InitSID.ora and spfile parameters

Hi friends,
I have recieved early watch report from SAP saying that database parameters are missing. They have sent me some parameters. But I am unable where to set these parameters. I have found some parameters in initSID.ora. But it says we could not directly edit in this file(initSID.ora). I came to know we should set in spfile. Can any one explain how to set parameters in spfile.
Waiting for your reply  friends......
Regards,
Nageshwar

Hi
If in the initSID.ora is a warning not to edit it directly, then you are prpbably using the SP (Server Parameter) file.
You should edit the database parameters with BRTOOLS.
Check 'Note 601157 - Oracle9i: Server Parameter File' for more information.
kind regards
Boudewijn

    I wonder if we still have initSID.ora and pfile.ora in oracle database 9i2? if we have, where are they? thanks

    If you are using the parameter file, you should find it in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs or $ORACLE_HOME/database folder depending on your operating system.

  • EBS R12 Database Copy or clone - init.ora, and spfile conflict...

    Hi All,
    I am a report developer. I have two servers(VMs)
    Server1: Win 2008, Oracle EBS R12.1.1. (db_name = vis)
    Server2: Win XP SP3, Oracle 11g R1 (db_name = orcl)
    My goal is to copy the whole EBS R12.1.1 Vision Instance database (VIS) on Server1 to Server 2 Oracle Database....And please note that I need only data in those schemas - I use that to run ETL scripts, so, on Server2 I am not going to run any EBS Applications(Forms, or reports or others).
    In order to do this I am http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle_tips_db_copy.htm method.
    During the process I have encountered an issue - Server1 (VIS) database uses initVIS.ora file as parameter file, where as Server 2 uses SPFILE.ORA as parameter file.
    in Step8 we have to copy the init.ora file from EBS R12 to Server2, but this doesn't help me as server2 use spfile.
    please give me your suggestions to solve this gap......

  • Modifying initSID.ora/spfile

    Hello,
    SAP system details - ECC 6.0. AIX+Oracle.
    While applying OSS note - 1227227, I came across the statement -
    Set the following event in the init<SID>.ora / spfile:
    event='10091 trace name context forever, level 1'
    I have a couple of queries -
    1. Do I need to set the event in initSID.ora or spfile or both
    2. Can I change spfile while the DB and SAP system are up and running?
    Thanks.

    Gautam,
    Just to add you should not change spfile manually.
    Below links may help you.

    1- change the UTL_FILE_DIR to have in front the same value like $APPLPTMP,
    ex: /usr/tmp
    you need to change it in initSID.ora and reboot the database after
    2- grant all user read/write permissions over that directory:
    chmod 777 /usr/tmp
    As I've win-XP there is no need to set permission.
    and now i'm Confused.
    What to do?

  • Oracle9i linux and spfile@.ora

    Hello,
    I have notice problem to startup database with dbstart script.
    plateforme linux Redhat 7.2.
    Chan i run dbstart, database start with a config file name spfile{SID}.ora (in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs) and not with the $ORACLE_BASE/admin/{SID}/pfile/init.ora config file.
    If i delete spfile{SID}.ora file, dbstart use the good config file. But i don't see any reference to this spfile in dbstart script.
    Could anyone explain me this bug?
    Thanks

    I'm guessing that you don't have a backup?
    If that is the case do you have another init file in the dbs directory? If so copy it to initT00TIV.ora and change the obvious lplaces where the instance name appears
    Create a minimal init.ora file to try and get the instance started:
    i.e. Here is an example
    control_files = (/u01/oracle/oradata/T00TIV/control01.ora,
    /u02/oracle/oradata/T00TIV/control02.ora,
    /u03/oracle/oradata/T00TIV/control03.ora)
    # OBVIOUSLY, I DON'T KNO WHERE YOUR CONTROL FILE ARE!
    undo_management = auto
    db_name = T00TIV
    db_block_size = 8192

    Why does the RMAN Backup struck at Controlfile , SPFile autobackup?

    Hello;
    I believe the issue is caused by your media management software. You should contact your media management vendor.
    Try the same operation to disk and I bet it works.

  • I can only backup the datafiles but not the control files and SPFiles

    Hello, all,
    I am using the Oracle 10g on a linux server which runs redhat 9. I want to backup the whole database to the disk, but not the flash recovery area. It is /rawdata. I will show how I configure the backup part in EM. Is there anything wrong?
    1. the ARCHIVELOG is on
    2. under Administration, in the All Initialization Parameters, I remove the string value of “log_archive_dest_1”. After that, I go to the SPFile and remove the string value of “log_archive_dest_1”
    3. configure backup settings and policies. The Disk Backup Location field is set to /rawdata. Select Image Copy for Disk Backup type. Test Disk backup is successful.
    4. go to Policy page. Select “Automatically backup the control file and server parameter file (SPFile) with every backup and database structural change.) input /rawdata into the filed: Autobackup Disk Location
    Select “Optimize the whole database backup by skipping unchanged files such as read-only and offline datafiles that have been backed up”
    Select “Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery to any time whin the specified number of days (point-in-time recovery)
    Accept the default of 31days
    5. go to Schedul Backup
    6. select customized from the backup Strategy drop-down menu. Select the Whole Database
    7. in the Options page, select “Full backup” in the Backup Type section. Select “Online Backup” in the Backup Mode section. Select “back up all archived logs on disk” in the Advanced section.
    8. in the Setting page, select “Disk”
    9. in the Schedule page, accept the default job name and description. Select Immediately to execute the job immediately.
    10. just submit the job.
    After several minutes, the job is failed while the Prebackup and Postbackup are succeeded. The log says:

    Can someone please help ..

    hi
    connect as sys user and then try...
    first make folder as backup and then copy the old SPFILEorcl to the same folder(backup)
    now you can easily modify the files otherwise you will get error..
    you will find here..
    C:\ORACLE_HOME\database
    SQL>  alter system set sga_max_size=2000M scope=spfile ;
    System altered.OR.
    connect as sys user.
    and do the following...
    1).SQL>create pfile from spfile;
    2).modify the pfile and decrease\increase the size of pools.
    3).shutdown database.
    4). Startup database using created pfile.
    if it start ok then.
    5.) Recreate the Spfile with the created Pfile.
    SQL>create spfile from pfile;sarah

  • Oracle 10g R2 for Windows ignores init.ora and registry values

    Hello,
    I have a strange issue. I try to set some parameters for Oracle but it doesn't seem to work.
    Here the story:
    I created the DB with the DBCA under windows and set my init parameter at frist creation with 3 important values:
    OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX = ""
    REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT=TRUE
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
    this values are in the Registry and the init.ora and the init.ora.7192011143454 in ORAHOME_DB/scripts and pfile
    I've now changed these parameters in the init.ora and registry to:
    OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX = ""
    REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT=FALSE
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
    and restarted the whole system - after the restart I checked the value for REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT:
    show parameter remote_os_authent
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    remote_os_authent boolean TRUE
    It keeps true. But why it keeps true why I can't change this value anymore after the DBCA?
    Do I miss something?
    Thanks

    show parameter spfile;
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\SPFILEMACSCURR.ORA
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    I have created a new spfile from my init.ora with:
    create spfile='C:\oracle\product..toMyInstanceDbs\ioglnx.ora' from pfile='C:\pathToPfile\DBHOME\scripts\init.ora'
    So the problems as it seem to me to instrcut oracle to use my new spfile...in Windows.

  • TO_NUMBER and NLS parameters......don't understand

    I am trying to get my head around the use of format elements and NLS parameters with TO_NUMBER and TBH am at my wits end. So I'm going to start with something simple. I've never bothered or had to bother with the third parameter 'nls params' for NLS settings and now that I have I really regret it.
    This works even though the '.' and ',' characters are not in their normal positions....
    SQL> SELECT TO_NUMBER(  '17.000,23', '999G999D99', 'nls_numeric_characters='',.'' ') FROM DUAL;
    TO_NUMBER('17.000,23','999G999D99','NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS='',.''')
                                                               17000.2
    So why is this version throwing up an error?   (I should say all I've changed is the order of ',' and '.' in the string)
    SQL> SELECT TO_NUMBER(  '17,000.23', '999G999D99', 'nls_numeric_characters='',.'' ') FROM DUAL;
    SELECT TO_NUMBER(  '17,000.23', '999G999D99', 'nls_numeric_characters='',.'' ') FROM DUAL
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01722: invalid number
    Also does the order of characters matter here  'nls_numeric_characters='',.'' ')  ?
    I apologise but when marking code in my spl*plus CLI and trying to paste here as 'SQL insert' lines ended up missing or wrapping or line spacing changing seconds later. I ended up with one line written over the other and the missing lines only being visible when highlighted!!!

    Also does the order of characters matter here  'nls_numeric_characters='',.'' ')  ?
    Of course the order is important. How would you tell the meaning of each character if it wasn't?
    First character is the decimal separator, and the second is the thousand separator.
    Your first query is OK because the decimal separator used in the input string is '.' and the thousand separator is ',', which matches exactly the characters specified in the NLS parameter.
    The second query failed for the opposite reason.

  • Control file and spfile auto backup backup is failing

    Hello All,
    I am using Oracle RAC 11gR2 with ASM. My database is 2 nodes RAC1 and RAC2.
    I am taking RMAN database backups to ASM diskgroup (FRA) and to a Network File System mounted on both RAC1 and RAC2. I have this requirement to take backup also outside ASM.
    I have set: CONFIGURE CONTROL FILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    I am runing the RMAN backup job from node 2 (RAC2)
    I am facing the below error when taking a backup to the Network File system;

  • What should have in equal tnsnames,ora and listener.ora?

    Hi forum members again I'm very new in oracle, and I'm trying to create a sucessfull net service name, using oracle net configuration assitant, but when I try to test it I got this error, .***"""ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor."""*** And I have read that tnsnames.ora and listener.ora should have some parameters in common, but exactly I don't know, Do you know what parameters should be? or The ORA-12514 problem , doesn't have relation with the tnsnames.ora and listener files?, If doesn't wich is the reason of this message?
    By the way I put what contain these files:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------listener.ora
    # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /opt/oracle/product/10.1.0.3/network/admin/listener.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = oracle.gentoo)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /opt/oracle/product/10.1.0.3)
    (SID_NAME = oracle)
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    SAVE_CONFIG_ON_STOP_LISTENER = TRUE
    TRACE_LEVEL_LISTENER = USER
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////tnsnames.ora
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: /opt/oracle/product/10.1.0.3/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    NORACLE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = tux)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = noracle)
    By the way what must be the username and the pasword that ask the ORACLE CONFIGURATION ASSINTANT to test the net service name? Must be the user name and password of the system user?
    Thanks in advance

    OK, here we go ... extra long as I intend to bookmark this and make reference, as this is a very common question ... skip to the bottom if you want my guess to the solution.
    Oracle Net Services (formerly SQL*Net, Net8, Oracle Networking) has two parts - the client and the server side. I'll discuss the server first, then the client.
    1) Server, and specifically Listener:
    The Oracle Listener is a monitor that listens for Oracle service requests on one or more ports. Usually this is on TCP/IP port 1521. When it gets an Oracle request from any network client, it checks whether it's in the list of Oracle Services for which it is monitoring. If found, it will contact that service, request a connection for the client, tell the service and client where and how to connect, and get itself out of the loop.
    Notes:
    a) It can listen on behalf of any number of services;
    b) A service can be a database instance, an EPG service (the DBMS_EPG is the replacement for Apache in the database in 10gR2), an external job, etc;
    c) One listener can listen on behalf of multiple database instances;
    d) The services can be listed in the LISTENER.ORA or they can self-register;
    e) If databases self-register, they use the initialization parameter LOCAL_LISTENER
    f) If self-registering, the listener should be up before the database
    g) Shutting down the listener will stop future connections, but has no impact on existing ones.
    One frequent point of confusion - a connection request on the local machine may loop out to the network and contact the listener, or it may bypass the listener entirely and use a bequeath adapter. The 'beq' connection is the 'normal' connection by "sqlplus / as sysdba" or "sqlplus system/manager" on the local machine (note that no @instance was used ... in *nix, that is derived from the $ORACLE_SID environment variable)
    In your listener.ora, you specify global_dbname=oracle.gentoo and sid_name=oracle. I assume therefore you can find an initoracle.ora or spfileoracle.ora somewhere on your system.
    2) Client:
    A client that wants to connect to an Oracle service uses the client side of the Oracle Net Services. The definition of client includes: any Oracle client utiltiy (SQLPlus, SQLLoad, Forms, Reports, etc.); an Oracle database instance that wants to make a external procedure call or a dblink; third party tools such as ODBC and JDBC.
    In SQL*Net version 1 the connection was made by specifying the target in the connect string ("user/password@host:listener_port:sid") and that is also used these days by many JDBC drivers, especially the Oracle Thin JDBC driver. Oracle's Easy connection mechanism uses a similar variant.
    Since SQL*Net Version 2, Oracle has supported the concept of alias translation. Basically it's very similar in concept to DNS - give it the name of the service and tell it where to find the translation table. The translation tables include TNSNAMES.ORA, ONAMES servers (deprecated in 10g), LDAP usng Oracle's OiD. The choice of translation table, and alternate order if the lookup fails in one, is stored in the SQLNET.ORA (if one exists).
    Assuming TNSNAMES.ORA, the chain of events is:
    - get the alias to look up (in your case NORACLE);
    - if the SQLNET.ORA has a DEFAULT_DOMAIN setting, (often =WORLD) append a dot and that value to the alias;
    - go to the TNANSMES.ORA file pointed by the TNS_ADMIN variable (environment or registry), or (if not set) the one in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory;
    - look up the first occurance of the alias;
    - if found, use the protocol specified to request a connection to the host, usin DNS to unravel the host to an IP address if necessary (in your case TCP/IP, to TUX) ;
    - if host connection if made, connect to the listener that is configured for that port (in your case 1521);
    - if listener is there, ask it for connection to the service (in your case, you are asking for instance 'noracle');
    i if the listener knowwss about the service, it will hand off the request.
    Your problem appears to be asking for instance 'noracle' in the tnsnames but listeneing for 'oracle' at the listener. Of course, I can not see any auto-registered instances which you would get from "lsnrctl status" on the server.

  • Tnsnames.ora and listener.ora

    I am studying oracle and came accross
    tnsnames.ora and listener.ora file.
    Can any one tell me in simplified terms about these 2 files. what are they and what exactly they do?

    When you are accessing Oracle over network you need a listerner service (usually on server box) and SQLNet or Net8 client on client machine. Listener.ora specifies the parameters for listener process and tnsnames.ora contains the SQLNet or Net8 connection informations about database server(s)

  • ENVS and GLOBAL_USERNAME parameters to SID_DESC

    DB:9i
    Hello All,
    Can we add ENVS and GLOBAL_USERNAME parameters to SID_DESC section of listener.ora
    Could anyone me the list of parameters,
    we can add to the SID_DESC section of listener.ora
    DN

    No, I mean GLOBAL_USERNAMEDid you read above link ? GLOBAL_USERNAME does not exist, while there is GLOBAL_DBNAME.
    what about ENVS?Please read the link : Use the parameter ENVS to specify environment variables for the listener to set prior to executing (as a child process) a dedicated server program or an executable specified with the PROGRAM parameter.
    I used it sometimes for external procedures.
