Initialization parameter won't stay set

Running into a stange issue for the first time. Anyone have ideas on what might be causing this?
DB - 10.2.0.4, Windows Sever 2008
Current setting for optimizercost_based_transformation = OFF. We want to set it to ON.
The following command is issue:
alter system set "_optimizer_cost_based_transformation"=on scope=both;
The database is bounced and the following is the result:
SQL> conn sys@uimdev as sysdba
Enter password: ***********
Connected.
SQL> alter system set "_optimizer_cost_based_transformation"=on scope=spfile;
System altered.
SQL> shutdown immediate
Database closed.
Database dismounted.
ORACLE instance shut down.
SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.

SQL> show parameter _optimizer
NAME TYPE VALUE
optimizercost_based_transformation string ON
HERES THE PROBLEM:
When any other session is opened, the parameter values show a value of OFF again. For example:
SQL> select name,value from v$parameter where name like '_opt%';
NAME                    VALUE
optimizercost_based_transformation     OFF
Anyone seen this type of behavior or know how to fix?
Thaks in advance for assistance....

Tony,
Have you reviewed the on-logon DB triggers?
The fact that you can see the hidden parameter in v$parameter means that someone/something sets it up (as opposed to using the default).
Since the value is not the one you have in the spfile, then there might be some other place it gets reverted to "OFF".
Hope that help,

  • Reminders won't stay set, say null or disappear

I am unable to get reminder app to work right anymore. As soon as I set a reminder the time date set either disappear or say (null) immediately. I have followed suggestions I have read on here and tried many things I hoped would work. Is anyone else still having this problem, I welcome any suggestions new or old, at this point I will try anything. (I have tried with and without  icloud turned on), it does it either way. Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • Fill setting won't stay set in CS5

When I use either the pencil tool or the brush tool, I cannot get the fill color to stay set. In other words, first I set the line color and then the fill color. Then I select the pencil or the brush tool. As I use the tool, both settings remain as I set them (i.e., the colors I have set), but as soon as the line is complete, the fill reverts to "no fill" (and there is no fill in the drawn image). I have tried doing this a dozen different ways (in the contol panel, in the appearances panel, etc.)....there does not seem to be any way to set the fill color for the line that WILL BE drawn. (I can go back and assign a fill after it has been drawn.) I have even created a "style" which includes a line color and a fill color. I select the style. Then I try to draw with the pencil or brush and when I do so, the style vanishes and I have no fill in my drawing. I have also tried trashing the preferences file. (This is not a problem with the pen tool, nor the rectangle tool etc.) Help!

In the Tool Panel double click on the pencil or brush tool to open the Options window, and select Fill new pencil (or brush) strokes.

  • My settings won't stay set as I set them in preferences pane os maverick . Can someone please help me.

Can anyone help me resolve a problem I've been having . When I open preference pane & set my personal settings ,i.e Dock settings ,display settings to the way I prefer it's fine while I'm using computer but when I shut down & the next day I start up the settings are back to where they were before I went near them .
This problem is really annoying as the idea with the preference pane is for my particular preference . Please can somebody help me resolve this very annoying problem , After all it is a MacBook Pro running the latest software . Thank you .

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • In Firefox 3.6.13, I've set the Smart Location feature to "Nothing" but the next time I start up Firefox it has reset the location bar to search "Bookmarks" ! This is very annoying that it won't stay set to do nothing.

I go to "Tools", "Options" and then "Privacy". At the "Location Bar" I set it to "Nothing" and then accept. The next time I restart my laptop from "Sleep", start up Firefox and start typing in a web address in the location bar it shows me the "Bookmark" stuff.

  • Finder View options won't stay set 10.7.2

Finder view options need resetting each time i log out or restart. How can i make them permanent?
Finder window has no locational or size memory, reverting to a default size and position on start up?
Any ideas how to fix this greatly appreciated

I finally know what causes folders to lose their view settings - even if you have set them to "Always open in..." a particular view (but I do not know how to fix it).
The trigger is setting any window to "column" view. Try it.
    (1) Create a new folder, and set it to your preferred view (but not column view). Close the folder and re-open it to verify that it is in the view you have set. You can even set it to "Always open in..." that view, if you like (it doesn't matter).
    (2) Now open up any other finder window or folder, and switch it to column view. If it is already in column view, switch it to some other view and then back to column view.
    (3) Now go back to the folder you created in step 1 and open it. Presto: column view. (Aargh!)
I confirmed this with a helpful and sympathetic Apple support staffer at the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store. Unfortunately, he had no solution, but noted it as an apparent bug in the 10.7 finder.
This is an extremely reliable behavior, that I have confirmed on 5 different machines all running 10.7.2. It is also an extremely frustrating behavior that I hope Apple fixes soon.

P.S. I will copy this to similar threads where this is being discussed, in hopes that it is helpful. Sometimes understanding why something happens can make it a little less frustrating, even if you don't know how to fix it.

  • Finder View options, won't stay set after restart or log out

I like to have my application and utility folders (in the finder side bar) open in icon view and arranged by name and my Home and Movies folder open in list view with files arranged by name.
Each time i log out of my computor or restart the view options i have mentioned are reset, which is extreamly frustrating.
I have also noticed that the finder window now opens in a small size in the middle of the screen rather than being aligned to the left hand side as like to have it set.
This problem has only occoured recently, i think after deleting some "relic" files using Cleanapp.
Any ideas on how i can sort this out greatly appreciated

  • MTU won't stay set to Jumbo (9000)

In the Advanced Ethernet setup, whenever I configure it to:
    Configure: Manually
    Speed: 1000baseT
    Duplex: full-duplex, flow-control
    MTU: Custom (9000)
After I save preferences several times as I close down the windows, whenever I open up the preferences again the last line has reverted to:
    MTU: Standard (1500)
I can program anything up to 9000 (7000, even 8999) and it remembers it fine. But if I enter in 9000 it resets it to 1500. Occasionally it will say "Jumbo (9000)", but if I close it after it's said that and open it again, it's back to "Standard (1500)".
This is ridiculous. Does anyone know what's causing this? I don't have any network optimizers running (as someone suggested in a similar thread) - it's a plain vanilla 2.4GHz iMac.
Can I force it in a config file somewhere? Does anyone know where this setting is stored?
    Cheers...

These are user-to-user discussions; Apple does not read them save to monitor for adherence to the Terms of Use.
If you believe you've found a bug, you can open a case with AppleCare, or create a free ADC Online account and report the issue using the Apple Bug Reporter.

If logged in as AD account, authenticating as local admin for sys pref change: I check the box for "proxy requires password", and enter the user and p/w, when I hit apply the box un-checks itself.

Hi dvatech, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I think it's one of two things...
Have you run Keychain First Aid?
More likely it's this file that is buggered...
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Unfortunately it holds tons of settings.

  • Color management setting wont stay set?

Running Acrobat Pro 9.4.1 in conjunction with CS5 Design Premium. Not only does the color management setting in Acrobat not change when set and synced from Bridge. The setting wont stick when set directly in Acrobat. Does anybody have a similar issue or a solution? I run Europe prepress 3 in bridge which has no effect on Acrobat but if I select Europe prepress 3 directly in Acrobat it will stay on that setting until I quit Acrobat then when re-launched it will be set to Europe Prepress 2! Any help or explanation much appreciated.

Guys I appreciate your help but nothing is working.
I tried deleting the preferences file and the same thing happened again anyway.
I then uninstalled the whole Creative Suite and deleted all files associated with it and all entries in the Windows Registry related to it.
I then reinstalled everything ( spending the hours it took) and it is doing the same thing again. I can not think of anything that has changed on the machine at all and I have never had this happen before in the years I have been using Premiere.
Everything used to work fine and Captures would go without a hitch even if they took hours as long as the Preferences were set to “None” on Device Control. But now it just won’t stay set, even after reinstalling everything. The Capture Window Device Control will stay set to “none” but not Preferences regardless of what I do.
I tried changing other Preference Settings and they stay changed but not device control. And it is the same regardless of whether the ADVC-300 is on or off. I even tried deactivating the Firewire Port in the Bios just to see what would happen and it made no difference.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
My last option is to reformat my drive and reinstall everything from scratch but that will take me a day and a half.
I can not understand what is making it do this when it never did it before.
Here is what I am using:
Premiere Pro CS4 with a Canopus ADVC-300 Capture Box. It is installed via Firewire and goes to the Firewire  Port on the Motherboard.
I am using XP Home SP3 on a Core I7 Computer with an Asus motherboard.
If no one has any ideas do me one favor. Go into your own Preferences file and set Device Control to “None”, close the panel and open it again to see if it is still set to none.
It may help me feel a little better about reinstalling all my software and spending the day and a half doing it if I know it is something with my machine and not the program itself.

  • Device Control wont stay set to none

I am using Premiere CS4 with a Canopus ADVC-300 capture device.
I have used this for years and never had a problem with Premiere providing  I set Device Control to “none” both in the Preferences and the capture window.
My problem is I can’t get the Device Control in the Preferences box to stay set to “None” any longer. I can set it and then close the window and check back and it insists on going back to the “DV/HDV” setting.  I have changed it to none at least a dozen times and it keeps setting itself back to “DV/HDV”.
This crashes the capture every time.
Any ideas on how to get it to stay where I set it?
It stays set to “none” in the capture window but I can not make the preferences menu do the same.
I can reinstall the program but that is a last resort due to the time it takes.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Contacts photos won't stay where you set the pic

Hey I'm on a iPhone 6 plus ios8 and every time I set a contact photo to a specific place on the photo and hit done the circle always centers itself on the photo when save and won't stay on the part of the photo I choose. Does anyone have a fix or any input on this??? Would definitsly appr it.

Thanks for the idea John, but no go. I was talking about the iPhoto Trash. I moved the photos I wanted to delete there and then emptied the Trash.
Per your suggestion I moved the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" from Preferences to Mac Trash (didn't empty Mac Trash because I was afraid I would lose the entire Library). When I copied the album to a new folder on my hard drive the photo I thought I had deleted re appeared. I put "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" back into Preferences just to play it safe.
Any other ideas on where the little buggers might be hiding and how I can get rid of them?

  • Setting new APN and it won't stay?

I inserted new Sim in my iPad2 for temporary internet access in Japan (b-mobile). the last process after activation phone call is to set new APN. I tried typing exactly what the service provider told me but the new APN won't stay, as in when I finished and went back to cellular data, then to APN settings again, there were nothing. Can you help me understand this situation? It seems that the activation with the service provider has nothing wrong. Perhaps it's to do with iOS 7.0.4?
When I googled, the window 'PDP Aithentification failure' popped up. Please help.

  • "Use iCloud" setting won't stay on for Pages

I am experiencing the same problem on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s. I am attempting to utilize Pages with iCloud. iCloud is functioning fine; calendar events are syncing across all events, backups are being made, etc.
However, I can turn "Use iCloud" on within Settings > Pages on BOTH devices. The option stays on, until I open Pages on that device. Then, it automatically reverts to off, whether I create or edit a document within Pages or not. I've tried every combination imaginable of killing both apps, enabling "Use iCloud," restarting device before launching Pages, etc. But the problem persists on both devices. Needless to say, nothing is syncing. I have "Documents & Data" on within iCloud settings.
Has anyone else seen this issue, or can anyone shed some light on it?
    Thanks for reading.

Solution found. I apologize for creating this trhead. Didn't see this solution until "More like this" displayed while re-reading my question.
