Initial Time Machine backup 60 GB smaller than HD content?

Hello,
I've just performed an initial backup with TIme Machine on an external HD. The result is that TM's backup's size is 360 GB, but my internal HD that has 420 GB of data...
I had no problems during the backup, no warning messages. I don't understand, so I'm not very confortable pursuing with this backup.
The only explanation could be that I've a lot of duplicates on my iMac (2x big iTunes library with same files...) at the moment: does TM save only one copy of same files that are in different directories of the source HD?
Thanks :)

You can verify your Time Machine backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
Added:
Removed:
Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Initial Time Machine backup is larger than the HD it's backing up?

    Howdy,
I started the initial backup of my MacBook Pro to my TimeCapsule, and it now says that it has backed up 4.1 GB of 159.5 GB. But the internal HD of the MacBook Pro is only 80 GB, and 31.4 GB are free!
Does anyone know what's up with this?
My primary user account is encrypted with FileVault.

I don't use FileVault, but I suspect that is the culprit. Since FV can only be backed up after you log out, it might be causing the problem. I know from reading the posts that FW and TM do not play very well together. It might be calculating your home directory twice. Just a thought.

  • HT201250 How long should an initial time machine backup of tack for 675 GB?s with a USB external hard drive?

How long should an initial time machine backup of tack for 675 GB?s with a USB external hard drive?

Not much faster than 40 GBs-60GBs per hour. So, minimally, around 12 hours.

I interrupted my initial Time Machine backup.  How do I reinstate the initial backup?

Turn off TM, erase the external with Disk Utility, turn on TM and re-select the external HD.

  • Time Machine drive is smaller than my Macbook Pro's drive.

Hello, ever since I've bought my new Macbook Pro about a month ago I've been doing Time Machine backups every day on an external laptop hard drive that is 40GBs in size. My Macbook's drive is already filling up and is going up to par with 40GBs the same as the external drive's size.
Just today I've done the routine Time Machine backup, and told me the drive is full so it needed to delete older time machine backups to be able to backup new ones.
My question, what if my Macbook's drive gets really filled up, for example up to 100GBs, will the external still be doing backups? Might be a silly question but to tell you the truth I dont know much on how the Time Machine backup utility works.

Your TimeMachine backup should initially create a full back up and then do incremental backups. So, depending on how large your initial back up was (which would include all installed apps, music files, video files, etc... unless you specifically excluded them) any extra space will be used for backing up only newer versions of files that have changed. When an "older" back up is deleted... it is just deleting the oldest version of files for which it has multiple versions stored. If the amount of data on your internal drive goes over the amount of space available, TimeMachine will not be able to keep all of your data backed up and you will receive the drive full message (you just can't back up more data than you have space for... although... off the top of my head, I'm not sure if TimeMachine compresses the backups... but even still, you're working with very little elbow room). Also... unless your external laptop drive is an SSD... 40GB would indicate that it's fairly old. You may want to consider looking at just getting a newer external hard drive. High capacity drives in the 500GB (2.5" form factor) can be found for U.S. $50 and less now.

  • Initial Time Machine Backup Stuck on "Indexing Backup"

I have Mac Mini running 10.7.2.  I just got an external hard drive and am trying to run an initial back up using Time Machine.  I am running my computer in Safe Mode as it won't start in regular mode.  I formatted the HD and began to run Time Machine back up.  HD is connected via USB 2.0 wire.
It has now been 12 hours and is still on Indexing Backup...  Is this normal for initial back up?  I know it takes a long time for initial but this doesn't seem right. What do I do to correct if it isn't correct?  Should I stop and try again?

Thank you very much.  With your info I gave up on the back up and ran Disk and Permission Repair for the 3rd or 4th time and crossed my fingers and restarted my machine and it WORKED!  I ran time Machine back up and when I woke up this morning it was all done!  Yeahhhh!
I wasn't sure what was causing it not to start in regular mode and as I'm not too much of a techie I was scared that I was teetetering on the brink of losing everything.  The machine would run so I didn't think it was a hard drive issue, but not knowing for sure I was concerned and after losing everythign once before years ago, I was worried. I have it backed up on line but wanted a 2nd (local) version that wouldn't entail tying up bandwidth for days.  In the end it worked out!
But the short answer is, Time Machine Backup does NOT work in Safe Mode...

  • Time Machine backups are bigger than expected

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone would know why, all of a sudden after a day or two ago, my Time Machine is suddenly insisting on backing up well over 4GB at a time? Before then my backups would almost always be below the 100MB mark. Has some update happened that would have caused this?
I have looked in Console but unfortunately am none the wiser. Is there some way of finding out a list of the files Time Machine is actually backing up? If so then I'd be able to track down this problem since I am fast running out of space on my Time Machine backup drive!
    Many thanks for listening...
    :-Joe

    Jowie,
Consider the following info that I have gleaned, some of it may explain some it.
    *Incremental Backups Seem Too Large!*
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
One poster observed regarding Photoshop: “If you find yourself working with large files, you may discover that TM is suddenly backing up your scratch disk's temp files. This is useless, find out how to exclude these (I'm not actually sure here). Alternatively, turn off TM whilst you work in Photoshop.” (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1209412)
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer may be describing what you are experiencing: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. Then pull down the "action" menu (the gear thing) and select "delete all backups" and the older stuff vanishes.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder it you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.

  • Initial Time machine backup to Time capsule results in kernel panic

I recently purchased a Retina display MacBook Pro (running Lion at the time) and transferred the data from an external hard drive with my Time Machine backups from my previous MBP. I also bought a new Time Capsule.
The first time I tried to back up to the Time Capsule from the Retina MBP via an ethernet connection it got to 40GB of 140GB before it shut down from a kernel panic. Interestingly, the Time Machine backup was successful when I used the external hard drive I was previously using for my Time Machine backups (connected via USB).
I don't think there is an issue with the Time Capsule because Finder can locate the Time Capsule and I can copy and paste files from the Macintosh HD to the Time Capsule disk.
I've done the following steps in order to try and fix the problem:
    1. Repair permissions
    2. Verify and Repair Macintosh HD
    3. Updated the operating system to Mountain Lion (at which point I successfully completed a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive I was using for Time machine backups but was unable to backup to the Time Capsule without the computer crashing from a kernel panic)
    4. Used Airport Utility to erase the sparse disk image bundle that had been created on the Time Capsule then tried to back up via ethernet to the time capsule - kernel panic ensued at 40GB of 140GB
    5. Used Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and re-installed Mountain Lion. Transferred data from the external hard drive Time Machine backup from step 3.
    6. Erased the sparse disk image bundle on the Time Capsule again.
    7. Tried to backup to the Time Capsule again via Ethernet - kernel panic.
For each of the attemtps to back up to the Time Capsule I've used a different ethernet cable (Cat 5 and 5e) and plugged it into a different ethernet port on the Time Capsule each time. I've also tried using both Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor).
I'm out of ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas!!
If anyone knows how to read error logs, here's the readout from one of the kernic panics:

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    LaCie drive software
    VirusBarrier
I suggest you uninstall them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault. "VirusBarrier" is harmful and should not be reinstalled in any case.
If there's no improvement after making the suggested changes, post again.

  • Initial Time Machine Backup with Time Capsule

    Hello,
I just started to back everything up with Time Capsule and Time Machine. The backup is 45 GB so it's going to take a while. Two questions:
    1. There is a Volume created on my Desktop called "Backup of [My Computer Name]". Is this supposed to happen?
    2. In the actual drive, there is a Sparse file, not the usual backups.backupdb folder that is created when attaching a drive via USB. Is this supposed to be like that as well?
    Thanks!

Thank you for the response. I have a couple more questions.
    1. Is there a way to manually go through the files? I used to be able to when it was backing up locally through USB.
    2. If I change the folder name of the location of the Time Machine backups, do I have to start my backups all over again?
    Thanks!

  • Can Time Machine backups for more than one Mac be sent to the same external hard drive?

It's pretty straightforward, really.  We have two Macs, both running Mountain Lion.  Can we use the same external hard drive for Time Machine backups of both?

It would be best to partition the HDD - one volume for each Mac (you cannot partition a Time Capsule).
Note that by doing so, you will lose both backups should the drive fail.

  • Initial time machine backup larger than actual computer harddrive

I've got an iMac with a 1TB harddrive and am trying to use a time machine set up to back up my harddrive. The external harddrive I'm using for my back up is also 1TB. I currently have about 135GB of free space on my iMac's harddrive and my external drive is completely empty. When I try to back up using time machine it tells me that the back up is 1.2TB and cannot fit on my 1TB external harddrive. What would cause the initial back up to be larger than the actual computers harddrive? Is there anything I can do to rectify this issue without me needing to purchase a larger external harddrive for back up?

That means you're trying to back up about 865 GB to a 1 TB drive; and that's not large enough for Time Machine.
Time Machine not only keeps copies of everything currently on your Mac, but also previous copies of things you've changed or deleted, so it needs a lot more space than the data it's backing-up.
What's causing your immediate problem is, TM adds about 20% to the estimated size of the backup, for workspace on the TM drive and in case the estimate is too small.  So 865 GB + 173 GB = over 1 TB.
Long-term, you need a much larger drive for Time Machine, at least 1.5 TB, probably 2 TB.
Short-term, you can squeeze your backups onto the 1 TB drive by excluding some big stuff per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #10 and running a backup.
Then remove the exclusion, and run another backup.  Since the second backup will be much smaller, the additional 20% won't be so large as to exceed the size of the TM drive.
But TM won't be able to keep backups very long, and if it needs to do a large backup, there may not be room.

  • Initial time machine backup larger than the original

I have been using time machine with a 1 TB time capsule without issue on a older Macbook in the house. I just got a Macbook pro and am attempting to backup on the same time capsule. During setup, Time machine states there is 118GB to back up when looking under options (which is correct). Then when it goes to back up after "processing" it states that it is backing up 330gb (larger than my harddrive of 250GB). I took off about 167 GB of files off the time capsule. I erased the backup file on time capsule and started over. It still says that there is correctly 118GB to back up before it starts but now after processing it says it will be backing up 163 GB. (330GB-167GB=163GB) Of note there is 45GB of other stuff including the backup of the other Mac still on the time capsule. (163GB-45GB=118 GB.) It appears to be calculating to re-back-up what is already stored on the time capsule. How do I deal with this issue?

Your backup drive has been use to backup both computers. TM may think it should still be backing up both computers. If both computers are on the TC network that would be the normal expectation.
If that's not the case but you've given the new computer the same Computer Name as the old computer, then TM may be trying to backup files that are non-existent but still located in the backup set. If this is the case, then reformat the TC.

  • Initial Time Machine backup never finishes

I started the first backup and left my macbook on over night to let it continue. I had tried to sync it via an ethernet cable but for some reason it won't backup any way other than via wireless. It recognises that there is a connection via cable but still won't sync that way so I let it use the wireless link. However, someone managed to turn off the power to the time capsule later on and I had to continue the backup the next day. It said it had about 22.9gb left to go but seems to stick at 13.1 of 22.9gb. That message is in the main window but the small box at the bottom says 3.7mb of 3.7mb and never seems to close or finish.
Is there a way to get it to disgard all backups it may have done (i.e. reformat it) and make it start again so I can try for an uninterrupted backup?

Same here. I have a 120 Gb HFS+ HD hooked to my AEBS, The drive mounts, the disk image mounts, Time Machine recognize the drive and starts its first backup but hangs always about 5.23 - 6 Gb done with an error message.
    Wassup????

  • Initial Time Machine Backup never ends

    Hi all folks,
I try to backup my PB12 Disc (120 GB) to a external 500 GB Disc, connected via FW400, but the backup never ends, I think.
The backup starts with 100MB/min but after 20h (80GB are store to a external Disc) it slow down to 1MB/min.
With the "Activity Monitor" I see only some disc activities and a "mds" and "mdworker" process use some cpu time only (more than 10%).
Where can I get some detail information, a log file, about the Time Machine activity from.
    Thanks for any help,
    Lutz

    Hi all folks,
the initial Backup ends after 2 days (nice to to see, :-(),
but on the boot volume I can go the time walk only.
I split my disc into two partitions, sorry.
    Bye, Lutz
    p.s.
With CCC I spend 4-6 hours to back up my disks only (100GB).

  • Initial Time Machine Backup - Extremely Slow/Freeze

    Hello,
I recently switched my external HDDs and began utilizing a different HDD in conjunction with Time Machine. I have used this HDD in the past with Time Machine and never had a problem. The initial backup is proceeding at an extremely slow rate and often freezes - as of writing, it is currently standing at 125.3MB of 1.07TB - About 1,172 days. I have erased and reformatted the drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), tested data transfer rates to it by transferring files myself (normal rate), repaired permissions, verified my disks, tried the initial backup while spotlight was off and have forced a spotlight re-index, allowing it to go to completion before attemtping a backup - however, no solution has thus far worked. I have not made any large changes to my computer since I switched the HDDs either.
Does anybody know what could be causing such a problem and how to fix this? Many thanks for any help,
    - Cptbigt

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
