word processing apps - Pages is one, Documents to Go, Quick Office Pro - but you have to have one like that in order to save and edit Word files.
With pdf files - iBooks will work to save them - but that's all. Other apps like GoodReader will let you annotate them.
You have to decide which app will serve your needs best and them download them in order to save, edit and share those file types.

  • Uses for an Ipad in the IT Department

    Hello all,
I had a few questions.  I'm in a small IT group and we were considering to get Ipads for everyday use, I.E. task management, mail, and remoting. I'm just wounding if any of you had any experience with deploying ipads and manageing them them.
Are there any suggestions on which software we should get; as in MDM software, VPP deployment software, or any others out there?
I've read just about everything I could find on the subject, but there aren't many examples of how people integrated ipad into the IT field.
Also what other apps are out there for monitoring wireless networks or office programs such as word or excel, and what about task management and prioritizing them.
    Thanks for your input.

There's a whole mess of network tools ranging from subnet calculators to port scanners. Another good tool is Rove Mobile Admin.
As for an MDM server orr volume purchasing, I guess that would depend on the volume of devices you need to manage. If you're only dealing with a few devices it's not worth the cost.
