Initializing hard disk controller on kt3 ultra 2

I have a kt3 ultra 2 and when I open my pc, the start blocks on initializing hard drive controller (on the D-Bracket) but my harddisk is well plug. Someone have an idea ?

Hi,
I suggest disassemble the whole PC, use plastic standoffs for the motherboard, and put all back together;
Another is to use 6 screws + paper washer to hold the motherboard on the casing.
This should fix the problem.

I put the machine together and it does not display anything.   On the D Bracket it shows 2 red 2 green "Initializing Hard Drive Controller".  I have depopulated motherboard all the way down to just one stick of Ram, One hard drive the bare necessities.  It still doesnt work.  Swapped hard drives, video cards and Ram.  Measured voltages for power supply.  Rebuilt it twice from ground up.  Reset CMOS. Still same thing.  It shows the 2 red 2 green as soon as I turn it on, doesnt seem to be running any POST tests.
    Any suggestions? :O

I am a 17 year old high school student who has put together a total of 12 machines.  There are a couple of issues I would like to address:
    1.  Every PC I built was based around SOCKETA platform and EVERY board was an MSI.
    2.  I just finished building two machines around the KT3 Ultra-2 board (I am typing on now), have given the one to my uncle and aunt.  NO PROBLEMS.  XP2100 512 PC2700 Two 30Gb Maxtors RAID0 Saphire Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb DDR....   No trouble.  They went together in about 45 minutes...  I have hauled mine (I kept one for me - yippee!!)  up to my cabin and back again...  never ever failing...
    3.  I understand everyone's frustration in this issue, for it is DEFINETELY an issue, BUT, MSI I can guarantee is working out the solution and they stand behind their products.  I was having trouble with an Nforce based board.  Sent it back, got a new one in 4 days...  That has been my only trouble MY ONLY TROUBLE.  And on top of it, I later learn that it was my fault.  I was the one who grounded mysterious pin 9 on the USB header...  It was how the case came set up---you know with the front USB ports...
    4.  I also know that MSI's boards are the most stable I've seen .  I've helped other students with home built PC's who use Gigabyte, ASUS, Abit, ECS...  and I've seen trouble with all of them.
    5.  Stick with it.  Don't give up.  Get your board and if need be your proc. replaced, and move on.  This board is worth it.  It is so nice.  I have had my machine on for two weeks straight.  Running XP PRO.  Nothing but solid.
    6.  WHY DOES EVERYONE BLAME EVERYTHING ON THE PSU???  I have used cheap-o 300W generic supplies (granted, I have never owned or set-up a GF4) but plain and simply put, I have not had any stable problems with MSI boards and cheap power supplies.  MSI does an excellent job with their power stabilization portion of the board, and design their boards around imperfect voltages.  Nothing is perfect.  "30 amps", that's rediculous.
Anyway, I hope that I have changed a few minds about MSI and their boards, and that you will take the time to get your problem resolved.  If you do, you will do just like me, and return to MSI for all of your computing mainboard needs.

  • D-Bracket2: Initializing Hard Drive Controller

Hey guys, maybe you can help me out here?!  My motherboard hangs up with D-Bracket 2 showing (1, 2 - red lights and rest green) Initializing Hard Drive Controller.  I use Wester Digital HDD and also tried other HDD.  However I tried running with just CPU, Video and Memory installed - but same message is displayed.  It seems to me that it's not about HDD but HDD Controller on motherboard itself.  My oppinion is that my motherboard is broken and I should contact MSI for warranty coverage.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge in advance!
    Motherboard: KT3 Ultra2 Series
               HDD: Western Digital 60GB
PSU: ThermalTake 420 W - Runs fine on other system with even more load
                CPU: AMD Athlon 2200+

Western Digital uses a jumperless setting when there is only one drive attached to a channel.
Also, insure the blue end of the cable is inserted into the board, and the black end is attached to the Master drive. The gray connector in the middle is for any slave drives.

  • Initializing Hard Drive Controller?

Yesterday, the CPU temp spiked up to 60 so I disconnected everything and cleaned fan, cooler, and took of all  old thermal grease and put new one. It's silver one. Anyway, I left like that for a night and this morning I tried to connect it but didn't work. I tried erasing all Bios and but nope. So I tired four led thing and it says 2 red top, 2 green bottom. The manual says
Initializing Hard Drive Controller:This will initalize IDE drive and controller. I touched nothing of harddrive or cd-rom, only the fan and cooler. Nothing shows up when I turn it on. Please help~

ok. I took off cpu and back on again, 2 red on top, 2 green on botton. Same. Took Ram off and on again, same thing. Could it be bios problem? It worked flawlessly until I did what I said .

  • 975X Power Up Edition Hangs on "Initializing Hard Drive Controller"

    Symptoms:
4 month old Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD drive would "hang" the system maybe 2-3x in the last month.
Upon reboot no boot device found. Power cable removed from PC, and plugged back in it would work fine.
I switched off my PC at 8am, come home at 5pm, switch on PC and no boot device found.
    Remove power cable, problem persists.
    Clear Cmos, problem persists.
Removed all other unnecessary hardware and tried different cables and ports, problem persists.
Reach conclusion SSD drive is dead.
Plug back in old Hard drive (Still fixed in bottom of PC, but not attached) and PC loads up fine.
Pc randomly restarts about 10x in the space of 24 hours, sometimes with the message no boot device found. (Power cable removal/plugging back in rectifies fault)
    Now, problem persists also.
Remove all unnecessary hardware, and try again. Problem persists.
    Clear CMOS.
Pc shows MSI splash screen, and hangs.
Removed even hard drive, same problem.
Checked D Bracket and I have RRGG which is "Initializing Hard Drive Controller" "This will initialize IDE drive and controller"
    MOBO: MSI 975X Platinum V2.1
    CPU: Core2Duo E6300 1.86Ghz
    GFX: MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC
    Memory: Corsair XMS2-6400 2048MB (X2)
    PSU: Corsair TX650
    HDD1: Corsair Force 3 120GB / HDD2: Seagate Barracuda 250GB
    HDD3: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
    HDD4: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Currently have GFX, 1 Stick of ram, the CPU and its cooler plugged in, that's it.
Any suggestions? I've searched this forum but there aren't any real solutions, one was dead and required RMA'ed, another one depended on the PSU, and another one didn't have enough power to the PCI-E card. (GFX)

Just to be sure on this: What you are saying is that currently, it does not matter what kind of device is attached (SSD, hard drive, optical drive), you get the ""Initializing Hard Drive Controller" "This will initialize IDE drive and controller"", even though if there are no SSDs, hard drives and optical drives connected to the system whatsoever?

  • Largest hard disk on MSI KT4A Ultra (MS-6590)

MSI say the largest hard disk the KT4A Ultra (MS-6590) supports is 160GB:

I want to fit a 250gb HDD to my system. Will it work?
Check your board's support page here. Look for the Test Report for Hard Disks. Once a board supports greater than 137gb, any size drive will work. If you see a size such as 160gb tested as OK, then you will be fine!

Sorry, I missed the first line about it not posting.      Sleepy, I guess.
Swapping parts like the video card between the two systems will eliminate that possibility since it could be power supply or cpu or video card that stops the boot process before it can initialize the hard drive controller.
Please furnish us more information about what parts are in the system?  Create a profile containing info similar to I have in mine.  The info will make troubleshooting much easier.
hi mate, thanks for the fast replies.
i had done all the sweaping of parts from one system to another. as for the power supply is a new one.
my system is using MSI KT3 Ultra 2 (MS-6380) running on CPU AMD 2100+
    Ram is Kingston PC2700 333Mhz 512MB.
    A Maxtor HDD 40Gig.
    A creative Sound Card.

  • KT3 ULTRA A DUD?

    MSI KT3 ULTRA
    A OPEN Case ATX-300GT Powersupply.
Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 60 Gig. Hd. ST360021A
    Kingston DDR ValueRam 512mb DIMM.
Athlon XP 1600+ Processor (works, tested it)
ATI Radeon All in Wonder 64. (probably works for sure)
Ok, here's the problem. I have everything checked twice, all cables, jumpers etc... I go to boot up and I do have a signal going to the monitor (it's not the card, I tried another working card in it) and it's a black screen. The motherboard does not beep or anything. The D-Bracket is coded:
    R R
    G G
    - Initializing Hard Drive Controller.
So it will just hang there. I don't know what the problem is. I have two CD rom drives that I originally had hooked up with the HD and I've tried every which way to hook it up and test it. I'm stumped. Any ideas?
    Thank you.
    Statik24

Ok, I tested it on a AOPEN 250w powersupply.
This 250w is less than the one in question, should it matter? I am originally using this 250w with my K7T266 Pro2 and Athlon 1500 XP. It works fine with that.
Im wondering if the KT3 requires more power or if it for some reason just doesn't work with all the power supplys that other similar boards will work with.
Anyway, I've got different results now...
What it does now is actually beeps. 3 long beeps in a row, the D-Link code is:
    R G
    R R
    -Memory Detection Test.
The manual says it will hang there if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly. It hangs there and the memory module (Kingston Value Ram PC2100 DDR 512mb) is installed correctly.
I then tryed booting with the module in slots #2 and #3. Same thing. I then tried a memory chip that I knew worked for sure (in slot 1,2,3)  and it still hangs at power on, with the same D-link message.
So it's not a bad RAM chip, and it is not because it's installed incorrectly. So now it's not giving me the IDE Init. Code anymore, now it's just giving me the Memory Detection Test Code.
When I switched the power supply back to the original (300w AOPEN) and it's doing the same Memory Dectect thing! It's not doing the IDE Init. anymore....
I'm kind of confused as how the D-Link codes changed from the first powersupply to the second, and then retained that diagnostic message... Maybe it is still that I have not given the board a powerful enough powersupply?
So next step in troubleshooting is to buy a 350w power supply and try it? If that doesn't work, I can't see anything else wrong with the configuration, so I would assume that the motherboard is bad. Then to exchange it.
So is this starting to sound like anything to you yet  ?(
    Thanks, Statik24

The manual says Initializing Hard Drive Controller-This will initialize IDE Drive and controller. Just what does this mean? Is the controller on the MB dead or is the HD dead? Clearing Cmos, changing the PSU, and changing the video card did nothing. Still no bootup screen and I have an amber light on the monitor. I can`t even get into the bios and a boot disk doesn`t work.

  • [SOLVED]Hard Disk not recognized when installing

Hey all, I'm just starting with Arch and I've had some trouble installing it on my Acer netbook.
My first installation went well except that I had forgot to download the wireless tools so I decided to do a fresh install as I had no access to a wired connection at the time.  The second installation attempt must have had some error on my part as Arch failed to start after selecting it from Grub, saying that the kernel was not available/not recognized.
Now my subsequent attempts at installing have failed because the hard disk is not recognized when running either cgdisk or cfdisk.  Instead of showing my hard drive partitions after running
    cfdisk /dev/sda
it shows my usb drive. If I instead use
    cgdisk /dev/sda
it displays an error saying that the disk is damaged or not recognized.  When I first saw this I thought my disk was failing, so I tried #! to see if it would show the same error, but it was able to recognize the entire disk and install correctly.  Now, even after having the entire disk formatted as ext4 with #! installed, cgdisk is still giving me the same error about a damaged disk.
Am I doing something incorrectly or is there a fix for this?  I haven't been able to find any information about this after a good while of searching.
    Thanks for your help.

srs5694 wrote:The cgdisk "damaged disk" error is probably a result of the tool seeing an MBR partition table on your USB flash drive, rather than the GPT disk it's expecting. If I'm right, you should not follow s1ln7m4s7r's advice, since that will simply trash your USB flash drive!
If you mean by trashing the USB flash drive, that it will delete all data and partitions on the selected drive it is correct, because:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/$disk bs=4096 count=1
    - this will delete all partition-table data
    sgdisk -o /dev/$disk
    - this will clear out all data. This includes GPT header data, all partition definitions, and the protective MBR.
    /dev/$disk
    - this will make you enter ncurses-based GUID partition table (GPT) manipulator, where you can create new partitions
You should only do this if you are certain of what disk it is.
Now if when you said this, you were meaning it will became broken, then it may be a special kind of usb drive because i've donne it many times and i've not broken any.
srs5694 wrote:My guess is that either your hard disk has become /dev/sdb (this can happen in some cases; disk identifiers aren't really fixed) or you're missing a driver for your hard disk controller because you've booted a different kernel or a different initrd file. Another possibility is that there's a hardware fault -- probably a loose cable -- that's preventing the kernel from seeing the disk.
If the usb drive is not where you installed arch, then you need to find if there are more recognized drives:
    lsblk | grep disk
And see the uuid of the root partition you want, and add it to your bootloader boot line:
    blkid /dev/sdxx

  • Replace Hard Disk ST336607LSUNG36G on Array Controller

    Hi,
There is a Sun Fire V65x server that runs Linux Red Hat Enterprise Edition 4.
This server has an Intel SRCZCR Array Controller.
The front panel has the disk light and warning light red. Also, one of the disks has a red/orange light instead of a green light.
The array controller advices there's one missing private hot fix drives missing, but the array also says SMART information is good for every hard disk.
I'd like to know how should I proceed to replace one of the disk.
From my point of view, and after reading the manuals, I have to shutdown the server, replace the hard disk, power up, enter the array configuration, choose I've done it always on Windows machines, but not on linux and Sun.
Repair Array Drives, and ask it to add the new hot fix drive. And that's all.
I understand there should not be do nothing at OS level, because is a Hardware array.
    Am I correct?
I've done it always on Windows machines, but not on linux and Sun.
    Thanks to everyone.
    Alex.

    Hi,
In your first post you state that the Hard Drive was failing, what led you to believe this?  Ubuntu seems to be easier on the HDD than Windows, so if there is a problem with the drive, it may just not be showing up yet.
Certainly, if there is a problem with the HDD, this would cause the failed recovery and buying a replacement set of Recovery Discs would be of no help.
Check the Hard Drive as follows.  Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

  • Hard disk problem after installing Solaris 10 u5 on a Sun Ultra 24

    Hi.
After receiving a new Sun Ultra 24, shipped with Solaris 10 u4, the first thing I did was installing Solaris 10 u5. X wouldn't start but that was not a big problem and installed it in text mode. Installation went fine but, when the system starts, a single beep is heard and after some seconds some warning message appear on the console, before the "Hostname: ..." message, informing that some read operation on my hard disk had timed out and were aborted. The system then starts up normally. The only other anomaly is that the diagnostic partition in unbootable.
I ran the hard disk tests from the tools and drivers CDs and all of the tests were passed. Solaris 10 u4 was working normally so I'm wondering if this may be a bug.
    Thanks for your help,
