Initial Time machine backup was interrupted
I interrupted my initial Time Machine backup. How do I reinstate the initial backup?
Turn off TM, erase the external with Disk Utility, turn on TM and re-select the external HD.

Initial Time machine backup to Time capsule results in kernel panic
I recently purchased a Retina display MacBook Pro (running Lion at the time) and transferred the data from an external hard drive with my Time Machine backups from my previous MBP. I also bought a new Time Capsule.
The first time I tried to back up to the Time Capsule from the Retina MBP via an ethernet connection it got to 40GB of 140GB before it shut down from a kernel panic. Interestingly, the Time Machine backup was successful when I used the external hard drive I was previously using for my Time Machine backups (connected via USB).
I don't think there is an issue with the Time Capsule because Finder can locate the Time Capsule and I can copy and paste files from the Macintosh HD to the Time Capsule disk.
I've done the following steps in order to try and fix the problem:
1. Repair permissions
2. Verify and Repair Macintosh HD
3. Updated the operating system to Mountain Lion (at which point I successfully completed a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive I was using for Time machine backups but was unable to backup to the Time Capsule without the computer crashing from a kernel panic)
4. Used Airport Utility to erase the sparse disk image bundle that had been created on the Time Capsule then tried to back up via ethernet to the time capsule - kernel panic ensued at 40GB of 140GB
5. Used Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and re-installed Mountain Lion. Transferred data from the external hard drive Time Machine backup from step 3.
6. Erased the sparse disk image bundle on the Time Capsule again.
7. Tried to backup to the Time Capsule again via Ethernet - kernel panic.
For each of the attemtps to back up to the Time Capsule I've used a different ethernet cable (Cat 5 and 5e) and plugged it into a different ethernet port on the Time Capsule each time. I've also tried using both Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor).
I'm out of ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas!!

How long should an initial time machine backup of tack for 675 GB?s with a USB external hard drive?
Not much faster than 40 GBs-60GBs per hour. So, minimally, around 12 hours.

Initial Time Machine Backup Stuck on "Indexing Backup"
I have Mac Mini running 10.7.2. I just got an external hard drive and am trying to run an initial back up using Time Machine. I am running my computer in Safe Mode as it won't start in regular mode. I formatted the HD and began to run Time Machine back up. HD is connected via USB 2.0 wire.
It has now been 12 hours and is still on Indexing Backup... Is this normal for initial back up? I know it takes a long time for initial but this doesn't seem right.What do I do to correct if it isn't correct? Should I stop and try again?Thank you very much. With your info I gave up on the back up and ran Disk and Permission Repair for the 3rd or 4th time and crossed my fingers and restarted my machine and it WORKED! I ran time Machine back up and when I woke up this morning it was all done! Yeahhhh!
I wasn't sure what was causing it not to start in regular mode and as I'm not too much of a techie I was scared that I was teetetering on the brink of losing everything. The machine would run so I didn't think it was a hard drive issue, but not knowing for sure I was concerned and after losing everythign once before years ago, I was worried. I have it backed up on line but wanted a 2nd (local) version that wouldn't entail tying up bandwidth for days. In the end it worked out!
But the short answer is, Time Machine Backup does NOT work in Safe Mode... -
Initial Time Machine backup 60 GB smaller than HD content?

I've just performed an initial backup with TIme Machine on an external HD. The result is that TM's backup's size is 360 GB, but my internal HD that has 420 GB of data...
I had no problems during the backup, no warning messages. I don't understand, so I'm not very confortable pursuing with this backup.
The only explanation could be that I've a lot of duplicates on my iMac (2x big iTunes library with same files...) at the moment: does TM save only one copy of same files that are in different directories of the source HD?

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:

These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot. -
Initial Time Machine Backup with Time Capsule
Hello,
I just started to back everything up with Time Capsule and Time Machine. The backup is 45 GB so it's going to take a while. Two questions:
1. There is a Volume created on my Desktop called "Backup of [My Computer Name]". Is this supposed to happen?
2. In the actual drive, there is a Sparse file, not the usual backups.backupdb folder that is created when attaching a drive via USB. Is this supposed to be like that as well?

Clean installed Snow Leopard, but Lion Time Machine backup was not recognized.
I erased the Macintosh HD and clean installed the Snow Leopard. But when I try to use the Time machine backup to recovery my documents, the external hard disk can not even be recognized. It says "To use this disk, connect it to a Mac with Mac OS X v10.7 or later. The format of the disk was created using Lion which can not be read by Snow Leopard." The fact is that the format of the disk is Mac OS Extended (journaled) and was indeed created by Lion from windows format. So how can I read the disk using Snow Leopard? Thanks.
I it a general problem, affecting e.g. a Mac with multiple partitions. I get the same with trying to mount 10.7 from 10.6.8.

Yes, however it's always wise to update your apps to ensure you have the most up-to-date version. Use Setup Assistant to migrate your data, apps and settings to the new iMac, simply follow the on-screen directions. If the new machine has already arrived and you have already run Setup Assistant, connect the TM backup to the new machine and run Migration Assistant (a cousin of Setup Assistant) and follow the on-screen directions. You can find Migration Assistant in Applications - Utilities - Migrations Assistant or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Command + Spacebar and type "Migration Assistant".

Initial Time Machine Backup - Extremely Slow/Freeze
Hello,
I recently switched my external HDDs and began utilizing a different HDD in conjunction with Time Machine. I have used this HDD in the past with Time Machine and never had a problem. The initial backup is proceeding at an extremely slow rate and often freezes - as of writing, it is currently standing at 125.3MB of 1.07TB - About 1,172 days. I have erased and reformatted the drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), tested data transfer rates to it by transferring files myself (normal rate), repaired permissions, verified my disks, tried the initial backup while spotlight was off and have forced a spotlight re-index, allowing it to go to completion before attemtping a backup - however, no solution has thus far worked. I have not made any large changes to my computer since I switched the HDDs either.
Does anybody know what could be causing such a problem and how to fix this? Many thanks for any help,

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Initial time machine backup crashes Yosemite 10.10.3
I have a 15" Macbook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 running Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136). I previously had a 1TB Time Capsule that ran pretty much without a problem. I recently upgraded to a new 3TB time capsule (http://store.apple.com/us/product/ME182LL/A/airport-time-capsule-3tb) .
I have attempted numerous times to complete the initial backup both via wifi and hardwired into the thunderbolt port. It will run for an hour or so then just says (stopping). After that the computer gives me the pinwheel of death. After a restart everything runs fine and can restart process but same things happens. I have about 720GB to transfer so it takes a while (10 hrs or so). Every time I return it has stopped. I have erased and reinitialized the time capsule disk several times.These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created. -
Initial Time Machine Backup never ends
Hi all folks,
I try to backup my PB12 Disc (120 GB) to a external 500 GB Disc, connected via FW400, but the backup never ends, I think.
The backup starts with 100MB/min but after 20h (80GB are store to a external Disc) it slow down to 1MB/min.
With the "Activity Monitor" I see only some disc activities and a "mds" and "mdworker" process use some cpu time only (more than 10%).
Where can I get some detail information, a log file, about the Time Machine activity from.

but on the boot volume I can go the time walk only.
I split my disc into two partitions, sorry.

Initial time machine backup larger than actual computer harddrive
I've got an iMac with a 1TB harddrive and am trying to use a time machine set up to back up my harddrive. The external harddrive I'm using for my back up is also 1TB. I currently have about 135GB of free space on my iMac's harddrive and my external drive is completely empty. When I try to back up using time machine it tells me that the back up is 1.2TB and cannot fit on my 1TB external harddrive. What would cause the initial back up to be larger than the actual computers harddrive? Is there anything I can do to rectify this issue without me needing to purchase a larger external harddrive for back up?

That means you're trying to back up about 865 GB to a 1 TB drive; and that's not large enough for Time Machine.
Time Machine not only keeps copies of everything currently on your Mac, but also previous copies of things you've changed or deleted, so it needs a lot more space than the data it's backing-up.
What's causing your immediate problem is, TM adds about 20% to the estimated size of the backup, for workspace on the TM drive and in case the estimate is too small. So 865 GB + 173 GB = over 1 TB.
Long-term, you need a much larger drive for Time Machine, at least 1.5 TB, probably 2 TB.
Short-term, you can squeeze your backups onto the 1 TB drive by excluding some big stuff per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #10 and running a backup.
Then remove the exclusion, and run another backup. Since the second backup will be much smaller, the additional 20% won't be so large as to exceed the size of the TM drive.
But TM won't be able to keep backups very long, and if it needs to do a large backup, there may not be room. -
Initial Time Machine Backup Taking Too Long
I have 184 GB of data to backup. Time Machine is backing up about 1 MB of data every 30 secs. At that rate, it will take 64 days for the initial full backup to complete. That can't be right. Has anyone run into similar problems? Any advice?

Initial Time Machine Backup. Event Store UUIDs Don't Match.
This is an initial backup and 25% (about 100 GBs) of the backup completed in 1 Hour. The remaining 75% (about 300 GBs) is stuck at the same place for 9 hours now.
I'm working on a MBP Mid-2009 15", 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X 10.5.8.
All software is up-to-date.
Backup Drive is a Seagate 2GB (USB), Formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
No 3rd Party Backup Software or 3rd Party Security installed.
Spotlight has already been re-indexed.
Name of Computer is: MBP 2013
Time Machine Buddy indicates only that the Event Store UUIDs Don't Match. No error messages. Other discussion posts say wait. Any other suggestions? Is there a way to reset the Event Store UUIDs?Well, I dislike TM myself, never use it due to all it's quirks, & even IF it appears to work, when it comes time to use it/relly on it, you may find more quirks or nearly impossible to use.
If you wish o continue trying TM, I'll certainbly try to help, or even ask for help from others, but...

After printing display window still says "printing..."
using HP7310 office jet all inone can't print while this message "printing..." is still in display window on printer. Once it goes away after about 5 minutes I can print again. How do I fix this? Shane
