Initializing fonts
Lately i've noticed that everytime i open a doculent in photoshop i get that annoying "Initializing Fonts" dialog that sometimes lasts for a good minute. I use extensis suitcase and i have a clean fonts folder on my PC running windows 8. How can i stop this. I have no corrupt fonts, i am a designer that keep a very clean font system. This is a recent issue, never did this before..
What does Extensis have to say about this?

Shuts down at initializing fonts.
The program just shuts down without error on the fonts initializing stage. I have tried deleting prefrences. I have tried looking for fontinfo.txt in the Configuration folder, it wasn't there. I tried erasing the missfont.map and making missfont.map read-only. I tried deactivating and putting all non-windows fonts in the recycle bin. None of these solutions worked.
This is coming from a fresh install of the trial version of Adobe Flash Professional cs6.
Please help me on this issue.

also, you could uninstall flash, run the cleaner (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html), restart your computer and re-install flash. -
Howdy all! Have a tricky question. Using LiveCycle ES 8.2
Working on a form, I've got a pair of linked text fields (global data linked).
These text fields are static in size, but I need the values typed into them to shrink when it fills up the visible area of the text field. I can't set the value font size to 0pt from the start. It makes the initial font size too big for the value. The font size needs to remain at 16 pt until the value fills up the field's visible area, then it needs to switch over to 0pt (hence triggering a full event).
I've tried using a full event with the following code;
this.font.size = "0pt";
But it won't fire. I wonder if there is a limitation to the what the full event can trigger. I can use the change event or even the exit event if I have to.
I've also tried a calculate event with the following script:

this.font.size = "0pt";
else {
this.font.size = "16pt";
But this did not fire as well. And yes, I have the scripting set to Javascript...not Formcalc.

Using ES3 and just a 0 font initially (with all scripting removed) I get the following, for a short name;
Which seems about the right.

There have been some changes since ES8, including a default font size added to the form properties, but not sure that is a factor as the largest font used in this sample is still smaller than the default.

Fonts not showing up in InDesign CS4?
Hi,
Newbie here, so any wisdom from the voices of experience is greatly appreciated.
I just upgraded from CS2 to CS4, and several fonts that worked fine in CS2 do not even show up in CS4 (!). I'm working with Mac OSX and I'd really like to know if anyone has any constructive suggestions. I've done some poking around online and it seems I'm not the only one who's encountered this little issue, but it also seems that others have been unsuccessful in resolving it. Can anyone provide some insight?

The fonts I'm trying to work with are foreign language fonts that don't appear anywhere on the font list (trust me-I've looked!).
Well, if you've really looked through the whole list, you already know that foreign-language fonts usually show up at the end of the list, in categories that are ostensibly by language. Some of them do not show up in their pre-ordained language category; massive Unicode roll-ups of many scripts often show up with the Latin-script fonts or the Thai fonts (???).
I'm the complex-script DTP wonk in a translation firm that specializes in refugee languages; chances are that I've already encountered the fonts you're trying to install, at some point in the last decade. If I haven't, I know someone who has done so. You really should post the names of the fonts, so I can tell you if I know anything about them, tricks to install them, and so on.
As far as how the fonts were installed-I'm not sure how they got here initially (fonts are a great mystery to me), but they show up in my Fontbook in the "Computer" collection but not the "User" collection. Could that have something to do with my problem?
Uh, maybe. I doubt it, though. You could find out by
1) Finding out where the actual font files are.
2) Copying them to your desktop, or someplace where Mac OS can't get to 'em.
3) Uninstall them from Fontbook. (I don't have a Mac with that version of Mac OS installed; I'll look when I'm at home to see if I can give you step-by-step instructions, or you can Google for instructions.)
4) Put the font files in your /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/Fonts folder.
For fonts that Mac OS doesn't like, this is the most reliable way to get them working. But really, post the names of the fonts and I'll probably be able to tell you all about using them for typesetting in InDesign. -
As the start of another weeks dawns and most of us come face to face with our “income earning” pursuits, I am faced again with Adobe and its suite of software that is a source of Terror, stress and a lack of productivity in our lives. I would attempt to list the stressful situation we face by using Adobe’s suit of products. I do it without any profanity, childish name callings or language of ranting.
(1) Program launch Time: On average we use Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Premier and After Effects. On average each program takes a full 2 minutes to launch and ready to use, Adobe programs has this habit of pretending to be ready but is not quite ready, just try clicking on say the “File” menu. The biggest offender here is Photoshop with Illustrator a close second. Indesign is no better and constantly reverts to its default settings even with our custom settings saved. This is quite annoying as we cater to an international clientele with different measurement settings, imagine the time wasted with a client in Europe using the metric system and an American with the imperial standards.
(2) Program False Exit: At least three time a week we are surprise to see an adobe program “Illustrator is the biggest offender” running when it was closed three days ago, we usually has to force quit the offending application.
(3) Destroying the session: When an adobe program misbehaves and they often do, it brings the entire system down. An example being Dreamweaver and any browser use for previewing. When Dreamweaver slows to a crawl, so does the browser, and any other program you may be running even notepad that draws little system resources. It seems that no matter what’s done after including closing the programs, the session is dead resulting in a complete and time consuming system restart.
(4) Fonts: As desktop publishers we know better than to copy all of our thousands of fonts to the fonts directory. We use Extensis suitcase to load the font sets kept on an external USB 3 drive, yet every time we launch Photoshop the “Initializing fonts” popup comes up and lingers for up to 5 minutes before anything can be done. Sure we have big sets of fonts loading into suitcase but no more than 150 fonts that we know are clean, most being from Adobe’s own fonts library.
(5) Sluggishness: Sure this could be blamed on a myriad of things but we’ve seen this sluggish slow behavior primarily with Adobe’s programs, Photoshop sometimes just comes to a halt with the simplest of task like opening a 4mb jpeg. We just can’t put our fingers on it. With 8Gigs of ram with frequently defrag and system maintenance, we just don’t understand why Photoshop would just freeze for 5 minutes as we watch the status bar slowly progresses. It seems as though it’s a big “no, no” to have Dreamweaver and Photoshop running, not to mention Adobe bridge, now that’s another story. Multi-tasking with adobe products seems to be a pipe dream.
Adobe’s programs are a major source of stress in our Multimedia business, I’ve heard the mildest and calmest of people use profanity dozens of times a day as they try to earn a living using Adobe’s programs. Smoke and coffee breaks are a usual sign that an Adobe program is creeping, freezing or has caused the system to be restarted. Adobe must take the time to realize that some of us are real users, earning our living using their products and not some recreational user who downloaded a cracked copy to experiment. We’ve tried everything, from more memory to no web connection and even a system with just the adobe suite of program installed, yet the programs are still problematic to use. Seems everyone is reading from the same outdated diagnostic book with the same old questions like “What anti-virus program are you using” I can’t tell you how annoying it is that after waiting two days for an answer, the question is answered by another question. We wish we could dump adobe’s suit but their monopoly is in full effect, there just isn’t another Photoshop or Dreamweaver out there. The final cut guys on the Mac are frequently laughing at the premier guys on windows 7 and 8. All in all Adobe’s products have great features but there is something wrong with their products, something very, very wrong. On an average week, we loose five and a half hours of non-productivity due to Adobe’s programs, that’s 27 hours a month, 324 hours a year or 13 days a year, now that’s real money in any lauguage..Joe Bodego wrote:

Yeah, ya know, is there a real good reason why you ever close these apps? I meant, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign and Illustrator are always running...(I don't do web or video). So, it takes some time to relaunch some apps, is that really a hill worth dying on? I meant, is this really your top pain point? Really?

If you are getting regular and constistant hangs and crashes, something is wrong with your systems...for the same reason I don't have to restart apps very often, I couldn't tollerate consistant and regular hangs/crashes...I would do something to to troubleshoot and fix the systems because hanging and crashing is not typical and shouldn't be toloerated (and not automatically blamed on Adobe).

Uh...really? "Terror, stress and lack of productivity" in your lives? Ya think this might be just a bit over the top? I meant we ain't talking world peace or solving hunger here...if your pro apps are not working well for you, you need to get to the bottom of the reasons they aren't. Adobe apps work well for the vast majority of users–you just need to move from the "don't work for us" camp to the "works fine for us" camp. That's your job...fix yourself! -

Needed to reinstall all software
Over the past month I have had repeated problems with my 18/12 old BB Curve. Lots of exception errors and "white screen of death". Reinstalling operating system worked for 1-2 weeks but then problem restarted. I hope this sorts problem out. Be good to hear if it has for other users.If a program crashes on startup - specifically when it is
trying to initialize fonts - then in
almost all cases it is a corrupt font. Remove all non-system
fonts and try to launch flash again.
If it starts up then you will need to reinstall each font,
start up flash to see if it is the one in
suspect.

This has been mentioned on a couple of other forums so

I am on a PC using XP. I downloaded a trial version of Flash
8. It worked the first couple of times but now refuses to load at
all. Occasionally it gets as far as the little start page, says
copying files then initializing fonts then it disappears and that's
it. I read somewhere that you need to disable the start page

I just downloaded Flash 8 and when I try to run it shows the
loading screen, gets to Initializing Fonts, and then there is a
windows error saying:
"Flash 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."
In the Data Report:

I don't know what to do, someone help me. =/I had the same problem and found that Quick Time was the
culprit. Uninstalled QT and Flash loaded right up. I completely
uninstalled all QT applications, went to www.apple.com/quicktime
and downloaded and installed the latest version (7.x at this time).
Once installed I re-launched Flash 8 and it loaded fine. Probably
could have just unistalled/reinstalled and it would have worked
fine, but thought I might as well upgrade while I was at it. -
Illustrator CS6 Crashing on startup
I'm running the latest version of Mavericks on a MacBook Pro.
I've had no issues in the past but Illustrator is crashing upon startup.
Here's the crash report where thread 0 is reported as crashing. I thought it was a font issue b/c when it was initializing fonts, it would crash. I have removed ALL fonts that weren't validated and removed all duplicates but still no avail.

And if you did a migration of the applications then you will need to uninstall, run the cleaner tool and reinstall. Adobe apps on a Mac don't do well with migration.

Setting minimum point size, while also setting type size to zero?
I am creating forms in Acrobat X with editable fields from InDesign (CS6). I know I can set the type to zero to fit more type than the field allows for. Two questions... 1) Where do I set the type to zero? (Buttons and Forms in InDesign or after the PDF is created in Acrobat?) 2) How do I set a maximum type size so that the type will start at 9 pt and shrink from there?
Thanks again!!For text fields that are not set to be multiline, the initial font size is dependent on the height of the field when the font size is set to Auto. That's about the most control you have. For multiline text fields, it seems to default to a font size of 12 as long as the field is tall enough for that.
There are some things you can do via JavaScript so that a field starts out with a fixed font size and when the field is full, switches to a size of Auto, but it isn't as seamless as you may want. Post again if you'd like to pursue this approach. -
Macromedia Flash Professional 8 won't Open

A few weeks ago I had no problems using Macromedia Flash
Professional 8. However, recently I moved and when I got to my new
place, Flash Professional 8 would not open. When I try to open it,
the splash screen appears and when the loading messages get to
"Initializing Fonts", the standard Windows crash window appears.
The one that says "Flash 8 has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft
about this problem ..."
I thought that maybe I have some corrupt fonts, but all of
the fonts seem to be okay. Maybe I'm not testing them correctly.
Also, for some reason, iTunes no longer works either.
I have tried reinstalling both programs and the error box
still appears. Honestly, I have no idea what to do for here. Any
suggestions, at all, are greatly appreciated!

Flash CS3 crash at start up on Win XP SP2
i have terrible problem. Got my CS3 design premium few months
ago. I have started with no activation and used all the software
with no harm - also flash. I needed to reinstall the system anyway
(for other reasons). After system reinstallation Flash suddenly
stopped to start up. it crashes when the red welcome red screen is
beeing shown on 'initializing fonts' stage or right after it ...
then for a very short glimpse the main frame appears and all
dissapear leaving no errors in Win logs. I have been searched thru
internet to try find a solution. i have found those such as
uninstallling QuickTime and Flash Vid Encoder, checked the corrupt
fonts... i was installing and uninstalling the suite endlesslly...
nothing helped. of course i had my work deadline, so finally I
decided desperately to reinstall the system again and install all
the Suite software to clean system. So did I.
Suite has been installed, tried Flash and what made me very
happy, flash has started up with no harm... my happiness lasted
very short untill windows has downloaded and installed its updates.
After downloading Flash started to behave as before (crashing at
start up).
Adobe support seems not support anyone... i have called them
thousand times and they only could give me silly advices as install
and reinstall suite again. If anyone has the idea what is the
reason and knows the fix, I beg for help.. i will be very thankful
as my work is totally blocked now.If a program crashes on startup - specifically when it is
trying to initialize fonts - then in
almost all cases it is a corrupt font. Remove all non-system
fonts and try to launch flash again.
If it starts up then you will need to reinstall each font,
start up flash to see if it is the one in
suspect.

Flash CS6 crashes while loading
Hi everyone,
I have problem with loading fresh installed Flash CS6.
Yesterday I reinstalled system (win7, 64bit), and start downloading and installing Adobe programs. Everything worked fine, Flash started, I made few banners, and gone to sleep.
Today, when I started computer, I got notification that there are some updates, also for Flash.
After installing that I can't start Flash. I'm clicking on icon, I see welcome screen, and while 'Initializing fonts' everything just dissapear. No error, no alert, nothing.
Any idea?
