Initial time machine backup to Time Capsule failed unexpectedly

Hi everyone,
New MacBook Pro retina, clean install of Mountain Lion, no previous backup to 1 TB third-generation Time Capsule (I deleted the previous .sparsebundle file because it had grown too large). Power Nap enabled in Energy Saver. The initial backup stopped:

Why?

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
LaCie drive software
VirusBarrier
I suggest you uninstall them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault. "VirusBarrier" is harmful and should not be reinstalled in any case.
If there's no improvement after making the suggested changes, post again.

  • Time Capsule failing backup after first initial install.

I got a new Time Capsule from Apple due to the last one deciding to fail. Anyway the new Time Capsule has backed up once and since has not backed up at all. Its showing as a green light and I can connect to see what's inside (so I can see the first backup) but it just keeps saying "Preparing Backup" when trying to do another back-up. I have left it for days, next to the Time Capsule and have attached a cable and tried that way but nothing.
Must admit I am getting pretty fed up with the Time Capsule. This is the second one that's been terrible. Please help or its being sold for something else!!! Thanks!

It's not necessarily the Time Capsule. See #D1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Initial time capsule/time machine backup

Just bought time capsule and am in process of backing up my files with time machine it says I have 86 gb to backup up. Now how long can I expect it will take to complete? Am I able to use my MacBook during the process? Is it normal to see the desktop folder on top of all the other windows and the stars moving indicates that it's currently backing up my files correct?
    Thanks very much!
    Eric

Thank you for the response. I have a couple more questions.
    1. Is there a way to manually go through the files? I used to be able to when it was backing up locally through USB.
    2. If I change the folder name of the location of the Time Machine backups, do I have to start my backups all over again?
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine and Time Capsule - Failing with Network Problem

My problems with TM/TC have been ongoing for a couple of months now and I am going round in circles - need help.
This is the second post I have made, the first got lost in people suggesting the obvious - so I will try to be a little more specific if I can.
I will detail the current state first - i.e. where I am now - after I will list what I have done so far to get to this point.
Currently, my iMac (intel) is directly connected by Ethernet 1GB to the Time Capsule. The TC is then connected to a Netgear router which in turn is connected to Internet.
I have no network problems at all - internet connection is fine. the Netgear Router has the latest firmware version and is working fine. The porblems i have are nothing to do with this.
The time Capsule is in Bridge mode and getting a reserved dhcp IP address from the Netgear router.
The Time Capsule has been fully reset - i.e. power cable out, hold the reset button, plug in power cable (spark, spark), hold reset button, fast blink for 20 seconds or so, light goes out, release button.
I have re-applied the latest Time Capsule firmware.
I have renamed the disk on the Time Capsule.
I have renamed my iMac and deleted all the time capsule entries from Keychain.
I have re-installed Mac OSX and re-updated to the latest 10.5.6 release.
At the moment I have kicked off a backup with a lot of large files - like music folder, video folder etc excluded. I also have parallels and have excluded the disk image. I have 1 other 50GB disk image which is also excluded.
I am expecting the first initial backup will complete successfully.
I will then remove music and video from exclusions and allow them to backup. I am expecting this will complete no problem. (I do this because the upcoming problem will happen if I move away from the machine - and I dont want to sit there for 2 days).
So up to this point TM and TC have performed flawlessly. The issue that follows started happening before the 10.5.6 update after backing up with no issues for months. At this point I will be able to use TM to browse the backup and restore files. I will be able to mount the sparse bundle and browse files. Spotlight reports no issues and indexes quickly.
If I leave my machine after a successful backup and the hourly update kicks in it will fail with 'A Network problem' basically saying the backup has filed because of a network problem, but is not any more specific, logs show far too much to put the whole thing here, but the following is an excerpt

It goes on and on and is repeated every hour. For each one I get an error message on screen saying backup failed due to a network error. However I have tried a manual download over the same period set at an extremely slow rate so that it was downloading during this time and it showed no errors. I.e. the network connection from imac, through TC to netgear and out to internet - and monitored this while time machine showed these errors (i.e. at the same time) and this showed no connection problems at all and completed succesfully.
I know TM uses an internal address to do backups, but uses the same cable and network card to get the job done. I am simply removing the cable as a source of issue although I have also replaced this making no difference.
Applecare are involved and have so far been sent 2 sets of logs and so far have not been able to find the cause. New TC is on its way to try that, although they think it is something on the imac that is causing this.
Sleep mode is turned off although screen sleep is on. The tick is not in the box for putting hard drives to sleep whenever possible.
Now, after this has happened, and back at the machine. I restart both imac and TC. Try running a backup, spotlight starts to re-index - i.e. will mount the backup volume and start the index process, gets to about 90% then fails - again excerpts from log

Am I the only one having these problems? any help from anybody please...

Got the same problem with a 3 months old TC.
The replacement TC, does it work now flawless?

  • Time capsule failing to backup

    Hi.
I am having a weird problem with my Time Capsule.  Apple does not seem to want to help; they say that I am using the Time Capsule in an unsupported configuration.
    Can anybody help here??
In short, I am using the Time Capsule (TC) as a network storage device only.  It's RF is turned off and it is in bridge mode, so it is not offering DHCP or DNS, etc.  It is on my home network.  I used ONLY the standard Apple Airport Utility to configure the TC.
The TC is running 7.6.3 and my Mac is an Macbook Pro with Retina display, 16 GB memory, with 750 GB solid state disk running OS X 10.8.3.
The symptom is that, after the TC is initialized, I connect my Mac via Cat5 Ethernet and start the backup.  It backs up fine and will continue its periodic backup for sometime; could be two days or several weeks.  Then, it fails with a popup (see below).
I have power cycled, tried different network connections, reset the TC, reloaded the OS, and its even a new Mac and a new TC.  Oh, my first TC is running like a champ, in the exact same configuration (different IP's, of course), and supporting my wife's and daughter's Macs - same version of Mac OS X.  I have factory reset the TC and had this recur more than a dozen times.
There have been a number of open tickets during which the Apple Support people would send me the Data Capture application; I would run it, send them the data and then never heard back from them.  This has happened twice.  This last week, while in between consulting gigs, I dedicated some time to this and was told by one of the Apple support people that it is an unsupported configuration.  They say the device has to be the main router, and the first router behind a cable modem (or BHR, as in the case of FiOS).  I went nuts.  No standards compliant device should care.
So, as a last resort, before I toss this thing out the window (saving the hard drive, of course), I come to the people here for ideas or others' experiences.  My view is that the device should not care where it is in the network hierarchy.
The details, including the log output (which the Apple guy today did not even want to see because it was a non-standard configuration) is all below.
I would really appreciate the help!

Wednesday, with the guidance of Apple Support, I reset my 3TB Time Capsule.  I brought it up and configured it as above.  I want the TC to be on my existing home network as a network-attached storage for my Macbook backups.  I have a second, older 1TB Time Capsule configured exactly the same except for name and IP address, of course, that supports my wife's and daughter's Macbooks.  This has been running without problem.
Backups had been running seemingly fine since March 20 afternoon after this.
Through Thursday early afternoon, it had been running fine.   When I logged back in (screen saver protection) sometime after 5PM this afternoon, I saw the following pop-up:

    LaPastenague,
Thanks for taking the time.  I shall review what you wrote and check out the references.
You are right in that I shouldn't have put that full log in.  I guess I wanted to show that things were working.
So, here's the log of the failing backup session, somewhat annotated:
Here's the normal backup session startup:
    3/21/13 4:04:39.173 PM com.apple.backupd[23914]: Starting automatic backup
    3/21/13 4:04:39.507 PM com.apple.backupd[23914]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Armando%20Stettner;[email protected]/apsTCdisk

    3/21/13 4:05:02.930 PM com.apple.backupd[23914]: Disk image /Volumes/apsTCdisk/apsMacbook.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups
Remove volume on the TC is now mounted.  Time Machine starts looking for the work to be done.
    3/21/13 4:05:02.934 PM com.apple.backupd[23914]: Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
3/21/13 4:05:05.834 PM com.apple.backupd[23914]: Using file event preflight for aps Macbook

    3/21/13 4:05:10.393 PM com.apple.backupd[23914]: 2.38 GB required (including padding), 2.53 TB available
Now, Time Machine knows what it has to backup and that there's enough space on the TC available for the backup.
And now, the Error.  This seems to be the beginning of the end. It seems there were 5 file access problems of some sort.  To me, this looks like it was trying to access file/data from the remotely mounted Time Capsule and it failed for some reason.

  • Trouble with initial Time Capsule backup

I have just installed Time Capsule, and attempted the initial backup. The initial backup always fails with the error message "disk image cannot be created". After this failure, the "Airport Utility" will not recognise the Time Capsule, although the Time Capsule continues with a green light and the internet connection still works through Time Capsule. I have to reset Time Capsule for "Airport Utility" to recognise it again each time the backup fails with the error message above. Any ideas on how to correct the error and do the intial backup?
    Thanks

    -New to Mac-
I switched this year after using WIN for years.
I cannot get my Time Capsule to work. I tried everything in the 'forums', re-booted several times, changed the name of the Capsule, re-set, unplugged, used paper clips etc. I thought MAC's just 'worked' too. Not so far. I'm confident I will get it working even if I have to call Apple but I thought I'd read the fixes here first.
I can see the drive in the finder. I have moved iTunes files over to the Time Cap so it's saving other files but I keep getting a 'unable to mount' message when I try to do a backup. Even deleted the 'sparse' bundle file (can't delete one of the files, 'bands' in use message) but still no worky.
Still convinced Mac is a better system. Just put off on not being able to backup my MacBookPro...Not to mention the 300 bucks for the Time Capsule...

  • Time Machine backups start and then fail!

Time machine had a single successful (ethernet-connected) backup up to a new 2TB time capsule. But subsequent backups began to fail. I did a quick erase of the TC, reset the machine and began again...with no luck. I connected my wife's macbook to the same ethernet connection and asked time machine to backup, which is did. After scanning through the Pondini Q&As, I'm still not sure what's happening - I believe the failure to be in time machine and not with the time capsule. I ran Onyx for permission repairs, etc.
Here's the error report from the time machine widget:
No pre-backup thinning needed: 130.74 GB requested (including padding), 1.81 TB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
    2013-01-06 17:01:28.092 ReportCrash[873:1407] Saved crash report for backupd[852] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/backupd_2013-01-06-170127_localhost.crash
How can I figure out what's causing the crash and how to repair it?

If you wish to exclude anything from the backup simply drag the item into the Exclude list. For example, you can save considerable space by excluding the /System/ folder. Cache files would be found in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ folders. Each folder contains a folder named Caches. There is no specific folder in which temporary items as stored that is visible to the user because the operating system will usually delete temporary files on its own. This may not be the case for a specific program, however. Browsers may maintain their own reserved cache and temporary files, and manage them on their own.
I do not think, however, that TM backs up caches or temporary files. I find no such items in my TM backup - only the folders. I do not back up my /System/ folder.

  • HT1176 Initial Time Capsule backup on MacBook Pro that doesn't have an Ethernet port

I just got a 3TB time capsule and am trying to backup my MacBook Pro. The initial process is very slow, but my MacBook doesn't have an Ethernet port. How can I connect the time capsule to the MacBook Pro to make the initial backup go more quickly?

A very good investment to make would be......

Why Apple chose to leave off the most important port in networking is a mystery.

  • Time Capsule Failing Backup Part Way Through

My TC is constantly failing backup part way through but only when I'm backing up my MBP.  It finishes fine when backing up my iMac.  The solution proposed in the error message, to repair backup disk via Disk Utility, doesn't work as the Airport/TC doesn't appear on Disk Utility.
I can see the TC via Airport Utility and it all looks to be working fine.  I have a external HD attached to the Airport and can access that fine.
Any ideas as it's now a while since I've been able to back up.
    Thanks

The solution proposed in the error message, to repair backup disk via Disk Utility, doesn't work as the Airport/TC doesn't appear on Disk Utility.
Unfortunately, the error message leaves out some details, things like the fact that you have drag the sparsebundle file containing your backups into the Disk Utility window to repair them. More info from the great Pondini is here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/A5b.html
If you run Repair Disk several times and problem continues, the only real option at that point is to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with backups.

  • 29 days! Initial time capsule backup!!!

I have 315GB to backup via Time Capsule.  I have ethernet connected,  Mac Pro to time capsule.
Question 1) How do I know it is using the ethernet connection? The app called "Network utility" says both ethernet ports are "active".  "activity Monitor" says little cpu is being used and very, very slow "Network" xfer rate.
Question 2) Why so slow?  In 4 hours it says it has moved only 1.68GB.  A 1Gb ethernet port should move 315GB in about 42 minutes (maxport speed).   Can the Mac software, Mac Pro and Time capsule, dumb it down to 29 days?
It took 8 hours  to back up 20GB on my Mini Mac.   So (315/20)*8 = 5.25 days.  Even 5 days is slower then **** but 29days?
I believe that when I didn't have the ethernet connected time capsule said it would take 42 days.
What is going on?  It still says 1.68GB moved across.  It said that before typing this message.

  • HT3728 time capsule fails on backups

    did hard reset
time machine wants me to use disk utility to repair
however NO image appears in disk image
    whats up??????????

After about an hour and a half phone session with the apple tech experts, they couldnt find the solution. I got it set up to "create new wireless" in the end, I just chose "not ready to connect to the internet". This way I could connect the time capsule wirelessly with the computer (make sure it was working). Today, I started the configuration again, did manual setup, chose "extend existing wireless" and it worked!!. I dont know why or how but it worked. So, you can try do the same. It may work for you too!

  • Time Capsule Fails Backing Up (even after months of it working)

Ive run across this numerous times over different macs (24 inch, 27 inch, air...) on every official os supported (snow leopard, lion)
I set up time capsule initially and it works great.
After what could be months, it will error out (backup failed).
It finds the drive and manually initiating a backup fails as well.
Funny things is it says something to the effect of "backup requires 9.gb, Only 3gb available" or something...
I thought this thing deleted old backups as needed?
Why does this always happen given time to allow it to happen?
I have 2tb TC with only 1 TB hd on the current mac.... double the space yet given enough time it will always happen.
The only way to get it to start doing what its supposed to do is format and start over... and Im really over doing that.
I have excluded all the folders I can. If I keep excluding folders so that it will backup, whats the point?
Does anyone have answers or knowledge on the following:
    1. Why would it stop working over time? Even if I add a large file to the mac, shouldnt it "make room" for the new file by deleting old backups?
    2. How can the backups equal more than the entire HD? I understand it takes snapshots but if a file is deleted off the mac, shouldnt that reflect in the backup over time and be deleted as well?
    3. Most importantly, how can I get this to start working properly again without reformatting and starting over or excluding yet another folder?
Thank you so much for any assistance anyone may have on this.

Perhaps I can help with a misunderstanding on one point and others more knowledgable can jump in on some other points.
The snapshot always saves whatever is different. That is the whole idea, that files you are adding to the hdd in the Mac are copied to the backup. They are not deleted from the backup because you deleted it from the Mac.. the idea of a snapshot is to preserve an accurate record of all files at that point. Time Machine is designed to help when you accidentally erase a file.. or make a mistake.. or a file is corrupted.. so you need to go back to an earlier revision of the file. So by design TM is working as incremental backup device.
If you have a large amount of your 1TB full, and you are shifting files, of 3 or 9GB which you list in the problem description, and those files are being moved around often.. even changing their names. The whole file will be backed up every time Time Machine runs. Eventually it runs out of space.
    3. To answer why it doesn't just delete the older backups I am really unsure. That is the design of the software, and it should delete older backups to make room for new ones. Let me suggest a change of strategy based on the above. Files that you are constantly moving around put them into an excluded directory, assuming you don't need them backed up. Make sure you reserve the TC for TM and don't put other stuff on the disk.. perhaps using too much space for copied files.. if you do that.. the TM cannot remove those files and runs out of a small enough backup to delete without affecting something else.

  • External Drive attached to Time Capsule failing to work consistently

This problem has been occurring since we started using an external drive attached to our Time Capsule as a backup destination for Time Machine over a year ago:
Everything will be fine for a few days or weeks, but at some point backups stop working. This sometimes gives errors (Time Machine could not complete backup, I think) or sometimes it just looks like the backup has gotten stuck (reporting 235.32 MB of 22.86 GB for days). With the latter problem it seems to cause other issues with the OS like System Preferences not responding anymore and certain Save As... dialog boxes not appearing.
Every time this happens, what I do is disconnect all users through AirPort Utility and then plug the drive into one of the computers and run Disk Utility on it.
Each time, without fail, there is the error "Incorrect number of Access Control Lists" stating it should be 0 and it really is something in the thousands usually.
The volume is always repaired successfully, but then the cycle continues.
We've tried a couple of different drives and it always ends up happening.
I've seen other posts with similar problems, but nothing laid out exactly like my problem, and no real fix for it.

Yes, indeed. Let me give some background.
I have an old Gigabit AEBS (7.4.2) as my main router with a Gigabit connection to my Time Capsule (500GB, 7.4.2) running in bridge mode. Both run as wireless access points for my network "Hogwarts." I backup several machines to the TC's internal drive with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Practically bulletproof. I backup two media heavy machines to the external drive attached to the TC. The drive is a Western Digital My Book 1.5TB that before the TC came into our lives, ran flawlessly when attached to my iMac as a backup destination. The media machines are Dumbledore, my mini running as a HTPC, and Tonks, my wife's laptop busting with pics and video of our son. Once I started backups to this drive connected to the TCs, I started to have problems with backup. That's the situation. Here's what I've tried to correct it.
I had a year's worth of backups. Went to the Genius Bar who recommended starting over after they checked out my setup over Back to My Mac. They couldn't find anything wrong and supposed my backups were hopelessly corrupted. So I followed their advice with Dumbledore and archived those for Tonks. Trying to start over with Dumbledore fails within the first 75 of 500 GB to backup every time. I've redirected syslog reporting at Debug level from the TC to my iMac and formatted the external drive several times. I have done disk repairs on the drive, Dumbledore's sparse bundle, and the TM volume contained in the sparse bundle. I've only gotten the "too many ACL's" error. The WD drive comes with SmartWare software I've used to check the S.M.A.R.T. status (100% OK), test the drive (100% OK) and deactivate the Virtual CD partition used to, among other things, encrypt the drive. My drive is unencrypted and have made it as plain vanilla as I can: GUID with one 1.5 TB Mac OS Extended Journaled partition.
What I've noticed when I check the status of the TC when the bakcups fail is that the drive becomes unmounted with no logged error. The client computer either hangs Finder or reports the backup failed. My wife has become so frustrated with hard restarts that she has turned off Time Machine until I fix this. Airport Utility simply no longer sees the drive. The client computer can reconnect over AFP but the drive will not be accessible unless I restart the TC. Then if I do some Disk Utility repairs on the external drive and on the virtual volumes it contains, I can start backups again...until the next spontaneous unmounting of the drive. Which leaves me talking to you as a completely frustrated and disappointed Apple user. This is so not Apple quality experience.
The only shot in the dark I've seen is that the TC repeatedly updates its DHCP lease every 5 minutes or so despite having a 4 hour TTL. Weird.

  • Restore from Time Capsule fails

I'm trying to restore from my Time Capsule backup over ethernet. I've tried with two different cat5e cables, but each time it goes extremely slowly, (it only gets to .4% after an hour and says it'll take 600 hours). After about an hour it fails and this is the crash log:

Okay, I did what you said and I'm currently transferring files using Migration Assistant. Currently it's 10:40, and the Migration Assistant has been on this screen for over an hour: http://tyznik.com/misc/migration.png I opened up the console and this is the last message in the console:
    7/5/10 9:00:59 PM [0x0-0xe00e].com.apple.MigrateAssistant[142] 2010-07-05 21:00:59.505 MigrateTool[151:4207] SltFS(off) : (/private/var/db/shadow/hash/5FA3CF8B-0705-4390-95B9-BA7D8C782900) on sys (/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Purple Hoohaa/2010-07-04-161204/Macintosh HD) --> /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Purple Hoohaa/2010-07-04-161204/Macintosh HD/private/var/db/shadow/hash/5FA3CF8B-0705-4390-95B9-BA7D8C782900
Which is almost two hours ago, and the messages were coming every second or two before that. I'm not sure what the problem is this time.
That is a bit odd. The file it's referring to (/private/var/db/shadow/hash/xxx) is in a hidden system folder at the top level of your internal HD.
In my installation, /private/var/db/shadow/ is an empty folder, so I have no idea what it is.
Although when I open SystemMigration.log, these lines are updating:
    2010-07-05 22:52:36 -0400 (Nop) throughput = 0.628692 MB/s. (+ 2041 files)
so I take that to mean it's copying files.
Looks like it, and the timestamp is after the previous one.
Is that a normal throughput, though?
Hard to tell. I haven't done a large migration in quite a while (not since Leopard, I think), and I wasn't watching the log.
How much data was on your system? Deduct perhaps 10 GB for OSX, and a few more for Applications. See how long that would take at about 20 GB/hr.
I'd let it alone for quite a while (longer than 20 GB/hr). But if you decide it's hung, cancel it and see how far it got.
You should be able to figure out where it was when it hung, and start over with the next top-level folder, then work on the missing items later.
But before you start again, repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Hang in there. You are making progress, whether it feels like it or not.
It's getting late here, and I'll be going to bed in a while, so if you post after that, I won't answer until tomorrow.
    But do keep us posted.

  • Time Capsule fail to connect in Finder

Upon system bootup - I can see the Time Capsule drive as a "shared" drive in the Finder application. However, it doesn't automatically connect. The status reads "Connection Failed".
The then have to press connect - a page loads that asks for a password. It then connects and the backups work...however, it never remembers my password.
    Question:
    1. Is there an issue with my setup...in order to get it to automatically connect at the system start?
    2. Why doesn't the forced connection remember my password?
Thank you...this Time Capsule is not been an smooth experience. Apple should test this stuff...

Do I delete under the Keychain "Login" or "System" folder?
Also, do I delete both of these files
    1. Time Capsule Network Password
    2. Time Capsule Airport Base Station Password
    Thank you!
