Initial System backup takes DAYS!!!!

I attached a USB HD to a new Extreme Base Station and started TM.
It's been going 35 hours and completed 26GB of 112GB!!!!
I have seen others complain but this is pathetic. Why is it not going faster - especially when the computer is not in use?
At this rate it will not be able to backup larger files that change every hour - defeating part of its purpose.

I don't have a TC and don't use TM, but based on my Unix/MacOS X experience, would like to offer these things to check:
# Are your volumes ok? Clean bill of health from a Repair Disk and a Repair Permissions? This applies both to the volumes being backed up as well as the volume(s) being backed to
# Nothing else is running while the backup is taking place? Files being held open by other applications may be slowing TM down.
# TM is running under an account with admin privileges?
# How is TM on the Mac communicating with its TC? Wired or wireless? How busy is the network?
# Have you done regular maintenance on the volume being backed up? Just to make sure there aren't a zillion old logfiles in there and other stuff like that.
Hope this helps.

Would a backup occur if I was downloading pictures to Picassa 3 ??? Did a real backup take place w/I-Tunes, at that same time ???   I don't remember if I saw that on the screen.  Three days later while trying to sync my iPHone,  I had a msg "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."
Concern:  Will I lose all my media and other data ?  Just hate to push the RESTORE & UPDATE button, only to find out I have LOST all that stuff.  My son says it should be backed up when I did the 4.3.2 of iPhone. Concerned a ton over this problem.
Thanks to anyone out there who might be able to help.  Would appreciate any ideas.
      PLS HELP
    --tinker62

Syncing photos does NOT sync the phone; the camera is considered a separate device from the rest of the iPhone. You sync with iTunes, and should do it often enough so you don't cry if you lose all data on the phone.
At this point you have no choice; there is no way to NOT restore it. If the last backup is not corrupt it should restore the phone as of the time of the last backup.

  • HT1176 how long should an initial backup take?

How long should an initial backup take?

If the Mac is connected to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, the backup will proceed on average at about 30-35 GB per hour.
So, if you have 100 GB to backup, the process will be approximately 3 hours.
Bets are off with a backup using wireless, but it will likely be at least 3-4 times longer than the wired Ethernet connection.

  • Can initial TM backup be interrupted and resumed?

It appears the answer is "no." I'm trying to do the first TM backup for my work laptop via FW 800 and it's really slow. After 9 hours it still hasn't backed up 100gb. I can't safely leave the laptop out overnight, so I was hoping I could just continue the backup the next day. But it starts over again instead of resuming progress.

    George,
How are you 'stopping' the backup?
I have found, via ethernet, that it takes about 50min for every 10GBs of data. While I perform backups via FireWire as well, I have not yet determined at what speed they take place. Either way, for large amounts of data, it going to take some time.
    The following may be helpful...
    *Stopping A Time Machine Backup*
Since the average incremental backup only requires about 2-4 minutes, it shouldn't be that much of an inconvenience to just wait for the process to finish. If you must stop a backup, then use either “Stop Backing Up” from the Time Machine menu, or click the tiny "x" icon in the Time Machine preference pane. Both procedures will work and should not be considered a dangerous interruption. [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15144.html]
The following KB article discusses backup interruptions related to the Time Capsule, but the information can apply to other Time Machine hard disks as well:
Generally, Time Machine is smart enough to pickup where it left off when a backup is interrupted. It deals with the procedure of a normal shutdown or sleep with elegance. [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15142.html]
But if the backup process is interrupted by a system crash or some form of power interruption, then anomalies may be introduced requiring Time Machine to perform a "deep traversal". In this case, Time Machine will display “Preparing…” for quite some time. This is normal, so allow the process to continue, perhaps even overnight.
Unfortunately, if the initial full backup is interrupted by a power failure or such, then, to avoid issues later, it may be best to erase the drive and begin the full backup again.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.
    Cheers!

  • Time Machine Problem - New Internal Hard Drive, Now Backup Takes Hours

    Need some help!
    Background.
Almost 4 year old 24" aluminum iMac; 4 gb ram; 500 gb hard drive; OS 10.6.8.
About 2 months after Alpple Care expired, the internal hard drive failed (New Year's Eve of all times!). Everything else working great.
Had a Mac technician I know install a new 750 gb drive for me. I cloned back from SuperDuper, and was ready to go. The SuperDuper external is 1.5 TB, partitioned - one half TM, the other half SuperDuper.
All apps, internet, mail - fine.
I hooked up my existing Time Macinne (probably not a good idea), and the next backup failed.
Did some research, and since I have plenty of archived backup anyway, decided that the best thing to do would be to erase the TM external, and start fresh.
Did that, and as expected, first backup took a couple hours.
    The Problem.
Now, every incremental backup takes 4 to 5 hours, even if no data has changed.
"Indexing" lasts for 45 minues; "Backing Up" reads 600,000 plus files, which also goes on for 30 or 40 minutes (approx.), and wants to Calculate changes etc forever; then the actual backup starts out at 10 kb, and in 20 minutes is at 30 kb and then after about an hour I start getting into gbs and the blue bar progresses pretty fast after that. Then "Finishing Up" takes approximately 2 - 3 hours.
    Not right.  :~(
    What I've Done to Toubleshoot.
First, I re-erased the TM external.
Then reset PRAM and did an SMC reset on the iMac.
Then backed up to TM again. The same problem persisted.
So next, I repeated that process (other than backing up), and I also deleted from the Root Library/Preferences com.apple.timemachine.plist, and from Home/Library/Preferences deleted com.apple.finder.plist. Then rebboted the iMac. Then I did a Disk Utility verify of the empty external - all was/is fine. Then I ran DiskWarrior on the iMac and all was fine; repaired permissions on the iMac from DiscWarrior as well. Then, I did another TM backup to the external, which took a couple hours since it was backing up to an empty drive.
Next 3 incremental backups still take 4 to 5 hours, even if nothing has changed on theiMac.
    The Request.
Please if anyone can give me some easy to understand step by step options I might try to get TM working correctly again, it will be most appreciated.
If I've left out any details that might assist, please also let me know.
The problem computer is at home and I'm at work, so if any logs are needed, I can post those later today (but in that event, please tell me exactly which log to post and how to isolate it from System Profiler or Console (as there are many logs to choose from and I want to provide the proper info if someone needs to see a log to assist)).
    Thanks in advance!

    Pondini,
Did every step in D2 (green box) - except did not reinstall Combo Updater which I did late last night.
After that, did a TM backup - started at 6:15.
    All apps were off.
    Sequence of events and facts:
At start, 434.03 0f 500.1 GB available on the external TM
Last backup shown - 7:58 AM; Oldest Back Up - Yesterday at 9:56 (that's the 1st backup after I reinitialized the external for the 2nd or 3rd time trying to get this thing figured out)
Upon starting and doing the backup -
Preparing 250,000 (approx.) items (too quick to get the final number) - Parenthetically, this AM it was over 600,000; probably has to do with turning off Spotlight per your D2 instructions
    Next message -
    Backing Up 6.96 GB
Hung at 2 kb to 90 kb for 20 minutes before progressing
Ultimately, at 1.78 GB the  progress bar started moving rapidly (as it should) - so this isn't a cable connection issue - the Backup phase took 22 minutes, but from 1.78 GB to 6.96 GB took only a few seconds; I have seen this precise same sequence repeatedly the past 2 days
Next - Backing Up (the candy cane blue and white progress bar)  - Preparing 140,000 items - took 12 minutes
Now shows 426.95 GB available on the external
Next - Backing Up (no count of items shown) - started at 7:05 and went until 7:45 (40 minutes)
Next - Finishing Backup (blue/white candy cane progress bar; no count of items shown) - started at 7:45 - went until sometime after 8:15 (can't give a precise time because I need to sit down and eat :~)  )
Backup completed (between bites of chicken) at 8:23.
    Over 2 hours - something isn't right.
Also, TM Prefs tells me that the Latest Backup was at 7:44 - odd.
Anyway - to take a step further, here's the TM Buddy widget info you might need:
    Successful Backup: 02:06:32.
There is no log entry or data showing.
Just as I sent this, a new backup started, and it appears to be going through the same routine, from Preparing  ....
    Gotta eat.
Please post any further instructions and I'll do what I can tonight.
    Thanks!
What is the problem? How do I speed this mother up?
    Thanks!

Kindly help me out with these issues. If anybody has any documents, kindly email me at [email protected] Points will be rewarded for any kind of help. Thanks a ton in advance.

    Hi Bipin,
This blog contains very little info. It says zip the XI files and extract the compressed zip files. Also it talks about backup of registry.
I am on AIX OS. How can I backup the registry in AIX? Also how should I zip all the files and extract those compressed files during restore. Is there any SAP utility to do that. Kindly let me know.

  • Safari 4.0.2 initial web page takes ages to load ...

    Hi,
When I start Safari, the browser loads up fine to a blank page. I'll select one of my bookmarks or type in a web address in the address bar, press return and wait absolutely ages for the page to load.
Any subsequent pages will load at normal speed, without delay. There is nothing wrong with my broadband connection - it is just this initial page that takes absolutely ages to load up.
Can anybody help in trying to diagnose this problem please? I have read a few things on the web about Safari slowness, but none specific to just the first page of a Safari session loading slowly. I have signed up with OpenDNS and added their DNS servers to my internet connection, but this has not helped the problem at all.
    Thanks

  • Time Machine backup takes so long

    Hello
Normally my backups take about 10 minutes, but since last week they take up to 5 hours.
I have this little app "LogViewer for Time Machine" which extracts relevant information
from the log. On 7/12 I got this report:
    04:28:36 - Starting manual backup
    04:28:37 - Backing up to: /Volumes/MyBook/Backups.backupdb
04:28:41 - Using file event preflight for Macintosh HD
04:28:43 - Will copy (391.8 MB) from Macintosh HD
    04:28:43 - Found 585 files (391.8 MB) needing backup
04:28:44 - 2.02 GB required (including padding), 301.13 GB available
04:34:20 - Copied 20899 files (359.7 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
04:34:20 - Using file event preflight for Macintosh HD
04:34:20 - Will copy (Zero KB) from Macintosh HD
04:34:20 - Found 9 files (Zero KB) needing backup
04:34:20 - 1.55 GB required (including padding), 300.81 GB available
04:34:23 - Copied 260 files (143 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
    04:34:26 - Created new backup: 2013-12-07-043424
    04:34:27 - Starting post-backup thinning
    04:36:51 - Deleted /Volumes/MyBook/Backups.backupdb/uome’s iMac/2013-11-07-014345 (186.9 MB)
04:36:51 - Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed
    04:36:51 - Backup completed successfully.
Everything looks normal. A few days later I got the following report:
    02:01:14 - Starting manual backup
    02:01:20 - Backing up to: /Volumes/MyBook/Backups.backupdb
02:01:43 - Using file event preflight for Macintosh HD

    04:41:08 - Found 21 files (7 bytes) needing backup
04:41:08 - 1.55 GB required (including padding), 299.5 GB available
04:42:26 - Copied 791 files (2 KB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    04:42:40 - Created new backup: 2013-12-12-044227

04:57:40 - Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed
    04:57:55 - Backup completed successfully.
    It took three hours.
    - How can 21 files have a size of 7 bytes?
    - How can 791 files have a size of 2KB?
Is this OK? Or what is happening here?
    Many thanks.

Thank you for your answers and questions.

  • Time Machine will not complete a system backup and terminates with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.  This follows a problem when Time machne terminated when the volume was almost full.

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record.  I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable  system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean.  Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16".  That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related.  After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours.  I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume.  I also erased and reformatted the TM volume.  However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".  I restarted the computer with no change in results.  Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup.  I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive.  My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB.  My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours.  I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination.  As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty.  As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing.  Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way?   It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Abap+Java System Backup

    Dear Experts,
We just take our bi system(abap+java)  backup online, so could you please help me which files we need to backup during the Sap system is online,
As the below help.sap.com link said that for filesystem backup "Create a backup of the SAP system directory /usr/sap/<SID>." (before we need to stop SDM)
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/4b/d8f23ea4b42e5ae10000000a114084/content.htm
Can we backup entire /usr/sap/<SID> directory while sap and db is still runnig ? if not which directories we need to backup ?
Should we backup filesystem and db backup at the same time for a consistent backup, or can we schedule separately filesystem and db backup if there is no deployment exist between db backup and filesystem backup schedules,
    Best Regards,
    Atakan

As suggested you can either go with the ofline backup for the abap and for Java you need to have the filesystem backup.
Or you should go witht he file system backup of all the file system. But for that you need downtime.
So what i shall suggest you thet go vith the online backup and have the archive log on and have archive logs backup too.
And just the online backup completes have the Java export of the Java system of your BI.Durng the exportthe SDM will stop while the Servernode and the dispatcher service will be running,so no error will occur when some one is using the JAVA BI.
This is the safest method ad you can recover the JAVA system any time. Please also have an offline backup at weekends of the abap system when its down.
Please check the Password of DDIC of client 000 and the J2ee_admin before taking the export.
    Thanks

revert back to Maverick that is what I had to finally do. This was the worst upgrade I have ever seen. Hopefully you have Time Machine backup and can revert back. It was pretty painless except for a few issues. I will wait until Apple gets their stuff together on this upgrade or may never will.

  • Finishing Backup takes too much time.

Finishing backup takes too much time in my system , sometimes 30 minutes even 1 hour! and sometimes right after finishing backup(before the icon in the menu bar stops) it starts to take another backup( and usually 10MB or something small !) or the estimation is wrong .
Sometimes I see my system that is taking backups hours and hours(just with small stops!)
and the speed rate I of data transfer is reduced, while I set it to be on maximum speed in Time Capsule.

  • Oracle DB and File system backup configuration

    Hi,
As I understand from the help documents and guides, brbackup, brarchive and brrestore are the tools which are used for backing up and restoring the oracle database and the file system. We have TSM (Trivoli Storage manager) in our infrastructure for managing the backup centrally. Before configuring the backup with TSM, I want to test the backup/restore configuration locally i.e. storing the backup to local file system and then restoring from there. Our backup strategy is to have full online backup on the weekends and incremental backup on the weekdays. Given this, following are the things, I want to test.
    1. Full online backup (to local file system)
    2. Incremental online backup (to local file system)
    3. Restore (from local file system)
I found help documents to be very generic and couldn't get any specific information for the comprehensive configuration to achieve this. Can someone help with end to end configuration?
We are using SAP Portal 7.0 (NW2004s) with Oracle 10g database hosted on AIX server.
    Helpful answers will be rewarded
    Regards,
    Chandra

Thanks for your feedback. I am almost clear about this issue now, except one point need to be confirmed: do you mean that on linux or unix, if required, we can set "direct to disk" from OS level, but for windows, it's default "direct to disk", we do not need to set it manually.
And I have a further question: If a database is stored on a SAN disk, say, a volume from disk array, the disk array could take snapshot for a disk on block level, we need to implement online backup of database. The steps are: alter tablespace begin backup, alter system suspend, take a snapshot of the volume which store all database files, including datafiles, redo logs, archived redo logs, controll file, service parameter file, network parameter files, password file. Do you think this backup is integrity or not. please note, we do not flush the fs cache before all these steps. Let's assume the SAN cache could be flushed automatically. Can I think it's integrity because the redo writes are synchronous.

  • Hyper-V Cluster Hosts BMR Backups take over 12 hours

    Hello,
We are using 2012 R2 DC to create a Hyper-V  2 node cluster.  The backup is DPM 2012 R2 running on 2012 R2 DC.  The DPM system was upgraded to 2012 R2 from DPM 2010 about a year ago and has worked for the most part.
Two problems we are having.  I am using the VSS writer from the SAN manufacture.  On our old cluster I used the Microsoft VSS writer and had no problems unless I loaded the C: up with too many files on the cluster node.  I saw another post
that says to disable the HW VSS writer but that was unsuccessful the last time I tried it.  I am going to try it again though.
    1.  I currently get a random VM that hangs during the backup.  The VM still runs but I cannot migrate it and backups fail from that point on.  In Hyper-V backup the Status field shows "Backing up...".  I am waiting for this
to happen on a non critical VM but alas that is not happening. <sigh>  To correct the problem I have to pull power from the cluster node the system was on and then about 90% of the time I have to replace to different .sys files in c:\windows\system23\drivers
and then run the startup repair utility from the windows install disk.
    2.  I did not notice this until this week but my BMR backups of the Hyper-V hosts are taking over 12 hours to complete.  The BMR on a different stand alone server is taking less than 10 min.  What is causing this and if these are taking this
long is it interfering with the backup of the VMs on the cluster and causing the problem in paragraph 1 above?  I have tried to stagger my backups so they don't interfere with each other but if this one is taking 12-14 hours that will never happen.

    Hi,
Are you on DPM 2012 R2 UR3 ?    If so - there is no need to a vss hardware provider, you can safely un-install it and DPM backups will continue to work fine.
Problem-1)  I currently get a random VM that hangs during the backup.  The VM still runs but I cannot migrate it and backups fail from that point on.  In Hyper-V backup the Status field shows "Backing up...".
Response-1) Is there still an active backup job for that VM on the DPM server - and does it show that it's still transferring changes ?   If not, then wait for other VM backups to complete on that host, then manually stop the DPMRA service - that
will reset the "backup in progress" flag and allow the VM to be managed.  We have an open bug that we're working on to fix that issue.
Problem-2) My BMR backups of the Hyper-V hosts are taking over 12 hours to complete.
Response-2)  DPM is not responsible for the amount of time a BMR backup takes to complete.  To troubleshoot this outside of DPM perform the following.
First make sure no active BMR job is running by looking at running jobs on the DPM server.
Second - using task manager make sure there are no WBENGINE.EXE process running on the DC you want to test - if so - kill it with task manager.
To test BMR backup outside of DPM, try this command:
    1) Set up a network share on a remote machine
    \\server\bmrshare
    2) From an administrative command prompt on the PS, type:
                  wbadmin.exe start backup -allcritical -backuptarget:\\server\bmrshare
This should show you the list of volumes included in the BMR backup and ask "Do you want to start the backup operation?. - Type Y to continue..
See how long it takes to complete or see if it hangs - kill it if you need to after X hours - but look on the share and see how much it copied before killing it.
You can try disabling chimney on both DPM and DC to see if that helps.
c:\>Netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled
